Animal Rights Activists Petition Judge to Send Toddler-Killing Dog to Sanctuary Instead of Euthanizing It

The fate of “Onion” a 6-year-old mastiff-Rhodesian ridgeback mix will be decided on Friday. Onion recently mauled a toddler to death in Henderson, Nev., but animal rights activists are saying it wasn’t a malicious act and they hope the dog will be allowed to live at an animal sanctuary for aggressive canines.

Jeremiah Eskew-Shahan was killed late last month when the 120-pound Onion reportedly attacked the 1-year-old as he was using the animal to help pull himself to his feet — something he did regularly. The Las Vegas Review Journal has more on the incident:

He latched his jaws around the boy’s head and began shaking him back and forth. Jeremiah‘s grandmother wasn’t strong enough to pull the boy away. [Christopher] Shahan heard the commotion from upstairs and raced to rescue his son.

“I got the dog off the baby,” he said. “I tried to save my baby.”

The entire episode lasted about 30 seconds. It was long enough to break Jeremiah’s neck and cause other unspeakable injuries, Shahan said.

Paramedics rushed to the home on Navarre Lane, near Arroyo Grande Boulevard. They took Jeremiah to St. Rose Dominican Hospital, Siena campus. He was then flown to the trauma unit at University Medical Center, where he died early Saturday morning.

“I feel like I’m in a zombie state,” Shahan said Saturday evening while standing in front of his home in the otherwise quiet neighborhood.

Jeremiah “was the best thing I’ve ever had in my life. He was the best baby. He always smiled, always.”

Watch the heartbroken father speak of the situation (Content Warning: Some strong language):

The dog should have been put down Tuesday according to Nevada state law, but the local Fox affiliate reports an animal rights group filed an injunction hours before Onion would have been euthanized:

“The dog didn’t do anything,” said Richard Rosenthal, co-founder of The Lexus Project. “This was not a vicious attack where the dog attempted to tear the child apart, and it’s not a situation where the child was on the ground and the dog went over to him and attacked him.”

The group has set up for the dog to be sent to an animal sanctuary in Colorado, instead of being euthanized.

“They’re willing to take the dog, evaluate the dog and rehabilitate the dog,” Rosenthal said. ”The dog can stay there as long as need be, including the rest of his life, if it turns out there is an aggression issue.”

Watch Fox’s report with reactions from local residents about the fate of Onion:

Whether Onion will be put down or euthanized will be decided on Friday. First, the two parties will meet to discuss a settlement and if one can’t be reached, the decision will go to district court Judge Joanna Kirshner.

Heinrich Himmler was an animal rights activist, and thus the behavior of these Peta freaks is no surprise.

They would loose this argument with me because I’d put the dogs head on a pike as soon as the tragedy took place.

The father is no man, but rather a woman with testicles, Otherwise, he would have done the same.

I have to agree, putting any animal above your child is criminal. Id have killed the dog instantly. In fact if the dog isn’t put down i would hope the district attorney would press to have him put down. This sets a very poor example of upholding human rights. Putting an animal above a child is ridiculous. Talk about some screwed up people in this situation. They are truly screwed up in the head.

It’s a dog, not a person. It’s not guilty of a crime. If it is killed, it’s not done as a punishment or a warning to other dogs. It’s done because the dog is dangerous. If there is a way to end that danger without killing the dog, then that’s the right thing to do. It’s a no-brainer. You don’t kill a dog if you don’t have to.

The article said that this act was one of “uncharacteristic agression” for the dog. It could be that this poor baby aggrivated an unknown problem. In additon, this dog was faithful & serving while the mom suffered lung cancer. That doesn’t mean that, had I had the opportunity to shoot this dog if I couldn’t have stopped the attack otherwise, I wouldn’t have, but…

Hey!! I understand compassion and animal affection, it runs deep within my household. We have several animals, ranging from cats, dogs, to hermit crabs, all of them cared for on a daily basis, never with the thought of maliciously harming them. BUT!!! I would have ripped that dogs jaw back till it touched it’s tail within seconds of the attack on my child. I would have drove my fist through the dogs skull.. This would have been a REACTIONARY REFLEX nothing more than that. How this dog is still alive is above my comprehension. SORRY PETA!!!!

You morons fail to place the blame in the proper area: the parents. The OP is sick talking about decapitating the dog and sticking his head on a pike. Instead of talking gleefully about massacring this dog, why not humbly speak of this child and denounce his parents for being idiots! What you knee-jerk reaction people fail to realize is that animals don’t have reasoning skills as people do. The dog did what a dog does. The parents are the ones that UTTERLY FAILED to use logic. Never keep an animal around a young child. It’s VERY commons sense. To be going around beating your chests about “I would have done this to that dog” and “I would have done that to the dog” FAILS to realize the point of this story. You can’t blame a dog, but YOU CAN BLAME THE IDIOTIC PARENTS!

…and I must reiterate: The OP is mentally sick to gleefully talk about decapitating a dog and prominently displaying his head.

If I saw a dog or any animal attacking my child, I would not hesitate to kill it to save my kid.

As for you, A. James, it’s not “knee-jerk reaction”, it’s called “parental instinct”. If an animal sees its young in danger, it will attack and/or kill the threat. Some herbivorous animals, such as buffalo, will kill the young of predators, knowing they’ll become a threat they grow up. A human, being able to rationalize, can figure out this dog has the killer instinct against humans, and sparing it might give it another chance. There is a real chance it can escape its proposed enclosure.

Since the dog is no different than food, then what’s the harm in letting these animal rights people take the dog for themselves?

It’s just a dog. Yes, it’s sad that a kid is dead, but it’s ridiculous to exact vengeance or justice against a dog. As long as it’s not hurting anyone, and since it would be in a sanctuary run by people specializing in caring for aggressive dogs this is likely, then what’s the harm in allowing the sanctuary to take him?

This is so sad. I can’t imagine how both the mother and grandmother feel losing that child.

My daughter had her face ripped up by a neighbor’s loose dog when she was 4. It broke her nose, and narrowly missed her eye. 40 stitches and plastic surgery and you can’t tell unless you look very closely (she’s 23 now). I do remember how I felt that day, trying to pull that dog off of her, I will never forget it.

The dog was a habitual agressor and after a rabies quarintine was put down. My prayers to the family.

Dogs do know right from wrong. To assume otherwise is to disregard their intelligence. Dogs get away with what they can. This is the duty of the owner to instill in the dog’s mind to obey on pain of severe punishment. A dog MUST know who is boss. A dog WANTS to know who is boss. A dog is happiest when controlled. Dogs that are untrained, ignored or undisciplined are unhappy (like this dog). People are the fools if they do not understand these rules.

CATB, IMHO you need to be strong and impress on the owners of the pit bulls in no uncertain terms that any harm comes to your children you will visit that harm on them tenfold.

They have to see the determination in your eyes. Just hoping nothing bad happens is not enough. People like that are lazy and impose extra burdens on others around them who have to adjust to their irresponsibilities. They need to know your hurt will be dwarfed by the hurt they will feel if you or your family is injured. No questions.

I agree with you Eagle, that dog should have never been near the baby..even if supervised.

And for Catb, I had some of the same types of pittbull owners up the street from me. One day the 3 pits got loose and came into my yard. My 15 yr old dog got mauled by them but was able to make enough noise and fight them off to survive.
I called animal control…pretty much was on my own. The dogs were still on my property and challenged me. Animal control loaded their dead asses in the truck 8 hours later.
So the dogs died as a result of bad owners and I had to shell out 700 bucks to patch up my dog.

I never heard anything from those guys even though they watched me shoot their dogs. Most cases you wont get in trouble shooting them if they are in your yard. Your laws may vary.

      With you Sir.
Why would you have an untrained dog around a baby? I have a Big dog, She has a lot outside 100‘x 100’
and is great with kids. But she is never left alone with a child ( and mine is 8 ) without an adult having her on a lead. My old bloodhound is getting around 100lb and has fought many dogs that came on the land and ran all of them off. She may look sleepy but I KNOW what she can do. Heck I think I ‘am the only human she has ever bit! ( I was trying to remove a still born pup on her first litter ) and she nipped at my hand. As much as we love her I would not think twice when it comes to the kids or grandchildren. She would cease to exist in seconds! I very much doubt it would be from a gunshot.
More likely it would be by my hands as not to hit a child with a stray round.
Would I lose any sleep over killing my friend of more than 7 years?
Hell no!!! Not one second!! This is stuff that dont even rate conversation! When the EMT’s arrived they would have had to step over the dogs carcass!! See to much of this crap now. Dogs are not on the same level as humans. What the heck are folks thinking?

I very much agree. Why is it that now the government and even private organizations from other states dictate what we have to do with even our pets. His pet his decision.

Why just the father? Doesn’t the mother have a say in this, too? And FYI, if it was MY child, I would have stabbed it to death on the spot. (Sorry to say, I do not own a gun … yet.)

I love dogs more than people, but there are plenty of dogs out there who won’t kill little babies. Put him down, give a good rescue dog a home.

Ok, so let me get this straight, this dog KILLED a beautiful gift from God. A little boy that will never have a chance to grow up, play ball with his daddy or marry his high school sweetheart…and we should be concerned about the DOG???? What is wrong with these people? They are an insult to humanity.

Your comment struck the right chord. A child died. That is the story not the dog.

State law says the dog should be put down. They should follow state law.

Follow the law, educate the people! Humans MUST COME FIRST, but stupid humans COULD be an exception!

I have been involved in dog training and, therefore, dog behavior for over forty-five years! Veterinary schools’ dealing in “dog behavior”and the field of “animal behavior” as a science is only about thirty years old! Previous to the advent of the “book trained experts,“ we ”soldiers in the trenches,“ obedience trainers and ”problem dog” workers tried hard to educate our fellow humans that GENERALLY the DOG was not the PROBLEM, but the fact that HUMANS knew and understood SO LITTLE about dog societal behavior, dog breed/type expectations, and specific dog behavior, SET-UP THE HUMANS AND DOG for FAILURE OR DISASTER! Generally, although there are exceptions through breeding and/or early raising/training, there are no “bad” dogs, but there are bad situations and stupid, unknowing/uneducated people!!!

This family situation was a DISASTER waiting to happen! This dog, a combination of two strong and dominate breeds (an old-English/Roman fighting dog, and a very fearless lion-fighting dog from Africa), coupled with what looks like a human (the grandmother) who babied the dog (see photo of dog this size and potential LAYING ON TOP OF THIS HUMAN WOMAN!!!), who did not understand the potential of this dog, was setting the dog and young child up for failure!

We CANNOT 100% “teach” dogs to go against their natural tendencies. Young members of a dog pack are usually highly tolerated, BUT, an adult dog (male or female, even if neutered), can become “intolerant” and “correct the young pup (or in this case human young!), for “bothering” them when the adult dog does not want to be bothered.

Taking a pup by the head and shaking it, generally, will not hurt the pup as the neck is one of the strongest parts of a dog, and the body type and weight of a young pup equal to this age human (about two months of age for dogs), is minimal in comparison to a human child’s weight, neck strength, head construction. Also note the photo of the dog “cuddled” up to the child, laying at the same level (possibly on a bed), alone with the child. To dogs, especially dogs who retain strong genes from their past, this puts the child on the same SOCIETAL LEVEL as the dog.

A toy poodle on your lap may not be a threat, but a large dog of breeds that were developed to work on their own, that is “permitted” or “taught” to be “equal” with the humans in the house, again, is a DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN!

I care for a large number of sheep on my farm here in the east of the U.S. I DEPEND on livestock guardian dogs daily to protect my sheep from coyote/timberwolf crosses. I use working Border Collies to help move small and large numbers of livestock around my farm. I LOVE and DEPEND on dogs daily! This was HUMAN FAILURE, and the “animal rights” people may be correct that the dog could be “rehabilitated, but is that TRULY the best for the dog-society and our for our human society?

Let’s take the money that would be put toward this one dog, and let’s educate the humans on the CORRECT care and raising of our ANIMALS (which are NOT “little people” or pseudo-children!), from animal behavior point of view, and reduce the POTENTIAL FOR DISASTER!
