Could America’s ‘Miserable’ Youth Decide the 2012 Election?

Youth Misery Index | Could America’s Youth Decide the 2012 Election? With 23.7 million American workers either unemployed or underemployed and the markets continuing to hide in the shadow of the eurozone crisis, the health of the U.S. economy leaves much to be desired.

It appears unlikely that the U.S. economy will improve anytime soon and many Americans have become impatient with the Obama administration. However, perhaps more frustrated than any other group are voters ages 18-29 — the same demographic that overwhelmingly supported the president in 2008.

And why shouldn’t they be angry?

Considering the fact that youth unemployment is currently 17.4 percent, average graduating student debt is $26,300, and national debt per capita is $46,900, according to a recent study put out by the Young America’s Foundation (YAF) called the Youth Misery Index (YMI), it’s no wonder that America’s youth appears to be nervous, angry and scared.

Youth Misery Index | Could America’s Youth Decide the 2012 Election? The Youth Misery Index

“Young people are battling one of the worst job markets in the last century, and hundreds of billions of federal ‘stimulus’ dollars have failed to revive the labor market,” the YMI claims. “Thanks to big government and the Obama administration, young people are miserable.”

This fear and uncertainty could play a major role in the upcoming 2012 election. Poor economic conditions and failed policies have already affected the president’s approval ratings and a sustained lack of support could affect him at the voting booth.

“There’s a huge correlation between support for the Obama administration and these numbers,” Ron Meyer, YAF spokesman and co-author of the YMI, told The Blaze in an interview. “Since Obama’s inauguration, the administration’s approval rating has dropped 30 percent — down from the high 70s to now 48 (46 according to some polls).”

However, some analysts also believe President Obama’s approval rating has been affected by more than just a bad economy.

“It’s been a plummet. And I think it’s for two reasons: honesty and the economy,” Meyer said. “Young people think the Obama administration has been dishonest with its policies. A lot of liberal, the young left, are disappointed that he hasn’t lived up to his lofty rhetoric.”

Watch YAF spokesman Ron Meyer explain the YMI via Fox and Friends:

“Young people are naturally skeptical of the government — especially about transparency and corruption — that’s why they’re so apathetic. But they gave President Obama a chance. Frankly, I think young people think the Obama administration made it worse,” Meyer said.

Many critics believe that a lack of jobs, combined with a feeling of disillusionment in the political system, has led to anger and resentment among younger voters.

“Young people know they’re angry and that’s the only thing they know for certain. They know that they are sending resumes into space and they don’t know if anybody’s even looking at them or if they’re going straight into the shredder,” Hannah Jackman, Program Director of The National Journalism Center, a training program for aspiring young journalists, told The Blaze.

“They don’t know how to vent their frustration so they channel it at corporations and think that capitalism has failed them. The truth is they should be marching on the White House,” Jackman added.

This anger has translated into not just a resentment of “big business” but also a  noticeable decline in youth support for President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign. If these reports are accurate, and young voters are indeed abandoning President Obama en masse, then the implications for the 2012 election could be enormous.

Recall that in 1980, President Ronald Reagan was able to win the White House with strong support from voters ages 18-29.

“Reagan brought an entire generation to the Republican Party in 1980, and in 1984 he won the youth vote by 20 percent,” writes Margaret Hoover in the Wall Street Journal. The youth vote, historically pro-Democrat, populated Reagan rallies with cries of “Four more years!” according to PBS’ “Reagan” history series.

In 2008, President Obama won a full 68 percent of the youth vote, the biggest in American presidential history. And this was no small thing. It can easily be argued that youth vote guaranteed him the presidency.

So what does the current state of the U.S. economy, a loss of youth support for President Obama’s re-election campaign and the Youth Misery Index mean? It could mean that the youth voting bloc is up for grabs and the entire 2012 election is contingent on whoever wins their support.

Should the DNC or GOP decide to woo the youth vote, they would do well to address the issues raised in the Youth Misery Index.

“Young America’s Foundation is the only group talking about these things and saying, ‘Okay, young people, you’re in the worst economic situation you’ve ever had, that we’ve had in the last 100 years, and here’s why: it’s big government, it’s the Obama administration, it’s these policies.’ No one else is doing that and that’s sad,” Meyer said.

Youth Misery Index | Could America’s Youth Decide the 2012 Election?Youth Misery Index | Could America’s Youth Decide the 2012 Election?Click to enlarge.

The Obama re-election campaign has already begun work on reestablishing its support base with the youth vote. By advertising initiatives such as the “Summer Jobs+” program, and by using information gathered through National Campus Leadership Council, the White House may be able to accomplish this.

What would the GOP need to do to win the youth vote?

“If conservatives propose a pro-freedom agenda that give’s the people the power—and if they stay principled—then we will pick up youth support. That’s what Reagan did: he had a principled stance on a lot of issues and young people turned out for him in huge numbers. And, his principled policies worked. During the Reagan years, youth unemployment drastically declined as his policies reinvigorated America’s economy. If the recipe works, stick with it,” Meyer said.

I doubt many students, given the choice between President Obama and a republican challenger would vote for the republican. But wait, I have an idea! Let’s require that people of this age group have a state issued ID. That will obviously help the republicans, by eliminating some of the, you know, others…

Im somewhat miserable. Im 22 and go to school, I have a job. But what I see is pain in the future. Not because of my personal life. Because of the place America is heading. Because the generations before us have let slime ball, soul sucking, evil people rule over us. They have literally planed the downfall of freedom and peace. They want to control every aspect of our lives.

      That makes me sad.

America had better wake up and see what is happening.

Let me tell you something. I just turned 30 this year, so technically I’m not “youth” according to this. But I’m miserable because the older generations absolutely dropped the ball on their watch. The older generations sat around complacent while government expanded and expanded, inflation skyrocketed, and greed took over.

The older generations completely failed. They sat around saying, “Well there’s nothing you can do about it, so why even pay attention anymore?” I can‘t tell you the number of people I’ve talked to from my parent’s generation that are completely clueless. They have no idea how anything works.

So I don’t want to hear it. You can blame the youth all you want. And I agree that there are way too many stupid liberal kids. But don‘t pretend that your generation didn’t fail. It did. Miserably.

Certainly a magnificant few teenagers or early tweens study the issues, they subject themselves to sound bites and mob-mentality.

We need to change the laws that enable voting after participation in a VOTERS EDUCATION CLASS, or simply disallow any voting privilages until your 25 or OLDER.

“The young have exalted notions, because they have not been humbled by life or learned its necessary limitations; moreover, their hopeful disposition makes them think themselves equal to great things—and that means having exalted notions. They would always rather do noble deeds than useful ones: Their lives are regulated more by moral feeling than by reasoning…. All their mistakes are in the direction of doing things excessively and vehemently. They overdo everything; they love too much, hate too much, and the same with everything else.”

Parents and non-parents alike might be shocked to learn a new study estimates that roughly 1 in 3 U.S. youths will be arrested for a non-traffic offense by age 23 — a “substantively higher” proportion than predicted in the 1960s.

The study, posted online by the journal Pediatrics, shows that between about 25% to 41% of 23-year-olds have been arrested or taken into police custody at least once for a non-traffic offense. If you factor in missing cases, that percentage could lie between about 30% and 41%.

I’m 24, so I definitely fall into the age range mentioned in this study. I wouldn’t categorize myself as miserable, but my husband will be done with school fairly soon, and we are extremely nervous about finding a job because everyone wants “experience”. We obviously don’t have that experience. Please be careful to not lump all youth into the “mindless, liberal, lazy, spoiled category. My husband works his butt off to work, go to school, and spend time with our family. But we are frustrated with what is going on in the government. Almost all of our friends are in the same boat, and they are frustrated too. We are also scared of what is going to happen to this country. We want something different. And by that I mean we don’t want to same old politicians with the same old lines. And before you bash my generation, remember that your generation got us into this mess. My husband and I are voting for Ron Paul, so are almost all the people we know. We are not “crazy” either. Almost every young person we talk to loves Ron Paul.(He also consistently gets over 50% of the youth vote in polls) So if the GOP wants the youth vote…nominate Ron Paul and you’ll have all the youth votes you want.

I say that young and old generations need to vote with intelligence and take back the greatness of America. The pure lies and deceit from all sides of our previous government must be stopped. The problem is that we trusted in them. We all know now that the only way is to take them all out of office one by one and replace them with true Constitutional Restoring Americans. Most of all never to give trust in a government again. Liberalism/Marxism always leads to Communism. The Communist thinkers will never go away and always return with more force, so we must remind every future generation against this evil force. It is up to all of us to be constant and continuous watch dogs for our freedom for all of time, now and forever to come.
We all want freedom. This election is to free us and let us all work together to rebuild this mess. United we stand, divided we fall. Don’t play into their evil hands, by letting them race bait or generation bait, and divide us. It will take every one of us to join hands or they will win. Then all that will be left is blood shed.
I see how in my own family that the youth blames us and we blame them. It is all of our faults and we all need to unite and correct it. If we divide our family ties, then they win. This has been their plan all along. The children think the parents are stupid and the parents can’t believe the ignorance of their children. This has been the goal of the communist take over of education, it is working.

That computes to 30% of registered voters voting for obama. The only reason we got saddled with hope-and-change is because there was a poor turnout. Next time, please vote. The same could be said of most voters in America. That’s why the Republicans got McCain in 08 and will probably get McCained again this year.
When the Progressives took over America in 1913, their plan was to control what people “know” – via control of the media and education at all levels. They succeeded and we have been governed by Progressives in both parties ever since. They lead the public to think (or should I say “know”) that there is a difference between the R‘s and the D’s so that sides can be taken and we can pretend that we have a choice, but the fact is that both parties are progressive, statist, big-government, big-spending monstrosities. Republicans got McCain in 2008 because Mike Huckabee refused to leave the race when it was obvious that he wasn’t going to win. He stayed in the race solely to prevent Romney from winning, as he split the conservative vote with Romney.

Romney learned his lesson, and realized that instead of trying to fight for the conservative vote, he can just let his opponents characterize him as the moderate. He gets the moderate vote, the others split the conservative vote, and he wins. Brilliance.

Oklahoma, When you spread media lies, I have to call you out. Stop coming on here bashing Paul with your lies and inuendos. Paul has never said he wants to legalize drugs of any kind, but that the Federal government should stop the war on drugs policy that costs billions of dollars and is not effective. Leave thes issues for each state through the states constituents to decide on what is legal and what is not. I doubt that voting drugs legal would be an easy thing to accomplish, but medicinal use of marijuana is something that can help some and I do not see a problem with that, and marijuana would not be legal for others to buy, sell or use. It would be at the bottom of the police concern and less people would be arrested for using it. Heroin, Meth, Cocaine, LSD and hard drugs like that would never be legalized or allowed for medical purposes. Get real man.

You see young people, we believed the ********* they taught us in school, we believed the ******** the media heaped on our heads. Decide for yourselves!!! Freedom is worth fighting for, and it is not free. You have to fight for it. Thats why no matter what bunghole wants to pontificate, I will vote for Ron Paul. Yes some things he says scares me, but I am ready for real hope and change. Even if it cost me. Why? Because I want my children and Grand children to be free. @ Ghost- The youth of America voted 68% for Obozo. What does that tell you? It tells me that they are easily lead, subject to “star” power, media influence and peer pressure. They have little if any real life experience and not even a rudimentary knowledge of the constitution. I would not trust them to select my produce, much less my president. Any faith I had in the youth, as a group, has dissipated considerably since I’ve witnessed the disaster their last choice has been. I would be in favor of raising the voting age to 30.

Forgive me but I’m going to take this opportunity to brag about my kids. I have a 23 year old son and a 19 year old daughter. Both are Christians, conservatives, and very intelligent and mature. Neither has ever used any drugs, alcohol, or tobacco. My son is following in my footsteps and is in the Police Academy and will be a sworn officer in May. He studied Criminal Justice in college and excelled in his Constitutional Law class and also took Michael Badnariks Constitution class on his own, after graduating college. I feel safe in saying he knows more about the Constitution than 99% of Blaze posters (he is a lot like Colt1860, who I think is the same age). My daughter is a Pre-Med student in college and just today texted me from school, excited that a “Students for Ron Paul” group organized on campus collecting many pages of signatures to try to get Dr. Paul to speak at the University.

I’m obviously very proud of both of my kids and the fact that they understand the principles of individual liberty and free market capitalism – the things that made America great. I’m also proud that they are both informed and intelligent voters and they fully support the most honorable and conservative Christian in the 2012 Presidential race – Ron Paul.

The future is dismal, and they have a long way to go. To a large extent, the young are correct. I believe other States have open voting. A bus load of voters could get an early start and vote often in 12 hours of open poll time. PAUL’S PRO-AMERICA FOREIGN POLICY

      * Make securing our borders the top national security priority.

      * Avoid long and expensive land wars that bankrupt our country by using constitutional means to capture or kill terrorist leaders who helped attack the U.S. and continue to plot further attacks

      * Guarantee our intelligence community’s efforts are directed toward legitimate threats and not spying on innocent Americans through unconstitutional power grabs like the Patriot Act.

      * End the nation-building that is draining troop morale, increasing our debt, and sacrificing lives with no end in sight.

      * Follow the Constitution by asking Congress to declare war before one is waged.

      * Only send our military into conflict with a clear mission and all the tools they need to complete the job – and then bring them home.

      * Ensure our veterans receive the care, benefits, and honors they have earned when they return.

      * Revitalize the military for the 21st century by eliminating waste in a trillion-dollar military budget.

      * Prevent the TSA from forcing Americans to either be groped or ogled just to travel on an airplane and ultimately abolish the unconstitutional agency.

      * Stop taking money from the middle class and the poor to give to rich dictators through foreign aid.

As President, Ron Paul’s national defense policy will ensure that the greatest nation in human history is strong, secure, and respected.

it would be a POSTIVE CHANGE….but see what THAT got you?

You GOT – your kids back at home and on your insurance.

They are PROBABLY STILL UNDER YOUR ROOF – so YOU need to teach them
    the importance of THIS ELECTION.

FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE – take charge as a PARENT AND HELP TO PUT THIS
COUNTRY ON THE RIGHT PATH….SO YOUR KIDS WILL HAVE A COUNTRY TO
SCREW UP WHEN THEY BECOME SEASONED ADULTS.

Between their Marxist professors, drugs, the economic ineptitude and hate speech of the Obama crowd, little wonder they are miserable. JFK asked young people to do things for the betterment of America. Obama asks our young people to hate banks, capitalism, rich CEOs, and Wall Street. Heck, now they are encouraged to Occupy public space. Hope someone reaches the youth before their futures go down Obama’s Marxist drain…

The young ones are coming and they are coming on board for Ron Paul…How do you like them apples Republit@rds?

They want Freedoms to choose their own destiny without the Government interfereing and regulating everything.
They don’t want to fight or pay for invasions of foriegn countries, only to destroy them and rebuilld them.
They see Obama has spent their future on helping the feckless teat sucjkers that refuse to work.
They will give us Ron Paul as President in 2012 or rand paul in 2016.

From an old combat veteran..I salute you yunguns…

I hope you are right about today’s youth embracing self-responsibility and distancing themselves from the entitlement mentality. I hope you are wrong about them choosing Paul. But as seen in 2008, the youth does not always make the best choices, that is how we got Obama.

Shasta, you would have preferred McCain? The same guy who just pushed for the NDAA to put Americans in jail without trial?

“Drugs, Guns and Madness in the Ron Paul Revolution” – I call bull. As a Ron Paul Supporter that is also a successful computer engineering student, I have never seen any of this nonsense. In fact, while I support the legalization of drugs, I won’t even smoke a cigarette, due to my asthma. (Although, it’s good to know I have an out after people like you help the power-hungry, corrupt political class bring this country completely into the totalitarian circle.)

Time_to-end or Yep, thanks for that link. The truth is found from the responses at the bottom. That will tell you how utterly ridiculous the article is. This article, according to quite a few answers at the bottom, made up voters minds to vote for Paul. Thanks Yep.
