Angry Obama Responds to Dem Critics on Tax Compromise

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — Facing strong Democratic criticism, President Barack Obama is crisply defending concessions he made to Republicans as part of a tax-cut compromise.

The president spoke Tuesday at a news conference as the top Democrats in Congress signaled they will seek changes in the agreement.

He said he is “happy to be tested” by Republicans next year, but responded to Democratic critics by saying that if they held out for for the leftist position on every issue nothing would get done. He also said that while the American people agreed with his position Republicans did not.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says the deal is not yet completed and that “more work” needs to be done. Reid met earlier with Vice President Joe Biden and members of the Democratic rank-and-file.

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D., N.J.) is not pleased with the proposed tax deal. “I don’t think it’s a fair deal,” he told reporters outside the Senate chamber. “I think a ransom was paid, and it was a very high price.”

“I had a very good business career,” he added, “and I don’t give a damn about a tax cut.”

Across the Capitol, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a statement saying that discussions with the president and the Democratic caucus will continue in the days ahead.

“It’s progress, ” Sen. Jim DeMint (R., S.C.) told NRO, “we got the president to come more toward our side.”

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.

WASHINGTON (AP) – His tax cut compromise under Democratic attack, President Barack Obama set a news conference on short notice on Tuesday to sell the plan worked out in secret talks with Republicans over several days.

Several officials said the cost of the package could add $900 billion or more to the deficit over two years by extending tax cuts from the Bush era that are due to expire at year’s end, renewing jobless benefits through the end of 2011 and granting a one-year cut in Social Security taxes.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi, normally one of Obama’s staunchest allies, made plain her unhappiness with a statement that contained no commitment to help pass the plan. “We will continue discussions with the president and our caucus in the days ahead,” said the statement, issued 18 hours after the president made his announcement.

The administration mounted a full-scale defense of the agreement, saying it would pump billions into the economy at a time it is recovering from the worst recession in eight decades and unemployment stands at 9.8 percent.

Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut, a Democrat-turned-independent, urged support for the plan. “This tentative agreement is an example of Washington working across party lines to confront the challenges facing our nation,” he said.

But in public and private, Democrats expressed anger that Obama had bowed to Republican demands to extend the expiring tax cuts on the upper income and make additional concessions to the GOP on estate tax relief.

Vice President Joseph Biden spent part of his day in the Capitol, meeting first with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and then the party’s rank and file. House Democrats arranged a similar closed-door meeting for late in the day, but it was not known if Biden would attend.

Republican officials said the vice president had played a key role in negotiations on the deal, and had spoken often in recent days with GOP Senate Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

Biden also fielded complaints from Pelosi and other Democrats in a meeting Saturday night, and again on Monday at the White House before the president announced publicly he had agreed on a framework agreement with the GOP.

The liberal group MoveOn, which claims 5 million members, came out against the plan, saying the wealthiest Americans don’t need tax cuts that were scheduled to expire this month. “The president’s commitment to bipartisanship should not mean leaving principles behind,” MoveOn said.

But Biden urged congressional Democrats to quickly embrace the plan, saying Congress needs to move on to other issues before the Democrats lose control of the House in January. The president has made ratification of a new arms control treaty with Russia a top year-end priority.

Both houses must approve any tax bill.

In her statement, Pelosi said the compromise plan shows that Democrats want to help low- and middle-income workers while the GOP’s chief concern is the wealthiest Americans.

But others noted that Obama had abandoned a long-held position in fashioning the compromise.

Obama promised in his 2008 campaign – and many times since – that these breaks would be continued only for the middle-class. But some in his own party and liberal groups attacked the new tax plan, and even the Democratic leadership in Congress gave it a cool, noncommittal reception.

Besides holding current tax rates in place for all, the proposal would extend unemployment benefits and reduce payroll taxes for a year, which would help many lower-income Americans.

Obama has said that he still prefers to let the tax cuts expire for households earning more than $250,000 a year. Obama, while acknowledging Democratic unrest, agreed to extend all the tax breaks for two years, noting that Republicans wanted a permanent extension.

The emerging agreement includes tax breaks for businesses that the president said would contribute to the economy’s recovery from the worst recession in eight decades.

The proposed Social Security tax cut would apply to virtually every working American. For one year they would pay 4.2 percent of their income, instead of 6.2 percent, to the government retirement program, fattening U.S. paychecks by $120 billion in 2011.

Someone earning $40,000 a year would receive a $800 benefit, and a $70,000 earner would save $1,400, officials said. More than three-fourths of all Americans pay more in these so-called payroll taxes than in federal income taxes.

The White House said money from other sources would be shifted so the Social Security trust fund loses no revenue.

Obama said he reluctantly made another concession to Republicans, concerning the estate tax. It would tax estates worth more than $5 million at a rate of 35 percent, a GOP goal. Democrats favored a $3.5 million threshold, with a 45 percent tax on anything higher.

Obama’s willingness to compromise with Republicans comes a month after the GOP won resounding victories in congressional, gubernatorial and state legislative elections.

Associated Press writers Julie Pace and Alan Fram contributed to this report.

The very rich are already taxed and pay most of the taxes of the nation. Increase their taxes and they have the ability to take their business, money and leave the nations. Many of the very rich are on speaking terms with leaders across the world and already own property in other nations.
While developing nations are giving ‘tax holidays’ in order to attract the wealthiest Americans. President Obama is under the illusion that by raising the taxes on the wealthiest Americans these Americans will simply “obey” and pay.
They are already leaving high tax states to more tax friendly states and others have already opted to leaving this nation, adding to the unemployed after they move their business to foreign shores
Most wealthy Americans have created their wealth by their ingenuity, classic example being Bill Gates and through this ingenuity many jobs have been created. Obama wants to bite the only hand that still remains as a hope for private enterprise and ingenuity.

This president just becomes more incredible as the days pass. It’s like he begging to get something started, I pray for his personal safety. I know he’s to smart to make these “mistakes” with America- I am very suspicious of his intent. He is revising history in real time using the podium of the president as his editing pen. Bad moves Barry! At least if he was honest from the get go about who he really is- I could respect him. I might even respect the movement, even though I don’t agree with it.

This move should have been made PERMANENT (or, at leas until they decide to raise taxes the next time), and the rates should have been even lower. I’m still sick as hell that the majority of my 25% isn’t even covering all these unnecessary government workers who will be retiring soon. Next order of business is to eliminate ALL FEDERAL/STATE/LOCAL pensions or reduce by at least 90%. Even 10% is way, way more than any of my employers ever contributed to my 401k plan. Then, the federal workforce needs to be reduced by at least 25% immediately, with more cuts later on.

Entitlements ‘COST’ money, not tax cuts. Besides, NO TAX WAS CUT!!! The current rate was simply ‘extended’ for 2 years.’

Exactly! The government isn’t cutting taxes more, it is simply extending the previous cuts. It isn’t going to steal more money from people. It ISN‘T the government’s money! It is the money of the earners! Cut spending, like the Dept. of Education.

I am an independent consultant and business has been awful. I don’t get a penny of unemployment “insurance” … which is OK as I did not pay into the fund. HOWEVER – I am paying for all these extensions of benefits which is NOT OK. Why should I pay (via my bankrupt state borrowing fed funds) for up to 3 years of insurance for some individuals – how is this fair/reasonable/right?

They understand perfectly. It simply doesn’t fit their agenda. Did you notice that Sen. Lautenberg said that he “had” a very good business career? He has a much better one now being a mover and a shaker in the halls of Congress. He could not care less about your business. He, and the other Congresspersons, are only concerned with their “business”. The problem seems to be that we, the American people, look to Congress to SOLVE problems. However, they don’t see things that way. To them, WE are the problem. So they make more problems by trying to circumvent the Constitution. This is going to be a very long fight and we must never give in. I pray that your business does very well, BRER RABBIT. May God pour out His blessings upon you and your family and may good people always do the right thing.

I still think it’s baloney that we are using the phrase “tax cuts”. There was never any discussion about tax cuts. The discussion was entirely about extending the current tax rates or making the tax rates permanent. The extension of unemployment benefits just added to the deficit so we are still losing where it counts. The extension should have been paid out of stimulus money. Start cutting the budgets and sizes of departments across the board Mr. President if you want to save this republic…. or don’t you want to save this republic??

By leaving the tax as is, it is NOT costing or adding to the debt! Some people have heads thick as rocks in thinking it is adding to the debt. No, is doesn’t add to the debt. All it really does is not pick the pockets of anyone so they have more to spend. Don’t even think that it would have been put on the debt…the government see a dollar they spend five!

This is all a script and I’m afraid it may not be just the liberals playing the parts. Remember while a whining liberal is a sign that you’re doing something right, that is not the goal just a entertaining by product. We must be firm in sticking to our principles. THE GOOD: improves the d-crat socialists‘ beloved DEATH TAX and doesn’t raise taxes in an economy hobbled by the failed policies of the d-crat socialists – included NOT raising taxes on small business owners to encourage job creation.

THE STINKINGLY BAD: cut the 6.2 percent Social Security payroll tax by 2 percentage points next year (…economic insanity: take a BANKRUPT Social Security program and make it EVEN MORE BANKRUPT !)

THE HORRIBLY UGLY: massively increases the national debt and deficit to preserve a bundle of lunatic-left tax credits and giveaways, including the earned income tax credit, the child tax credit and an outrageous tax credit that helps pay college tuition and helping the creation of a “permanent” class of unemployed living off government welfare.. THE LEFT REPUDIATES MR. OBAMA?
Recently, the media has been filled with stories of the left repudiating President Obama. He is being condemned by the left because of his inability to stamp out the last remnants of individual liberty after almost 2 years in office. According to the news reports the left considers this incompetence. Ridiculous! The real underlying message is that if the left is dissatisfied with Mr. Obama, then he can’t be all that bad, can he? This is a rather transparent effort to convince the gullible that Mr. Obama is not the wannabe tyrant his actions show him to be.
Do not be duped by this media blitz. Every proposal that Mr. Obama has initiated is aimed at oppression of the individual, destruction of the remainder of our Capitalistic system and increasing the power of the wannabe tyrants.
As tyranny always begets poverty and despair that will certainly be the result of Mr. Obama’s proposals
This is just another example of the use of the “preponderance of propaganda”! The wannabe tyrants and their cronies are publicizing lies, half-truths and the irrelevant to avoid a discussion of the issues. Pay no attention to the smokescreen.
When the premise is false the only arguments that can be used are fear mongering, emotion, sarcasm, ridicule, attacking the messenger and misrepresentation of the facts (lying). Those who expect to reap huge profits from our misery caused by tyranny are experts at these tactics.
The only relevant issue is freedom or tyranny!!!! http://commonsense21c.com/

      @Troll

The difference being, in most cases (not all of course) we have history on our side to show them where their tactics lead. There is very little history on their side that shows that a peaceful society based on individual rights and liberty does anything except free the slaves, empower all individuals and create wealth for the common man.

Their biggest gripes with us, from those I encountered in college, was that not everybody got everything equally and there was strata in society as determined by one’s own ambition and skill. This is the crux of their complaints against liberty.

Of course, that criticism is easily refuted and countless examples of rising out of one’s circumstance exist in free societies. So one has to dig deeper.

And for me, it all reduced to envy and control. They hate that somebody can be better at something than them, they have severe issues with narcissism and cannot admit wrong, and they have an overriding need to control everything because, as mentioned, they cannot admit error ergo they are always right, ergo if we’re wrong they need to put us on the path they choose for us. This, I think, can be traced all the way back to Plato, the first “leftist”, who originated their world view of inferiors swirling around them that need to be controlled by a benevolent dictator.

I see far more debate and actual intellectual ferment (and ability to consider alternative thoughts as a non-threat) on the right and libertarian front than I’ve ever seen from any so called “intellectual” leftist group.

      Just my thoughts.

Yeah! They are the ones that always claim to be open to new ideas and change, but we all see how militant they get when things do not go their way. Which is another thing i just do not get…There are relatively few “progressives”, what, like 20% outside? Yet they control all the media and all the colleges…But how can the average American, Joe Sixpack, watch stuff like MSNBC and not see through all the anger and bitterness that marks the left? Why are average Americans buying into all the tea party/ GOP/ Palin…hate? Can they not see what is really happening? Of course I have Christian thoughts behind what is going on, but I am speaking secularly now. Cutting taxes doesn‘t ’cost’ anything! It‘s NOT the government’s money!!! It belongs to the taxpayer who willingly gives it to his elected representative government!!! Entitlements ‘COST’ money, not tax cuts. Besides, NO TAX WAS CUT!!! The current rate was simply ‘extended’ for 2 years.

No, government spending is going to drive up the debt. Taxes are stolen money, from me and other productive people, it is not the government’s first and they have to account for me having a bit more than others. Your not stealing my money doesn‘t mean that I’m responsible for your bad spending habits.

There are MANY spending cuts that SHOULD be made. Just ask one simple question when evaluating the worthiness of a bill: Does it PROTECT the right to Life, Liberty, and The Pursuit of Happiness without infinging on the same rights of another? That is the role of the Federal Government.

Obamacare. That is the primary driver of the record budget deficit projections. Then reduce and eventually eliminate social security, medicare and medicaid. After that, bring the troops home and reduce military spending, we‘re not the world’s policeman. Additionally, put a major law review in for all current, pending and proposed legislation requiring full documentation of Constitutional authority for the legislation, and the words “interstate trade” are not permitted as justification.

Most working families will tell you that people live according to their means. If they get a raise they simply spend more. When they want to finally get out of debt they need to sell of some junk and tighten the belt and spend less. Making more will rarely help, you only get out of debt by cutting back.

Government is the same, if not worse than the average family because it is NOT THEIR MONEY! They do not care, they can only spend, spend, spend…Raising taxes is not going to do a dang thing for the deficit! If anything it will only cause government to spend more and go even further into debt. You may buy into this shell game, for whatever reason, ****** bro, but you are being awful shortsighted. If/when the government ever gets serious about trying to reduce this deficit they will start some serious cutting back. I hope the new team coming in has the balls for it, it is looking promising…Maybe by 2012 we can start the real work. It will hurt us all, but we need to trim some serious fat. No more movies and dinner out for America…Not for a while…

Dog & Pony Show…they got you thinking you got the better of the deal!

Obama and the Republicans reached a deal to extend the current tax rates for two more years.

But what the statists are trying to sweep under the rug is that part of this “deal” is that the Republicans will agree to a continuing resolution to fund the government until September 30, 2011.

That means the Republicans are selling out to fund ObamaCare for at least the next ten months.

It’s vital you contact your senators immediately and DEMAND they blow up any shady deals to link extending the current tax rates to funding ObamaCare.

Your action is critical to busting up this deal to fund ObamaCare.

Absolutely true, American’s overwhelmingly voted in GOP & Tea Party candidates because we don’t agree with the out of control, tax and spend, nanny state that is the Dems wet dream.

The Right to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness is the foundation of America. The Socialist, Progressive, & Communist agendas can not be implemented without the devaluation of Life, the restriction or elimination of Liberty, and the forced pursuit of “shared sacrifice” by a passive public for the sole benefit of a political ruling class.

There is no common ground between the murderous scourge of these failed philosophies and the American ideal. No slight agreement between them can be made without diminishing the good that is America. Therefore no one who holds a firm belief in these Evil philosophies can carry out a Sworn Oath to Protect and Defend the Constitution of the United States of America and must be immediately expelled from public office. Anyone running for public office that promotes these Evils under any guise must be identified, vilified, & denied access to any of the halls of power in America.

you are right, konservative punk doesn’t get it. that money, we are borrowing from china, we will have to pay it back. so basically, its like, “we can pay for this now”, or “we can pay for this later, with interest”. either way, we are paying for this. i’d rather not borrow from china anymore than we have. When the fact is, that 1% of the country, owns 50% of the wealth, its obvious that the system is benefiting them, more than it is others. They don’t need the tax cut, save it for the working families.

Clive, it is you who does not get it. Do you really believe that the income derived from allowing the tax cuts to lapse on those making 250K or more would be used to pay down the deficit? Really? Why not try and figure out where the money they want to extend unemployment would come from instead? Why would you loot SS which is already in trouble?

The problem is you are swallowing the kool-aide they are serving you. You need to think for yourself, look at what is going on. You want to know something? I think it would be better if the Republicans did NOT compromise at this point and just allowed the tax cuts to expire. It would hurt us all, it would hurt the economy…But it would also critically damage this administration and we could ride it out for two years until we could get a real president and a congress that is willing to do what needs done. I think what is happening now is playing right into their hands. We do not need to make this compromise.

You want to quit borrowing from China? You want to get our economy back into shape? You want to start paying down this ridiculous deficit? And I do not mean “balancing the budget” like Clinton gets so many props for. A balanced budget does not mean debt free or even manageable. I am asking if you want to really start working on getting the deficit to a manageable level? Then you better wake up and start listening to what the folks in here are saying. You better start listening to the tea parties. You better figure out that the only way out is to suck it in and quit the spending…on ALL fronts!

The Government (unlike a standard American household) is unwilling to live within its means. When we don’t make enough to cover the bills, we cut out the excess. The Government on the other hand, just raises their “income” by forcefully extracting wealth from tax payers.
Let’s see. What should be cut? How about the Fed bailing out the EU? Lets see…. How about the job killing, wealth stealing Obama Care? Or how about the useless Dept of Education? Thats a biggie. I know! Cut off NPR, PBS and any of their affiliates. Here’s a good one! How about the 5 billion payout (yes that’s with a “B”) to black farmers? Hey, while we are on farms, lets look at the subsidies there. Lets cut the TSA in half and forbid it to be unionized. Speaking of which, can we get our money back from the GM unions and their pension “bailout”? What a scam that was. Oh yeah, a big payoff to “Big special interests” by the dems totaling in the billions.

Just a few quick ideas. I am sure that this group can come up with lots of good ones.

The first of my family arrived in this country in the early 1700′s. Almost every generation fought for this country- some making the ultimate sacrifice. My husband served in the army during the first Gulf war and then spent a year in Iraq in 05′ attached to an Apache unit for his employer.

I have been proud of my country my entire life (including the adult part). Growing up, my parents couldn’t offer much. What they taught me was patriotism, self reliance, and hope. I grew up crossing my right hand over my heart when reciting the pledge of allegiance and singing our national anthem. I know that our country’s motto is “In God We Trust” and was founded on Judaea/Christian principles. I have a framed copy of the US Constitution hanging in my home. Every word is held very dear. Frankly, Mr.President- I believe that I am more of an American than you. You might consider this the next time you decide to classify Republican’s as non-American’s simply because they disagree with the very policies that you intend to use to fundamentally transform the United States.

67% of Americans DO NOT WANT and extension for the top 2%. That’s what he meant. As in, People ( Yes, American people) said, to THIS question that they oppose the tax cut for the wealthy. The mid term elections are not a catch all for any and all future legislation. The fact of the matter is that the president knew that struggling Americans would be further damaged if the GOP were able to hold these cuts for everyone hostage. President Obama acted in a “good for the country” but “bad for me politically” manner. Unlike rep. ***** and the rest of the corporate serving republiCONS.

Pretty cool to be a koolaid drinking leftist; If you don’t have the numbers you can just make them up!

In any case, what is it you don’t understand about “tax cuts”? By your definition a “tax cut” is a failure to raise taxes or extort money from an individual or group. What should we expect though from someone who would call less of an increase (still positive though) in a program a cut. I wonder what you leftists would do with a real proposed tax cut. Guess what, the majority of Americans are onto your foolish word games. We don’t buy your new definitions of words or phrases and no matter how you “re-frame“ or ”re-package” the argument, we all know just what it really means.
