Alaska Lawmakers Ask Fed to Take Over Central Park to Point Out Hypocrisy

Alaska Lawmakers Ask Fed to Take Over Central Park to Point Out Hypocrisy

Perturbed with outsiders interfering with the right to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Republican Congressman Kyle Johansen introduced a resolution in Juneau Monday that gives those on the east coast a taste of their own medicine.

Thus, in the interest of preserving one of the few remaining glimmers of urban greenery left, Alaska state legislators are asking the federal government to take over Central Park.

Yes. The Central Park in New York City.

The New York Times reports:

It urges the feds to “declare Central Park to be a wilderness area and to prohibit any further improvement or development of Central Park unless authorized by an act of Congress.”

Many of Mr. Johansen’s colleagues immediately signed on as co-sponsors, including the speaker of the house.

The resolution, first noted on this coast by West Side Rag, is primarily a piece of political satire, Mr. Johansen said Wednesday, but one with a solid basis in history.

“What I’m trying to accomplish,” Johansen said, “is to basically make a point of the hypocrisy of — and don’t take offense — those East Coast folks who write a lot of checks to shut down Alaska, while in their own backyard, Manhattan has been turned from a pristine wild island supporting an amazing Muir web of life to having only Central Park left as a green belt. And even Central Park has been radically changed.”

The Times adds:

Central Park makes up 6 percent of Manhattan; the area that pro-drilling lawmakers seek to open to oil exploration makes up 8 percent of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Ergo, if one landscape is worthy of federal protection, why not the other?

Though extractive industries are not allowed to operate in Central Park (unless you count the overpriced organic hot-dog vendor near the skating rink), the landscape has indeed been repeatedly disfigured over the years by zoos and faux Gothic castles and whatnot.

But Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe said that “the premise that Central Park is not as protected as a federal property in Alaska is not true.” Among other things, the park falls under the Public Trust Doctrine, which bars use of parks for any non-recreation purpose without approval from the state legislature.

According to the Times, the resolution explains that before Henry Hudson arrived in 1609, Manhattan was “a remarkably diverse and natural landscape of hills, valleys, forests, fields,” as well as marshes, beaches and streams that sustained populations of elk, gray wolf, black bear and mountain lion.

Since that time, the measure continues, “the unrestrained development of buildings, highways and urban sprawl on Manhattan has destroyed habitat, displaced indigenous peoples and disrupted” ecosystems.

    A Rant:

I am so sick and tired of the cities dictating to people in the rural areas how to live or worse sending their problems ( garbage, runoff, sewage, politics) out to us. They have paved over the land, cut down all but one or two trees and then somehow they are all “experts” in land management and conservation.

We had a neighbor who moved out from the city to the country by us. At first she went on and on about the beautiful deer (then they ate her heritage roses). She lasted less than a year. The mountain lion citing in another neighbor’s property was just too much for her I guess.

Mercy me! Those beautiful fuzzy cats you see in the zoo look a whole lot different when they may see you first (and the last thing you see is a set of incisors)! Carrying one of those “nasty” guns with you on the property at all times, starts to make sense.

When you go to the grocery store and pick up a steak for dinner, or an “organically” grown head of lettuce do you know how it got there? It involves blood, animal poop (from those “poor captive” animals) and a whole lot of dirt under the fingernails (and you don’t smell too good at the end of the day either). But we are just clinging to our bibles and our religion here in “Fly-over-country”, “doing the work Americans won’t do” all so they can avoid the reality of the food chain they say they so desperately want to protect.

Maybe some outsiders should “occupy ” Central Park for a few nights. Could have a nice little Tea Party and clean up after ourselves. I understand you don’t really need a permit, could just have a big overnight picnic. I hear the weather is nice in September.

Funny, I spent every summer on my grandmother‘s farm learning what you’ve described and so much more. All I’ve ever wanted to be when I grew up was a farmer. Blood and all. Instead, I’m stuck in suburbia, the bane of humanity. City folk have no understanding of the true nature of life and can’t imagine the smarts and respect it takes to live in the country. I’m talking about the real country, where you are at least an hour from the hospital/police department. Where a trip to town is a huge excursion.

Speaking of Alaska…Sarah Palin’s FaceBook: But this whole thing isn’t really about Newt Gingrich vs. Mitt Romney. It is about the GOP establishment vs. the Tea Party grassroots and independent Americans who are sick of the politics of personal destruction used now by both parties’ operatives with a complicit media egging it on. In fact, the establishment has been just as dismissive of Ron Paul and Rick Santorum. Newt is an imperfect vessel for Tea Party support, but in South Carolina the Tea Party chose to get behind him instead of the old guard’s choice. In response, the GOP establishment voices denounced South Carolinian voters with the same vitriol we usually see from the left when they spew hatred at everyday Americans “bitterly clinging” to their faith and their Second Amendment rights. The Tea Party was once again told to sit down and shut up and listen to the “wisdom” of their betters. We were reminded of the litany of Tea Party endorsed candidates in 2010 who didn’t win. Well, here’s a little newsflash to the establishment: without the Tea Party there would have been no historic 2010 victory at all… http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10150516734848435

Yea, it’s Agenda 21. Move all the people into “urban centers” and turn the rural areas back to wildlife habitats. Where would the farms be? On the edge of the urban centers, and government controlled. I‘m glad they’re trying to make this point. The regulations have gotten to the point that in “federal reserves” you practically can’t do anything, even as a citizen. I agree. Give them a taste of their own medicine. Can you imagine what chaos it would cause if they did that to Central Park? Unfortunately, the satire will be lost on the left, they just won’t see the connection.

Does anyone remember hearing reports of a mountain lion roaming Washington D.C. and being sighted in Maryland? Rumor has it that back about 1995; some Westerners became fed up with proclamations from Washington after a woman was eaten by a “protected” mountain lion. The orphaned cubs got more funding and attention than the children of the woman that was killed.
Over time, they captured several Mountain Lions, loaded them into trucks, drove them to areas of Maryland near Washington D.C. and released them. Perhaps the East Coasters needed a taste of their idyllic utopian world. The animals generated a panic and several “official” reports of “false” sightings. Naaaa, those people were “delusional”, no such thing. Perhaps they found this more worrisome than the “pretty deer” eating their prized Azaleas. “Anybody see my pet Foo-Foo?” The animals are still being sighted, even though they had supposedly been “eradicated” in the 1800s.

New Yorkers know. (The city, not the state) They know everything. They even know things they don’t know. And, they make judgments – because they know.

One of the things New Yorkers know is New Yorkers. They make laws that contend with what New Yorkers are. Those laws a different than laws in other areas because New Yorkers are different.

An example of laws to control New Yorkers, is their gun laws. New Yorkers know that New Yorkers are not capable of making their own decisions, or acting in a responsible way to defend themselves. New Yorkers know that New Yorkers can’t make adult decisions, so they have the city make the decisions for them. New York is a city with a crime rate higher than any state, but since New Yorkers do not trust New Yorkers’ intelligence, they ban New Yorkers from carrying the means of self defense.

No, you are not alone. There are those of us around that love our land, respect it for the life blood that it is and know what it is to put in a hard day’s work; To go to bed happy with dirt under our nails, blisters on our hands and usually a bruise or two. We don’t mind and wouldn’t trade it for the world!

We don’t run to the doctor for a pill for our arthritic hands or when the kids are running a low temp for a day. We know by the smell of the air when it is going to rain or just stay overcast. We don’t care if we have the new BMW, give me a new tricked out Massey Ferguson instead! We don’t need $100 designer jeans, when the $20 jeans get the job done better. We teach our kids that the world does not revolve around the winner of American idol, but whether the rains come on time. We teach them that education does not begin and end at the schoolhouse door or with a piece of paper; that life is a temporary situation and we only have so long to make it something worthy of defending before God. And yet somehow we are the stupid people, rednecks, hicks, the gullibles take your pick…..

      No, you are not alone!

Maybe even help cut down the obesity levels. Can you imagine the carnage that would follow? @AXELPHANTOM: If the Feds did take over Central Park, the wildlife folks could do what they did here, repopulate the area with animals that were indigenous before they were were bumped off because they are dangerous to mankind or are nuisance animals. We just got an infusion of gray wolves and cayotes.

Just think, they could reintroduce copper heads, wolves, cayotes, lions, bobcats ,deer, and heaven knows what else. They could also stop all of that silly lawn mowing and remove all of the pavement to turn it back into pristine wilderness. Now, that would make all of those big city liberals really happy, Of course they would need a gun or two to take a walk in the park, but that should make them happy.

It must be pointed out that the NIMBYites drive gas hogging cars, fill-up coal burning cars & fly carbon producing jets.

Oil literal seeps out of the ground in California, which is how they found it around or just south of Santa Barbara in the 1st place. “The Beverly Hill Billies” story is wrong in one respect. It wasn’t just Appalachia where oil seeped out of the ground naturally. It happens all over (New York for example).
It still happens underneath the waves off the coast of California.

I’m not quite sure this goes far enough. I am sure the squirrels and birds are disturbed by the constant presence of humans. The damage to the flora should be controlled as well. Perhaps a limit to the number of people allowed in the park should be looked at. I am also sure the mechanical noise from the surrounding streets, as well as the cross traffic thru the park should be controls. A complete ban for all motorize vehicles should do it. While we are at it perhaps we should look at a ban on the use of the air space above the park as well.

And then we’ll start a “Restore the Ecosystem” project. We’ll start by slowly but surely tearing down all of the buildings, sidewalks and streets that directly touch Central Park. We’ll replant trees, reintroduce wild life, etc. We‘ll continue expanding the territory further and further until finally all of man’s horrible marks on nature are erased.

We can even put to good use all of those “Turtle Tunnels” earmarked in the stimulus bill.

I don’t know why states keep complying with the take-over of their own land by the Feds and their Eco-Na zi EPA, just drill. Give Obama the finger and drill, what can he do, send troops? Well states have their own National Guard and since the regulations always happen in Red States you can count on thousands of well armed conservative citizens to show up as a civilian militia as well.

The fed’s weapon of choice is to cut federal funding for infrastructure, education, and public services. They can also use federal law enforcement agencies to arrest people for trespassing on federal lands, and state officials could be held liable as accessories–although it has never escalated to that level before…

Ask Newt how 114 million acres got designated conservation areas in Alaska, I am certain he knows very well. Since he voted with the Carter Administration to make a Federal Land grab from the state of Alaska. Why do you think we have those HARP projects going on there ? I love how the feds can establish super powered antenna’s capable of charging the ionosphere, but no drilling. What a crock. Wonder if Newt would be ok with drilling on the Moon ?? The greatest part of the irony is the fact Palin endorses him, with his wife coming darn close. Yep, Drill baby drill…. You would have thought Palins would have known Newt was a land grabbing, Sovereignty destroying, constitution denying, progressive… but nope. Better not spank your children in front of Newt either, might rile him up, have him calling for you to have your 2nd amendment rights taken away from you. That’s right Newt, bash Romney while you undermine out 2nd amendment rights. You and Obama and your global ideas can suck it !! haha.. JUst found the boat load of links for NEWTY BOY – Gingrich Backs Abortion Funds, He defended Romneycare,Gingrich says NAFTA worked because it created jobs in Mexico ,http://www.newtexposed.com/

States have the power to thumb their noses at the federal govt through County Sheriffs. Read up on the powers of your County Sheriff. They can arrest the Feds. Read up and encourage your County Sheriff.

Thank you Oklahoma, I’ve been saying this for a while. The feds may try to cut off federal funding but I bet you a dollar to a doughnut if Alaska defied the feds & drilled anyway, there would be so much support from the rest of the country (outside of the west & northeast) they wouldn’t need federal funding.
