‘America Is Better Than Glenn Beck’: College Textbook Includes Anti-Beck Writings

“Today’s Tea Party adherents are George Wallace legacies.”

“[Glenn] Beck is an ignorant, divisive, pathetic figure.”

If those sentences sound to you like they’re straight out of the op-ed pages of the Washington Post and the New York Times, you’d be right. But they can also be found in a college textbook assigned to students at a community college in Texas.

America Is Better Than Glenn Beck: Anti Beck Writings in College Textbook“Read, Reason, Write: An Argument Text and Reader” is a critical reading and analysis book assigned to freshmen at Lone Star College-University Park in Houston. Its 10th edition features a collection of readings excoriating Beck and the Tea Party, while providing only the barest counter point of view.

The two sentences above came from op-ed pieces in the Post and Times that were reprinted in the book’s 23rd chapter: “America: Embracing the Future — or Divided by Conflict?” The line about the Tea Party is from Post columnist Colbert I. King’s March 2010 piece, “In the faces of Tea Party shouters, images of hate and history”, while the line about Beck comes from the Times‘ Bob Herbert’s “America Is Better Than This,” published in August 2010.

King compares the Tea Party to the protesters who stood to block the Little Rock Nine in 1957 and those who cheered ex-Klansman David Duke at a rally in 1991. He describes Tea Party members picketing on Capitol Hill during the health care debate and says they’re the legacy of George Wallace, the former Alabama governor who famously declared: “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever”:

They see the world through the eyes of the anti-civil rights alumni. “Washington, D.C.” now, as then, is regarded as the Great Satan. This is the place that created the civil rights laws that were shoved down their throats. This is the birthplace of their much-feared “Big Government” and the playground of the “elite national news media.”

In “America Is Better Than This” — published on the eve of Beck’s Restoring Honor event in Washington, D.C. — Herbert says there is “no road too low for [Beck] to slither upon.”

He is an integral part of the vicious effort by the Tea Party and other elements of the right wing to portray Mr. Obama as somehow alien, a strange figure who is separate and apart from — outside of — ordinary American life.

The book, first brought to The Blaze’s attention by a professor at the college, does feature an article by Arthur C. Brooks, president of the conservative American Enterprise Institute. Brooks’ 2010 piece, “America’s new culture war: Free enterprise vs. government control,” is the only reading in the chapter that can be said to offer any real counterpoint, and it’s limited to one paragraph:

“And while some have tried to dismiss the ‘Tea Party’ demonstrations and the town hall protests of last summer as the work of extremists, ignorant backwoodsmen or agents of the health care industry, these movements reveal much about the culture war that is underway.”

Vicki Cassidy, a spokeswoman for the Lone Star College System, told The Blaze two faculty members at University Park use the book, but said the chapter in question is not assigned and the readings — part of a supplementary section — are not part of the syllabus. Other chapters in the supplementary section deal with the environment (Chapter 17: “How Do We Cope With Climate Change”) and marriage (Chapter 19: “Marriage and Gender Issues: The Debates Continue”)

Cassidy said the book was first adopted in 2006 before it contained the readings in question. Textbooks are selected by a faculty committee that does not typically re-examine subsequent editions of previously adopted material.

She confirmed the book’s current edition was not re-examined before it was assigned to students. The committee may opt to revisit its material this summer, she said.

Of the two faculty members who teach out of the book, Cassidy did not immediately know how many classes it has been assigned to. She also did not immediately know whether the book is assigned at other colleges within the Lone Star College system.

exactly College is where student are taught what to think not how to think. Liberal runners of the 21st century planbtation are no better than the 18th st plantation owners. They don’t want smart slaves. The 18th century plantation master would let the slaves learn to read or write. And the 21st century slave owners don’t want their slaves to think. same game it’s always been and they wonder why our education system is so stagnant. Becasue liberal idea are inbredded over and over again an forced onto the kids desperate for a good grade and stupid enough to believe it.

One of my sons got sent to the office because he questioned the teacher and told her she was wrong. After meeting with the principal it was proven with facts that my son was correct – no supension.

      @texas
You wouldn’t be making overarching generalizations of a whole group based on the comments of one or a few ignorant people would you? Is there anyway for you to prove that “all the comments” aren’t coming from one person with an agenda and multiple accounts/screen names? If you see what you think is an injustice, call people out on it. Your voice is allowed to be heard (read) here. With that being said, two wrongs usually don’t make a right. I’m not so sure a good counter-point to “the authors in the book made false generalizations” is “you guys make false generalizations too.” Just a thought,

One thing is clear from the posts. Few here ever went to college. In a “critical reading and analysis” class, you read opinion articles, learn different ways, logical or illogical, that authors use to make their points, learn to identify weak or strong arguments, arguments that depend on emotion rather than logic and so forth.

The point of classes such as these is not to teach opinions, something that seemingly every person here missed (not surprised). The point is to develop critical thinking skills. If anything the kids are learning to point out where the opinion pieces are weak. Again, this is a “critical thinking” class, something few here have ever taken, as if I didn’t know that already.

@SanDiegoSteve…I was 59 when I finished my third degree and I noticed the same thing as you. College certainly isn’t what it used to be. They tell students how to think rather than giving them facts and allowing them to think for themselves.

Colleges use the term ‘critical thinking’ when what they really mean is ‘it’s critical to think just like the professor.’ In order to survive, yet be true to myself, all of my papers included two ways of looking at things. When you’re able to argue both sides of the story … THEN you’ve mastered critical thinking.

I think most students formulate their beliefs by talking to other students before and after class. I rarely met a student who gave two cents worth of credit to the professor’s point of view. However, the professors to fear the most are those who ‘befriend’ their students.

@CWP~ Do you think you could sneek in recording equipment to record their vile rhetoric? Maybe you could record a whole series of recordings and get them to Glenn and/or the Dean of your school.
This would show everyone what is happening to our kids and people could start taking their kids out of college and they would have to close down. Unless odumba got re-elected (which I doubt) then the would get “bailed out”.

My daughter had to learn to be quiet and write her papers based on what the profs wanted, not what was true. She is the daughter of a Navy MMCM,(dec), a sister to a retired Marine, cousin to a retired Seal, cousin to a former Army Ranger (West Point grad), mother to a Marine, with two more sons planning military careers. (she graduated at age 39) She said the toughest thing she ever did was listen to ignorant profs talk total trash about military, and our country. Fortunately she had a mom to vent to. Happiest day for her was graduating and being able to speak her mind to a few of them-politely of course. Glenn is the watchman on the tower, you can always find sanity by hearing him put the pieces together to fight back. Good luck in school, fight the good fight!

WOW … now that’s disturbing. I’m not sure I could put up with that nonsense. I live in a conservative state, so my professors would never be so bold. There was once a time, when an ignorant professor would say something like that and be fired. Hopefully you have conservative friends to talk to after being abused by such verbal garbage.

Well when he goes to Egypt and bows to the Muslims and he distinctly remembers the call to prayer and KNOWS how to sing it and at one point in his early life he was a Muslim? I don’t know, one could think he still might have some roots in the religion. So in essence those Christians as you put it, some might believe he is not a full Christian. The fact that he is with Jim Wallis tells me he is not a true Christian. PS. There is a Muslim sect that follows Christianity teachings and do not use the Koran. Read up buddy.

Whether he is a full Muslim remains to be seen, whether he is a true Christian remains to be seen. This juror is still out.

We can ALL agree that people like this should be silenced and the Govt. should have a hand in what is deemed “Acceptable” for our nations airways. We can ALL agree that people like this are just wrongheaded and stuborn, and will never go along with what we ALL agree on.

Now, in that paragraph, notice the tactic “We ALL Agree”, this is what the left does to get the more timid and non-thinkers to go along with their point of veiw, after all, you don’t want to be the oddball. Plus, throw in baseless “Facts” and inuendo. When the person being attacked tries to set the record straight, they just answer “See, this is exatcly what we said he would do,” and then attack him as trying to cover his lies.

The bad thing about this & many other topics, are the people who read the first line of an article & swear by the story without reading further.
Look at the number of things Beck has wrote about, had radio & TV shows about while having so many of obama & clan’s party donothing but claim Beck is a looney, fear monger & or worst. Then when the stories prove to be true & actually take place, Beck is not the one praised for connecting the dots well in advance, it is the media that only then writes a headline for their ratings that get the credit. How ignorant is this each time it happens? And it is not once or twice this has happened, I cannot count the times it does. And yet Beck is still the evil one..
Try explaining this to people, show the actual facts, it goes in one ear & out the other.
There is no other country as great as America & once America as we know it is gone, what then? When there is no more free to be had what then? Civil unrest in our communities with more blaming the rich & Becks of this country for not doing more to protect them..
This dumbing down of America that has been taking place for over 30 years that I recall is so evident & many believe it until the time they can do something about it & then they point fingers instead of doing their part.
More people need to wake up & understand the larger picture. Nothing is free!!!

My suggestion is to “kill them with kindness.” I urge all Tea Party members and groups to set up community outreach programs where food and VOLUNTEER PARTICIPATION are given in low income areas at soup kitchens and food banks. The “donate a bag of groceries” idea was fantastic. Proudly wear your TEA Party shirts and hats while helping. I’m tired of this narrative being portrayed. If you’re a TEA party member and you own a small business in the community, set up a temporary work program one weekend a month where anyone willing to work can come in and work for a Saturday or Sunday for $10/hr. Show that the TEA Party is for everyone. Help those that can‘t help themselves at retirement homes and don’t just give money to wounded troops, but help them or their families by going to the store or doing yard work. A really good idea is to set up “building parties” for Habitat for Humanity three or four times a year. Get 12-50 TEA Party members together and go build houses for the impoverished. It’s one thing to say, “were not the way you describe” and another to actually prove them wrong. I know they’re wrong, you know they’re wrong, but they don‘t know they’re wrong. Prove it to them. Actions will suffocate the empty words of their narrative.

If your child wants to be a Communist, send him or her to cuba or venezuela or russia with a one-way ticket and no money or credit cards or i anythings……

As a matter of fact, taking back control of our families would be a good thing. Have a lock-down this weekend and shut off all i everythings. Spend some quality time with each other. No phones. No texting. Just being.
