Amazing Time-Lapse Video Shows Lake Emptied After Dam Removal

For 98 years, the 2-story hydro-power Condit Dam on White Salmon River helped power thousands of homes in the Pacific Northwest while creating a serene lake. The dam was dramatically breached Wednesday to allow an increased flow of water to restore the river to fish and other aquatic organisms, and National Geographic has posted an amazing time-lapse video of the lake’s draining:
Another video of the draining from American Rivers:
According to Indian Country, the demolition was “a happy day for tribal members, the salmon, and for the White Salmon River itself.” According to the AP, the dam removal cost around $32 million, while the improvements to the nearly century-old would have cost $100 million. Major demolition to the damn took place this week, and the rest of the dam is going to be taken down in the ensuing months. Studies that showed dam removal could be cost-effective began 14 years ago, and National Geographic reports that environmental organizations helped lead to the final moment.

You see, I am desperately trying to find someone somewhere that can prove that any of these so called gods, ghosts, or trolls under the bridge are real. The best I can find are people who “believe” for no apparent reason and which toss around silly statements like, “but but but… science cant prove there is no god, ghosts, trolls under the bridge, fairies, dragons, Luke Skywalkers.”
So please, do tell which god you believe to be real and then try to explain which version of your religion is the right one because with soooo many different versions of religions I am sure a few are very wrong if ANY are right, yet no one seems to be able to decide on which version or which religion is right. Thanks.

Woe to this wicked generation who needs signs. It takes more faith to be an atheist than a believer. You really believe in this from goo to you via the zoo crap? If man evolved from apes, why do we still have apes? Even in Jesus’ time of miracles people saw the miracles and were more interested in the show than having faith in Jesus. Mocking other’s beliefs is the lowest form of trying to win an argument rather than trying to argue your position on merits. You display an arrogance of a man who thinks that everything can be resolved with human reason alone. I might not be the most religious person but I do not mock one’s believes. Have you ever heard of a “bet” about faith? If you believe in God and he does not exist, you lose nothing. However, if you choose not to believe in HIM and HE does exist, think of ramifications of your stubborn actions and inability of conceiving something more greater than your puny existence.
Finally, from the US Constitution, if you reject God’s existence, than your inalienable rights come from the government (like your right to liberty, life, pursuit of happiness/property) at which point you are up the creek as they can be taken away from you each time a new regime takes place… Answer this question: where your humanity is coming from?

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 1:15pm@ AIKES – Science and creation continue to reveal God. The more we discover in science, the more it proves his presence. Everything has a tendency towards chaos, and an applied effort must be made to bring order. When you observe the universe, you see a trend of chaos and disorder, just as on this planet. When your mother used to tell you “your room will not clean itself”, she may as well have said “the earth and mankind will not make itself.” The reason people have difficulty explaining their faith to you is because He intended for it to be impossible. Posted on November 1, 2011 at 1:55amCONSERVATIVEMAJORITY – “Atheists make the absolute claim that there is no God.” No, atheists make the claim that based on a complete lack of empirical evidence, there is no God. From a strictly logical standpoint, it makes sense. However, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
Historically, there used to be many gods to explain thing man didn’t understand, so we had a god of the sun, god of the wind, etc. As understanding expanded, the gods fell into disuse, but there was still one question that affects all of humanity for which there were no answers: Death. Modern religion is centered around questions of what happens after we die.
Christianity has a powerful message and provides a solid framework by which to live your life, but it is entirely possible to live by Christian values without actually being a Christian. Many of the responses I see to AIKES obvious troll are extremely intolerant and many are outright ignorant (”If man evolved from apes, why do we still have apes?”) Faith is personal, folks. If it works for you, fantastic! If someone disagrees with you, you can pray for them. Isn’t that the Christian thing to do?

I don’t know anything about those indians but all of the indians I have ever lived around net, net, net, and then net some more. Some indians pull so many salmon out of the river that they cannot even give them away. Some indians leave the gill nets stretched across the Klamath River and it is surprising anything gets through. The Nez Perce use nets on poles and stand at the mouth of a narrow river and catch salmon non-stop all day long. Until all Americans go by the same rules the fisheries will never improve.

Posted on October 30, 2011 at 8:02pmTo be fair, the siltation was obviously at an extreme. The “lake” wasn’t more than a shallow wide spot. Without a large supply of water of deep water, the turbines simply will not get the energy to spin fast enough to create the electricity the dam was originally designed for. Dredging the lake would have made a larger mess, with the roads and trucks needed to haul the mud away, and any fish still would not have the means of getting above the dam.
This dam was old thought technology (dam it up, plug it in, the hell with the consequences), that has run it’s course. Better, more efficient designs in hydro-dams can now be considered on the same stretch, that won’t interfere with the natural flow of the river.

Posted on October 30, 2011 at 11:04pmThorium based molten salt reactors can power an entire home for a year with 2 grams of thorium. I takes one cubic meter of dirt on average to be able to concentrate 2 grams of usable thorium. If however, you run an iron mine, you have the natural waste product of thorium. So with thorium reactors, we could have all of our energy needs met and it would be safe, cheap, and the amount of waste created is less than one percent of that from a uranium reactor. And actually, we could start using some of the uranium reactors’ waste materials as additional fuel in the thorium reactors. Best part, if the reactors ever start to over heat, all of the molten salt and fuel melts a “freeze plug” that drains the reactor fuel into a holding tank that is passively cooled by the ground and the salt fuel mix “freezes” solid and stays in the tank until the problem can be reconciled and the reactor can be restarted by liquifying and pumping the materials back up into the reactor.
Thorium reactors are the future. I’d have them put one in my back yard if all I got in return was free power for life. Did I mention that they can be made smaller scale than a uranium reactor, one that could power an entire neighborhood would fit in the back corner of my yard. Culdesac lot of course.

Posted on October 30, 2011 at 8:00pmI don‘t understand why they just didn’t put in fish ladders to let the fish move in spite of the dam. We can not trust liberals to make decisions based on economic factors. They are too emotional to make good decisions and they have nothing but contempt for money that is not in their own pocket. Maybe the $100 million was for fish ladders but it is going to cost $32 million for dam removal plus the monetary loss of income from power production. A thousand homes at $200 per month would get you $2.4 million dollars per year in electrical income. Some eco-freak is thinking they just saved $100 million minus $32 million by blowing up the dam? Hydro is some of the cheapest power out there, so replacing it from another source means they probably paid a higher price for the replacement power and had to transmit it and endure larger line losses to get it back to the customers. In my state, we use generators even though they are producing no power to modify the power factor, thus making the cost of transmission lower. The power in the lines is allowed to spin the generators until there is a demand for more hydro power. This is called condensing. The benefit goes to everyone in the area, not just those consuming the power locally.

Posted on October 30, 2011 at 6:35pmHappy day for the Salmon? Better ask a salmon how he felt being blown to bits. This is another stupid enviromental wako project that will end in more regulations. I am sure of that. These people are relentless.
Hoover dam is probably on their hit list too.

Posted on October 30, 2011 at 8:46pmThe first of the big damns to go ( and the one the Eco Nuts are drooling over) Glen Canyon, draining Lake Powell. It may not happen soon but it will happen if the goons stay in power.

Posted on October 30, 2011 at 6:32pmHow much aquatic life was killed by that silt laden flash flood?
I bet everything down stream was killed. What wasn’t left high and dry upstream is also in a drastically changed environment.
It will be years before fish levels begin to return and salmon will have to re-learn to use this stream to spawn.
Short sighted bureacracy not understanding unintended consequences and the Native Americans getting bad advice from the eco-dummies.

Posted on October 30, 2011 at 8:47pmThat‘s what I’m thinking too. I’m watching that silt washing downstream and thinking that is going to have a Mt. St. Helen’s type of impact on everything downstream.

Posted on October 30, 2011 at 6:30pmSo are they planning on replacing the lost power with wind? The gorge has a lot of wind and there are huge, bird and bat killing wind turbines there. I believe each one of those turbines kills about 400,000 animals/year. Always there are unintended consequences. If anyone knows, I’d appreciate the information.

Posted on October 30, 2011 at 6:27pmone more successful implementation of the UN policy
just like the flooding of the mississippi was intentional because of people refusing to use the dams for the reason they are there ……………flood control
they could have prevented much of the flooding if they had released water from these dams instead of keeping them full which would have allowed for the slow release of the extra water when the mississippi flooded
instead when we got all that rain, those dams were already , and intentionally at full capacity
this is just another step in the movement to return all our rivers to their original water beds …………this movement has been trying to grow stronger for quite some time , and is promoted by groups that believe we should stop advancing and growing our power sources

Posted on October 30, 2011 at 8:32pmSounds like you‘re familiar with the UN’s Agenda 21. This is exactly what I thought when I read that they were going to be destroying this hydro plant. They have plans that will take our freedoms, our land, our food and put us in living(?) centers which right now are being called “sustainable developments”. Sound familiar? Is your community being sucked in by the green, sustainable monster? Yes, the UN wants the land reverted back to what it was before Columbus arrived. Everyone should do a search of Agenda 21 and ICLEI. Do it before it’s too late.

Report Post »JohnHW
Posted on October 30, 2011 at 6:22pmDidn’t Obama stated during his election bid that the cost of electric power was necessarily going through the roof. Well, here is the first one. Now, they are going after coal. Then nucleur power. So, if you don’t have wind or solar power, don’t expect to have electricity.
This is just the first.

Posted on October 30, 2011 at 8:25pmDon’t you mean, well, dam?!
Had a tough time choking down that whole paragraph…
According to the AP, the dam removal cost around $32 million, while the improvements to the nearly century-old (century-old what?) would have cost $100 million. Major demolition to the damn (or is it dam?) took place this week, and the rest of the dam (or is it damn?) is going to be taken down in the ensuing months.

Dam it all, do we now put them on dam unemployment for 200 dam weeks, or is this the start of the “occupy the damn dam!”movement. Tree huggers unite, the river runs free and the electricity runs effin HIGH!!!
