Americans Mistakingly Attribute Bible Verse to…Captain America?

Captain America had a huge summer. As of August 29, the comic book character’s big-screen showing grossed a global total of $326,008,620. In fact, the hero is so popular that, in a recent poll, some Americans mistakingly attributed a Bible verse to him.
According to a study commissioned by the American Bible Society, 63 percent of respondents claimed that the following quote came from Captain America, Martin Luther King, Jr. or former President George W. Bush: “We often suffer, but we are never crushed. Even when we don’t know what to do, we never give up.”
While this certainly seems like something one of the nation’s bravest comic book heros would say, the quote isn’t his (nor is it MLK or Bush’s). It’s actually from 2 Corinthians 4:8 in the Bible. Apparently, Americans need to brush up on their biblical trivia. Deseret News does make an interesting point, though, regarding wording:
…if the survey had used the King James Version of the quote (”We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair”) instead of the Contemporary English Version, people may have recognized it better as a Bible verse.
The ABS commissioned the study to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, while also highlighting the release of The Freedom Bible, a new version of the Holy Bible that focuses on spiritual openness. In addition to the aforementioned Captain America oddity, ABS also found the following (as per the press release):
- Despite significant security measures taken since Sept. 11, only 9 percent of Americans feel safer today than they did prior to Sept. 11. Thirty-six percent felt safer prior to the attacks of Sept. 11 than they do today.
- Only 4 percent of Americans rely most on professional counseling to help deal with trauma. Four times as many (16 percent) rely most on the Bible.
- Despite living in a predominantly Christian nation, 82 percent of Americans who have dealt with trauma rely most on sources other than the Bible to cope, including 6 percent of whom say they do not rely on anything.
These findings are certainly relevant, considering the 10th anniversary of the attacks that forever changed America — and the world. Safety fears and the ability to deal with personal trauma are issues that have impacted U.S. citizens greatly since the attacks.
On a lighter note, considering the new Bible edition’s focus upon freedom, who better to mistakingly attribute a quote to than Captain America?

Posted on September 2, 2011 at 8:51amYes, “Psalm 109:8.”Let his days be few; and let another take his office.” So is this one from the Acts of the Apostles, where Peter is addressing them, and he too quotes from the Psalms, “For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.”
I always wonder, when “Conservative Christians” quote that, just who exactly is their Bishop, and from where did he get his authority? It is clear that the translators of the vaunted KJV knew exactly what constitutes the office of Bishop, and therefore used the word “bishoprick” – in any event, it is perfectly clear from the context in Acts 1:20, that the office referred to is the Office of Apostle, as another is selected to replace Judas Iscariot. So it seems to me, a truly Conservative Christian, would know the answer the answer to the question – “Who is your Bishop?”

I like the MacArthur Study Bible, Halley’s Bible Handbook and Dr. J. Vernon McGee’s commentary for starters…but test everything in light of scripture and hold fast to that which is good and true.
.
Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
Many people don’t search the scriptures anymore…I listen to the preacher, write down what he says and check out the bible before taking it to heart. It is the final authority.
The Bereans were more fair mined and they searched the scriptures. I love that and I love the fact that the Spirit of God is the one that does all of the work in spite of ourselves. Yeah, we sometimes get caught up in trying to push people into heaven but if they don’t search the scriptures then your words are like pearls before swine. JIMHO
Don’t believe me, well then read the Word of God for yourselves and study it… Let Him begin a good work in you…He is certain to finish it brother.

Where does it tell you what are the Scriptures that are divinely inspired? Where does Paul tell us that the Gospel of Matthew is Scripture, but not the Gospel of Thomas? In fact, doesn’t Paul write and say that it is THE CHURCH which is the pillar and foundation of the truth?

Posted on August 31, 2011 at 5:54pmI love my AV, but God speaks most effectively through current English, not Shakespearean. That’s one reason why Jesus and His apostles used their Septuagint translation of the Tanakh (the Jewish O.T.) rather than the old Hebrew, which was also suffering from some Scribal sloppy-copying. Did you know that at least 90% of N.T. quotations of the O.T. are letter-for-letter right out of the LXX and not the Hebrew? Take 20 verses at random and check it out. As a Berean, you’ll want to go back and read each O.T. verse being quoted in the N.T. When I discovered this, it blew me away, because I was raised (and I taught classes) extolling the T.R. but, being a Berean, I responded to the challenge and God opened my eyes. Wow. He is good and I stand corrected. Praise Him forever!

Posted on August 31, 2011 at 6:59pm@DONALDCHAR Well there could very well be some good reason for that. Not everyone understood or knew Hebrew in Jesus day. Gentiles especially did not know, but everyone understood and knew Greek, being Alexander the Great made it the law that every person was to know Greek. So in Jesus time everyone still knew Greek even though the Romans were now ruling, it was the one language that the entire world knew at the time. Which is no coincidence. BTW God speaks most effectively through any language which the reader can understand. The Holy Spirit is not limited by other languages.

And, indeed, if accuracy, fidelity, and the strictest attention to the letter of the text, be supposed to constitute the qualities of an excellent version, this of all versions, must, in general, be accounted the most excellent. Every sentence, every work, every syllable, every letter and point, seem to have been weighed with the nicest exactitude; and expressed, either in the text, or margin, with the greatest precision.” Alexander Geddes (d. 1802), a Roman Catholic priest, who in 1792 issued the first column of his own translation of the Bible, accordingly paid tribute to the Bible of his time.

Posted on September 1, 2011 at 1:17amREAGAN abd THE AUTHORIZED VERSION
In one of his famous radio addresses, Ronald Reagan, the great orator, eloquently gives his thoughts on the Authorized Version or the King James Bible in comparison to the “Good News Bible” (also called the Good News for Modern Man and Today’s English Version). The following transcript is from Reagan’s radio address which aired September 6, 1977, as printed in the book Reagan In His Own Hand:
What would you say if someone decided Shakespeare’s plays, Charles Dicken’s novels, or the music of Beethoven could be rewritten & improved? I’ll be rite back.
Writing in the journal “The Alternative” Richard Hanser author of “The Law & the Prophets” and “Jesus: What Manner of Man Is This?” has called attention to something that is more than a little mind boggling. It is my understanding that the Bible (both the old & new testaments) has been the best selling book in the entire history of printing. [continued...]

Posted on September 1, 2011 at 1:18am[...continued] Now another attempt has been made to improve it. I say another because there have been several fairly recent efforts to—quote “make the Bible more readable & understandable”—unquote. But as Mr. Hanser so eloquently says, “For more than 3 1/2 centuries its language and its images have penetrated more deeply into the general culture of the English speaking world, and been more dearly treasured, than anything else ever put on paper.” He then quotes the irreverent H. L. Mencken who spoke of it as purely a literary work and said it was, “probably the most beautiful piece of writing in any language.”
They were, of course, speaking of the authorized version, the one that came into being when the England of King James was scoured for translators & scholars. It was a time when the English language had reached it’s peak of richness & beauty.
Now we are to have “The Good News Bible” which will be in, “the natural English of everyday adult conversation.” I’m sure the scholars and clergymen supervised by the American Bible Society were sincerely imbued with the thought that they were taking religion to the people with their “Good News Bible” but I can’t help feeling we should instead be taking the people to religion and lifting them with the beauty of language that has outlived the centuries. Posted on September 1, 2011 at 1:18am[...continued] Mr. Hanser has quoted from both the St. James Version & the “Good News Bible” some well known passages for us to compare. A few thousand years ago Job said “How forcible are right words!” [Job 6:25] The new translators have him saying “Honest words are convincing.” That’s only for openers. There is the passage, “For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.” [Eccl. 1:18]. Is it really an improvement to say instead, “The wiser you are, the more worries you have; the more you know the more it hurts.”
In the New Testament—Mathew, we read “The voice of the one crying in the wilderness. Prepare ye the way.” [Matt. 3:3] The Good News version translates that, “Someone is shouting in the desert. Get the road ready.” It sounds like a straw boss announcing lunch hour is over.
The hauntingly beautiful 23rd Psalm is the same in both versions, for a few words “The Lord is my shepherd” but instead of continuing “I shall not want” we are supposed to say “I have everything I need.” [continued...]

Posted on September 1, 2011 at 1:19am[...continued] The Christmas story has undergone some modernizing but one can hardly call it improved. The wondrous words “Fear not: for; behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy” has become, “Don’t be afraid! I am here with good news for you.”
The sponsors of the “Good News” version boast that their bible is as readable as the daily paper—and so it is. But do readers of the daily news find themselves moved to wonder, “at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth”? Mr. Hanser suggests that sadly the “tinkering & general horsing around with the sacred texts will no doubt continue” as pious drudges try to get it right. “It will not dawn on them that it has already been gotten right.”
This is Ronald Reagan. Thanks for listening. Aired September 6, 1977 (Reagan In His Own Hand, 2001, pp. 409,410,411)

Posted on August 31, 2011 at 3:25pmI don’t really like to get in biblical debate, there are a number of reasons for this…but anyways i do have something to say about your comment…and to really understand you have to get past the word in front of your eyes and go a little deeper…
The Bible says, God helps those that have faith….now if you think about that, and the real meaning of faith; those that feel like they can’t help themselves obviously do not have faith….so those that help themselves, and do not wallow in sorrow…they move on with their lives even in through times…those are the ones that have faith….

Posted on August 31, 2011 at 4:32pmPastormatt is correct.
Without Jesus:
We cannot provide for our salvation
We cannot earn our salvation
we cannot give enough to get salvation
we cannot love enough for our salvation
we cannot help enough for our salvation
we cannot change this world in any manner
we are helpless and hopeless
we are critters of sin and death
we are messed up and messy
we are evil in nature
God saw our condition from the first day and sent Jesus (God Himself) to die for us to put right what we made wrong.
With Jesus:
We are clothed in God’s righteous
Our sins are forgiven
We are given salvation
we are given power through His name to change the world
we are given help and hope
We died to sin through Jesus and are raised from death through Jesus’ resurrection
We are cleaned up and straightened up
we are righteous in nature through Jesus
so yeah pastormatt is correct,

Posted on August 31, 2011 at 6:33pmFaith is a part of love. Love is Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage.
Loyalty = bearing true faith in God; commitment
Duty = fulfilling your obligations; you made a commitment, stick to it
Respect= acting as if you are standing before God (because you are) and treating others the way you want them to treat you
Selfless Service = sacrifice, going the extra mile,
Honor = remembering that you carry the name of God to all people and keeping a good reputation for that purpose
Integrity = living in truth, Jesus is the Truth. uprightness, righteousness; trustworthiness
Personal Courage = facing adversity because the above will offend just about everyone you meet.
Faith is a lot more than just believing, It is loyalty to God. We have to realize that we need God to be able to accept God. So having faith is admitting you can’t do anything without God.

Posted on August 31, 2011 at 2:57pmYes, it’s been my experience and seen polls that unfortunately say that a very “large number” shall we say of “Christians” do not know many scriptures, etc. Known that for a long time. Then you ask why the churches have gone into apostasy and so many have left & those that call themselves “Christians” don’t “walk the talk”. For one – they don’t know the “talk” (verses) to begin with. It’s easier to just sit and listen to someone who claims to be a minister & not do any research/reading on your own…..voila — we have a million different denominations & not really teaching or living what the New Testament says.. Jesus weeps.

Those that do not read their bibles we encourage.
Those that are hungry we feed.
Those in prison we visit.
I could continue… we are to be patient with the less mature
humble always, not thinking more of ourselves then we ought to.
James 1:22 Says… do not merely read the Word, do what it says.
Jesus is comming back for His “bride”. She will be made ready for His return.

Posted on August 31, 2011 at 2:50pmSo, who authorizes groups like the ABS to retranslate the Bible? Is it still considered “scripture” when they do this? How do we know they haven’t changed the meaning or context in some subtle or significant way?
(When I compare the above “new translation” verse to the KJV of it, it seems significantly different. While I agree that “but not in despair” can mean something similar to “we never give up”, I wouldn’t call them equal.)
When you consider that differing takes on what the Bible’s verse “really mean” is the basis for why there are so many different Christian religions, I’d think that a “retranslation” or “modernization” of the text would be frought with opportunities for disagreement…

Posted on August 31, 2011 at 3:18pmA person has to do their own research to find out what is best.
Report Post »After I did my research and have listened to the pros and cons of different translations, my opinion goes as follows.
KJV= best
NKJV= second
NAS= third
The NKJV is just worded so it is easier to read and understand without learning ‘old english’ slangs and such. NAS is the best modern english version that is true to original texts. Good for study but not as good for general reading as the NKJV, which is the best ‘allround’ version, IMO
It’s interesting to note that the NIV is the most popular in America and has so many serious errors. It is translated by paragraph, not word for word which has lead to quite a few errors. Unlike the others mentioned which are translated word for word. Look it up yourself.
I will not waste time with any other than these three translations.
This is my opinion and I will not argue it anymore. Although I do respect the, “KJV ONLY”, crowd, I have given up arguing that I am saved and in the truth despite not only reading the KJV. That view, again, IMO, is a little over the top.

Posted on August 31, 2011 at 2:41pmNever be ashamed of the gospel. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. I am glad Captain America is relishing the scriptures.
