Amnesty International Calls on Canadian Authorities to Arrest George W. Bush

Amnesty International Calls on Canadian Authorities to Arrest George W. BushAmnesty International is calling on Canadian authorities to arrest former president George W. Bush during his planned visit to British Columbia next week.

The human rights group said Bush violated international law when his administration utilized enhanced interrogation techniques in the questioning of enemy combatants. Amnesty also asserts Bush should be brought on charges of war crimes and torture.

“It is incumbent upon Canadian officials to investigate, arrest and prosecute former president Bush for torture when he arrives in Canada a week tomorrow,” said Alex Neve, Amnesty Canada’s secretary general.

Neve even went so far as to say the Mounties should be sent for Bush as soon as he sets foot on Canadian soil.

CBC News adds:

Neve said many will argue that arresting Bush is unrealistic because the United States is a close and powerful ally or that the crisis after 9-11 required extraordinary measures.

“None of those arguments justify inaction under international law,” he said.

Neve conceded that arresting a former president would likely cause tension with the United States, but “taking a principled step merits that sort of strain.”

Neve said the international arm of Amnesty sent a lengthy brief to Justice Minister Rob Nicholson outlining the government’s responsibilities under international law and urging him to act.

“This is something the entire global movement stands behind,” Neve said.

Nicholson‘s office did not respond to Neve’s request, however.

Bush and former president Bill Clinton are slated to attend an economic conference in British Columbia next week.

Neve’s interview can be viewed by following the CBC link above.

Your lack of education and class is showing. First of all Canada is about 20% french. Secondly Canada has been the strongest ally the U.S. has had for about 200 years. Sure there’s a great U.S. affinity for England thanks to the relationship between Reagan and Thatcher and Bush and Blair. But the relationship between the U.S. and Canada goes back a lot further than that. There are Canadian troops fighting and dying in Iraq and Afghanistan right now. Canada is our largest trading partner, largest supplier of imported oil. Canadian families housed and fed thousands of Americans who were stranded in Canada for weeks when all flights were stopped after 9/11. Canada is our best friend. It’s assinine jerks like you that give the U.S. a bad name overseas. So shut your stupid, uneducated mouth.

I think the whole point is that, if he is in another country, he is not fully protected by US laws and is subject to international law. Don’t complain, international law is how many criminals (US and foreign) have been captured and brought to justice. That an organization seeks to use the same technique against “Dubya” who it has a legitimate beef with (according to their standards) cannot be faulted.

As staunchly as Canada has refused to extradite criminals who may face the death penalty, I doubt they will pay much heed to this issue.

I’ve learned a lot about George since he left office, and have gone from a devout fan to wondering what the heck I was thinking. I think he did the best he could to defend us, and we will never know what other acts of terror were stopped because of his actions…but armchair quarterback, weekend warrior, hindsight and all that…it would be nice to turn the clock back and have another go.

MAXIM – If we lived by the Constitution then please find the section which condones abuse and torture and quote it to me. The USA was one of the original signatories of the International Court of Justice at The Hague. Why would we sign and be a party to something to which we didn’t intend to adhere? – although I guess we can go back in history and find that we have broken EVERY treaty with the American Indian Nations, and continue to do so. It has been suggested that neither Bush nor Cheney visit Europe – for ANY reason, since there is already a warrant out on (at least) Cheney!

During World War II both Japanese troops and the Gestapo used water boarding as a method of torture. This included water boarding, by the method of binding or holding down the victim on his back, placing a cloth over his mouth and nose, and pouring water onto the cloth. Interrogation continued during the torture, with the interrogators beating the victim if he did not reply and the victim swallowing water if he opened his mouth to answer or breathe. When the victim could ingest no more water, the interrogators would beat or jump on his distended stomach.

That’s not what happened at Guantanamo.

      No soft tissue was damaged.
Not one Japanese soldier was ever tried, for just “ water boarding ”

Water boarding was listed along with all the other things they did to be tried.

Now the left and some on the right wants people to believe that the water boarding was the reason they were tried.
Read about the Japanese war crimes then compare that to US water boarding with doctors present and no soft tissue damage.

VerySeniorCitizen… “The USA was one of the original signatories of the International Court of Justice at The Hague. Why would we sign and be a party to something to which we didn’t intend to adhere?”

The International Court of Justice is the primary judicial organ of the United Nations. The United States accepts the court’s jurisdiction only on a case-by-case basis. Chapter XIV of the United Nations Charter authorizes the UN Security Council to enforce World Court rulings. However, such enforcement is subject to the veto power of the five permanent members of the Council. Of those five permanent member the US is on, thus veto power.

Again, The United States accepts the court’s jurisdiction only on a case-by-case basis.

Typical, oh so typical of these international outfits, funded mostly by U.S. dollars but controlled by tyranically minded regimes and/or influences. I never agreed with President George W. Bush’s policies regarding the prisoners of our ongoing War on Terror; I believed, and still believe, that his orders there jeopardize our Constitution. But I’m not ready to see him, or any other of our citizens, hauled off to some kangaroo court and let our outside enemies wreak vengeance on him. I do concede that this Mr. Bush was seeking the protection of the nation, and I regard the order and its results to be the consequences of pressure-induced stupidity, not criminal intent. Bush was not conspiring to become dictator of the U.S. and then, from there, of the world. Wish I could say the same of certain other characters at home and abroad.

And while they’re at it how about arresting all the thugs and global manipulators and nation destroyers at the U.N., NATO, the E.U., and the Hague? That might be worthwhile.

And then how about the CEOs of Fannie and Freddie?

Hey, and don’t stop there. How about cocaine-addicted I-didn’t-have-sex-with-that-girl Bill Clinton for his bombing of the Serbs in Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia. How about going after him too?

Prior to the American Revolution, the conclusion of a war by the victorious was in the 1700′s to round up and KILL anybody who had been in opposition to the victorious to make sure their ideas could not come about again. Before that, in the really dark ages of humanity, the victorious took the young boy’s and young girls. Raped the young girls to make more young boy’s to indoctrinate into their philosophy and they KILLED EVERYONE ELSE.

America brought real civilization to this planet. Fought back and won two world wars and well, snot’s Woodrow Wilson was in charge back then and punished them financially, but, overall, after World War II America rebuilt every nation and never took a thing. Were there atrocities associated with real war? I’m sure of it. Let one of the liberals be in a blood bath trench or on Omaha Beach like two of my uncles who survived and they would be cringing in a corner and actually “praying” for some good person to come and save them. I’d like to leave them curled up in the fetal position in their poopy filled pants and not care. It’s not in my Christian nature to do so. I just wish they would figure out just how bad things were, how great things have become, and how the folks they align themselves with are willing to bring it way back in time.

Just when I think that nothing will shock me some ridiculous breaking news. Bush may have had his faults but I believe that we were safer under his watch. Obama would never have been able to take credit for the killing of Osama Bin Laden if it had not been for the Bush administrations policies. Since when to terrorist get rewarded for the 911 attack on our soil? If memory serves me they were responsible for beheadings, and far worse torture than the US. Our special forces are waterboarded for training so I don’t see how it is a crime to begin with. I hope this group tries , and when they do it will unleash an unexpected wrath from the American Patriots who love their country and remember that day in history on 911.

I think that it’s no coincidence that this is happening now, given the global protests and the lefties wanting to punish bush, the banks the rich etc….

Amnesty International has no problem when foreign dictators kill their citizens and anyone else. They like the Syrian President, Iranian President, Hamas, and any other terrorist organization. They have a problem with President Bush protecting America using all legal means, whether they were tasteful or not. Let’s waterboard Amnesty International!

The thing about a frog in a frying-pan is that if you throw a frog into a hot frying-pan (before you turn up the heat slowly) it will jump out but not before the frogs belly will become “numb” to any rapid increases in heat thereafter when you put it back in the frying-pan. Therefore, if you raise taxation in the early 1990′s to 90% then the people become numb to 50%. Therefore if you place a President in the White House who is extreme, then the people of a nation will become numb to extreme leaders. I often wonder why Colin Powell didn’t run for President when he was considering his own candidacy? Therefore while President Obama appears to be a 90% tyrant, America will have become numb to the coming 50% tyrant. These are the things I, even I wonder.

Correction: taxation at 90% in the early 1900′s, not 1990′s.

Seriously. Radical Islam is making great strides. Hopefully it won’t come to it, but if it does and the radicals take over, the first useful idiots to be offed with their heads will be folks like Neve. He might not like the new treatment. Won’t fit in with his “ethical” stance. He would be begging for a strong USA at that point. Just ask the folks in Europe now.

Its interesting with the enhanced interrogation methods that when any other nation uses them, the Anmesty international decries the usage yet never calls for war crimes. Yet Bush Jr uses them, and he is suddenly a war criminal.

Arrest those war criminals Bush and Cheney, Obama and Biden.

“Those other folks do it too” is not a sufficient excuse for breaking the law.

“Bush got away with it, so I should too” is not sufficient either.

“I didn’t prosecute you, so don’t prosecute me” is not going to work either.

People like you just never get it.
We are supposed to represent something better than that. We are the good guys. We DO NOT torture. Sure we have friends that do and we will gladly get you a one way ticket to them, but we do not dirty ourselves with it. We are above and beyond it.
Plus the field manual on interrogation was developed over decades to get results. Give me two cots, some duct tape, and control over that person‘s food and I’ll break someone in 2 days.

And let me tell you how awesome it is being a soldier and having this stuff come out. You are endlessly drilled with ethics and the Code of Conduct; and then the suits in DC just decide to throw it all away because they watched too many movies.
