An Ugly High School Baseball Brawl Broke Out, and Even Parents Stormed the Field

Sports brawls are common in hockey and even occasionally in professional baseball. But in high school JV baseball? A team from Yuba City, Calif. shows it can be done.
During a heated game between the Yuba City Honkers (in yellow) and Del Campo, things got out of hand when the Yuba City pitcher had enough of the opposing first base coach and decided to hurl a ball at him from the mound. Then all hell broke loose, with players throwing punches, coaches screaming, and even parents storming the field.
Video of the incident picks up just as the pitcher storms the coach and the benches clear. But as Deadspin notes, everyone looks bad:
On the one hand, you have the Yuba City junior varsity players (in yellow) sucker-punching opposing players and then threatening coaches as their parents storm the field in protest. On the other hand, you have the Del Campo parents yelling things like “Go back to your farmland!” Even the giggly videographer seems a little too jazzed about getting this footage uploaded.
See for yourself (content warning for language):
The Appeal-Democrat describes what happened:
According to sources, both teams had been “jawing” at each other throughout the game. But the melee occurred in the sixth inning after the Del Campo first base coach made comments to the Yuba City dugout and pitcher Jaylon Deas. Deas then turned and threw the ball from the mound at the coach. The ball missed the coach, but Deas charged the coach and benches cleared.
The game was tied 3-3, before it was called.
Yuba City cancelled the rest of its games for the week after the Monday incident and stiff penalties are expected.

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 10:44amMy son was a high school football player and I told him, from my experience, that if a fight broke out on the field, do not take off your head gear. As it happened, his team was playing a very hot contested game against a team from south Louisiana. An opposing player punched one of our running backs that emptied both benches. I just watched while they fought and parents from both sides emptied the stands. The parents did not join the ruckus, they were pulling their boys apart trying to stop the fight. The parents were successful and the game continued. To tell the truth, it added a little more excitement to the game. The teams did not attack the refs nor the coaches. The parents were needed to pull 44 players apart, 6 or 8 people could not have done it alone. No one got hurt because of all the gear the players wear. I don’t remeber which team won, however, I do remember that the parents did not attack the kids, the officials, nor the coaches. This vid is unbelievable.

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 5:22pmDidnt LSU and Tulane have a “bleacher clearing” brawl just about every year they played each other? That’s a Cajun thing, right?
Report Post »Belzar
Posted on April 5, 2012 at 10:26amLSU vs Tulane has always been a hot rivalry. I don’t remember a game where the stands emptied onto the field to fight but do remember some games where the fans tore down metal goal post after a win against different teams. My son in law helped wield a couple of them back together. LSU/Tulane discontinued playing each other because Tulane would get blown away. Graduates from the two schools would challenge each other based on the winning score and the loser would have to put on a ridiculous costume in their school colors while pushing the winner in a wheelbarrow down a busy street for all to see .. etc.

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 10:53amNope, what is good for the goose is good for the gander. They should be charged with assault, likely most of them are underage however. The soccer girl was of age though so she’s in deeper doo doo.. Likely this video will be excellent evidence for both civil and schoolastic authorities to pick out who are the aggressors. Personally, I’d ban both teams from play for the remainder of the season.

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 10:23amThis is pathetic, all the adults who can’t even refrain from swearing. All the kids are seeing that they aren’t very mature, either, and it’s distressing to a young person to see that. I remember seeing things like this, sort of, and it made me feel like, wow, whos’s in charge of this world. I presumed the adults were.

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 10:14amWhen our kids were in sports, we had some problems with the parents but nothing as bad as this. People wonder why we have so many that are messed up — usually has to do with their parents/upbringing….surprise, surpirse. The “family” has been going down the tubes for a very long time. Founders said if we didn’t keep a nation that is mostly “moral”, the Republic couldn’t succeed and would deterioriate & fail – so….here we are…right at the edge of the cliff………..

I loved the kid’s slightly fearful comment “Holy sh it, what is that?”
The report is not exactly correct. While there was “jawing”, the coach told the pitcher’s mother to shut up and the kid threw the ball at him.
I mentioned the large woman’s name and the Blaze pulled the post (I assume that’s why they did). It doesn’t matter. Who knows, perhaps a relative saw it…
