Allen West Calls Trayvon Martin Shooting an ‘Outrage’ and Endorses Federal Investigation

Ever since his CPAC Keynote Address in 2010, Rep. Allen West (R-FL) has been one of the gold standards of modern American political conservatism. He has also been widely hailed as a political model for conservative African American politicians. And now, following recent revelations surrounding the highly suspicious shooting of Trayvon Martin, Rep. West has joined a growing bipartisan consensus calling for the case to be reopened, possibly even with Federal assistance. West’s statement, put out today by Talking Points Memo, resonates with controlled fury (emphasis added):
itself in Sanford, Florida involving the shooting of 17-year-old Treyvon Martin. First of all, if all that has been reported is accurate, the Sanford Police Chief should be relieved of his duties due to what appears to be a mishandling of this shooting in its early stages. The US Navy SEALS identified Osama Bin Laden within hours, while this young man laid on a morgue slab for three days. The shooter, Mr Zimmerman, should have been held in custody and certainly should not be walking free, still having a concealed weapons carry permit. From my reading, it seems this young man was pursued and there was no probable cause to engage him, certainly not pursue and shoot him….against the direction of the 911 responder. Let’s all be appalled at this instance not because of race, but because a young American man has lost his life, seemingly, for no reason. I have signed a letter supporting a DOJ investigation. I am not heading to Sanford to shout and scream, because we need the responsible entities and agencies to handle this situation from this point without media bias or undue political influences. This is an outrage.
Similar sentiments were expressed yesterday in an op ed published yesterday by the author of the law between which George Zimmerman has tried to shield his actions – a defense that is becoming increasingly implausible-sounding. The author, Dennis Baxley, completely disowns Zimmerman’s actions:
As the prime sponsor of this legislation in the Florida House, I’d like to clarify that this law does not seem to be applicable to the tragedy that happened in Sanford. There is nothing in the castle doctrine as found in Florida statutes that authenticates or provides for the opportunity to pursue and confront individuals, it simply protects those who would be potential victims by allowing for force to be used in self-defense.[...]
Mr. Zimmerman’s unnecessary pursuit and confrontation of Trayvon Martin elevated the prospect of a violent episode and does not seem to be an act of self-defense as defined by the castle doctrine. There is no protection in the “Stand Your Ground” law for anyone who pursues and confronts people.
I have great sympathy for the family of Trayvon Martin and am grateful that things are finally moving in the right direction to further explore what actually happened on that night in Sanford, Florida. Awaiting the convening of the grand jury, I trust that justice will be served and healing will begin for all of those affected.
As of yet, there is no indicator that Zimmerman will be indicted or arrested for his actions, though the Martin family will be filing a wrongful death lawsuit against him. Unfortunately for all concerned, this case is far from resolved, and probably the full, painful story will not be known until the case has been fought in court.

Posted on March 22, 2012 at 8:41pmEvery single week there are stories in the US media about someone accidentally shooting an innocent young woman in the neck in a church, or a kid killing their little brother in their own home by accident, or a crazy person shooting their family or classmates, or a nine-year old sheriff’s son allowed to shoot an automatic weapon and instead shooting himself in the face in public at a gun show.
This occurs ONLY because of unrestricted gun access. Tens of thousands of innocent lives are lost each year in America because of accidents, or mental illness, or someone being drunk and angry and there being a gun in the house. This is one of the main reasons why our violent death rates are so many times (! times means hundreds of percent) higher than that of Spain, France, Italy, Germany, and Switzerland.

The murder rate since that time has risen 134 percent (77.8 per 100,000 population) while the overall rate for the country has declined 2 percent. [Crime went down 30% in one year, after the Heller SCOTUS decision] Washington, D.C., politicians find it easy to blame Virginia’s less-stringent gun laws for the D.C. murder rate. Yet Virginia Beach, Virginia’s largest city with almost 400,000 residents, has had one of the lowest rates of murder in the country — 4.1 per 100,000…
Vermont has the least restrictive gun-control law. It recognizes the right of any Vermonter who has not otherwise been prohibited from owning a firearm to carry concealed weapons without a permit or license. Yet Vermont has one of the lowest crime rates in America, ranking 49 out of 50 in all crimes and 47th in murders.
States which have passed concealed-carry laws have seen their murder rate fall by 8.5 percent, rapes by 5 percent, aggravated assaults by 7 percent and robbery by 3 percent.
Texas is a good example. In the early 1990s, Texas’s serious crime rate was 38 percent above the national average. Since then, serious crime in Texas has dropped 50 percent faster than for the nation as a whole. All this happened after passage of a concealed-carry law in 1994.”

Posted on March 23, 2012 at 12:07amI love when gun advocates use Vermont as an example of how no gun laws necessarily leads to low crime. It fails to consider how sparsely populated the state is and how rural it is. Sure, if you live in Vermont or Montana, I‘m pretty sure you don’t need restrictive gun laws. Chances are you live in the wilderness anyways. If you live in Massachusetts, with has 12 times the population, living in mostly urban areas, the equation changes.
Massachusetts, btw, has a lower incidence of firearms related deaths than Vermont: both of which have a lower rate than Texas.Come to think of it, ironically, most of those liberal Northeastern states have lower rates than Texas, or most other “gun friendly” states, for that matter.

That doesn’t mean jack squat. Massachusetts still has way more crime than Vermont. While firearm incidents may go down, for lack of guns, crime is still up. Criminals will use whatever weapon or instrument available, if they can’t use guns. Getting rid of guns does not lower crime. The liberals yet, once again, fail to realize that a lack of religion, morality and education is what largely causes crime, immorality and violence to prosper.

If the local police can not handle the investigation then they should turn it over to the state police. Once again a republican who calls himself a conservative calls for more federal overreach.
Sheeple…. Wake up. Just because he has a forceful presence when he speaks does not make him a conservative. Mr West, while he may at one time have been a conservative, once he arrived in Washington he was co-opted by the “party” and has lost his independant conservative values.

Posted on March 22, 2012 at 8:34pmGo ahead and say it lameliberals call him what you want to call him. You know the word that zimmerman called Trayvon. I love it. That’s what that sellout deserves. Him and herman cain. Youre right to turn on him like the black community has always told him you guys would. That’s good for his ass! Thank you for proving us right. We tried to tell him that the hateful nasty republicans party is no place for a real black person. See he never believed it when we tried to tell people like him that you guys would easily justify his son being shot. I absolutely love that you are saying this about him. He has nowhere to go now. The black community should spit in his face too. Just like you want to do. Say it man say it….confirm what we’ve always told sellouts like him about what republicans really think about him and his family. Thank you. That’s what needs to happen to him cain and watts…say the word man say it.. you know you want to call him that word….your definitely thinkin it! Hey you clown allen west, WE TOLD YOU SO!!!

Posted on March 22, 2012 at 7:38pmWest is correct. Of course it should be looked into further. Farrakhan, on the other hand, saw Martin’s color, and Zimmerman’s color, and only then does he have any interest.

Posted on March 23, 2012 at 6:45amcorrect on both parts! of course, Calypso Louie DOES have ‘special insight’ into this type of crime; having been a participant in the murder of Malcom X

Posted on March 22, 2012 at 7:35pmYou would think the killings in Chicago last week would need an investigation lot more than the tables turned on a “hoody”.

Posted on March 22, 2012 at 7:41pmIt has nothing to do with him being black, it has everything to do with him thinking the federal government is the answer. He’s shown his hand. He’s not the guy who sounds so wonderful when he speaks. Actually, I’ve seen one site saying this tea party darling was a moderate Republican. He was a patriot who served his country well in the military, then Washington corrupted him like McCain.

Posted on March 22, 2012 at 9:19pmAn investigation needs to be done for sure but the biggest story here is the way the news media is fanning the flames to pit blacks against whites. This guy was Hispanic but close enough for the news media which takes every chance it can to encourage blacks to hate whites and when whites are victimized by blacks they look the other way. It’s like the news media has the devil in their heads. Its been going on for a good 30 years.

Posted on March 22, 2012 at 9:31pmChicago‘s killings are Chicago’s problem. West is only stepping in to comment because the local police force failed to do their duty and properly handle the investigation. Incompetence or racist or whatever the reason, they failed to do the job. I think the State level police force should handle it before the feds are called in. Regardless, this guy should be detained (even if for his own safety) until the investigation is conducted.

Posted on March 23, 2012 at 9:40amMy comment was directed at Repuplicorp because all he does here is bash Dr. Paul. I didn’t read your original post until now. And since you called me out… You‘re pretty high on yourselve thinking I’d even respond to your drivel. I think justice wasn’t served in this case, and it needs to be corrected, however I think it needs to be corrected at the State level. I‘m really bent out of shape about Allen West becaue his actions don’t match his rhetoric. It hurts more when you have such a high regard for him before you find out he’s just another Washington shill. Not because of the color of this skin, but because he’s a fellow veteran, which I hold in HIGH regard. When one of my brothers in arms abandons their oath to defend the constitution, I feel betrayed, more than I would if a civilian does it.

My kid wears a hoodie. He is not black. I would hate to see a neighborhood watch guy shoot him just because he was walking through a neighborhood or cutting across a yard.
mohavegreen: The kid might have simply been walking through a neighborhood from point A to point B & nothing more.
