‘American Idol’ Star David Archuleta Will Stop Singing to Serve a Two-Year Mormon Mission

SALT LAKE CITY (The Blaze/AP) — American Idol runner-up David Archuleta says he will take a break from his singing career to serve a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

David Archuleta Will Stop Singing for Mormon Mission | American Idol

The contestant from the 2007-2008 season made the announcement during a Christmas concert Monday in downtown Salt Lake City. The Deseret News reports that the 20-year-old Utah resident says he’s not quitting music, but feels a strong call to serve the church. Deseret has more:

After the initial storm of applause, Archuleta said serving an LDS mission was his choice.

“It‘s not because someone told me that I’m supposed to do it, and not because I no longer want to do music, but because it‘s the feeling that I’ve felt I need to do this with my life,” he said.

Archuleta is well-known for in 2007, at age 16, having been one of the youngest contestants on the seventh season of American Idol. He finished the season as the runner-up.

A video of the concert on Archuleta’s website shows him crying as he tells the crowd about his plans:

Church spokesman Eric Hawkins confirmed Archuleta’s mission on Tuesday, but declined to say where the singer will serve.

More than 52,000 church members currently are serving full-time missions worldwide. Most are men between the ages of 19 and 21.

Two years teaching man-made religion and work-righteous salvation. Very unfortunate.

The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross is all that is needed to cleanse us of sin. He paid the penalty for our sins as a substitutionary death. Nothing else is needed, and to suggest so, makes a mockery of His death of the cross, and implies that “it wasn’t enough.”

Please, Mormons, reject this man-made religion that attempts to make you “good enough” to get to Heaven. The Bible says that no one is “good” and that our so-called “good works” are “filthy rags” next to the holiness and righteousness of God through Jesus Christ.

Adding anything to the Gospel is false teaching and only creates false converts. Ever wonder what topic Jesus spoke about more than anything? It’s the issue of true converts vs. false converts. Almost every parable is about true and false converts. If Jesus devoted this much of his ministry to this subject, He must have taken it very seriously.

Please read through the Ten Commandments and see that you have violated every single one in thought, word or deed. Remember, Jesus said that “lust” is “adultery” and “hatred” is “murder.” Those who claim they are a good person, and good enough to get to Heaven have been deceived.

Simply, repent (turn from sin, do a 180) and believe that the shed blood of Jesus alone washes away all sin and restores man to a right relationship with God.

I’m confused. According to your faith what does one have to do to get to heaven? If you say nothing. then everyone goes to heaven and there is no need for hell. If you say Accept Jesus as your savior then you are admitting that you have to do something to be saved. Seems to me that mormons just believe that Saying Words isn’t all that Jesus requires for salvation.

1 Corinthians 14:33 reminds us “God is not the author of confusion”. Many verses throughout the Bible present inconsistency, contradiction and error that challenge any debate of divine inspiration of the chosen compilation. The individual writings of biblical prophets were indeed inspired, but the selected works of the bible was the product of uninspired, politically goal-oriented men and can not be dismissed. The conclusions of the First Nicaea Council in 325, The Edicts of Thessalonica 380 and the Edicts of (RomanEemperor)Theodocious 1 would finalize the great apostasy by diminishing gospel authenticity, continuity of church organization and priesthood authority through man’s failure to maintain and observe principles from sacred texts. Theodocious’ edicts called for all subjects of the roman Empire to sustain Catholic Christianity by otherwise a threat of death for non-conformation. The lower Roman regions from Alexandria to Antioch to Asis minor believed in Arianism, which is common to the teachings of God the Eternal Father separate of His firstborn creation and Son Jesus Christ. Trinitarianism View(Paganism) was injected into Christianity as a result of wilting Bishops seeking favor from Rome.
I converted to LDS— I was once misinformed just as you. I was Southern Baptist. I found a mistake in the bible and asked a question….then another. I discovered missing scriptures. The Bible is incomplete because man needed it to fit the religion of Rome

Goodstuff said, “The Bible says that no one is ‘good’.”

Read the whole verse, and the one before it: “And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.”

So Jesus says to keep the commandments if one is to enter into eternal life. Is Jesus saying that works are the source of salvation? Because that is what you are trying to pin on Mormons and it isn’t true. Christ is the source of salvation and our works are completely meaningless without Him.

You must have forgotten that Jesus also taught that we should spread the teachings of Christianity and the blessings of his Attonement and Sacrifice for us. I support his decision to go on a mission because unlike us here in America where we have the liberty to sit back and critisize one Christian religeon or another based on the differences in the tenants of each religeon, most people around the world have either never heard of Christianity or don’t know of Jesus sacrifice for us and that is why it is important to go out and spread the word of Christianity. It‘s attitudes like your’s, in thinking that you don’t even have to make an effort to be a good person because Jesus already paid for all of your sins that is causing the moral decline of our society, and in essence, your not being a good Christian!

Your zeal for the gospel teachings seems to be matched only by your ignorance of gospel fundamentals.
You like scripture so much, try this:

A true Church of Christ is composed of apostles, prophets, elders, teachers, and members (saints), who have been baptized (immersed) in the name of Jesus Christ, and who have received his spirit by the laying on of hands of his apostles, or authorized servants.

A true Church of Christ believes in visions, angels, spirits, prophesyings, revelations, healings and miracles of every kind, as described in the New Testament.

Unless it at least claims fresh revelation superseding this New Testament pattern, any creed or religious body differing from said pattern can not be considered the Church of Christ, however sincere they may otherwise be.

All straight from the Bible. And let me think how many denominations fit that New Testament pattern… thinking …. I can think of only one: the LDS Church, the one you seem to decry so much.

I have 13 footnotes for the above, referencing a total of about 390 New Testament references. Give me an email address and I’ll send them to you.

Add up all the public teebow displays, and you might get 20 minutes of time given in a two year period of the NFL. To me the word religion is used incorrectly by most. In fact to serve the true and living God, you must have a personal ‘relationship’ with Him. That of course, is only found with Jesus Christ. No adding or subtracting to what He did way back then. His work was all that was needed for any human soul to be saved. Works by men do not save, only Christ’s work is what saves. We either believe or we do not. Pass of fail.

      Seeja and tron
for 2 people who don’t care about this kid or the religion, you’ve both commented here more than anyone. Do something with your life. I know libs feel so “intellectual” when they tear down religions, but get over yourself.

and I’m peace-out to zh or drudge or tfmetals for good.

This IS news. A young performer giving up the spotlight to serve? Don’t you see the importance of this story for young people?

I’m still waiting for MARTINEZ to start his “copy and paste” plagiarized anti-Mormon campaign. Maybe he’s taking a bathroom break.

LOL! So true! Could you imagine if the hateful/mocking/degrading comments about “Mormons” were directed at Jews, Muslims, Evangelicals, or any other religion? What if there was a broadway play specifically ridiculing what Jews, Muslims, Evangelicals, or any other religion holds sacred?

David, what a great choice! I served a mission as well and although it was the most difficult thing I have ever done, I will never look back on those 18 months with regret, only joy. Serving the Lord as a missionary is a great privilege, and one we are blessed to have. Many prayers will be sent your way as you serve the Lord and share the message of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.

I loved that episode of Star Trek…

A different tune, yes, in a different language perhaps. He will be a rousing success – if not by baptisms, then certainly in his own conversion.

Oh Martinez, why am I not surprised to see you here?

Say what you want about his religion and whether or not you agree with it, but the fact remains that this guy loves God enough to drop all of his career plans to spend two years serving Him in the best way he knows how. That is a lot more than most “Christians” can say.

The true and living God will not receive the service of the self-righteous (Luke 18:10-14). Christ did not come to call the self-righteous (Matt 9:13).

Mormonism is a false works, man-centered religion. It denies the sovereign grace of God in salvation. It asserts a works based self-salvation. This is what so strongly appeals to Glenn Beck and all Mormons, including this young man.

It is completely ironic that Beck always tells his listeners to do their own research to find out the truth for themselves. He gives advice about how to be prepared in this world. But he will not take his own advice when it comes to eternity.

Too bad this young man is completely wasting his time and the talent God has blessed him with. Like all self-righteous men, he has his reward (Matt 6:5).

      @far2right-
His good works will be what he does while on his mission, not the fact that he’s simply going on a mission. See the difference? I’m sure the apostles that Christ called to preach his gospel told their friends and family where they were going before they left…right? Were they hypocrites for doing such?

Anyhow, I’m tired of hearing the “works based self-salvation” line from people who don’t understand our doctrine. Let me make it simple, we believe that salvation ONLY COMES FROM JESUS CHRIST through his atonement. We simply understand that in order to qualify for His grace, we must follow him. Now please tell me how we follow Christ if not through our good works as he commanded? You believe that all you need to do is accept him – is that not a work? I hope you at least believe the Bible when it says many, many times that we must also be baptized… is that not a work? What you fail to understand is that faith without works is dead. Look it up.
