Amazing Technology: Watch an Armored Combat Vehicle Go…‘Invisible’

Earlier this month, the Blaze brought you BAE systems ADAPTIV “invisibility cloak.” Today we have learned additional details of this remarkable technology, and have some new photos to share.
As we first announced a few weeks ago, this cutting edge technology allows a vehicle to become invisible to the naked eye — as well as infrared and other radar technologies.
Even more amazing– ADAPTIV not only makes a vehicle or fixed installation disappear– it can alter itself in real time to mimic surrounding foliage, or entirely reshape its form. An Armored Personnel Carrier can shift to look like a pickup truck on radar, for example.
ADAPTIV vehicles also have the capability to electronically mark themselves to avoid friendly fire incidents.
Now, here are some of the newer photos that show what the technology looks like on the outside:
According to the description on BAE“s website, ADAPTIV works by:
“Using lightweight hexagonal pixels which are electrically powered by the vehicles systems. The pixels are individually heated and cooled using commercially available semi-conducting technology. The hand-sized pixels are made of metal, so that they can sustain physical impact and provide defence against enemy ordnance.”
As we showed you in the past, here is what you would see on infrared before a tank turns on its Adaptiv coating.
And here is what you would see, or not see, after:
Gone.
Check out the full video of ADAPTIV in action here, courtesy of BAE Systems:

Posted on September 29, 2011 at 2:45pmThis is just viewing the vehicle through thermal sights. The panels seem to insulate the vehicle thermal signature. (glass, fog, etc does this also) Show the vehicle in regular light and the IR spectrum and you will most likely see no change. Just my thoughts as a former tanker with the USMC.

Posted on September 29, 2011 at 5:11pmThis is lame
A couple years ago I saw a type of invisibility cloak that had a bunch of mini monitors on the front and the monitors would display anything behind the person wearing the cloak/suit, giving it the appearance of being invisible. I was expecting to see an improved version of what I saw. Instead it is this garbage that just cools the tank to make it invisible to infrared.

Posted on September 29, 2011 at 10:11pmActually, not so exciting,
Those are thermal images.
If they were color images or daylight images they would be much more exciting.
For thermal, all you have to do is imitate the ambient temperature you want to look like.
For instance, the trees in the back ground behind them, measure with a thermal imaging device, set the panels to same temperature & POOF! All gone! But to the naked eye, with enough light to see it, you would see it!
Only Thermal imaging sensors would be fooled.
but hey, lets give them their Yee Haw any way!

Posted on September 30, 2011 at 3:24amCan you imagine a government that would only use this for “military” purposes? We now have drones flying over the U.S. regularly. Some police departments have their own drones and ARE conducting surveillance of citizens and their property and conducting arrests based on that information. They used IR for the same thing regularly when I lived in Phoenix.
There “IS” no way this technology is NOT used for common population surveillance, eventually. Tyranny is where our destiny lies.

Posted on September 30, 2011 at 12:20pmDidn’t Clinton give away missile secrets to the Indonesians or someone through a defense contractor. That was a, not from lame stream press, scandal back in the mid 90′s I believe.
President Clinton authorized the sale to China of a Loral-made satellite sometime in February 1998. Justice Department prosecutors who were investigating the company for possible violations of export law regarding the February 1996 failed rocket launch in China opposed this.[24] Loral was eventually fined $14 million in 2002 for its involvement in illegally transferring missile technology to China.[7]
Report Post »In the end it sounded like the Company took a hit for Clinton but no one pursued it farther. Just more secrets that China is using today as it just launched its first Space Station rocket. Gads, our Politicians really suck somedays.

This article says “naked eye” but I think that’s an error. The BAE site is a bit confusing but I believe they only claim infrared. If you look at the hex pixels and read how they work (built in heater/cooler with metal on the outside) it‘s obvious it’s targeting infrared.

Posted on September 29, 2011 at 2:57pmI know Japan had developed something similar to this a while back.. I am fairly sure this is THEIR tech used for OUR application.. I may be mistaken, but I have seen an “outfit” made for troops that was developed in Japan (oddly enough in reaction to a video game… They wanted to see if they could do it, and they did..) Not sure if they sold it to us, or if we stole the idea and did our own development.. But one thing is for sure, we were not the first to make this, but we ARE the first to slap it on a piece of mobile artillery.

Posted on September 29, 2011 at 2:10pmThey’ve had invisibility technology since WW2 when Einstein did the Philadelphia experiment making a battleship disappear. There were a lot of witnesses to it at the docks where it was performed but the US government swore everyone to secrecy because we were in the middle of a war. An back then people actually liked the government so they listened. Some say the ship went to another dimension but no one really knows how he did it. You can beat you a$$ they kept working on that Technology & had it perfected by Vietnam. If you dont believe me look it up. Thats why this video is no big deal to me.
