Animal House-Style Hazing: ‘He Was Paddled so Hard he Needed Medical Treatment’

An “Animal House” fraternity in upstate New York hazed a fraternity pledge so badly that “his life may have been ruined” as a result.
The New York Post reports:
An “Animal House” fraternity at an upstate hazing hotbed treated a pledge so badly “it may have ruined his life,” leading him to quit the school even though he had a substantial scholarship, according to a new lawsuit and the man’s lawyer.
During Michael Warren’s initiation at the Alpha Delta Omega frat at Hartwick College in Oneonta last year he was paddled so hard he needed medical treatment – after he spent an entire night locked in a bathroom with other pledges being subjected to strobe lights and blasting music, lawyer Gerald Gross said.
And worse, Warren, the only African-American to pledge at Alpha Delta Omega, was “racially harassed” — forced to dress up in a pimp costume, according to the suit.
“The place is run like Animal House,” Gross said. “He was paddled very, very aggressively and together with other pledges he was locked in the bathroom all night.”
Once the pledge, Michael Warren, came forward with his story, he was treated like an outcast at his campus. His lawyer said that the pledge was “so frankly traumatized, he won’t come back. It may have ruined his life.”

Posted on April 23, 2011 at 8:08amAt anytime he could have quit. Nobody held a gun to his head and demanded or threatend his life pehaps this could of been a well thought out plan of his to make some money about how much money will it cost to make this man feel better? “lawsuit” the new way to make your first million ?

Posted on April 23, 2011 at 7:50amWhy is this a story? Who cares what a bunch of idiots do in a frat house. If they stuck around and were stupid enough to join a frat house, then it’s their decision to go through the initiation.

Posted on April 23, 2011 at 6:24amGood thing that, at least for now, our tax dollars are not wasted on these kind of deranged morons. I would be pissed if I payed for my kids to go to college, and found out that they were taking part in this kind of behavior. I am of the opinion that kids should have to pay for at least part of their post high-school education, if not all of it. If they have to foot the bill instead of their parents, they might take it a little more seriously.

Posted on April 23, 2011 at 2:32amI never know what to think about frats/sororitys. people can make their own choices but alot of them have strange rituals, strange history of the founders and crazy hazing. however there are some that work for good and do things in the community and for their school. usually they seem to have some strange practices though .

Personally I think colleges ought to drop this whole sorority business, and condemn these acts of brain deadness.

Posted on April 22, 2011 at 10:24pmThe color of his skin should not be the issue here. Yes, fraternity pranks are part of being in a fraternity, however, this time it was taken to far and the fraternity should be held accountable. Most of the comments I have read so far sounds like you would expect if we were talking about 10 to 14 year olds but we aren’t we are talking about 18 years and older, you know adults. They should be held accountable for their actions.

Posted on April 22, 2011 at 10:39pmWhen I was in college, you knew what you were getting into if you joined a Sorority or Frat. They didn’t have to do this. They could have walked away, but they continued. If you decided to stay why are you owed anything? When will we have people accountable for their own actions. If he tried to leave the frat and was refused, that is one thing, but going along with it and then telling afterwords you aren’t owed a cent.

I agree with you 100%. Back when I was pledging my Animal House fraternity (The one mentioned by name in the movie theme song), I had my thumb broken during a hazing exercise. It did not stop me and I continued on completing the task. A visit to the hospital came later. The experience only further solidified the bond with my fellow pledges and brothers. I made the choice to participate and accepted the consequences without complaint.

Once you graduate and leave,,,,the frats/sororities aren’t with you,,,,but your education is. Forget the childish stuff and focus on why you have reserved a part of your life for education. You don’t need the distractions.

Posted on April 22, 2011 at 10:53pmFrats are very childish and just plain stupid. You go to college for the education and yes socializing and bonding with others may play a roll in this process but these Frats are getting very bizarre with some of the perverted and degrading initiations that they are doing. College should be about building responsible citizens with character, and expanding healthy minds and promoting ethical behavior. Frats are more about drinking and promoting degenerate behavior for example just because the entire brotherhood participates or endorses something does not make it right or any less appalling. Just like rape is totally unacceptable and very immoral behavior no matter if it is a single perpetrator or done by a frat it is still totally sick and absolutely unacceptable. The same goes for some of these very sick initiations. I know there are some that may be very beneficial and valuable in ones future career, but these days most are just a group to get together and party, raise hell and feel good about it because everyone was equally being stupid.

Hazing is legit. Avoiding it, is the correct response. Form your own personality, be an individual, stand apart from the herd.

Posted on April 24, 2011 at 2:09pmWillingness to do such things to others shows severe mental weakness on the part of the people perpetrating the abuse. I was hazed pretty bad in sports and i responded by not hazing other people, and being really good at the sports so the people hazing me eventually looked really stupid when i brought up my factual superiority to them. People that do that to other people are trash, weak hearted, semi-sociopaths who deserve to be sued, ridiculed and ruined. People that are capable of such thngs are capable of worse abuses and acceptance of these intitial steps turns them into monsters (I would know i work in a inner-cit public school). Eric Holder won‘t get involved because those rich boys dishing out the abuse’s parents are probably donors and aren’t democrats perpetually in rich frat boy mode?
