Amateur Videographer Rolls as Sanitation Workers Destroy a Ford Explorer in NY

From the YouTube post:

City workers destroy a Ford Explorer trying to free a snowbound front-loader in Brooklyn Heights, New York after the storm of 2010. The crazy thing here….the vehicle WAS….wait for it….A NYC Dept of Buildings city owned vehicle. I went down, I know the owner, they are aware of the video and no police ever came. Hope that answers a lot of questions. Obviously some comments here in response are from the driver himself….read-on.

      The reason the van wasn‘t moved first is because you can’t tell by the video but NYC had over 2 feet of snow and you couldn’t move the van without plowing the street first. Now I’m not defending them, the Sanitation Dept is just a bunch of lazy idiots. Of course, you will find a few who aren’t and take pride in their job, but they are a rare breed. I live in another borough in NYC and 2 days after the blizzard and no one has seen a single plow. The Mayor is telling us to take public transportation to work, however the trains and buses aren’t running do to unplowed streets and snow on the tracks. You have to love NYC!

    I‘m not escusing the idiocy and blatant disregard for other people’s property by the inept union workers. But doesn’t NY have winter parking regulations like most other cities that get snow on a regular basis? Parking on both sides of a narrow street with a foot of snow on the ground is a recipe for disaster.

      I would assume that depends on the Neighborhood and design, in most areas where I see that there is OFF street parking (i.e drive ways, yards, etc) that can be utilized but are not ideal, in this case I do see any alternative to street parking.

      They have those regulations in Chicago, and there isn’t any offstreet parking there either. Yes it’s somewhat inconvenient for some people for two months out of the year, but it avoids issues like this completely.

      I am sure the loader operator sustained a shoulder injury,bravely struggling with poorly maintained equipment,and no power steering!! Besides it was the tow truck driver’s fault,don’t ya know. Probably sprained his ankle ,jumping such a great distance to the frozen slippery road,where he then strained his back! This hero surely deserves compensation..probably requires a couple years of PT, and retraining to a new job that makes sure ADA protects him, if not he’s certainly justified to sue for a large settlement and pension..Don’t you agree,we have a hero in service to the city here? LOL

      Sure they will, after the owner fills out 1,000,000 forms in triplicate, waits in lines and on the phone for hours and hours, and then sometime 3 years from now a check might arrived in the proper mail box, if the post office does not lose it.

    Same thing happened to my son’s car 20 years ago in Fort Wayne. Stranded, my wife went to get him at a friend’s house. On way back, they saw city tow service going way too fast wrap a vehicle into the side of his parked car going about 25 miles/hour. My wife stopped them, got the license, and for months and months, it was: “Check’s in the mail”. One day she called, the secretary said, we’re just writing the check. My wife said, stay right there I’m coming to pick it up… And she did!

      You’re right. Douchbag apartment dweller probably would have just left the loader there until the snow melted or the vehicles around it were moved. Please help us out by showing us idiots (former construction company Safety Manager here) what these skilled City workers did right in this situation. No worries at all about the damage of course — the taxpayers will pay for it!

      UOF, Give me a break, “braving the weather” a little cold and a little snow, OMG.

      The tow truck operater is the one who did not know how to do his job. He needed to have placed his truck further to his right. This wsy he could have pulled the loader away from the suv and would have also pulled it back. A little time to think about it and a little common sense goes along way.

      that city boy dweller knows more apparently, about how to move a loader than you unit of fire. And braving the weather? Are you serious? What amazes me is that in a city like New York, where snow does happen in winter time, these workers are PAID to work, and supposed to know what the heck they’re doing. Even I know this guy didn’t need a tow truck to get him out! All he needed to do is manouver with the bucket. As for tearing the back end off the truck- how about RAISING the bucket if you’re not using it to get yourself unstuck. Holy cow! Non drivers!

    That frontloader is articulating, and should never have needed a tow! The driver obviously had never driven that kind of equipment, or he’d have known how to raise the bucket at the very least! What a colossal mess!

      That is exactly what I was thinking,, the guy had NO IDEA how to operate the machine, they never needed a tow truck, I have been stuck with tractors and loaders like that and I just use the bucket to push myself back out, you can see he didn’t even try, there is a lot of power in those hydraulic cylinders, and on top of that why on earth would a guy let himself get in a position like that if he really knew how to run the machine.

      Have you ever seen the size of a front loader – especially on a city side street? Just WHERE would you suggest he turns in order to dump the load that was already in the bucket. Or maybe he should just dump it on the SUV and continue on his journey to clean the rest of the street?? With the warnings that the city had about this storm those streets should not have allowed parking in the first place. That is what garages and public parking lots are for.

      And have you ever heard of ICE under the snow? Bucket loader or not it can be VERY TRICKY!

      Agreed, we need to be prepared for situations and emergencies – that is plain common sense. I just love this, a city vehicle is totalled by city workers. The union’s finest making their usual wages for the barest amount of competence and uncaring attitudes.

      Wonder how soon they will go on strike again in protest of ‘Unsafe vehicles making for unsafe sets of working conditions” and the city leaders will cave in across the board.

      There was a video I saw one time of Garbage Trucks in NY city trying to move on the ice covered roads – skidding all over the place and crushing everything in the process. Someone had been singing with the video “I was crushing the cars one day…”

      I’ve never driven anything bigger than a horse trailer, but even I could see from the angle of the chain and both vehicles that when he pulled it would drag the loader into the car.

      And then they didn’t even stop! Just kept on goin’!

      No harm done. The parked vehicle was also owned by the city. The tab will be picked up by NYC tax payers and eventually the US taxpayer. Tax payers are rich. They still get about 40 percent of their paycheck. Besides higher taxes lead to a better economy.
