All You Need to Know About 4/20, the Marijuana-Centered Holiday Celebrated by College Students

(AP/The Blaze) – Students and others across the country have long observed April 20 as a day to celebrate marijuana. Here are some questions and answers about the counterculture holiday and the state of marijuana in the United States:
_____
WHO CELEBRATES? The observation is shared by marijuana users from San Francisco‘s Golden Gate Park to New York’s Greenwich Village. Last year, some 10,000 people gathered at the University of Colorado-Boulder to simultaneously smoke marijuana. This year, the university is shutting down a campus quad that hosts the annual 4/20 gathering. Organizers say the protest may be moved to a nearby off-campus neighborhood, which could cause clashes between police and protesters. A rally is planned for Denver near the state capitol on Friday and Saturday. Police have suggested they’ll be taking a hands-off approach to the gathering, which could draw tens of thousands of people. In Austin, Texas, country music legend Willie Nelson, who’s open about his marijuana use, was expected to help unveil an 8-foot statue of himself in downtown Austin at 4:20 p.m. local time.
WHAT’S IT MEAN? The number 420 has been associated with marijuana use for decades, though its origins are murky. Its use as code for marijuana spread among California pot users in the 1960s and spread nationwide among followers of the Grateful Dead. Like most counterculture slang, theories abound on its origin. Some say it was once police code in Southern California to denote marijuana use (probably an urban legend). It was a title number for a 2003 California bill about medical marijuana, an irony fully intended. Others trace it to a group of California teenagers who would meet at 4:20 p.m. to search for weed (a theory as elusive as the outdoor cannabis crop they were seeking). Yet the code stuck for obvious reasons: Authorities and nosy parents didn’t know what it meant.
HOW MANY STATES HAVE LEGALIZED MEDICAL MARIJUANA? In 1996, a ballot measure made California the first state to legalize medical marijuana. Sixteen states now allow the use of medicinal marijuana.
HOW MANY STATES ARE CONSIDERING LEGALIZING RECREATIONAL POT? Two states — Colorado and Washington — are considering legalizing pot for recreational purposes.
WHERE DOES THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT STAND? Marijuana use, sale and possession are illegal under federal law.

What, more Democrat “protection” based upon keeping the black man down? As with anti-gun laws (can’t trust an honest black man with a gun) . pro-abortion (Sanger Eugenics), “Great Society” help (from the biggest racist to ever hold office before O – LBJ who came up with a palatable way to keep (and return many) blacks into shackles – hint read LBj’s own words)
Wake up folks. Everything the Dems have done in the last 150 + years is designed to enslave not only the former black slaves, but every other non-elitist (regular) citizen

Posted on April 21, 2012 at 1:29amTheRealLiberal, You just have a hard time understanding reality don’t you? First, Ron Paul does not condone drug use. He just is for states determining the laws. If a state has laws you do not like, you can vote with your feet, as Ronald Reagan stated (another Libertarian thinker). When the federal government makes a law that all states must abide by, there is loss of freedom. Second, No matter what type of bigotry is imbedded in your brain, marijuana has medicinal properties. I am a cargiver (caregivers cannot legally smoke marijuana, so do not think I am a pothead) for my son who has epilepsy from a traumatic brain injury he received when he was young. His neurologist tried several different medications that did not work, so he had us try marijuana after he turned 21. Instead of 3-4 seizures per month on meds, he now only has one every 8 months or so by smoking a few puffs three times a day. But with the federal law in place, it does not matter that it is prescribed by his neurologist and is legal for him in this state, he could be arrested if he were camping on federal land. That is a bad law that needs to go away. It violates my son’s rights and his personal relationship with his doctor. Wise up man.

We, as a society, have to be prepared to let them lay there rather than trying to help them and unfortunately we have lost the will to do just that. We are not so inclined to be willing or prepared to let the others live with the consequences and the personal responibilty of their choices

Posted on April 21, 2012 at 12:14pmOk first off, Ron Paul doubtedly gets high. There’s a big difference between being pro drug use, and being pro drug legalization. U so-called conservatives think there’s nothing wrong w the national gov telling citizens what they can and cant do in the privacy of their own home when it comes to different drugs, but wonder why u cant get a hardcore states‘ and individual rights candidate who’ll actually shrink government and not just talk about it elected? You cant have ur cake and eat it too. if you want more freedom, u have to accept that there must be more personal responsibility, too. Legalizing drugs wont cause a giant boost in drug use by most americans. Guess what? theres already a TON of americans on illegal drugs. U dont realize how many people u encounter everyday on drugs if u dont pay close attention. Guess what else? ur kids already have complete and total easy access to drugs. It doesnt matter where u live, they r literally everywhere n much bigger amounts than u, or the police realize. My point is not to scare u or make u think that this should be a big concern, my point is that anyone that really wants to use illegal drugs, already can, and prob does. So legalizing them wont change usage. What it will do is take power from the fda. U know, that big gov run, corrupt org that is in the pocket of all the huge prescription drug companies?
Report Post »2Fedup
Posted on April 21, 2012 at 12:30pmThe FDA puts out new “great” drugs every year. Start paying attention to the new drug commercials and then notice the lawyer commercials. Almost all of the new “wonderful” drugs that come out end up killing people and having waaay worse side affects that we find out about 3 years later. Guess how much money was made in that time though? The fda now only requires a drugs benefits to generally outway it’ side effects. Usually some people get some benefit and others get bad reactions. Its a multi billion dollar rackit. Guess what else? U know where the violent thugs and gangs get all their resources to control whole portions of cities, and prisons, and countries like mexico? It aint from gun running. It from selling illegal drugs to americans. No amount of task forces will ever put more than a miniscule dent in this, despite what those whose jobs r n this area tell u. they rnt close and never have been. u know why prohibition of alcohol was ended? because the gangsters were gettng filthy rich, w more money than ther cops and feds.Just like they r today selling drugs. u know how to ACTUALLY completly destroy their income, and thus their network and activities? Legalize drugs n america. i know its a scary thought for many of u, but it really is the only true solution, and it will not cause random kids smashed everywhere in the streets or driving deaths any more than already exists.

Posted on April 21, 2012 at 12:41pmBelieve me, i dont get high, and dont want to, i just have seen alot of that side of american culture. Our prisons wont be so overcrowded, and cops will be free to chase actual violent offenders instead of enfocing morality. Btw, here’s a bit more knowledge for the niave consrvs: 420 isnt just celebrated by college students in liberal big cities. If u have teenagers that skipped school yesterday . . . theres a(my own stat) 98% chance they smoke weed. I hate to break it to u, but dont be too hard on them. It really isnt as bad as u have been told. its not good, but it doesnt automatically make them destined for devil worship. I would just focus on getting them goal oriented for their future career and make sure they dont get sucked into leftwing ideology where being a total societal mooch and failure is accepted w open arms. Im sure u did something crazy once or twice when u were young, its the same thing. theyre likely looking to experiment w something taboo or be a crazy kid. Just try to keep it from consuming their life and theyll likely grow out of it, if u teach them about money and budgets and what it takes to raise a family and be successful. Class dismissed.

Posted on April 21, 2012 at 2:26pmTime_2, Are you showing your true colors again? You sit there and spout out at all Paul supporters that they are liberals, yet you often quote things that are liberal. Your quote comes from John Locke. Who is John Locke?
John Locke FRS (29 August 1632 – 28 October 1704), widely known as the Father of Classical Liberalism.
You must really love liberalism.
Do not get me wrong, Locke did have an influence on some of our founding fathers, even Thomas Jefferson. Some of his ideas were good, and he was an influence with the Declaration of Independence, but the fact that he is the father of classical liberalism, shows that you like the liberal mindset more than you let on.

Posted on April 21, 2012 at 2:57pmSo Ron Paul is a “drug pusher” since he believes in the entire Constitution and believes the States should have the power to decide their own drug policy by the will of their citizens rather than the Federal Government? And I suppose he must be a “drug pusher” since he wants to end a failed and pointless drug war that costs us Billions? Prohibition doesn’t work, and has never worked (read a history book). People are going to continue to use drugs, people are going to continue to supply those drugs, and we are going to continue spend billions to arrest and incarcerate those users and suppliers with little benefit to anybody.

They have used their scare tactics to stip citizens of rights and will forever do so until people are no longer afraid and take back the goverment. If you have never tried it, do so , become informed, learn for yourself, then when you do and find out that in moderation this can be a good thing, Vote for the legalizations of it. Posted on April 20, 2012 at 8:11pmThere is absolutely nothing wrong with marijuana and that’s the truth of it. Most of the things people believe wrong with it today is everything the good ol‘ gov’t told you that was wrong with it. It kills brains cells, and all that other nonsense they try to fill your head with thru the dare programs and what not thru public schools. I use to be one of those people, that is until i returned home from Iraq. Diagnosed with PTSD the doctors were pretty much feeding me pills I was on 9 at one time. Seroquel which is one of the very strong medication that was giving me weird side effects such as rapid heart beat. Doctors solution to fixing that was by placing me on beta blockers to slow down my heart rate… Really? I ended up getting my medical marijuana card, and it has really been the best thing for me. I’m a everyday smoker have been for 2 years and have had absolutely no side effects, i’ve been off the medication the doctors had me on, and i’ve been handling my PTSD much better than i was on the meds the doctor had me on. I think before people jump to conclusion assuming how bad marijuana is they should do a quick google search to kill all the myths that have been taught. Only reason marijuana has ever been assumed to kill brain cells was because back when testing on apes or monkeys, scientist forgot that you need oxygen in order for your brain to live. The lack of oxygen is what gave the apes damaged brain cells not the marijuana itself.

Posted on April 20, 2012 at 7:38pmI have to agree with a good portion of your post. The war on drugs has been successful in grabbing property from the stoners who get caught by the enforcers. They will strip you of your money, cars, guns, house, land, you name it they have confiscated it and it’s a HUGE revenue for the states. It really needs to end because if you take the profit motive “black market” out of pot it would quietly disappear from the perceived problem it is made out to be today.

Yep. Government run public schools are also the gateway into becoming little communist subjects. How the American people don’t see the conflict of interest in having the Government educate our children is beyond me.

Let’s try an experiment. Let these states do what they want. If you don’t like the result, don’t try it at home.

I wasn’t commenting about weed.
I was making an off-hand, off-topic comment about abortion.
I agree with you on the states rights issues on most things.
But I don’t think states, or the Fed have the right to give a green light to murder.

At least 48% of the country fits this description. You have to be a real dumba$$ to think the government can, and should, take care of you. I suspect pot fits in there somewhere.

Posted on April 21, 2012 at 12:35amNah, pot isn’t the cause. How does someone that thinks the federal government has no right to ban drugs depend on the government? Think maybe someone with an agenda uses the issue to divide limited government people into warring factions so they can’t accomplish anything?

Why can’t we support pot in moderation? If you’re getting high at home or in a bar, it’s none of your business. Let people be free and stop regulating their lives.
If I’m wrong, then don’t whine when the government makes eating meat illegal.

Posted on April 21, 2012 at 9:48amWhy dont you eat some perscribed zanex and wash it down with some wine hypocrites.
Ron Paul is correct, the war on drugs is a joke. Violent criminals should be in jail, not citizens who were caught smoking weed in a state like Nevada that have zero tolerance. If you have two felony strikes against you and you get caught driving through Nevada with a roach in your ashtray, its LIFE without Parole! You evangelicals support it while sipping the nectar of the devil.
God created the flower, man uses it in a unprocessed state, what is the problem? Could it be the gov does not make $ off of it, or is it the fact that Pharmaceutical companies would lose millions from it, Big oil is scarred to death from it as it produces more energy than sugar cane. Don’t forget that a new governmental study just came out that proves pot smoke does not hurt the lungs at all, does not even leave any tar or buildup according to lung tissue from deceased smokers. You cant say the same thing about the drugs most of you consume. Ie. caffeine, alchol and prescribed drugs so many of you are addicted to.
Obama is the worst president ever, but I give him credit for stoping mountain top coal removal and slowing down deep water drilling after horizon. Kudos to him for trying to get US on solar and wind. GOP should take away the lefts argument and support common sense approaches to getting off oil. Demcriminilize weed as well and open door for it as renewable energy, pharmacuticals, etc… Romeny = Ob

Anyone who already has two felony convictions to their credit should know enough to be very, very cautious about what they do, and where they do it.
If they are stupid enough to ring up a third? …………….sucks to be them, huh?
