‘An Insult to Islam’: Pakistani Acid Attack Victim Describes Horrific Anti-Christian Assault That Nearly Killed Her

Julie Aftab is only 26-years-old, but she’s seen more trauma and tragedy than most individuals her age. Ten years ago, while she was living in Pakistan and working as an operator in a tiny office, she was brutally attacked with acid. The incident left her with lasting scars and in need of intense medical treatment. Today, she is rebuilding her life in Houston, Texas, and speaking out about the horror she endured.

In a recent interview with The Houston Chronicle, Aftab recounts the events that led to the vicious assault she faced at the tender age of 16. One day, while she was working at an office in Pakistan, she recalls a man coming in and asking if she was a Christian (he noticed a cross necklace she was wearing). When she responded “yes,” he began to yell at her, claiming that she was hell-bound for refusing to embrace Islam.

Eventually, the man left — but he came back less than an hour later to up the ante on his attacks. He promptly threw a bottle of battery acid on the teenager, burning her face and body instantly. When she tried to escape, a second man grabbed her her and poured the dangerous substance down her throat.

In a description reported by The Daily Mail, Aftab’s teeth began to fall out and her esophagus was substantially burned. As she sought help in the streets outside of the office, a woman poured water over her and took her to the hospital. But the bizarre and traumatic experience didn’t end there. When she arrived for treatment, doctors refused to help her — because she was a Christian.

“They all turned against me,” she told the Houston Chronicle. “Even the people who took me to the hospital. They told the doctor they were going to set the hospital on fire if they treated me.”

Inevitably, the hospital turned her away and, as her family desperately sought treatment for her, others did as well. Finally, a hospital agreed to treat her; the damage to her body was extensive. Aftab couldn’t speak or move her arms, she was missing an eye and eyelids and the majority of her esophagus was burned. The attack was so bad that her teeth could be seen through the space where her cheek once resided.

Doctors thought the young woman was bound to die, but she survived after nearly one year in the hospital. But her survival — seeing as she was an open Christian who denied Islam — was lamented by many. The Chronicle continues:

Aftab quickly learned that in her old neighborhood, she was a pariah. Her mutilated face was plastered on the news, associated with insulting Islam. Her family was persecuted, and their house was burned down.

“They wanted to hang me,” she said. “They thought it would be an insult to Islam if I lived.”

Aftab and her parents went to a nondenominational bishop in Pakistan, who said he would try to help. He took her in, contacted Shriners Hospitals for Children, and arranged for her treatment in Houston.

He gave her one piece of advice before she left Pakistan in 2004: “If you forgive them,” he said, “your wound will heal without any medication. You can heal from the inside out.”

Today, she lives on and is rebuilding the pieces of her life that were taken away from her so savagely. Initially, she was angry, wondering why God would allow such a horrific event to happen to her. Today, she has learned to forgive.

Upon arriving in Texas, the Ervin family, locals who had heard about her plight, took her in and taught her English. Doctors, too, pitched in on donated time to reconstruct her face and to provide the treatment she needs. Today, she is filled with thanksgiving and gratefulness.

“Maybe those doctors don’t know what they did. Maybe they think they just did their jobs,” Aftab told the Chronicle. “But for me, they gave me a life.”

Now, she calls her scars “my jewel, my gift from God.” This month, she is scheduled to take her citizenship test and she is continuing her studies as an accounting major at the University of Houston-Clear Lake — truly a story of triumph over tragedy.

Ok, I could be wrong but I thought they and you prayed to the god of Abraham…same god, different religion? Of course being an atheist I‘m certainly no expert on god and maybe someone could explain where I’m wrong. I understand that you hate their religion, I’m no fan of it either, but I was under the impression that you all have the same god.

No need to insult each other like five year olds please. @Conservative-Atheist, you are partially right. It is the God of Abraham, but we believe that He call us to use violence only in self-defense, while the Muslims believe that He calls them to Jihad and to convert all nonbelievers by the sword.

Indeed, while all three Abrahamic faiths claim to worship the same God, each one claims a different set of attributes for this God. To say that Christians, Jews and Muslims all worship the same diety is only partially correct, since we often define God by His attributes. As a clear example, Judaism and Christianity accept the notion of the sabbath, that God rested on the seventh day of creation, and therefore, we do as well. Islam holds that Allah never rests. Therefore, there is no day of rest, or sabbath, in Islam. Friday is a day of communal prayer and study, but completely different from the concept of a sabbath. There are dozens of other examples to support this. I hope this clears up the arguement a bit.

The goal of this story is not to perpetuate hate although on its face it would tend to lead one in that general direction. STOP! God will deal with these people! Vengeance is mine saith the Lord! In the mean time however he gave us laws to uphold and hold murderers, rapist, thieves accountable…thats if we are willing. The last time evil abounded was before the law of Moses and God wiped those people out except for Noah and his family. He then later gave us the Law so that we would govern ourselves and check evil. We are failing in this regard and so the blame goes onto Satan! The people have been lied to and misled! Just like people in this country have been decieved some not even knowing it. This is where mercy comes in! Pray for those folks in Muslims countries. This girl is just one example of someone who came to the Father and out of the Satanic lie of Islam. There are more to be saved. Nuke them? Not so fast!

It is repulsive that EVERYTHING in this country is seen through this color prism. That may sound Ironic when we are talking about Muslims and as much as I do not like and even abhor their customs, on an individual level, they are people and many of them are just people trying to live their live (their soul is up to God)and it is up to Christians and non-Christian Americans to provide a good example without being “holier than thou”. The village where this happened should be eliminated. Every mosque or eman who taught where the men prayed or was taught should be dipped into acid up to the hips so they would have to pee out of their @ss and drag that @ss around on the ground. Every home in the village should be raised. Every acre surrounding this place should be made unliveable for 200 years.

It should then be pointed out to these madmen that only through the love of God was the people spared. These actions may get through the sick minds this “religion” makes. Oh, also, every Koran in that village should be put into a barrel of pig fat, sealed, and buried under the remains of the village.

Ten mosques destroyed for every non-islam house of worship destroyed. Ten emans or leaders that agree with these actions killed for every non-islam civilian killed by these zealots. For every honor killing, the emans that taught the man/men who did it should also be killed. We might then get the remainder to actually practice the peaceful part of islam – if you can find any.

It is my deepest belief that God, however we call him, calls us to two basic things: Love God, love each other. If you do these things, then you abide in the heart of God. Religion develops to help answer the need to do those two things. Jesus was sent to us to help direct us and bring us into God’s light, and for that he died because we could not fulfill God’s call.

Any religion can be adulterated to violence against any who do not see God and the religion they follow as they do. It happens in Christianity, it happens in Islam. Fortunately, it is far less so in Christianity than in Islam where the powerful have overwhelmingly pushed their exclusive understanding of God so forcefully and violently.

However, where there is life, there is God, and there is hope. We should stand for who we are, defend ourselves, but not destroy a people because the majority spew such hatred that they would see us also eradicated. When we do that, we reduce ourselves to their level, and I cannot think that God would wish us to do that. Rather we should seek those who are Godly Islamist with hope that someday they can turn their fellow Islamist around, and possibly, just possibly, also find the Light of Jesus who is our savior.

I believe in the hope of salvation for all.

So you also know, I am a Christian, a veteran, from a family of veterans that date back over a 100 years. I love my country, I have faith that we can restore our country and return to the path that God h

What follows is that I believe that we can return our country to the path God set for us. We are a nation blessed above all others, but it is in a Christian faith and understanding of God.

Bottom line, yes, there are a majority of Islamist who would kill us, and in the words from a favorite TV series, “if somebody tries to kill you, you kill them first”. BUT you don’t kill the hateful person across the ocean because they want to kill you, but do not act on that hate.)

It has a lot to do with culture. The Koran justifies the cultural and traditional subjugation of people in general. These cultures still have a ‘class’ system, women and of course non-Muslims and most assuredly…Jews…are at the bottom rung. I pray for these people with all my heart and try to guard my soul against hate. It is soooo easy to hate them all for their barbarism and ignorance, but like I said before, I have to look at them individually, pray for them, and love them regardless. Love their actions…HELL no, but MY God calls me to LOVE and that is what I pray for, to forgive and love. I have never laid my eyes on my nephew because of this type of culture and religion and that is very hard for me, still, I have asked God to take the hate from my heart because I can’t do it on my own! For the people who want to nuke them back to oblivion…I hear you! But that is for God to decide.

There will never be peace in the world, with muslims in the same world, did you hear now the “clerics’” are now calling for the descruction of the pyramids in Edgypt, the world should unite and remove them all from the face of the earth.

And the Christians should be persecuted, There are so many groups–all of them really–that keep “siding” AGAINST America & Christians AND our country’s actual heritage…without seeing that they themselves (&/or their cause) would be among the first people to go, Anybody out there (Christian/Bible haters etc.) , that can explain their reasoning? If, for instance, your cause is women’s rights–how CAN you embrace Islam–see The Saudis for a start–the taliban–and you say what? Never seen that defended–would be interesting, I think. (GOOD MOVIE–Wayne&Hepburn) having PC problems–the last time–only bits & pieces of my post went through–if that happens again, let me apologize in advanced to all that will be even MORE offended, than if it comes in as I sent it.

I’m just waiting for the war to start.

Why fear war? During the Clinton era we had General Janet Reno. Now we have General Janet Napolitano. Her DHS forced agent Terry to use bean bags against AK 47 toting, border crossing drug smugglers / robbers.

General Janet Napolitano is a Democrat. They are the smartest people in the world. We should be safe.
