Angry Tea Partiers Confront McCain on ‘Hobbit’ Comments at Town Hall

Tea Party Asks McCain For Apology

Whether you are quoting someone else or not, there are probably some things you should not say on the Senate floor, especially if they are about constituents who have supported you in the past. At a town hall meeting in Gilbert this week, constituents who identify with local Tea Party groups gave Arizona Sen. John McCain for quoting a Wall Street Journal editorial that referenced Tea Partiers as “hobbits” last month.  Local KTVK 3 catches the heated exchange at about (2:10):

McCain, however, didn’t back down:

“What apology is in order? What was wrong that I said?

There was no way that a balanced-budget amendment would have passed the Senate. If anyone said that it could, they were not being truthful. Hobbits are not real, and the point is that it was not real.”

In the video Sen. McCain said he is not going to give an apology for something he describes as “the facts.” Here is the controversial segment from the op-ed:

“The Republican House that failed to raise the debt ceiling would somehow escape all blame. Then Democrats would have no choice but to pass a balanced-budget amendment and reform entitlements, and the tea-party Hobbits could return to Middle Earth having defeated Mordor.”

Despite Sen. McCain’s July 27 comments being a quote, many feel they were an attack on the collective Tea Party, inappropriate for the Senate floor, and hypocritical considering it was Sen. McCain who brought to prominence Sarah Palin, a hero to many who identify with the Tea Party .

“It’s not my fault that it was misunderstood,” said Sen. McCain Monday. “I’m sorry that it was misunderstood.”

This is not the first time McCain has defended his Middle Earth remarks. Jonathon Seidl reported on Sen. McCain’s July 28 interview with Sean Hannity:

“’I wasn’t attacking the Tea Partiers or anybody, he said, later adding that the editorial he read was more of an ‘attack on President Obama.’

‘I admire, respect and appreciate the Tea Party, and they’re the ones that gave us a majority in the House of Representatives so that we can get something done,’ McCain said near the end of the interview.

Still, he disagrees with the “idea” that conservatives would rail against John Boehner‘s plan because it doesn’t do enough (such as advancing a balanced budget amendment).”

KTVK 3 reports that many constituents at the Gilbert town hall were as frustrated after hearing Sen. McCain as they were when they first arrived.

“McCain showed he didn’t have all the answers and at times blamed the democrats for the problems the country is facing. ‘We may have a revolt in this country,’ said Ed Nemeyer, who was at Monday’s town hall meeting, ‘And you might see Washington become completely irrelevant.’”

Things didn’t get any easier for Sen. McCain when he tried to move the conversation away from the recent debt negotiations. Ahwatukee FootHills News caught that when Sen. McCain was asked about United Nations Agenda 21, a plan for sustainable development introduced at the 1992 Earth Summit, he was jeered by some in the audience when he needed the questioner to elaborate.

“‘It’s a takeover of the United States,’ a man said. ‘The UN wants to take over our farms.’

‘You are so out of touch, dude,’ another told McCain”

Ouch.

I say any politician that already has 2 terms in has got to be voted out. We the voters can set our own term limits replacing the old with new and get back to our God given right of freedom. I hope it’s not too late.

If they do get a retirement package it should be a small percentage of what they save (money wise) for their district and Federal. If they don’t save any money they get nothing… actually the more i think about it… NO retirement package. You serve two term max then you have to find a private sector job.

Term limits might help, but what we really need is to get rid of the lobbyists, no compete contracts, pacs, tax breaks that allow these guys to trade the peoples business for personal gain. They and their families should be kept in dorms, fed all meals, and all bank accounts put in private trusts, that they can’t touch while in office. No member of their families should be able to hold any federal position, or work for any company that contracts with the federal government. Take the profit out and good people will serve.

Senator John McCain is a RINO, an irrelevant politician, a clueless individual as to the present state of our Republic. Unfortunately, he is the same man, he legacy is the only reason that he is still in Government. People in Arizona need to separate the two men and vote him out.

My only concern with term limits is, and I know this can be a stretch of the imagination these days, but what IF a Sentor is really busting to do the will of the people? Really doing his/her job to reflect the desires of those that put him/her in office?

For that individual, as fictious as they may seem today, I would not want them out after 2 terms.
If a person is not doing their job, then it is the fault of the people for keeping that person in office.

The Tea Party people are like Hobbits. For the simple fact that Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee, both hobbits, were entrusted with destroying the most evil thing in Middle Earth; the ring of power. They were hunted, belittled and threats made upon their lives. In the end the ring of power was destroyed thanks to the hobbits. I view the Democrat party as the “ring of power” and it must be destroyed and it us up to us “Hobbits/Tea Party” people to do so. John McCain is Smeagol/Gollum in this story!!

Politicians collect political debt from day one in office. The longer they stay, the more they owe. The quicker we turn them over the better. John McCain is the worst kind of liberal because he hides behind a Republican banner like to so many others in office today. I say all politicians who have been in office for more than 4 years should go. Let the freshman Republican’s take over and make quick sense of the mess Obama has put this country in. They seem to be the only ones that understand that without a balanced budget amendment, America will not be taken seriously throughout the world. What part of WE DON‘T HAVE ANY MONEY TO SPEND do these old politicians and idiot demo’s not understand. When it comes to 2012 it will be out with the old and anything that smells of progressive democracy to make room for a strong republic. I understand your feelings about this JCLDWL, but I’ve been working with municipal government in at least four municipalites now for over five years. I can truthfully say that having observed the complicated issues involving Boards of Education, union contracts, municipal governing bodies (Boards of Selectmen, Councils or other forms of elected officials) and endless committees ( Planning and Zoning, Zoning Board of Appeals, Planning Committees, Historical Districts, Health, Welfare and Safety Committees, Budget and Appropriations, and Boards of Estimation and Taxation among them) it take a long time to understand the complicated issues. Yes, everyone wants more services for less taxes, but there are ramifications.

There is a reason why Board of Education and other municipal committees stagger their Boards terms so that there will always be someone who has experience on the Boards to help the newbies.
Expecting an inexperienced Representative to go to Washington and figure out all the ins and outs, form alliances and work together politically to get something done in four years is unrealistic. They are just beginning to hit their stride and have an effect after four years. Yeah, you can send the newbies in screaming “Reform” at the top of their lungs, but government by its very nature moves at the speed of a three toed sloth. By the time their changes are actually put into practice, the newbies will be gone and someone else changing the rules again.

I agree with the concept, but what if you have a semi-conservative in office right now and they have already served over two terms? To vote them out, one would likely have to vote for someone who might not be as favorable to cutting spending, smaller government, balanced budge, or other more conservative values.

What would you do in that situation? I would have no problem voting McCain out of office. He is a joke! (I still can’t believe we had to choose between Obama or McCain. How pathetic.). But, I am not in the situation of being completely unhappy with my representative in my neck of the woods……. And someone else could be a whole lot worse!

Term limits isn’t the answer, because the length of time a politician holds office is merely a symptom of a larger issue. The real answer must address the real issue, and that is political parties. In his farewell address, George Washington warned of the danger and eventual ruin that would come once our political system was sublet to political parties. Yes, term limits would be a start, but outlawing political parties is the only long term solution.

Although Washington did acknowledge the fact that parties are sometimes beneficial in promoting liberty in monarchies, he said that political parties must be restrained in a popularly elected government because of their tendency to distract the government from their duties, create unfounded jealousies amongst groups and regions, raise false alarms amongst the people, promote riots and insurrection, and provide foreign nations and interests access to the government where they can impose their will upon the country.

Any of that sound a little too close for comfort?

When it comes down to it – only the 26 in the Senate and the 22 in Congress should be looked at for going a second term – and even then I know we can oust Chambliss and Graham :)

I accept his explanation that his analogy was not meant as an insult to those of us in the Tea Party. Still waiting for VP Biden’s explanation for agreeing that we are “terrorists” though. Who’d have ever thought that advocating spending only what you take in is “terrorism”?

You need to do as I am doing and take the “Label” of Terrorist and turn it around on them, because remember the phrase that Progressives love to use when they fund Muslim organisations. They say “One man‘s Terrorist is another man’s Freedom Fighter” and I am fighting for the Freedom of the People to choose their own destiny.

I do want to fight the evil of socialism, and I do want to destroy it by all means. It would be nice to have some wizards on our side, but I will settle with God. We can and will defeat this evil.

Kudos to the one who asked! TEA Party folks are NOT the bad guys here. They are every day Americans who do not like the direction that our country is being taken. Those in Washington are afraid. Call then names, but just like the wee hobbits- they were the ones who stood for the good and conquered evil. The wee folks of middle America and those who believe in what’s good about this country, have ONE voice and will STAND to keep that good strong. Washington and Politicians should be afraid.

McCain was one of the leaders in the immigration reform talks in 2007(?) that was shot down in flames by the people. I have seen him as a RINO ever since. I hated that by the time Ohio got to vote in the primary, McCain was the only less evil left. I already knew a lot about Obama and definitely did not want the man-child, but McCain gave it away by not challenging him. The “be nice, get-along” strategy just doesn’t work when Democrats refuse to follow it. McCain just didn’t get it and he IS out of touch with the normal, middle-class, person. I agree with everyone who says we need term limits. We also need limits on Congressional benefits.

There is so much more…. just look..

To vote for McCain because he was a POW is kinda like allowing Bernie Madoff setting you up a portfolio after he might have gotten out of jail. McCain and Kerry BOTH Defecated on the POW-MIAs and their families as well as anyone who served. I am sorry, I just don’t understand your thinking on him as a recipient of your vote. IMHO.
