Angry Mob Torches Obama Effigy in Day Three of Koran-Burning Protests

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan protests against the burning of a Quran in Florida entered a third day with a demonstrations in the south and east Sunday, while the Taliban called on people to rise up, blaming government forces for any violence.

The desecration at a small U.S. church has outraged Muslims worldwide, and in Afghanistan many of the demonstrations have turned into deadly riots. Protests in the north and south in recent days have killed 20 people.

In southern Kandahar city on Sunday, hundreds took to the streets for the second day in a row, and hospital officials said 20 people were hurt in skirmishes between police and demonstrators. On Saturday, nine people were killed and 80 injured when a protest turned into a riot.

At least two wounded police officers and 18 civilians had been brought into city hospitals, said Qayum Pokhla the provincial health director.

A morning protest in Jalalabad city was peaceful, with hundreds of people blocking a main highway for three hours, shouting for U.S. troops to leave and burning an effigy of President Barack Obama before dispersing, according to an Associated Press photographer at the scene.

A similar protest in eastern Parwan province blocked a main highway with burning tires for about an hour, with more than 1,000 people protesting against the desecration of the Quran, said provincial police chief Sher Ahmad Maladani. He said there was no violence.

The violence started Friday when demonstrators stormed a U.N. compound in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, killing 11 people including seven foreign U.N. employees.

The Taliban said in a statement emailed to media outlets that the U.S. and other Western countries have wrongly excused the burning a Quran by the pastor of a Florida church on March 20 as freedom of speech and that Afghans “cannot accept this un-Islamic act.”

NATO officials re-iterated their condemnation of the Quran burning in an apparent attempt to quell the rising anger.

“We condemn, in particular, the action of an individual in the United States who recently burned the Holy Quran,” said the statement issued by military commander Gen. David Petraeus and the top NATO civilian representative in Afghanistan, Mark Sedwill.

“We further hope the Afghan people understand that the actions of a small number of individuals, who have been extremely disrespectful to the Holy Quran, are not representative of any of the countries of the international community who are in Afghanistan to help the Afghan people,” the statement said.

On Saturday, U.S. President Barack Obama extended his condolences to the families of those killed by the protesters and said desecration of the Quran “is an act of extreme intolerance and bigotry.” But he said that does not justify attacking and killing innocent people, calling it “outrageous and an affront to human decency and dignity.”

The Taliban statement said that those killed during the protests were unarmed demonstrators.

“Afghan forces under the order of the foreign forces attacked unarmed people during the protests, killing them and arresting some, saying there were armed people among these protesters, which was not true,” the statement said.

Sher Jan Durani, a spokesman for the government of northern Balkh province, where the first riots occurred, said there were multiple armed men among the more than 20 arrested. Afghan authorities suspect insurgents infiltrated the mob.

In Kandahar, officials said 17 people, including seven armed men, have been arrested.

The protests come at a critical juncture as the U.S.-led coalition gears up for an insurgent spring offensive and a summer withdrawal of some troops, and with Afghanistan‘s mercurial president increasingly questioning international motives and NATO’s military strategy.

We have a God-given right to offend and be offended. Burning a bible or a Koran wouldn’t turn most people’s head here. It may anger them as they pass the protester while on the way to the mall, but Americans don’t run home and start sharpening their cutlery.

      Someone needs to get thru to these illiterate hordes and inform them that the Quran is not the word of God. It has been refined (somewhat) over the centuries but is still the ranting’s of Muhammad who claims these word came to him thru the angel Gabriel as revelations. Always keep in mind who Muhammad was, warlord, criminal, rapist, pedophile and lunatic. So nice book these Muslims have…….

      Any objective research on Muhammad shows what a twisted evil person he really was. From his 27 war campaigns to the rape and torture of his own people and followers, the Quran is just bits and pieces from quotes of Muhammad and passages he borrowed from the Torah and Bible and then twisted those to suet his cause.

      The book should be burnt, Islam is not a religion it’s a cult plain and simple.

      Radical Islam is a bulging boil on the face humanity. This preacher is attempting to lance it. If he succeeds it will run the pus of blind intolerance for awhile. It will be messy and painful The questions is, over time will it be healing through it exposure to the light, or will it cause a greater infection and do serious injury to its host? No one knows.

      One thing’s for sure. This preacher is no doctor, so a higher physician will be ultimately be needed for healing to take place.

      I wonder if Christians would act this way if the bible was burned, oh wait Hitler burned books in Germany and there was no uprising by the Jihadists at that time. They even welcomed the Germans into their countries.

      Americans burn the flag all the time and there are not riots in the streets where people are killed. If I read the story correctly, the Taliban used the riots on day one to actually attack the UN compound so you could say that the Taliban Offensive has begun. And you find it amazing on how the word of mouth news-wires work faster than the electronic ones in the west and they have more effect.

      I think it is time we left that region to its backward ways and let Karzai hang in the wind and see how long his Gov’t and wealth last.

      The recent pro-union protesters and the national tea parties are exactly the same – and I am very proud of all of these patriotic souls. I agree equally with the FOX and MSNBC pundits who describe them. I guarantee you no Buddhist has ever killed someone out of revenge.

      These people have just used America. They want help. But do they respect what we believe in? No. I just hate that Rev. Jones was not a woman. These crazy people hate women. I think if we are going to furnish any middle east country with bombs to kill these radicals…….we should have women pilots………they use women. A few years ago I did some volunteer work at a save a life clinic, a Muslim couple came in for her to get tested for pregnancy. He was attending the Univ. to get his phd. She did not say one word. He on the other hand was very rude. He came to a “free” clinic. In exchange for the free medical care we get to ask some questions. I have NEVER in my life witnessed anyone so mean. …………………..put the ladies in the planes……….they are “uncivil”

If it can make them unhappy for a time, do it again …………it is kind of comical to see them act like nuts. Do you think they eat human? …………. I said “you see son, we work and money is taken from our salaries to pay our servants so to speak, and now that we can’t they are mad.” They are acting like you would have had we spoiled you for years with things that we could not afford and then taken it away. You see son, it should never have got like this, but we had politicians and union leaders who wanted something so they promised something………….now it has got too big. That is why they are screaming………..“I want what was promised me” Well, so do I …….I would like to have it all too…………The few people who are working can’t support the load any longer.
