Amazing Video: Deaf Woman Hears Herself Speak for the First Time

Sarah Churman was born deaf. At 29 years old, she had never heard the sound of her own voice until she received a hearing implant two months ago. Watch her incredible reaction when the device is activated and she hears herself for the first time:

“I had an implant put in 8 weeks ago called The Esteem Implant by Envoy Medical,” Churman wrote on her YouTube channel. “I was born deaf and have worn hearing aids from the age of 2, but hearing aids only help so much. I have gotten by this long in life by reading lips. This was taken as they were activating the implant.”

In the video, shot by her husband, Churman laughs and claps her hand to her mouth when the device is turned on. She covers her face and cries, overcome by emotion.

Churman said she’s been complimented her whole life on how well she speaks.

“I don’t really have an answer for you other than I have always had a passion for reading, grammar, and English,” she wrote. “My hearing loss was/is considered severe to profound. I’ve worked very hard to be able to interact and blend in…only thing I can say is ‘God is good.’”

      The story is a hoax. Though it is grand she can hear again…she has obviously spent most of her life being able to hear.

      Someone who has been deaf all of their life, would not be able to speak perfectly understandable english (or any other language), as this young lady does upon hearing “for the first time.”

      You have trouble reading don’t you? She’s been using hearing aids since she was 2. She is legally deaf, not totally deaf. In other words, the equipment to hear is there, but BARELY works.

      Please educate yourself and learn what the definitions of being deaf are before you call this woman’s plight and miracle a hoax.

      The word of the technological breakthrough of Esteem gets out more. More people become aware of it. More people get helped. Glenn makes a little scratch because he helps get the word out.

      Who cares? What difference does it make to you? Is your money being magically sucked out of your wallet by this story? Nope. Is your life being negatively impacted by this story or the company of Esteem? Nope. So why don’t you piss and moan about something that actually matters? I think it’s because you just not happy unless you are diminishing somebody else. Kinda sad. Just go to Starbucks and get yourself a nice Chi Tea, mello out and enjoy your day.

      In order for the implant to work as the company has said you must have SOME hearing.
      Please do just a little bit of research before you accuse people of lying. Especially about things like this.
      My wife and I have worked with the deaf and blind just about all our lives and know well how the different levels of “deafness” affect their speech. There does not appear to be anything out of order here.
      I praise God that this kind of thing is available to people. As should you sir/madam.

      Hopefully Esteems new Anti-moron implant will be in soon for your to test for them. Sadly since it requires the person to have a little sense, it may not work for you like the hearing aid worked for the lady.

      My son, now 27-years old, has been profoundly deaf since birth and this story sounds like a stretch to me as well. I’ve been around deaf friends and others since he was born and something is not right with this picture. If someone has been deaf all of their life there is no way they could speak that well — no way. My son wears hearing aids and while his speech is good enough to tell what he‘s saying it would not be anywhere near as good as what the gal’s speech in the video. Not buying it unless her “deafness” was very, very mild. Something is very wierd with this article.

      Well put Conservativecharlie! We celebrate her restored hearing with her. Sometimes man has a moment of compassion and genuinely loves other people. I don‘t understand how the left and the libs have taken over this woman’s celebration to turn this celebration into the perversions of gay’s and transgenderism. How sick our society is, that this major event for this woman can be turned into a discussion of someone’s sick perversion instead. May God Bless this woman as she continues to hear using this implant, no matter who makes it, or who makes money from the advertisement. People need to rejoice with this woman and keep their other thoughts to themselves – other thoughts are misguided and indeed misplaced in this article.

      You need to observe actress Deanne Bray (“Sue Thomas”, “Heroes”). She was born profoundly deaf (no hearing whatsoever). Unless you are familiar with the “accent” that people with a hearing impairment have (lack of full inflection), you would never know it. She is absolutely fantastic as an actress.

      I grew up twenty miles from the Clarke School for the Deaf, and two of my neighbor’s kids across the street attended there. It is very possible, and rather common for profoundly deaf people to learn to speak quite clearly. Helen Keller did pretty well for herself, too, despite being robbed of her sight and hearing at a very young age. Maybe there’s hope for The_Almighty_Creestof to learn how to be more open-minded as well.

    I am so happy for her. This is how transgender people react when they wake up from thier surgury too. Its amazing that God made her deaf and yet doctors using modern technology gave her the ability to hear. When transgender people have sugury people say that they are defying God for doing it and sinning. God made her deaf and he also made transgender people.       Because transgender, gay, etc don’t fit into their elitist religious world view. They believe themselves better than others and feel the need to point it out as often as possible.

      But, you are absolutely right. This is a wonderful miracle of science and medicine that allow this girl to enjoy life to its fullest. While she was born deaf, she can now experience laughter and music to the fullest.

      Some of the people on this site would do well to actually sit and reflect inwards on this. She was born deaf…thusly created by god this way in your beliefs. Now we’ve defied that by science. Obviously, no self-proclaimed Christian is going to say this is wrong. They’ll say how beautiful and wonderful this is. But why not the same reaction to homosexuals, transgenders, etc? God made them that way as well and the same Christians on this site will praise this miracle of science while calling others disgusting and a defamation to god.

      Please, for the love of god, reflect upon the way you treat others. Learn to respect others who disagree with what you believe. Allow your god to judge others as he is supposed to and stay out of it, just like you are supposed to.

      That is an interesting argument, I may have to chew on it for a bit.
      At first blush, I would say that God gave (nearly) all of us 5 senses with which to work.
      He also gave us the genetic, hormonal programming to determine our sex. That, to me, is a “global” program, as opposed to one “faulty” sense.

      How the hell did your conversation go from a “partially” deaf girl to transgenders? You are mixing Apple and Oranges and trying to make it look like they are the same. They are not. The deaf girl did not choose to be deaf, transgender is a choice. Chaz Bono is a prime example: born a female, chose to turn male. That is all I will say about the subject.

      It is truly wonderful that science has given this child the ability to hear better and yes I do equate myself as a follower of Christ. It is obvious from her speech that she was not totally deaf as she does not have the speech traits usually accompaning deafness.

      yeah and why have I been born with an incredible urge to use drugs and alcohol. I mean, to an extent that to use again would mean going to jail, but still can’t stop myself. I was born with a genetic disposition that was obviously exposed to the negative environmental factors that lead to me being an addict/alcoholic. I had to change everything about me in order to recover and stay sober. WHy can’t this be the case with homosexuals or transgenders ?? Then why is it not politically correct to suggest maybe they shouldn’t be humping the same sex or have parts changed on their body and should try therapy or go through a psychological process that changes their entire psychological disposition. I am just saying. I don‘t say that is right but I do say that it isn’t right not to suggest that maybe if you can’t create a baby then maybe there is something wrong with how you identify love. I understand the same sex creates attraction, just as I loved getting high. If there wasn’t certain consequences, I may not have every quit/. Just wasted away a junky. The foundation of addiction is self centered selfishness, which keeps one from realizing how they are destroying their loved one and family. Can I justify getting high by saying screw the world, its your problem not mine ?? What about when I have to go to jail as a result of my actions using .. DO you get what I am saying ?? MAybe you can’t, not being a recovering addict.

      The thing I don‘t get about sex change surgery is you aren’t really the new sex .A man changed into a woman can’t give birth,a woman changed into a man can’t produce sperm.Sex organs are what determine our sex.If I‘m a man and say I’m a woman does that make me a woman?Transgender seems to be a pc thing that I just don’t get.It is awesome this girl has had her hearing improved!

      The difference is this. The ear was made for hearing, this is restoring the part of the body to what it was designed to do. It is a healing. Our bodies are a gift from God and are intergral to who we are. God made them male and female. If you were given the gift of a male body or a female body it is part of God’s plan for you. If you are not in unison with your body there is a disorder there. It could be that you have an extra chromosone, or did not get the testosterone push when needed to develop prorperly, or you could have been born with both sets of genitalia. I would have a problem with those people choosing a sex to be. What I have problems with are people loathing the body that they were given, and cutting and mutilating the gift that they were given.
      I actually have great empathy for such people, because no one comes into this world, so self-loathing. They picked up some very strong rejection or even abuse along the way. The healing that is needed is one the inside, These sex-change surgeries just match the out er mulitation to match the inner mutilation.
      To me all healing begins and ends with God. We all have inner conflicts that drive us to our knees and keep us humble before God. If you feel this conflict inside, I would spend a lot of time before God asking HIm why did you make me thus. It may be that He has destined you to do great things, and this thorn was meant to keep you humble. Temptation is not sin. All are tempted differently.

    My late husband had a progressive hearing loss and my heart used to hurt for him. He loved being around people but missed conversations if there were too many talking at the same time.

    I am so thrilled for this young woman. I hope the company that produced the product that gave her the ability to hear will prosper so many others can benefit from their efforts.

      Glenn gave an update a couple of months later on his radio show. Apparently he had to be over 12 years old before he could get that Esteem implant. So in the meantime, Glenn was going to see to it that he got the very best hearing aid available. There is no one more generous and kind than Glenn Beck. My own granddaughter was born profoundly deaf 3 1/2 years ago and with the balance bone missing (a bridge between the ear drum & cochlea) she would not have been a candidate for the Esteem implant. Even so… God is GOOD! Just watching that little one jive to music makes ‘my eyes sweat’, too! :)

      You are correct, Jessieh. Obamacare will not pay for procedures like this. But Obamacare is going to be found unconstitutional and tossed to the curb anyway, and we’ll have more responsible people working on healthcare reform. It‘s not the government’s job to provide such services.

      Your point is absurd. I have heard no one argue that we should not provide any quality of life enhancing healthcare support through government for people with disabilities. This is a touching video and I would love for my hard earned money to help provide moments like this for good people. If you are healthy and able bodied, work hard and buy your own damn health insurance or accept the consequences if you don’t. I am not your mommy and I am doing all I can to see that my government is no longer your mommy either.

      Government does not pay for this procedure nor do insurance companies cover it, as I understand it. This is ‘elective surgery’, is quite successful and costs in the neighborhood of $30,000. It is not a ‘hoax’ as some moron suggested earlier.

    Wow! For having had profound hearing loss since birth her speech is wonderful! She must be a hard worker, that takes a lot of dedication to keep speech that clear. Good for her!!!

      My niece is deaf. I wonder how this would work for her. Her hearing loss is profound. My sister chose have her learn ASL. It’s a sad thing, but the deaf community treat those who get hearing implants as almost traitors. It’s something I hate about the “deaf culture” but it’s very hard to talk about it to them.

      Really guys? I hate the prevalence of tattoos as well, but the old Law is dead. Didn’t you get the memo? It came out of the Council of Jerusalem. Only the sexual morality of the law and the bit about not eating strangled meat in prescribed.

      Besides, try a little Grace now and then. It will make you look less like a**holes.

      @Yiddishlion…..I am sure that she didn’t tattoo herself for the sake of anyone dead. The scripture is referring to Pagan societies that cut/marked themselves as a form of worship. As a Disciple of JESUS who has quite a few tattoo’s (All Chist centered tat’s) I find that anti-tattoo defense a little silly.

      I like you believe that tattoos are wrong…however just like some others that have posted about this story you do not know this girl. By your post I assume you are a Christian or Jewish. Either way can you point out one just ONE person who has EVER come to God with nothing in their past they regret? Do you think that God is going to reject her because of a little ink? Does God want us to operate out of a spirit of grace or judgement? Call sin what it is …sin but remember your own before you came to faith in Christ or if Jewish the sin you now bear until you bring your sin offering to the priest.
