An Impending ‘Zombie Apocalypse?’ A Warning From the CDC

As seen yesterday on our blog, the CDC published a creative blog post of their own that has successfully nabbed some media — and public — attention. The post, a tongue-in-cheek guide to surviving a potential zombie attack, is intended to actually educate citizens regarding the proper steps to take in the event of a catastrophic emergency. According to FOXNews.com:
The post, written by Assistant Surgeon General Ali Khan, instructs readers how to prepare for “flesh-eating zombies” much like how they appeared in Hollywood hits like “Night of the Living Dead” and video games like Resident Evil. Perhaps surprisingly, the same steps you’d take in preparation for an onslaught of ravenous monsters are similar to those suggested in advance of a hurricane or pandemic.
Sure, on the surface it seems a bit ridiculous, but, the CDC claims that the zombie blog post quickly became the most popular article on the site. Thus, people are reading it and potentially taking away some valuable information. CDC spokesman Dave Daigle said, “The idea is we‘re reaching an audience or a segment we’d never reach with typical messages.” Below, see a screen shot from the CDC blog post:
Aside from providing a brief history of zombies, the post begs the question “So what do you need to do before zombies…or hurricanes or pandemics for example, actually happen?” Aside from providing some very practical tips on disaster preparedness, the CDC comforts readers with the following:
If zombies did start roaming the streets, CDC would conduct an investigation much like any other disease outbreak. CDC would provide technical assistance to cities, states, or international partners dealing with a zombie infestation. This assistance might include consultation, lab testing and analysis, patient management and care, tracking of contacts, and infection control (including isolation and quarantine).
Glad to know we’re in good hands (pending a zombie “outbreak”).

Claire McCaskill (Dem.- MO) said if there was a government shutdown due to a lack of a continuing budget resolution, people would die because cancer researchers would not be finding cures. It was all kids in their teens and twenties. I sat back and chuckled.
In my area, The Walmart right next to the costco the Lowe’s, the river, the airport, and the military base seems to be the preferred “holdout” for our zombie apocolypse.
When I was young we got worked up over Red Dawn.
Now I just worry about my pharmacy being open.
Give the administration credit for tapping into this.

Not once did he ever go out of “character” describing how each major power, type of government, conservative, liberal, Republican and Democrat would react and interact with zombies.
From taking their side (like a PETA type situation), to using them as weapons on another country, parachute in a few thousand zombies to raise havoc in the ME…and so on. Very interesting interview.

You wouldn’t necessarily turn into a Zombie if you inhale this stuff but you would go mad, and if enough people in your hood inhaled it, things might get really scary. “Omega Man” was a much better movie (in my opinion) because it was much more believable. The makers used real people to convey the message and horror of biological warfare.
The makers of “I am legend” used too much cgi (zombies) which diminished it’s aspect human intensity.
I first saw Omega Man when I was 7 with my parents and it made me concerned about March 1975 in a “kid logic” sort of way and literally scared the poop out of me. In comparison, my 9 year old nephew saw I am Legend and lost interest after the first 5 minutes in favor of his Nintendo DSi…….basically because it wasn’t very scary to him.
I’d like to add that Heston and Smith are both great actors in their own right.

I have a copy of the book, while it varies from the movie with Wil Smith, it is quite good reading and I have come to prefer it to the film itself for some levels of detail. Recommended reading for anyone who can obtain a copy of it.

If you want to assume the person took a full 8-hr day to write and research, that’d be – what – tops $1,200. And that’s being generous and assuming the writer has a salary over 250K.

And guess what? The 4th Amendment is gone. You can’t refuse to allow them in, they’re gonna use a no-knock warrant, they’re gonna be watching you through your walls, and they’re gonna pump you full of lead or drag you off to a FEMA Civilian Labor Camp to pay off the National Debt.
