American Gun Ownership at Highest Level in Almost 20 Years

A new Gallup poll of self-reported gun ownership shows that 47% of American adults have a firearm somewhere in their household, which is the highest the number has been since 1993.

The new data comes from Gallup’s October 6-9th crime poll. Below are the charted results of gun ownership by year:American Gun Ownership at Highest Level in Almost 20 Years

Public support for gun rights is also at a peak, according to Gallop. And Republicans are of course more likely to own a firearm than democrats, by a margin of 55% to 42%. But even Democrat gun ownership has spiked to 40%, it highest level in eight years.

      We have bought several guns aand thousands of rounds recently. The enemy is at the gate and they have told their intentions. 10 years ago i never would have guessed we would be buying guns to fend off a communist revolution. The good thing is i had 4 years of Infantry training , unlike the Communists that are thugs and need numbers. I hope very much it doesn’t come down to that, but i see a possibility. Many neigbors of mine, all middle class are doing the same. We see the press, democrats and government campaigning against us. I was looking for the video Glenn had on show of van Jones celebrating the attack of 9/11. On this site i just searched van Jones and the history of this movement goes back about a year. He isn’t hiding their views. we are ready.

      November 9, 2:00 pm EST. That’s when communications – phone, TV, internet and radio – will be shut down by the US government, they say for 20 minutes at longest. That’s what they say. But others who are in a position to know are saying that this is the “hidden in plain sight” moment where Obama will declare Marshall Law. Extra activitity has been seen at military bases, and fighter jets have been seen flying low in training runs. I’m stocking up this weekend with additional food, water and ammo and I recommend you do the same.

      Interestingly, because of a list I’m on, I received an email telling me that two hours before I’ll be asked to report to a location (that I will be informed of just minutes before noon), to help with “logistics.” That’s all it said. I‘m not sure what they’re thinking or who they think I am, but I’m not helping the government with no logistics. I’d like to see them try to make me!

      In any case, the day and the hour are set. Now all we can do is wait.

      … a better question might be ‘How MANY guns do you have in your home or property?‘ I know since OBAMMY was elected I’ve purchased four more weapons in caliber‘s I’ve always wanted to own. I don’t want to say how many guns I have, but it’s a bunch, and they’re all locked up in a Liberty Safe!

      Obama’s friends frightened us when we realized who they are and their intent. Obama miscalculated by thinking he could push legislation through faster than Americans could react in purchasing more guns. Local progressives tried to limit gun ownership at the same time, but in reaction, more conservative local office holders (such as sheriffs) were elected, effectively blocking those efforts.

      @The_Almighty_Creestof. I bet those numbers are far higher. No one can possibly know how many guns are out there. The mere fact that they can produce these numbers, is scary. I see the Dem commies are arming themselves at a higher rate than regular Americans since Obama has been in office. Fortunately recently retired military are regular Americans, unlike vets from Vietnam when we had the draft. Make sure you buy your guns privately and never ever get a concealed weapons permit. These commies will know where to find you if you do. The commies are coming. The commies are coming. I don’t think that we can avert civil war. There is only one way to negotiate with commies.

      47% of households have guns, but what segment of the population does this consider?

      That percentage will increase to probably about 99% for people in rural areas; probably about 75% for people living in outlying suburban areas; and 60% for those living in the suburbs close to town.

      I imagine the lowest percentage of gun owners will be wealthy leftists in the gated communities or those living in upscale neighborhoods in areas of the country that are known leftist enclaves. Yes, I know the left wing gun banners are the biggest hypocrites, with an assault rifle stashed somewhere, but, for the most part, they also comprise the largest percentage of those who are unarmed.

      Fortunately, it is the red areas of the country that are the most heavily armed and are far more apt to be prepared for hard, brutal times than most all the blue areas.

      There are many guns in the urban areas also, but they’re mostly handguns that are of little value for combat at a distance of more than 50 yards, and few shotguns and rifles.

      I don’t think many people realize the overpowering strength, militarily, of those on the right. That won’t change in the foreseeable future either.

Oh yea, our economy is better than yours and pretty well all other metrics as well.       Actually, our infant mortality is lower tha yours, our life expectancy s higher than yours and our overall satisfaction with our medical sytem is way higher but keep living in your make believe world.       Got bad news folk‘s if it’s true. I have heard a rumor that Soros if buying or trying to buy up the gun companies. I hope maybe The Blaze might look into this, I for one would like to know if it’s true. If it’s true and he can pull if off, we’ll be hurting even more for weapons and ammo. FYI here in CA as of the first of this coming year we will have to register long gun‘s same as hand gun’s, along with about a dozen other gun laws aimed at removing our 2nd amendment rights. But there are pocket’s of sanity even here in the Socialist state of CA. Keep up the good fight and keep your powder dry.

      @ Tim Law — I read an article a week ago about an organization that was buying gun & ammo companies. It even had the list of company names. The person or persons that wrote the article had shown the link between soros & this particular company. I’m not 100% sure but, I think it was one of the 2nd ammend. or gun owners rights organizations like NAGR or RKBA or maybe even NRA. I’ll look around for it & post the link if I can find the damn thing. I recall some of the names like Marlin Winchester and so on. About 12 to 15 or so.

      Don’t automatically assume that the police, National Guard, etc. will follow ILLEGAL orders to conficate all privately owned fire arms.

      Then again, if “they” can’t find them, they can’t take them, can they. Plenty of clever places to hide a fire arm where only the one that hid it can find it.

      A possibility that Socialist/Marxist Obama may not have considered, . . . How many Americans will willingly give up their fire arms to a growing tyranical government? Any attempt to confiscate personal fire arms could well spark a Second American Revolution.       Cessna 152 – Obumbler has already said that he will only enforce the laws he likes. Look at Fast and
      Furious, when his statment that the guns in Mexico came from the US and is was shown that he was wrong, BATFE started selling guns to Mexico to bring up the stats. Fast and Furious was supposed to give them an excuse for taking our guns or at least restricting ownership.

      I buy all my guns from private owners at the entrance to the gun shows. Never even a first name swapped. Also 22 caliber is great for stocking up for a fire fight with the communist deer at $18.00 for 550 rounds at Walmart. I have a 30 06 with a scope for the communist deer who are at a distance. We will not go communist without a fight and we will win. The more aggravated we get the more likely we will win. If they could keep chipping away at our freedoms they might win in a hundred years or so but an outright assault will result in a worldwide annihilation of the liberal communists perverts and baby killers.       PC B D, your 22 is a very weak defense against the gov’t 223, 40 cal, 9mm and 308 and other standard antipersonnel firearms that will arrive at your door.

      Like a lot of other citizens I have a safe full of various calibers. Unlike most I also reload and cast for most of those calibers.

      I am still dependent on the ATF controlled marketplace for powder though. Expect that to dry up REAL fast so keep some extra on hand.

      I feel bad for the lady and her husband with CCW. I know they were just trying to obey the law, but they need to understand how liberals work.       Dont underestimate the effectiveness of a .22 long round. Ruger has manufactured millions of the model 10 22 rifle since the mid ’60s. They are very reliable, very accurate and have hundreds of after market accessories available. You can get a 500 round box for under 30 bucks. Couple that with a few 50 round clips and you have some serious harassing fire. I wouldnt recommend anyone try to go up against a 308 or 223 aasault rifle with one but when it comes to shotguns and handguns at a distance of 100 yards you will have a definite advantage over those.

      I hope they are not all of different calibers. The old days of collecting different makes, models, calibers, etc are gone. Focus on what you need and can support. Fielding a different caliber is extremely expensive once you realize you will need to resupply yourself once this goes down. Stick to common cartridges that can fulfill specific missions, i.e. .45acp for defense with solid knockdown power and wide spread availability, 5.56mm for obvious reasons, 12ga. etc. Other more exotic calibers are fun to collect and shoot and I have enjoyed it all my life but now I only focus on the primary mission cartridges. Think more about what you need and less about what you want.

      Actually it is the second graph .. 55% are Republicans .. what is telling is the increase of Democrats look at the second line on that graph .. 40% and growing FASTER than the Republicans. Looks like it is not just Republicans that are afraid of the current regime.

      Actually, CATB, the thing you don’t seem to be considering is that the left is arming themselves in anticipation for a fight with the right. If you’d have been to some of the leftist and anarchist sites I have in the past couple years, you’d have found much chatter to that effect – they need to arm and train because the right is armed and trained, and they know they’ll lose if things go that way, which is what many of the fringe left WANT to happen.

      Not so much. The occuposers are in Phoenix and Austin where you can bypass security into the capitol building itself with your TX CHL. The occuposers are 12 blocks away at city hall. So far they are behaving in Austin.

      Don’t be gullible! If you get a call asking about gun ownership, say “Absolutely NOT!” and hang up.

      Homeland Security and the ATF would like to collect all the unauthorized guns owned by unregistered users and put them in a big pile and run over them with a bulldozer. An unarmed populace is much easier to herd like stupid sheep.

      Some gun owners support the US Constitution, obey the laws, support Ron Paul, have a Tea Party bumper sticker, belong to a Christian church or just want to protect themselves. All these people are potential domestic terrorists.

      The Justice Department and the ATF sell military-style weapons to people who really need them, namely the Mexican Drug Cartels. The revolution can begin when Obama arms FEMA, ACORN, CAIR, the “Civilian Peace Corps” and the “American Spring Revolt”.

    The best part of this, is that those gun owners are also more trained and willing and able to use those firearms to defend and protect their families. It is an inalienable right to bear arms….what is it about that, they don’t understand? The more the Obama regime sees these types of polls, the more they have to seriously consider what anti-gun legislation they want to propose. It will come to the point that “anti-gun” legislation will be career suicide for any politician wanting to be re-elected. Either that, or Obama’s hands will be covered in blood. AG Holder can’t possibly be that stupid….oh wait on second thought…..

      Want to buy decent ammo for a decent price….go to CA. Walmart is always stocked up in my neighborhood. Been buying boatloads of .223 and 9mm and they don’t even check I.D.

      In some cases the ammo is cheaper by the box than it is by the bulk.

      Southern California and Oakland will be likely targets for the “race” riots in the Spring and Summer. The drug dealers and gang bangers will be outraged when someone is shot by the police while stealing food and beer from a Korean-owned convenience store. The rioters and looters should be well-equipped with discount ammo from WalMart. California won’t be able to pay for the National Guard so Obama will transfer troops from Afghanistan and Iraq to protect the starving looters from ordinary citizens trying to protect their property.

    I can understand this. But from what I’m seeing in our rural lands, they attacking our private property rights, fishing, and hunting rights as fast as they can. Taking private property without eminent domain, literally fining them with exorbitant fines to financially break the landowner for their land grab. We’re seeing it all over rural areas in our nation. My guess, those who are the salt-of-the-earth need to be neutralized. I hear Glenn say buy land with water on it. Doesn’t do you any good if the feds give you a 100-300 ft offset on your own land away from your own water, or the feds decide to remove dams that will flood a whole farm and ranch area like they intend to do in Siskiyou County, CA. It’s all the wildlands project, removing the people who cling to their Bibles and the guns and placing them were they can control them.

    Gun ownership high during the Clinton years, drops off when Bush was in office and now goes up again since Obama. Republicans own the most guns. Naw I don’t see any trend here.

    I hope the looney left takes heed in these stats before they think they will steal from their neighbors. Don’t bring a knife to a gun fight.

      I think you are absolutely correct in assessing the trend…but what reason is there for the partisan effect? I imagine that there is probably a lot of fear mongering. People are probably not afraid of crime to a greater degree, but are afraid the government will criminalize some forms of gun ownership. Since democrats have always been more likely to prohibit guns, it makes sense that people will buy them when democrats take office.
      With that being said, it would make a lot of sense for gun manufacturers to support a democratic candidate for the presidency. It is sure to improve sales. I’d be interested to know if gun makers contribute to campaigns and which party they support.

      I don’t think fear has a party affiliation. When libs think the government is going to censor a video game or movie, they rush out to see it. When criminalizing abortion is threatened, they run out and flush it. I seem to remember a lot of liberals claiming they were going to move to canada or europe if Bush won the election, and regardless of party, a lot of people put tin foil on their windows when they found anthrax in the mail. Scare tactics sell my friend, and there is no greater purveyor of fear than the media.

      It is a fact that Obama is all in for gun control laws. Here are some examples.

      FactCheck: Yes, Obama endorsed Illinois handgun ban

      Obama said its Ok for states & cities to determine local gun laws

      Obama said “They cling to guns or religion”

      Obama Voted NO on prohibiting lawsuits against gun manufacturers.

      Principles that Obama supports on gun issues:
      Ban the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic weapons.
      Increase state restrictions on the purchase and possession of firearms.

      In March 2004, the Illinois Senate passed Senate Bill 2165, with provisions designed to assert a right of citizens to protect themselves against home invasions, such that self-defense requirements would be viewed to take precedence over local ordinances against handgun possession. The measure passed the Illinois Senate by a vote of 38-20. Barack Obama was one of the 20 state senators voting against the measure.
