All Fall Down: Dow Jones CEO and WSJ Publisher Resigns Amid News Corp. Scandal

Les Hinton, the chief executive of Dow Jones & Co., resigned Friday as a result of unrest caused by the News Corp. phone-hacking scandal. This makes him the latest executive to step down because of growing pressure rising from the story.

Hinton served as executive chairman of the British unit that oversaw the News Corp.’s U.K. tabloid newspapers that have become the focus of the scandal. He held that post for 12 years. Hinton was also a member of the board of The Associated Press and became head of Dow Jones in December 2007, after its acquisition by News Corporation.

According to the Associated Press, “Hinton’s resignation Friday comes on the same day that News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks quit, following the phone hacking scandal that has rocked Rupert Murdoch’s news empire.”

In a statement released earlier Friday, Hinton claims that he was “ignorant of what apparently happened” but felt it was appropriate that he resign.

“He apologized for the hurt caused by the actions of journalists who worked for the now-shuttered tabloid, News of the World.”

Included in a farewell e-mail sent out Friday afternoon, Hinton wrote:

“News Corp under Rupert’s brilliant leadership has proved a fitting parent of Dow Jones, allowing us to invest and expand as other media companies slashed costs. This support enabled us together to strengthen the company during a brutal economic downturn, developing fine new products – not to mention one of the world‘s great newspapers led by one of the world’s great editors, my dear friend and colleague Robert Thomson.”

It continued, “However difficult this moment is for me, I depart with the certain knowledge that we have built the momentum to take Dow Jones on to ever greater things.”

In response to the resignation that came as a surprise to many, Rupert Murdoch wrote an e-mail to Dow Jones employees that read:

“On this difficult day we should appreciate that [Hinton's] extraordinary work has provided a platform for the future success of Dow Jones. And his great contribution to News Corporation over more than five decades has enhanced innumerable lives, whether those of employees hired by him or of readers better informed because of him.”

It is unclear where the chips may fall, but so far it does not look good for Murdoch’s news empire.

What is happening is the liberals and commies are using this to take down a conservative media mogul. These crimes (if they are crimes) are minor and there is no proof Murdoch knew about them. I bet if he did, he maintained plausible deniability. Fox and the other Murdoch operations are the only conservative media we have in America. We can’t let them be destroyed.

The left knows all about plausible deniability, they, and the Obama administration have been using it for years. The difference is, the left promotes its culprits (ususlly finding a home with the Obama administration or Spooky Dude) and the right fires/or allows to resign, theirs. Murdoch will come out of this but the MSM will drag it on and on getting the most damage as possible out of it.

      set-up . yes.

      now for some questions:
1- why is it ok for all the other media sites to hack e-mails and the like and defame consevatives and libertarians?
2- why is it ok for them to fabricate lies and/or take things completely out of context?
3- why are their no inquaries into these nefarious actions?
4- why is it that when I watch the other so called news there is no to extremely scant mention of the financial crisis, oil/gas crsis, food crisis, cotton shortage, the middle east’s plan to erradicate once and for all the Children of The Book(that’s you out there who are either Jews or Christians)-(and if you did not know who the Children of the Book are :WHY NOT)
I believe the answers quite clear. I also believe that this will be one of our mkost powerful weapons. For example : when questioned by progressives on redistribution to help the poor. That in a civilized society it is to be expected. My answer is : “Scince when is theft civilezed and it is multiple theft. 1GOV ,2 The leaches demanding a free ride , and 3 the leaches commit a third and greater theft. The theft of thier own freedom by self enslavement to the government.”

Get prepared the fight is on!

@ thebarbarian: The answer to your question is obvious: Because they can! Do they ask if it is right or moral before the left does the nasty and despicable things they routinely do to us? No, they just do it. Do we want to do nasty and despicable things right back to them? Oh yes we do! But for the most part, we don’t. Curious, eh? Are we better than them? In effect, yes we are. So where is the justice and the good winning over evil we were all taught about? Our God in some ways makes us weak because we adhere to rules and morals that the other side has no compunctions about violating. They are despicable, we are good. They are liars and obfuscators, we are kind and truth tellers. So we must rely upon God to protect us also. That’s why they call it faith. But God helps those who help themselves. So we must fight them as best we can while still remaining a good, moral people and true to our One God. If we do that, God will intervene on our behalf. For example; We probably should never have won WWII. We were pathetic at first. But we did the right thing and confronted evil face to face and remained a God loving people. So God unsheathed his invisible sword and brought improbable victory to us. Now is no different than then except that the guns are abstract and the bullets are information. But the cause is just as vital and desperate. The future of humanity hangs in the balance. Slavery or Freedom, which do you choose? So fight the good fight! God is with us!

@Ibinaround2: The Left’s facts are more suspect than our hunches. Ordinary lefties are tools of their masters who are consummate liars. The Far Left has mastered the arts of propaganda and controlling the masses. It’s not fair or probable, I know, but it is absolutely true and extremely sad. Such a proud, just and mostly objective people we all used to be. Now you‘re all brainwashed if you’re associated with the Left. They found your weaknesses, exploited them and now they own you. Only the smartest and most intuitive among you will discover it before it destroys you. And your destruction is near. You won‘t believe that until it’s too late and that makes you fools. You have deserted God and he has turned his back on you in response. Without God there is nothing but the long road to death. With God all things beautiful, subtle and shot through with love and compassion are real.

The way to tell what a leftie is really saying is to transpose it 180 degrees. Whatever a Leftie accuses the Right of doing you can be sure that that’s EXACTLY what the Left is busily engaged in already. All of their “facts” are concoctions in the service of their delusions. Wake up or be destroyed.

I don’t really see what all the fuss is about. If there were some reporters that crossed ethical lines, this is supposed to be outrageous enough to stir up Parliament? (The MSM here isn’t unethical in its bias/cooperation (Fared Zackaria) with globalists and marxists here as SOP?) This just smells like a coordinated political plot. Why isn’t this just handled as an ethics violation issue with the reporters involved? Haven’t really followed the story much, but what I understand occurred doesn’t seem all that earthshattering. Paying for news stories, and illegal access to to phone records?

      Posted on July 15, 2011 at 11:28pm

Yeah, it’s hard to follow the story if you only get your news from Conservative outlets, since Rupert owns most of them. I don’t think it could be a “coordinated political attack” since it’s caused great humiliation to the Prime Minister who hired one of the central figures in the scandal, and who is from the majority and more liberal party, while the calls for investigations into whether they hacked phones in the U.S. has come from Republicans as much as Democrats. The reporters involved didn’t “cross ethical lines,” they broke laws repeatedly. After they got caught for this once Newscorp spent years trying to claim it was an isolated incident and continued to employ the other guilty parties. And they didn’t just pay for access to phone records, they listened to people’s private messages, and not just public figures for information of real news value, but crimes victims and families of dead soldiers to get exploitative human interest pieces. Fared Zackaria may be biased, but he’s not a criminal who hacks phones and interferes with police investigations to get gossip and puff pieces.

I don’t normally post provocative posts, but you are all showing how ill informed you are. You’re not stupid, that much I know, but you are ignorant on this issue. Several of Murdoch’s people have been arrested and others are under indictment for bribery or attempted bribary of London policemen. They’re are accussed of hacking into cell phones of a dead girl to hear the messages on her phone and further to delete some messages so that they could listen to further attempts to contact the dead teenager (which led police and her family to think she was still alive).

Now the FBI is investigating Murdoch for crimes committed in the US, such as hacking the phones of 9-11 victims for a story.

Sorry folks but Murdoch is trying to protect himself by firing people left and right to minimize the damage from a pervasive pattern of illegal and unethical activities. I suggest you turn a blind eye.

restored one…….Glenn was the only one we could depend on to show the truth anyway. The new five show isnt much more than a tabloid. I was exspecting something much better from Fox to replace an important show like Glenn provided. Cant wait till 9-12-11. Having withdrawls. Lotus.

@ LOTUS, I totally agree. I am just saying and now hoping that he did know and GBTV will only become bigger if FOX goes down. What we miss at 5pm may become 24/7 not just on the internet but maybe again on Cable. I am in no way trying discredit Glenn, this may have been what drove him to the plan. If so, he is amazingly brilliant.

I have a hunch we are looking at the next Enron style downfall; only it will be much larger, and much harder than that was..in the way it may collapse the managment structure of many businesses, and maybe lead to them shutting down. Any corruption found by legal authorities of crimes committed does need to be investigated, and if provable in courts of law, followed through on.

Let there be all misdeeds brought into the light.

      @Dealer

A witchhunt is brewing in the cauldron for sure.

The lefties are drooooling and foooaming over the chance to take Fox down and out.

As of now, there are no connection.

I think they will over reach.

But we must wait and see
