The first wave of aid from the United States began arriving in Japan on Saturday to assist in rescue and recovery operations following Friday’s devastating 8.9 magnitude earthquake, multiple aftershocks and subsequent tsunamis.
CNN reports:
In Shiroishi, a town near the area hardest hit by the quake, two SH-60 helicopters from U.S. Naval Air Facility Atsugi delivered 1,500 pounds of rice and bread donated by people in Ebina, southeast of Tokyo, the U.S. 7th Fleet, said in a statement Saturday. The fleet is headquartered in Yokosuka, just outside Tokyo.
Two destroyers, the USS McCampbell and USS Curtis Wilbur, were off Japan’s Boso Peninsula, which shelters Tokyo Bay, and were preparing to move into position “to assist Japanese authorities with providing at-sea search and rescue and recovery operations,” the 7th Fleet said.
An additional destroyer, the USS Mustin, will depart Yokosuka on Sunday. Eight other U.S. ships are en route to Japan from various locations, set to arrive Sunday or later in the week, according to the 7th Fleet. One, the USS Tortuga, departed Japan Saturday night to pick up two helicopters in South Korea before returning in about two days.
Three ships from the USS Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group also are among the eight ships, the military said. “USS Ronald Reagan is prepared to serve as an afloat platform for refueling Japan Self Defense Force and other helicopters involved in rescue and recovery efforts ashore,” it said.
Meanwhile, the III Marine Expeditionary Force, based on the island of Okinawa, south of Japan, said it was “prepositioning forces and supplies in support of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.”
The force was sending staffers, a cargo aircraft and transport helicopters to the mainland, it said in a written statement. Additional aircraft and supplies will be sent in the next few days.
The military assistance operation is known as Operation Tomodachi, or “friendship,” the statement said. The name was chosen by the Japanese.
More aid — in the form of equipment, staffers and search-and-rescue teams — is expected to arrive Sunday.
Even Major League Baseball is stepping up to help. Commissioner Bud Selig promised assistance. Citing “our shared love of baseball for more than a century,“ Selig said in a statement that Japan is ”a particularly special place to us” and that MLB will provide aid in the coming days and weeks.
The American Red Cross has been communicating with their Japanese Red Cross Society counterparts and numerous global partners. While the organization says it has not yet received any requests for blood from Japan, they are helping in other ways — namely helping people with loved ones in Japan connect via their “Safe and Well” website.

Who is going to pay for this billion dollar so called “humanitarian effort”? Nobody! It just adds to the federal deficit. Your children and grandchildren will pay for any effort the US provides.
No American will benefit from the United States throwing money at Japan! Will you benefit? Will American corporations benefit by the US spending a billion or so trying to save Japanese lives? No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the kind of naive liberal nonsence we’ve seen time and time again from the Obama administration. Obama’s next move will be to provide free medical insurance for the injured. He’ll try to give food to those who have none.
Jesus spoke clearly on this issue and we all know what he said. Governments have no bussiness try to help the poor and helpless. Individuals who want to go to Japan and try to help, or want to send a few bucks to the Red Cross to buy some food or something, fine. No problem there. Sadly, Oki is mostly a Marine base, one Naval Station, one Air base (Kadena) and maybe 2 small Army bases. And Oki is 600 miles south of Japan. No help forthcoming from there unless North Korea gets stupid, then the Marine bases will upload onto ships and be there to send rounds downrange in a matter of hours.
I was stationed on Oki for a year as a young Marine, and we had an alert that N Korea flew warplanes into the DMZ. We were on full alert, which sucked because it was late Friday night and we were all hammered at the e club! Funny story…there is more, but not on here.

There is incredible irony in your statement that, “We don’t help grief and disaster stricken Nations to “benifit” from it, we do it because we are Americans, living in the most plentiful Nation on earth, and we give freely to those in need.”
The US government is helping the helpless in Japan. But you’d object to the US government “giving freely to those in need” if they were American citizens. You’d say that was Marxism. People are starving here and if you had you’re way, they wouldn’t get a cent. Jesus was in favor of helping they poor Sacred. These people are NOT drug tested, and live a lavish life compared to true imoverished nations. DO NOT tell me there are people starving in this Country. If they are, they are living this way by choice. Our welfare system is so out of control that we are paying able-bodied people to sit on their cans to collect a check for mearly being a baby factory.

I guess that means there will NEVER be a chance for reconciliation with a nation such as China. Never a chance for reconciliation with any of the Arab states or the Palestinians or any nation already hostile to the US and it’s allies. I say these things to point out that, indeed, it will always be an ideological battle, and that we, as a Christian nation, will always take the moral high ground because of our great values.
Not saying that there are not some redeamable nations out there. Just saying that your statement about China not being Christian (as an example), and therefore unable to comprehend forgiveness, lies at the root of most differences throughout the world.

I saw a story on Nat Geo about Pearl Harbor. They told the story of a Marine Vet in full Dress Blues who was there at the bombing at the Arizona Memorial, and he saw an old Japanese man there sobbing. They struck up a conversation.
Report Post »The old Japanese man said he was a dive bomber on that day and had “dishonorably” sunk a few ships He was ashamed, and after he spoke with the Marine, they “had a moment”, and all was forgiven by that Marine.
THAT is the Country we are, that we, as individuals, can even confront those directly responsible and give forgiveness where none is even required. That Japanese Airman was following the orders of his Emporer, and still felt shame by his own actions.
And one of our own who was there, a Marine, gave him the forgiveness that fighter pilot felt he didn’t deserve.
We are a nation of forgiveness, as (mostly) witnesses by the Civil War. What transpired amongst our ancestors is not the business of ours, except to remember….and NEVER repeat. The war to end slavery cost “white” Americans over 500,000 lives, and that price can never be reckoned, but God knew. And God made us, as a Nation, pay dearly for that sin.
I’m rambling now, forgive me.

Kids trying to find aluminum cans or glass bottles to turn in in order to eat for the night. The ONLY ones “starving” in America are the street kids begging for money to get their heroin fix. I live a block away from a government housing apartment complex, where the women there have gatherings to discuss ways to cheat the welfare system in order to get more money for their habits.
The “poverty” in America is the envy of the world! 90% of those doing nothing and collecting a check CHOOSE to do so because it allows them to exist and give NOTHING back to society, the same that is flipping their bill TO DO NOTHING!

Posted on March 13, 2011 at 12:12amI understand your argument, albeit sarcastic. Can we really afford to help Japan in the long run? Not really. Can we afford to give out free stuff to people here at home. Not really. Not the Government. Not with our tax dollars or by adding to the debt. I have no problem with you donating your entire paycheck to those in need, whether at home or abroad. As much as I believe we need to help those in Japan, I believe private donations is what needs to happen. I don’t think we should do nothing to help. It just shouldn‘t be subsidized by the Government using money they don’t have. You do have money. It’s time for you, and others like you, to step up and send them the help they need.
Similar situation here at home. Do the poor need help? Absolutely. You are free to sell your home, your car and your 50″ LED 3D television you just bought and give all the excess cash to a starving family. That’s your money to spend and give as you see fit. You do not have the right to give away other peoples money in the name of charity.
As the old saying goes, it‘s easy to be charitable when it’s not your money.

My Sacred Honor is not the one who is confused. You are confused.
If people are starving here in America, it is due to Obama’s attack on our economy, his agenda that has devalued our dollar, and the tightening of money for food to be contributed to the food pantries. Contributions to charities are DOWN since Obama took over. But the prices are going UP. If Obama didn’t want people starving in this country, he should have stayed under his rock. Itamar massacre: Fogel family butchered while sleeping
The Jewish settler family was butchered by the swords used by the followers of Muhammad.
The names of the five family members murdered in the Itamar terror attack were cleared for publication Saturday evening:
Udi Fogel, 36, Ruth Fogel, 35, and their children Yoav, 11, Elad, 4, and three-month-old Hadas.
The three siblings who survived the attack are Tamar, 12, Roi, 8, and two-year-old Yishai.
They are staying with their grandparents at this time.
The funeral for the victims will be held Sunday in Jerusalem at 1:30 pm.
The IDF must never be removed from Samaria, an eternal part of Israel.
The children’s grandfather, Haim Fogel, recounted the difficult moments his family has faced in the past 24 hours.
Millions of people have been slain by the followers of Muhammad, and the World seems to have learned nothing.

Posted on March 13, 2011 at 1:34amIf we can’t help other countries when they have disasters like this because of the financial cost, then we are so morally bankrupt that it doesn’t matter whether we are broke or not!!
It is not that we don’t want to help the needy in this country……too many of them game the system, and we see it. We have children in our school going hungry, and we have to feed them before they go home because their parents will take the food away from them to either sell it, or not share with the children. We have a clothes closet for needy families and the same people come month after month to get clothes…they wear them until they are dirty, and because they are too lazy to do laundry they throw them away and come and get some more.
What I expect our government to do is NOT spend 3.4 million to build a stupid tunnel for turtles to cross the road, or 3.9 billion for the late Sen. Byrd to build a 4 lane highway to nowhere and connecting to nothing in West Virginia.
When it comes to things like the disaster in Japan…..you just do the right thing!!

Report Post »please provide some stats about all those dying of starvation in America, you obviously don’t know a thing about poverty here. We are not a country with starving children, at least not because they lack food, maybe those taking care of them are not giving it to them, but it is available and this would then be neglect by caretakers, not caused because they can not get the food.
I tried to find some numbers to share, no luck so far, because none of the research I have found lists number who have died of starvation, leads me to believe that is a very low number. I have heard of more than one person who has died from lack of heat in the winter, but not starvation. Our leader is ok with heating prices skyrocketing, remember it is NECESSARY according to our leader. Now this IS a problem for those in poverty here.
I work with the poor, they are not starving. Poverty in America is caused by two primary issues, lack of sufficient jobs and lack of fathers in the home. Both causes perpetuated by the welfare system.

Posted on March 13, 2011 at 2:30pmI understand everyones emotional response to want to help. I want to help. If I didn’t have school starting up, I’d volunteer to go help. The problem is in a lot of your arguments, where is the line where we won’t cross to help? Most of you advocate for the end of foreign aid. A lot of those countries that get foreign aid NEED IT. Starving children and such. Should we invade every country that has an evil dictator? Children are dying in the streets! I have compassion but where is the line between policing the world and worrying about ourselves?
I know The Blazers have a line they won’t cross, where’s yours? Should we go invade Egypt? Lybia, The entire Middle East? I suppose some of you would welcome that. Kill all the nasty Muslims; it’s the answer to it all. I think that was the answer for our medieval ancestors during the Crusades.
I appreciate the argument that we probably owe japan some money, in which case, that argument works for me. If there is debt held by Japan, it should be free and clear after this.
I’m not trying to be a heartless bastard but you have to understand, where is the line that you wouldn’t cross in “Helping a country in need”. They lost 10,000 people, which is horrible. Posted on March 13, 2011 at 11:12pmNobamazone, honestly I appreciate your thoughtful post. I think you are right (after searching a bit). Very, very few children in the United States are dying from starvation if any. Malnutrition is a different issue in my mind, and I think that a lot of school aged kids get most of their daily calories from government subsidized school breakfasts. But I agree with you on the starvation issue, and appreciate your challenge. I learned something.
I’m not sure what to make of the rest of your post. By “our leader” do you mean the President of the United States? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I‘ll assume that’s is who you mean.
You say that Obama thinks it is “necessary” to have have higher gas and/or oil prices. He certainly has never said that. No one, no matter how loony would say that. Sorry, but that’s false.
I disagree with your statement that welfare reduces the number of jobs available to the uneducated and unskilled and your claim that without welfare a-hole fathers would be less likely to abandon their children. Although frankly I have to admit you have direct experience that I don’t
Something about your post makes me think you are one of the “good guys.” Very good post, and I hope that by me, jzs, saying that I don’t ruin reputation here!
