Allen West Defends Obama‘s ’Food Stamp President’ Label: ‘It’s a Fact’

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has received some harsh criticism from Democrats and liberal commentators who allege that when the former Speaker calls Barack Obama the “food stamp President,” he does so to reinvigorate racial prejudices against America’s first black President.
Speaking on Fox News Monday morning, Florida Rep. Allen West — the sole Republican member in the Congressional Black Caucus — said that Gingrich’s claim has nothing to do with racism but rather the reality of increasing poverty in America since Barack Obama took office.
“There is no race code. It’s a fact, since President Obama has been in office, you’ve seen a 4 to 1 increase in food stamp recipients in the United State of America,” West said. “We have a President that is making more Americans victims, rather than making them victors.
“We also have a 16 percent increase in Americans on the poverty role. 6.4 Million more Americans are on poverty since President Obama took office.”
On CNN’s State of the Union Sunday, Gingrich defended his comments and scolded those who allege racism as a means to deflect criticism of President Obama.
“I think it’s unfortunate that liberal leaders, whatever their ethnic background, can’t have an honest, open debate about policies that fail,” the former Speaker said Sunday. “The fact is, far more whites than blacks are on food stamps. The fact is I’ve been talking about food stamps both with regard to Speaker Pelosi and with regard to President Obama since August of 2010.”
Rep. West, the first African-American Republican elected to Congress from Florida since 1873, agrees that allegations against Gingrich in regards to the “food stamp” label are a means draw attention away from the nation’s economic duress.
“What is really appalling and disgusting and despicable is that you have people such as, unfortunately, my colleague, Mr. Clyburn, and the charlatan Al Sharpton who all of a sudden now want to create a schism and try to hide away from the fact that the unemployment rate in the African-American community is 15.8 percent,” the freshman congressman said Monday.
The Washington Times notes that in an interview on CNN over the weekend, Rep. Clyburn said he wasn’t calling Gingrich a racist, but said that the Republican candidate was using racist language.
“All of this carries certain connotations that people know very very well,” Rep. Clyburn said. “I’m saying he’s appealing to an element in the party that sees Obama as different that any of the other presidents that we’ve had.”
Mediaite captured the exchange:

It’s interesting, after the Israelites were freed from bondage they complained about being free. Meaning, they were comfortable in their complacency.. “at least we had food” they grumbled. It is amazing the effect of complacency and “comfort” has on an individual. They would rather return to it even if full fledged freedom is offered to them.

In August 2011 we learned Allen West referred his unemployed brother to see Maxine Waters at the CBC Job Fairs, where he did indeed get some offers after a full 10-hour day of interviews.
The week before, Scrappy Coco said he would be the “Harriet Tubman” to prevent Democratic “plantation owners” from using their evil social networks to maintain government slaves.
He well understands that while most food stamp recipients are white the Ronnie Reagan-bot welfare queen image of an Oprah-clone buying lobster tails and Colt 45 with Agriculture Department coupons is still a mainstay of Taxed Enough Already dog whistle politics.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 4:33amIt is a fact that more people are on food stamps then ever before. But again the elite right wing media caught blaming this president for everything. he tripled the debt, he bailed out the banks,Democrats caused the near depression. I know how you all say on right wing radio. you can’t blame GWB for long. O.k. that’s true, but you can’t blame Obama for the collapse and the reason so many people are on food stamps or unemployed. George W Bush doubled the debt while he was in office and it was unregulated banks and wall street that caused this mess. and we are on the right track fixing it. we have 2 years of growth and the unemployment rate has dropped consistently. and by the end of this year it will be below 8 percent. So blame this president for the slow recovery all you want. but history proves who grew this government and caused the “food stamp” problem not Barrack Obama.

There is around 40% of the population on food stamps, and threatening them to go hungry isn’t gonna win any votes. There are people who truly need the help, not just gaming the system. What is to become of them, starving? People are hurting and need the help, take that away and people get desperate.

Dougral Supports Israel
Posted on January 23, 2012 at 4:49pmNo one is attacking food stamp recipients. Obama is the food stamp president because he’s the poster child for creating and exacerbating poverty. Not a single one of his ideas has created so much as one wealth-creating job. He creates jobs for wealth-sucking bureaucrats to watch over the myriads of new job-killing regulations that his minions have spawned. He favors projects like the $100 billion California high-speed rail project that would be a financial albatross around California (and America’s) neck for decades. His signature achievement, Obamacare cost us untold numbers of jobs because of uncertainty of what it will cost businesses. He impedes drilling in the Gulf and has killed the oil pipeline from Canada in the face of likely Mideast chaos. Obama has done more than any other president in history to kill jobs and put people on government assistance. Thus, he is the Food Stamp President.

IMHO, the help should come from family, neighbors, community (food banks, shelters), churches/religious relief groups, then as a last resort the state and the federal government should be available for catastrophe’s and overwhelming need. If folks had to pay with the old fashioned “food stamps” and were getting assistance from their neighbors and church, most would be embarrassed and want to be self-sufficient as quickly as possible. That would lessen the load on the entire system. Donating locally puts the power back in the hands of the community.

Neither was Bush when it comes to comparing him to Obama:
Bush has expanded the welfare state and increased discretionary spending at a faster rate than any president since Lyndon Johnson. His Medicare bill alone should have disgusted enough conservatives sufficiently to refuse to vote for him. The fact that the Bush administration deliberately misled fellow Republicans in Congress about the cost of the bill — a misdeed that would have surely, and justifiably, yielded scorn and wrath from conservatives had Clinton been the perpetrator — should alone convince Americans that this administration is neither politically honest nor fiscally responsible.
Spending in Bush’s first year (FY2001) was $1.863 trillion, thus he presided over an 83-percent increase in overall federal spending, which includes defense, domestic, entitlements, and interest. Even without TARP and Fannie/Freddie, spending was up a huge 70 percent under Bush over eight years.

Newt Gingrich claims that “more people have been put on food stamps by Barack Obama than any president in American history.” He’s wrong. More were added under Bush than under Obama, according to the most recent figures.
But Gingrich goes too far to say Obama has put more on the rolls than other presidents. We asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition service for month-by-month figures going back to January 2001. And they show that under President George W. Bush the number of recipients rose by nearly 14.7 million. Nothing before comes close to that.
And under Obama, the increase so far has been 14.2 million. To be exact, the program has so far grown by 444,574 fewer recipients during Obama’s time in office than during Bush’s.
The economic downturn began in December 2007. In the 12 months before Obama was sworn in, 4.4 million were added to the rolls, triple the 1.4 million added in 2007.

This is the worst economic downturn in two generations yet Newt castigates “blacks” as being lazy and mooching off of welfare. This is the right-wing race card and its called the “Southern Strategy” (started during the Nixon Administration to attract white Southern voters). The idea is to frame blacks specifically as “lazy” and undeserving of assistance.
Nevermind that a majority of food stamp recipients are WHITE and Latino. Newt forgives the millions of whites on food stamps yet demonizes blacks because he wants to create cultural animosity towards blacks particularly. This gets him votes in South Carolina! Southern Strategy! “They” (blacks) are lazy and mooching off of welfare and steal “our” (whites) tax dollars… Racial divisiveness at its worst.

I remember him speaking about the ‘poor’ work ethic, and more people (people, not ‘black people’) being on food stamps under Obama, who happens to be a black president, but nothing about black people being singled out for being on welfare. You and other people of the media, have drawn the inference from Obama being black to the food stamp issue, and you’ve melded that into some crack-hallucination that he was specifically referencing blacks and food stamps together. With friends like you, who needs enemas? You do a great job perpetuating the race issue in America. In all honesty, if you all would just shut the hell up about it, it probably wouldn’t be a problem.

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 4:25pmBut the economic recession and high unemployment is not the African American community’s fault for the most part. Millions of people of all racial backgrounds are unemployed and looking for work. This is the worst recessionary period since the Great Depression and the meltdown occurred before Obama took office.
Obama inherited these economic conditions, yet Newt blames “blacks” specifically for their usage of food stamps, while forgiving white and Latino recipients. Most food stamp recipients are WHITE but Newt doesn’t stigmatize whites or give white recipients a cross to bear. Why?
Newt blames “blacks” specifically because he knows stereotypes about black “laziness” play well in the South. Why doesn’t Newt castigate white and Latino food stamp recipients??!! Why doesn’t Newt tell the millions of whites on food stamps to demand paychecks??!! Because he wants to race-bait and create cultural animosity towards blacks in particular! This gets him votes in especially in places like South Carolina.

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 4:32pm@ Pragmatica,
Are you a troll, or just willfully stupid? You are deliberately misinterpreting everything he said and making it about race. He mentioned black people specifically BECAUSE their unemployment rate is so much higher than other ethnic groups. Newt’s point is that they deserve better–jobs instead of food stamps–and why are they not demanding to know why Obama has not done more to address the high black unemployment rate?
He was not “blaming the blacks” for having higher unemployment, Mr. Troll, he is blaming Obama for not doing more to bring that number down. NOW who’s the “race baiter”, Mr. Troll? What is wrong with Newt targeting black voters with the message that Obama is NOT the Messiah they thought he was or expected him to be?

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 4:41pmPragmatica I missed it where blacks were specifically singled out as being the blame and the only users of food stamps. I guess for enternity Bush will blamed for the meltdown of the economy. I guess during that period having a DemoRatic congress had nothing to do with it. Just saying

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 4:41pmNewt is the one who demonized “blacks” or “African American” specifically. I am merely repeating what Newt was saying. ALL ethnic groups are experiencing high unemployment right now. This is the worst recessionary period since the Great Depression. Yet he claims that “blacks” specifically are satisfied with food stamps. The insinuation is that blacks are lazy and mooching off of welfare and stealing whites’ tax dollars. Newt is playing the race card and creating cultural resentment towards “lazy” blacks in particular. It gets him votes especially in the South. Indeed, this strategy is known as the Southern Strategy!

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 4:46pmLODGERAT: Newt is the one who singled out “blacks” specifically. He did not single out whites or Latinos or any other ethnic group. He could have talked about all food stamp recipients but Newt chose to demonize blacks as lazy and mooching off of welfare because he knows that plays well among Southern white voters. He singled out blacks for a specific reason… To create cultural resentment towards blacks and get more votes in the primary. He played the Southern Strategy like Charlie Daniels fiddle and ultimately came out victorious!

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 5:36pmHi Billy! Just stopping in to give my point of view from time to time. It’s obvious to me that Newt was ginning up racial resentment by singling out “blacks” as lazy, welfare moochers. He was obviously playing the Southern Strategy like Charlie Daniels’ fiddle. Just hoping others will see the actual reality that Newt was being very insensitive at a minimum if not outright racist!

Why are you ignoring the topic of this story, (Allen West defending the food stamp label), and trying to steer the topic of discussion to your agenda of labeling Newt as a racist.
Allen West IS black, and he agrees with the food stamp label. Yet you ignore that and dwell on your smearing of Newt.
Them there is some Alinsky tactics if I ever did see some, sho nuff.
Is Allen West a racist?

NO, Allen West is not a racist.
He is a proud black man that would like to see all blacks, and all Americans, regardless of race, prosper. As does the Republican party.
The democrat party? The party of abortion? ummmmmmmm……….not so much.

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 7:58pmBilly: I don’t think Allen West or Newt Gingrich are racist. I think West is just insensitive to actual desperation among all people and is somehow willing to defend Newt’s comments. Newt is not a racist but he is using race in divisive ways by saying that “blacks” are satisfied with food stamps.
Newt is driving a racial wedge to pit whites against blacks in order to get votes from white Southerners! Newt is not racist but he knows how to use racial stereotypes to his advantage, and it needs to be called out for what it is. Hope you can see reality one day. Love you either way. Peace for meow.

Aren’t we just lucky to have you as our vanguard against racism.
We can count on you to call it out for us, (seemingly because you feel that only you have the superior intellect needed to detect it), even when there is none to be found.
Eerily like the way MODERATIONISBEST feels it is his duty to alert us to the encroachment of that insidious theocracy that he envisions in every story that mentions religion or Christianity.
Frank Zappa claimed a theocracy was upon us, years before he died in 1993. Twenty years later, still no sign of a theocracy.

You don’t like my opinion of you. Specifically you, so you, therefore expand that to include anyone that may have the remotest chance of sharing any kind of characteristic with you. Yes, you’re right. I hate people with noses. So, anyone who hates my opinion of them, is simply a jackass, because we all know that opinions REALLY DON’T MATTER. Now go run along and play.
