Angle to Hispanic Students: ‘You Look a Little More Asian to Me’

LAS VEGAS (The Blaze/AP) — Nevada U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle is seen in a new video making an unusual comment about race, telling a group of Hispanic students that some of them look “a little more Asian.”

In a meeting with Hispanic students Friday, Angle defended campaign ads that lean on images of dark-skinned men to blast rival Harry Reid’s record on illegal immigration. She claims she didn’t know the people in the TV spots were Hispanic.

A new video of the meeting released by the Las Vegas Sun on Monday shows the Republican candidate arguing that it is difficult to pinpoint someone’s race.

She tells the Hispanic students that some of the students look “a little more Asian” and says she herself has been called Nevada’s first Asian legislator. Angle is white:

Transcript via the Las Vegas Sun:

So that’s what we want is a secure and sovereign nation and, you know, I don’t know that all of you are Latino. Some of you look a little more Asian to me. I don’t know that. [Note: it's the Hispanic Student Union. The whole room is Hispanic teenagers.] What we know, what we know about ourselves is that we are a melting pot in this country. My grandchildren are evidence of that. I’m evidence of that. I’ve been called the first Asian legislator in our Nevada State Assembly.

Sun Reporter Jon Ralston says he has “no idea what she is talking about” regarding the Asian legislator comment. However, as Angle seems to be making the point that it is easy to confuse people’s looks with their ethnicity, she could be commenting that others have said she looks like an Asian.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I think Sharron Angle’s point was you cannot always identify race by appearance which is true.

Race also should not be a pony to be ridden by hate monger liberals at every turn, anymore anything the liberals disagree with is racist, they need to give it a rest.

I often wondered how the divide and conquer democrats came to the conclusion Mexicans are a race to begin with.

IMO they certainly are not since their are only three races in the world, Caucasian, Asian and *****.

Mexican Hispanics are Caucasian a mixture that in most cases includes Spanish and native central American Indian.

Get race out of politics period.

The #1 issue for me as an American of Hispanic origin is AMNESTY. No way, no how. If Conservatives cave on this issue and give amnesty to the illegal invaders, they will never get my support again.

Let immigrants come through the front door like I did, we are a nation of laws! I am sick and tired of Republicans caving to socialist scumbags like “La Raza.” They do not speak for me!

God bless America, the best country in the world. Proud to be a naturalized citizen for over a decade now. It is one of the best things to ever happen to me, right below the birth of my son.

It’s not the tea party putting up morons, it’s the way the MSM portray these people as idiots. They are NOT. They are average Americans trying to make a difference. The elite politicians are so ensconced in their various offices that it is going to take a miracle to get them out — they are going to see to it — and if that means they have to totally destroy the credibility of good, concerned citizens who just want to see their country run better, then so be it. They don’t really care about America. The elites just want to maintain their status and they will stoop to any level to do it. Sharon Angle is a good woman who wants to make a difference. Harry Reid is doing everything he can to make sure that doesn‘t happen and he doesn’t CARE if it is moral, ethical, or honest. He‘s a disgrace and I can’t wait to see him lose.

Politicians are so mindful of being politically correct that they end up sounding plum stupid, especially conservatives. You could hear those in this gathering trying to work up indignation at being called “Asian.” (I don‘t really know what’s so offensive about that as I am Mexican American and I’ve been told that I look like an Indian, Iranian and an idiot.)
You have here a crowd of kids, who more than likely don’t have enough sense to come in out of the rain, not because they are Mexican American but because they’re kids, who came into this meeting influenced by the liberal one world socialist communistic anti-American factions, looking for someone or something to point their racist fingers at in blame for all the evils of capitalism and success in America. All the while they blame the Tea Party protesters for bigotry they themselves are the prime example of successful bigots. Although I’m not a big proponent of Dr. Martin Luther King he longed for the day that our children would not be judged by the color of their skin but the content of their character. The liberals are good about pretending that this is their creed while teaching their children that conservatives are incapable of being anything but lily white former slave owners who owe reparations to the long past relatives of slaves.

Stop it! We need to have the common sense to be color blind and the wisdom to stick to the issues in spite of the provocations of those attempting to suffocate our Constitutional freedoms in trade for the chains of Chairman Mao and his murderous hordes. These are the battle lines. We must define them eloquently and defend them sacrificially.

American of Cuban origin here, I am so tired of the racial card Democrats pull all the time, and for a Republican to be playing the racial card (as seen in this video) it’s very disappointing. Let’s here more about the real issues, and less about race, please!!! We are all Americans.

Second, if RINO Republicans try to support Amnesty, you will loose the support of Conservative Americans of Hispanic origin, such as the Cuban community here. You’d be surprised how many legal Hispanics do not want amnesty. All you will do by supporting Amnesty is to make Conservative Hispanics run away, and you’ll be left with 0% Hispanic support, because the “La Raza” socialist scum will not vote Conservative.

Sad but true we live in such a world when I would just say if they don’t like it screw them. However, I do not care about political correctness but SHE is the one running on the ballot. Dumb thing to say, she has to think smarter on her feet than that in this kind of world.

Actually Angle is correct in her observation. What she is pointing out is that just by looking at someone features, it might be difficult to determine what kind of ancestry they have. A lot of Latinos have Malay roots. A big number of Southeast Asians have Malay roots as well. While the audience may be tagged as Hispanic Student Union, they could have Malay roots. Just by looking at them they may look Asian. It is not an issue so maybe this does not belong in the “news” section. Seems to me that whoever is trying to sell this bit is trying to portray something that it is not.

See, I actually read stuff. So I have come across articles referencing studies of people who go to Tea Parties, who self-report educational attainment, income and wealth. Assuming that they are not all liars or lie more than the average person, people in the Tea Party movement apparently have higher educational attainment, income and wealth than the average American. Apparently, you are not part of that group–or are at least skewing the first of those averages down…

It would be inconceivable to think that some asian blood would not be in the native populations from Mexico. I have seen Mexicans with almond shaped eyes and lighter skin that looked to be at least partially asian. One of my friends and her late husband are from India. Their two sons were born here and are now in college. However, they speak Hindi and regularly visit family in India. The youngest was visiting a college friend in Texas. As they were leaving a restaurant one night, a fight was underway in the parking lot. The next thing anyone knew, Sanjay was thrown up against a police cruiser, handcuffed and taken to headquarters. It wasn‘t until his buddy and the cashier at the restaurant showed up at police headquarters that anyone bothered to check his license or realize he wasn’t Hispanic. The officers apologized and said that in a poorly lit parking lot with an ongoing altercation, they mistook him for one of the combatants.

So, I can easily understand what Sharon Angle was trying to convey.
