Angry Prostesters Take to the Streets in Seattle

A group of about 200 protesters took to the Seattle streets Wednesday night, angry that a local police officer was not charged with murder after he shot and killed a local woodcarver in a split-second decision last August:

KING-TV reports:

More demonstrations are possible over the next few days following the decision to not file charges against the Seattle police officer in the fatal shooting of a First Nations woodcarver.

Protesters marched through downtown Seattle Wednesday, frustrated over KIng County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg’s decision to not charge officer Ian Birk for the shooting death of John. T. Williams last August.

The demonstration, which spread from downtown to Capitol Hill, were mostly peaceful, aside from a few scuffles. Several groups plan additional protests for Friday and Saturday.

Although Birk was not charged, a Seattle Police Department review board said the shooting was not justified. Satterberg acknowledged that while Birk made serious tactical errors, there’s no proof he acted with evil intent. That‘s a decision many don’t agree with.

“We do not and legally cannot put police officers on trial for murder or send them to prison for their discretion to use deadly force in good faith and without malice, however tragic the outcome may be,” King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg told KING-TV on  Wednesday, referencing a Washington state law.

I’m a former LEO and do not know enough about this particular incident to form an opinion. Any time a life is taken, it’s a sad situation for everyone involved.

Fear not, lib’s. Your side will get a second bite at the apple. The federal government will likely step in and charge him with a civil rights violation of some sort. They usually do. The officer should expect that visit from a FBI Special Agent, if he hasn’t already had one.

Speaking of “Special Agent”, could someone explain why they are special?

We have a gathering of *support* from Tea Party types for our union busting vote today in Columbus. We’re getting no national coverage, because, as mentioned, we have folks here supporting the elimination of public sector unions. It’s hard to make news of the “Viva La Revolucion!” communist variety when you have the actual public there against the commies. :)

I happen to know the police office since he went to the same Christian college I went to. He was not a gruff nor violent person in any way. I also used to work right next to where this shooting occurred and would see this homeless man quite often while walking to work. In fact, one time he was arrested before 9am in an incredibly drunk state shouting profanities at me as I walked by.

While we don’t really know the full facts to the story I have no doubt that the knife wielding homeless man provoked the officer in some way even if he was not serious. Even though he was a wood carver and nice to tourists I’m sure he was well known by the cops in the area and probably hated them. This is the unfortunate circumstances that led to his death. I believe the policeman truly felt threatened and his life was in danger. The homeless man had enough anger in him (that I personally witnessed) that I do not doubt he acted in some stupid way and tried to attack or pretend to attack the officer.

Any by the way, don’t believe anything you read in “The Stranger”. It’s a horribly liberal local publication.

I live on the other side of the Puget Sound from Seattle…this has been in the news a lot lately. This was a tragic death…a misjudgment on the part of a police officer who had to decide in a split second whether or not to shoot. Tragic. I can only guess how awful the police officer feels having killed someone when there was no need. But unless they can show this was a racist police officer, the judge got it right, imo.
Don’t count out Washington, yet…the conservative movement is growing here. Seattle is a bastion of liberalism and they have the highest concentration of population. But much of Washington is quite conservative, and we are growing in numbers. :^ )

No, he’s right, the standard must be the same if we’re to be a nation of law.

Your protection is YOUR responsibility, not somebody else’s. Get a gun, learn to use it, and if you feel endangered, start carrying. The police cannot protect you, and often do not, and that’s not their fault, they just can’t be there at the time of the crime.

Society would be vastly safer if we gave up the fantasy that police protect us and resumed responsibility for our own safety and well being again through rearming ourselves and according ourselves with politeness and dignity.

I live near Seattle and there is a LOT of robbery, murder, rape etc in the city now.
Whenever the Police are called and they have to use force of some kind for self protection there is a Huge outcry of police brutality etc etc.
I hate to say it but the perpetrators are always the usual suspects, and nearly always in the same parts of town.
Are the Police 100% perfect all the time, of course not, but I can imagine that the Seattle Police feel like quitting responding to calls from these areas, if these people hate the Police so much, they can all just sort it out amongst themselves with a bit of culling.

I’m not familiar with the background of this story, nor did I watch the video. But I would like to say that I think police are trained to aggressively by the ‘state.’

I hear way too many reports of the police emptying their clips into a person who was 30 feet away with a knife because they felt ‘threatened.’

That type of training is reinforced when nothing is done to reign them in and, in fact condoned by the ‘state’ not adjusting their training techniques of these officers.

    Just my two cents.

If you have ever been through advanced weapons training you would know that if anyone is within 21 feet of you when your weapon is holstered has the advantage. They can reach you, and attack you before you have time to draw and aim. It is a tragedy that this happened, but if the officer felt his life was in danger he had to make that call within a split second.

@ TRANCE….. I completely agree. I am so sick of law men and politicians getting off or getting slaps on the wrist because of who they are and who they know. Justice is NOT blind in this country whatsoever. I know police have difficult jobs, but every citizen from the President to homeless on the street should be judged blindly under the law. However, this will NEVER be the case……NEVER.

Kalish, those people are protesting because a cop MURDERED a man for NO reason, and our wonderful prosecutors announced they will not file charges on him. Even his own police department called the shooting unjustified. To make matters worse, he resigned from the force, so now he wont face any type of punishment

Please be informed that the language you used was deemed “not civil” by our esteemed media. The media reserves such terms as “lock and load”, “in the cross hairs”, and “don’t retreat, reload” for the exclusive use of media approved protests such as the Teachers’ unions protest against the Wisconsin governor.

Everyone knows that Seattle has long been a leftist city. Madison WI has also been a leftist hot bed for decades. You would think leftist would be the happiest living in cities run by leftist and populated by leftist. But trouble and riots seem to always happen in cities run by the left and populated by the left. Are they ever happy???

So if your job is driving a car at 200 mph and you make a mistake, the car flips and some spectators get injured and killed, should you then be charged with manslaughter and endangerment? You were just doing your job.

And while I do think police officers should be held to a higher standard, I also believe that we should not hold them as criminals for simply doing their jobs. We ask them to make snap judgments to save our lives with deadly force if need be. Yet, if I follow the eventual conclusion of your argument then we should deny them access to deadly force (and probably any force) to our police. I suppose they should sit down and have a donut with suspected criminals before making any decisions on what action to take.

I don’t agree with police brutality and there seems to be more than enough immature, power hungry, mean lowlifes wearing the uniform. However, split second decisions are just that. Sometimes they are good and sometimes they are not. I’ll let Seattle decide this one while I mull it over. I‘ll bet the cop wishes he had had some ’mull’ time.

If they would accept I’d be all in. A country without liberals would be a prosperous country. Imagine how much better things would be without liberals dragging us down.

      Snow

I know several Seattle’s Police Officers, many are my friends, many of them retired. I don’t recognize Ofcr. Birk, but from reading the story about Williams pulling the knife on him, I’ll call the shooting justified.

As for Office of Professional Accountability, all they are is a bunch of commies who hate police.

You ever heard of De-Policing? Cleveland started doing that when the commies started bitching at the PO-lice, so when they got calls such as burglaries etc, They wouldn’t answer the call or they took
their sweet time, by even as long as 2-3 hours.

We had a shooting in my Apt one time and the shot gun shells came within 3 feet of my head from the apt above. (I still have the pellets, which I found) It took police an hour to get to me. and they came up with shotguns drawn with red lasers on them
Basically it depends on priority of calls and how many they get. 3000 just in South Precinct per shift.

The line officers are fantastic least most of them are. But Management not worth a crap.
If you remember the Drug Czar we have, Gil Kerlikowski used to police chief for SPD
He got an 88% disapproval rating from his officers. He worked for Clinton’s justice dept.

They all know me as “Goober”

According to a article from jan 15 seattle times -
“dr says carvers wound may show he raised knife”. Medical examiner testified- his right arm was most likely in a partially raised position when he was shot, a conclusion based on the path of a bullet that entered the back upper part of the arm. The officer had testified earlier in the week- telling the court that williams right arm was raised when he ordered him to put it down. Seattle police officer wm collins who served as a training officer for birk and one of the first officers to respond to the shooting that he considered birk to be a fine individual and very good officer who was able to calmly deal with people. He also expounded onthe dangers of facing off against someone with a knife, explaining how quickly an attacker could strike.
