All 14 Wisc. Senate Dems Join Pro-Labor Protesters in March Around Capitol

MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Clogging the Wisconsin Capitol grounds and screaming angry chants, tens of thousands of undaunted pro-labor protesters descended on Madison again Saturday and vowed to focus on future elections now that contentious cuts to public worker union rights have become law.

Protests have rocked the Capitol almost every day since Gov. Scott Walker proposed taking nearly all collective bargaining rights away from public workers, but the largest came a day after the governor signed the measure into law. Madison Police estimated the crowd at 85,000 to 100,000 people—along with 50 tractors and one donkey—by late afternoon. No one was arrested.

Speakers delivered angry diatribes while the crowd carried signs comparing Walker to dictators and yelled thunderous chants of “this is what democracy looks like.”

“This is so not the end,” said protester Judy Gump, a 45-year-old English teacher at Madison Memorial High School. “This is what makes people more determined and makes them dig in.”

Walker’s signature on the measure capped a week of political maneuvering to end a bitter, month-long standoff that began when the state’s 14 Democratic senators fled to Illinois in an ultimately futile attempt to block the legislation.

Throngs of protesters gathered Saturday outside a convention center where senators made their first public appearances in Madison since ending their self-imposed exile. Demonstrators treated the lawmakers like rock stars, yelling “Fab 14, our heroes!” and giddily snapping pictures.

All 14 Democrats later marched around the Capitol, trading chants of “thank you” with protesters who ringed the sidewalks. When the senators made their way to a stage, they promised to shift their energies toward recall drives already under way against eight of their GOP colleagues.

“Now … we trade in our rally signs for clipboards and we take to the streets to recall the Republicans,” Sen. Chris Larson of Milwaukee told the cheering crowd, “and in one year we recall the governor that refuses to listen.”

Walker is not eligible to be recalled until he completes his first year in office in January 2012.

Eight of the Democrats also face recall efforts. Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald issued a statement Saturday calling them the most shameful 14 people in the state.

“(Fleeing to Illinois) is an absolute insult to the hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites who are struggling to find a job, much less one they can run away from and go down to Illinois—with pay,” Fitzgerald said.

Walker’s plan has spurred a national debate over labor rights. Its passage is a key victory for Republicans who have targeted unions in efforts to cut government spending across the country. Democrats see it as a blatant attempt to weaken organized labor, one of their strongest campaign allies.

Labor leaders have promised to use the setback to fire up members and mount a major counterattack against Republicans at the ballot box in 2012.

“We’re never going to give up,” said Marilyn Rolfsmeyer, 56, who serves as the 300-student Argyle School District’s only art teacher. “What part of it don’t they understand? There’s hope here. I feel it. You feel the energy, the intensity. Somebody’s got to be out there feeling it, too.”

Dozens of fist-pumping farmers drew cheers as they chugged around the Capitol square in tractors bearing signs with messages such as “planting the seeds for a big season of recalls.”

Tod Pulvermacher, 33, of Bear Valley, towed a manure spreader carrying a sign that read, “Walker’s bill belongs here.”

“Farmers are working-class Americans,” he said as the crowd cheered. “We work for a living as hard as anybody, and this is about all of us.”

Walker has repeatedly argued that ending collective bargaining gives local governments much-needed flexibility to confront cuts in state aid necessary to fix Wisconsin’s deficit, which is expected to grow to $3.6 billion deficit over two years.

The new law erases public workers’ ability to collectively bargain anything except wages up to the rate of inflation. It also requires them to contribute more to their pensions and health care, changes that amount to an 8 percent pay cut. Police and firefighters are exempt.

The Senate Democrats had fled to deny Republicans, who hold a 19-14 Senate majority, the 20-member quorum needed to vote on measures that spend money. But GOP leaders worked around them Wednesday, calling a special committee to take spending items out of Walker’s proposal.

The Senate passed it 18-1 minutes later. Assembly Republicans approved it the next day.

Democratic Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk has filed a lawsuit seeking to block the secretary of state from publishing the law, the last step before it takes effect. She argues the bill still contained fiscal items and that the committee meeting violated Wisconsin’s open meeting law.

Aside from deminishing their bloated pension and insurance plans they might see that the extra money NOT going to elect candidates of the Union leaders choosing will be in their pockets. The lowering of standards has been going on for over 45 years. It is a statistical fact that only 41% of 4 year graduate students can read and extrapolate accurate information from complex text. These figures reflect the results of a study done at Harvard and Yale. The average “high school” grad reads at what was the 5th grade level in in 1970. Additionally the study done on college grads found that most were UNABLE to perform simple tasks such as figure price per pound on food items and were unable to correctly balance a checkbook.

Only by lowering standards can the states receive more money for “better education”. When all that is required to graduate is the ability to properly spell your own name, most kids will be able to graduate. Until keep an eye out for the falling standards.

ChiefGeorge…. let’s not forget that we are a Republic. What is happening in Wis. with these demonstrators and legislators is democracy (socialism) in action. It is certainly not, and has not been for weeks, the Republic that has been established (with the exception of the legislatures move to eliminate collective bargaining while the Dems were absent). The legislators fleeing the state has no part in this great country’s system of government. There needs to be some legislation passed, and soon, that would make this kind of legilative display illegal in the future. Ignoring ones responsibility in office should be a crime.

Bargaining for hours and pay is not a right. If you feel you deserve a raise, or your company offers a flex work schedule, you go to your boss/supervisor (not the governor) and state your case. Do you actually believe that you can use “Democracy” and “Republic” as a compound word? They are diametric opposites. Read the federalist papers. We are a “federated” Republic.

A Democracy in ANY form is mob rule. 51% overrules 49%.
In a Republic everyone has the right to decide for themselves what is best for them. Today as then we have a choice to be a “person” in statute, or be a individual Man who is responsible for themselves and there is NO victimless crime. That Democratic republic BS is socialist revision of history and a direct result of the poor education system I see today.

It is and always has been a fact that the socialist left (looney left) will fight harder and longer to keep their hand in your pocket, than you will to make them take it out.

They will never remove their hand voluntarily, it is up to you to make them; and, baby it is obvious that means a fight.

I put the blame almost soely on the Left Wing Media. We have always had people in this country that wanted to do her harm, but never before have we had such a lazy, dishonest, one-sided, greedy, selfish, socialist, communist, naive, egotistical, unpatriotic bunch of propagandists running our new outlets. Most of these people should be tried for treason. Or at least fired for imcompidence. Too many people totally believe the propaganda that is spewed out of their mouths (You know who i am talking aboug MSBC, NBC, ABC, CNN, NPR) and then vote to keep the enemies of true freedom in power. Wake Up America!!! We are underseige. Liberty as we know is about to be lost forever.
Whatever happened to “Love thy neighbor” ; “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”; “Love thy God”; “ Be a moral people”. We, as a nation, must get back to those principles that made us great. Those principles and ordinances that made us a chosen people of God the Father who is in Heaven.
Remember, it is not your government or your union that gives you inalienable rights. It is our God!

      @Shane0143.
Good point and further on Obama’s position or lack thereof, the education system has been dumbing down the curriculum for years and the fruits of their labor are now ready to harvest. The latest data available in MO show that 42% of high school graduates who go on to college need at least one year of remedial work and 28% need two years which is great for the colleges who now have tuition payments for five or six years, but not so great for parents, taxpayers, or students. Back in the dark ages (the 60′s) when I was in school, a goal was set to raise the bar and reward achievement, but nowadays it seems the goal is to lower the bar to get more to pass and competition is considered bad. Just wait until these students get out into the real world, i.e. one where they are rewarded and advanced based on individual merit and not union dictated norms.

These fools need to be impeached and replaced by people who care for the future of all Wisconians (?), not just the public sector. Those college students, for the most part, aren’t tax payers yet and have no clue what they are supporting, probably getting an assured grade from their entitled profs for showing up. It is a shame representatives elected by all sectors across Wisconsin have sided with one group with no regard for the rest of the population, some of whom are jobless, lost their homes, or are below poverty level.

      ELECTION FRAUD!!! Thats how!!!!!!
the polls across America are rigged
here in Oregon the sec of state just decided that blank, unused paper ballots should be kept after the election is over ‘just to protect from disenfranchisement’. These blank, unused paper ballots have always been distroyed immediatly sfter the polls closed.
But not any more! Now they are available to be used for potential fraud.
      Why the change?
Because republicans are beginning to close the gap on the democratically controlled government here.
Well, we can’t have THAT in Oregon now can we?
So in addition to felons, illegal aliens with fake id, the dead, and people casting multiple ballots, we now also have these blank baoolts to play hanky panky with in the close elections where republicans are slightly ahead.
AND THE UNIONIZED PUBLIC EMPLOYEES ARE IN CHARGE OF THE ENTIRE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION.

These 14 Democratic senators in Wisconsin won’t be needing a fake medical excuse from their bosses.
      THEY ARE MARCHING IN THE CAPITAL WITH THEIR BOSSES. U N I O N B O S S E S!!!!!!

Because they would lose that vote all over again and then some. These people found out a long time ago in this country that if you put just enough pressure on Government with this kind of staged event the government would then have a reason to roll over and give to the people what they want. Problem is they have been doing this for so long, the people now know they can vote themselves more money from the treasury. Someone said that once. Looks like we don’t teach history in this country or people would know better. But then again there are a lot of things they should know better. What we are seeing are desperate measures by desperate people because the finances, influence, and power unions have historically wielded in recent times is closely tied to the success and ability of left leaning politicians to get elected and then stay in power. This then feeds the incestuous relationship with kick backs and favored positions for union leadership in a sick symbiotic preservation of power that is completely self-serving for both parties. Of course the average Joe worker is caught in the middle of this exploitative situation, and when it is threatened they make a very nice and sincere “ready to arms” force that is all to willing to thwart its dismantling. All under the deception that the politicians and union leaders have an altruistic concern for their welfare and position in life. When will people wake up to their own exploitation and manipulation by those selling modern day “snake oil” in the reformed package of, “let me take care of you and look out for your welfare, just give me the authority to do it”? It is the power and money their positions provide for them that they care about ! Not other people.

Marching (petitioning the government for redress of grievances) is a constitutionally protected right, and something both sides do as part of advocacy–conservatives need to stop pretending they think its universally negative, because their actions say they think otherwise. So either stop protesting, marching, going to town hall meetings, and holding demonstrations, or stop complaining when the Left does it and criticize actual policy measures and proposals, preferably suggesting your own alternatives.

When a private company and the union meet to bargain that’s one thing. The owner or owners are involved in the process and it’s fair in a sense because they have a stake in the outcome. We as the taxpayers don’t get a say in union collective bargaining with government workers!! We are the owners. We are the ones footing the bill. We have a stake in the outcome but no voice! Therefore it is unfair when government workers’ unions bargain for increases in pay and benefits while we are stuck with the bill. If government workers are allowed to bargain for increases then we the tax payers should get to vote on whether to accept the terms or not!

As perverted as this may seem, there is almost no company that is too small to become a target of a union, as long as there are at least two employees.

Even worse, adding to the already-lengthy trail of industrial carnage left by unions, American labor law gives today’s unions the right to destroy small companies under the guise of unionizing employees. This is particularly true in the construction industry where, all too often, unions and their unionized employers compete for work against non-union companies in a Darwinian death dance.

      strike_notice

Very often, because of their costly benefits and often-underfunded pension plans, union contractors fail to get the work while non-union contractors get the work. This leaves union tradesmen unemployed–sitting “on the bench.”

With less construction being done these days, the high rate of unemployment among construction unions has led many of them to target non-union contractors for the sole purpose of unionizing them in order to get the work. In other words, because they already have enough unemployed members, they don’t want the workers–they want their work.

One of the more insidious ways that unions are allowed to unionize companies is through the practice of “salting.” Salting is the union tactic of sending one or more union members into a non-union company for the sole purpose of unionizing the company from within.

A union salt’s job is to infiltrate, as well as to spy on the company and its employees, to report back to the union bosses, as well as agitate and unionize the workers. Then, once the job of unionizing the company is finished, the salt typically moves on—often to the next vulnerable company.

      According to this IBEW website:

“Salting” is the deliberate act of getting a job at a specific workplace with the intent to organize a union. Most union campaigns start with a lone individual or small group of individuals with no union experience deciding to organize a union from scratch. Sometimes, a union campaign can be strengthened if you know of a friend with union organizing experience. By applying for open positions at your workplace, your friend can secretly help you organize your workplace. There are other circumstances where salting is used.

      [snip]

      * Salting is systematically placing our union members on nonunion job sites for the purpose of organizing.
      * Salting is a federally protected activity that ensures the right to organize
      * Salting is when a member keeps a daily log book
      * Salting is when a member compiles a list of all ongoing job
      * Salting is when a member compiles a list of all employees
      * Salting is when a member listens to the concern of other employees
      * Salting is when a member participates in concerted activities. i.e.: passing around a petition to better conditions on the job
      * Salting is when a member polices unfair labor practices, wage and code violations
      * Salting is when a member comes off the job when the organizing campaign is over

For more IBEW salting tactics, go here.

While the practice often happens to small companies here in the U.S., here is how “salting” affected one husband and wife who became the target of the IBEW in Canada.

Arc Electrical Ltd. is a small company run by a young couple from their home, where babies and bookkeeping occupy the president, Bridget Carey, better known as Mom.

It grew from nothing in 2007 to have six employees and total work in 2009 in the $600,000 range, led by Bridget’s husband Andy Nita, 36, also an instructor at Algonquin College.

      The future looked bright.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, meanwhile, is the largest union of electricians in the world, with 725,000 members, and an Ottawa local with a high-profile membership drive underway.

In the fall of 2009, the IBEW tried to unionize the workers at Arc Electrical.

There is no other way to describe the outcome than a complete mess, so bad it was raised on the floor of the Ontario legislature.

To an outsider, it’s a story full of shocking twists and turns. “I was,” concludes Nita, “just blown away.”

      To fast-forward to the end:

      * The vote, after fits and starts, ended up deadlocked at 3-3, meaning the application failed, but not before it cost Arc about $60,000 in legal fees and substitute labour costs.
      * The couple suspect Arc was “salted” by the IBEW, meaning a pro-union worker was directed there, with the express purpose of organizing the remaining staff.
      * Because the three pro-union workers left shortly after the vote, Nita had to scramble to fulfill his contracts, working 18-hour days for about a month straight, with a pregnant wife at home.
      * In their words, Arc has been “decimated” and is now down to Nita and a part-time apprentice.
      * Battered by the experience, Nita decided to take a full-time job at Algonquin, rather than risk waging war with the IBEW again.
      * The divisions over union membership are so deep that Nita says he’s been the target of veiled threats by IBEW members in his own classroom.

“It knocked us back right to the beginning,” said Nita. “We’ve lost two years of time invested.”

Read more of the Carey’s story here.

While unions here in the U.S. already win around two-thirds of the elections to unionize companies, Democrats in control of Congress have tried pass a law called the Employee Free Choice Act, which would effectively eliminate secret-ballot elections. If EFCA gets passed in Congress, President Obama has repeatedly said he would sign it into law.

Instead of trying to change the laws to make it easier for unions to use deceitful tactics like “salting,” perhaps its time to further look into unions and the dirty bag of tricks they use on workers and companies.

Until then, as unions work to put small, family-owned companies like the Carey’s out of business, instead of being “proud to be union,” they really should be ashamed of themselves.
