Five GOP presidential contenders said they will boycott a planned debate hosted by Univision following allegations the network tried to blackmail Florida Sen. Marco Rubio by offering to soften a story in return for him appearing on one of its programs. (AP)
Five Republican presidential candidates said they will boycott a proposed Univision-sponsored debate in January after allegations emerged that the Spanish-language network tried to blackmail Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio over a story about his brother-in-law.
GOP contenders Mitt Romney, Herman Cain, Rick Perry, Jon Huntsman and Michele Bachmann all said Tuesday they will not participate in the planned debate until the alleged ethical breach involving Rubio — widely thought to be on the short list for the vice presidential nomination — is resolved, the Miami Herald reported.
According to the newspaper, which first posted a story on the allegations Saturday, Rubio repeatedly refused to appear on Univision’s liberal-leaning “Al Punto” show to discuss the Dream Act, which he staunchly opposes. Frustrated, the network dispatched its investigations unit during the summer to dig up a story on the 1987 cocaine arrest of Orlando Cicilia, Rubio’s brother-in-law. Both Rubio staffers and Univision insiders alleged the news director tried to make a deal with the senator: Appear on Al Punto and the network would kill or soften the story. Rubio declined, and the story ran on July 11, amid much hype.
Following the report, three Florida congressman sent open letters to Republican National Committee chair Reince Priebus on Monday, calling the revelations “offensive, unacceptable and demonstrat[ing] a lack of journalistic integrity” and urging all GOP hopefuls to boycott the debate, which has not been officially announced.
In a statement to the Associated Press on Tuesday, the network denied it tried to coerce Rubio into appearing on one of its programs in exchange for minimizing the decades-old story. On Monday, Univision had called the allegations “patently absurd” and said it would “respectfully decline” to apologize.
“With respect to Senator Rubio, Univision covered the [cocaine] story in the same objective, fair manner we cover every significant story,” the network said in a statement. “Univision did not offer to soften or spike a story about a major drug bust involving Senator Rubio’s relatives. We would not make such an offer to any other subject of a news story and did not offer it in this case.”
Still, Univision’s denial did not stop the five candidates from saying they would not participate in the debate.
“Governor Perry will not consider participating in the January 29, 2012, Univision debate until your network addresses this ethical breach and takes action to correct it,” a Perry campaign spokesman wrote Univision. “With NBC and Telemundo also hosting a debate the same weekend in January 2012, we will have ample opportunity to engage with Spanish-speaking Americans.”
In a statement, a Romney spokesman stood equally firm “We have not received any invitation from Univision for a debate, but we are troubled by these allegations and would not participate in any such debate unless and until Univision satisfactorily addresses this situation.”
Cain’s campaign issued a statement through Florida state Rep. Scott Plakon, who said the recent straw-poll winner is “out. Until Univision resolves this, he won’t participate in the debate like the other candidates.”
“Unless Univision resolves this issue in a timely and satisfactory manner, Governor Huntsman will not give consideration to your network’s debate currently proposed for January, 2012,” Huntsman’s campaign manager wrote Univision. “We ask the other Republican candidates to join us in this decision and will work with them to identify another forum to debate issues that are important to Americans of Hispanic descent in Florida and across our nation.”
Bachmann’s spokeswoman left the door open to the Minnesota congresswoman participating in the debate pending a satisfactory outcome: “This issue was brought to Michele’s attention and she has a great deal of respect for Senator Rubio,” she said. “We reserve our right to participate in the Univision debate pending a positive resolution of this matter by Univision.”
Rick Santorum’s campaign is reportedly reviewing the matter, according to the Associated Press, but has not announced whether he will boycott. None of the remaining candidates have yet declared their intentions.
Rubio‘s office has said only that the Herald’s story is “accurate” and refused to comment further.

Unfortunately, these backward brigands are given a platform to promote all the ideas that have kept their own countries in the dark ages, here in the United States.

I’ve read that Sen Rubio would not consider a run because he does not fit the Constitutional definition of American Born Citizen because of his families Cuban Roots.
Would love to see some other research on this point. If he doesn‘t fit for POTUS he couldn’t run for VP either. Personally I‘d love to see it’s not true, I love his insights into our form of government. He’d make a great VP or POTUS.

Rubio, nor Jindal as Leader1776 stated, are Constitutionally eligible to serve as President. Like Obama, neither are natural born citizens. Eligibility requires not just citizenship, but citizenship having the quality of being a natural born citizen.
Constitution, Art. 2, Sec. 1, “No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible … .”
Exempting a “citizen” from being a “natural born citizen” proves they aren’t equal, or no exemption was needed. Being not less than nor equal, a NBC must be more than the minimum requisite for citizenship then, which was US birth to a US citizen parent. Only US birth to US citizen parents (plural) is greater, thus defining a natural born citizen.[1]
The Supreme Court agreed in Minor v. Happersett, 1874. “The Court held that Minor was a member of the “class” of persons who were natural born citizens. They defined this class as those born in the US to “parents” (plural) who were citizens.” – Leo Donofrio, JD.
A natural born citizen while encompassing citizenship now granted by US birth, which wasn’t possible prior to the 1965 Immigration Act considered by many to be a misinterpretation of the 14th amendment, is a higher quality of citizenship also requiring both birth parents to be a US citizen.

Good point regarding Obama setting precedent. However even if violations go unchallenged, the Constitution, though sadly ignored, irrefutably remains intact.
Given the delay, perhaps it’s fortunate the courts due to lack of standing, declined to consider Obama’s ineligibility. By their inaction, they have not reinterpreted the existing meaning of Article 2, Section 1. Inaction doesn’t modify the Supreme Court case of Minor v. Happersett, 1874, wherein, “The Court held that Minor was a member of the “class” of persons who were natural born citizens. They defined this class as those born in the US to “parents” (plural) who were citizens.” – Leo Donofrio, JD.
Obama is not the first to usurp the Constitution.
Every president prior to the usurper Obama who was not a citizen at the time of the adoption of the Constitution, has been a natural born citizen except Chester Arthur. Well ahead of eventually realizing his greatest political ambition by assuming the presidency on September 19, 1881, Chester Arthur purposefully perpetrated an elaborate fraud to hide the fact that his emigrated Irish father had not become a naturalized US citizen until August 1843, fourteen years after our 21st president was born in 1829 at Fairfield, Vermont.[1]

But, what they are speaking of is the requirement for American Born Citizen to be constitutionally recognized as being the child of 2 American born Citizens, so that the POTUS’ loyalties are to the US and not a foreign country.

Minor vs Happersett was a case revolving around the State of Virginia’s law declaring that every male shall be entitled to vote and a woman wanted to vote. Woman’s suffrage was the case, not citizenship. Beside the 19th Amendment overruled the results of the Minor vs Happersett case.
The Hart Cellar Act of 1965 is about immigration quotas, not citizenship.

Posted on October 6, 2011 at 5:05pmTeapartyConman, knows perfectly well that in Minor v Happersett the Supreme Court specifically stated that the full definition of a natural born citizen was not a settled issue and that they were not ruling on it because it had nothing to do with the case at hand.
“Some authorities go further and include as citizens children born within the jurisdiction without reference to the citizenship of their parents. As to this class there have been doubts, but never as to the first. For the purposes of this case it is not necessary to solve these doubts.”
And he also knows that they did finally rule on it in US v Wong Kim Ark (1898). That’s the binding precedent that has been the law of our land ever since, and it says you just have to be born here, it doesn’t matter who your parents were. The Court cited dozens of previous court cases and legal texts in their decisions, but the only reference to Minor v Happersett was to the part I have quoted, saying that it is not a decision on the meaning of natural born citizen. The bottom line is Obama and Rubio are both fully eligible to run.

Please note that the parents are not required to be US born; either or both parents may be a naturalized citizen, providing that naturalization was completed prior to the child’s birth.
Constitution, Art. 2, Sec. 1, “No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible … .”
Constitution, 19th Amendment, Section 1, “The right of the citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”
Article 2, Section 1, was not modified by the 19th amendment.
The Supreme Court in Minor vs Happersett, 1874, while considering the variables affecting Minor’s vote, took Minor’s citizenship into account and in so doing determined that she was a natural born citizenship. The issues are directly related rather than mutually exclusive, nor is it prohibited but in fact, perfectly acceptable for the court to provide an opinion on both.

Posted on October 5, 2011 at 2:03pmShouldn’t go on this anyway, this is one of the biggest supports of La Raza and Illegal Immigration. Why would you go on a network that supports what your voters don’t like?

Posted on October 5, 2011 at 2:20pmWhat Rubio should now do is stage his OWN town-hall meeting (offering the TV coverage rights to ALL local Spanish-speaking TV station, but SPECIFICALLY barring Univision) and invite these candidates to an ACTUAL debate. I’m sure he could find enough INTELLECTUALLY HONEST and qualified Spanish speaking (Latinos AND non-Latinos) moderators from across the U.S.
The Latino vote is too important for ANY candidate to ignore, and is NOT by ANY means fully in the bag for Obama and his socialist Democrat Party (which, sadly, appears to be the case for the Black vote).

Posted on October 5, 2011 at 2:02pmAgenda journalism. Typical Progressives.
A 1987 cocaine arrest of Rubio’s brother-in-law?? Very weak, Univision. Very, very weak. How about an investigation of his aunt‘s friend’s brother jaywalking in 1960?
