KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) — A baby was bawling, and Sony Ericsson Open quarterfinalist David Ferrer wasn’t too happy, either.
Trailing in his match and annoyed by the crying, Ferrer directed a forehand lob toward the infant after losing his serve midway through the second set Wednesday.
The ball didn’t come close to the youngster when it landed in the stands, but the crying stopped.
“It was in one moment of the match, but nothing special,” Ferrer said. “It was not the problem.”
Instead, the Spaniard blamed a case of indigestion. He lost to American Mardy Fish, 7-5, 6-2.
Fish said he didn’t see Ferrer hit the ball into the stands.
“He’d probably take that one back if he could,” Fish said. “He’s a very nice guy. Obviously flustered.”

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 4:08pmIf his aim was towards that infant what he did qualifies for attempted battery. Obviously he was and as asinine an act, to some extent I empathize with that Tennis player.
Babies are babies and it does not take much to cause a baby to cry and cry. I have found traveling by plane a level of Dante’s hell when babies, naturally, start to cry under the uncomfortable conditions found in air flights. Just the pressure in their ears due to the rapid rise to the plane is sufficient for a baby to cry. It is understandable that babies when stressed express that with loud crying. Tennis tournaments, to golf ball games to chess games babies should not be allowed to be part of the audience since a sudden burst of tears would destroy the concentration of the players.
In the same light those airline flights that are nothing more than a trip to purgatory when a baby starts howling should take passengers with infants to be secluded from the rest so that the baby’s cry does not disturb the rest
I do not blame the babies when they start crying aboard an airplane. I too have many a time wanted to cry under the third class level of service. It is natural to expect the baby to cry, therefore it should be taken into account in airplanes to games that need concentration. If that baby was located outside the hearing range of that tennis player, that baby would not have been an irritant.

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 3:28pmGet over it! Although I don’t agree what he did, I don’t really see a problem. In the mindset of an athlete, winning is everything. A baby crying is a distraction just like a child screaming in the background of your phone call to a bill collector could be. Really? Did so called child abuser aim at the child? Why did the father of the child bring him to the match anyway? Let’s focus on real scary stuff and not a puffy green ball.

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 3:24pmParents like this are obnoxious when they feel their brat can not only disturb an event participant but also those other people that have paid good money to attend that event. When I attend a match I don’t need to hear some kid screaming his head off, but I really get pissed at supposed adults who are so arrogant to think the rest of us want to hear their kid screaming. Get a babysitter.

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 2:59pmHe’s completely out of line to do that, at the same time, he should’ve stopped and asked the referee to ask the parents to go somewhere else to sooth the baby. Bad planning on both sides.

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 2:51pmHe was wrong to do that but so were the parents who brought a baby to a tennis tournament. One of my pet peeves is to go to a restaurant or a movie theater and have small child crying and screaming. I think that it is extremely discourteous and shows a complete lack of consideration for others. If your kid is crying or screaming the parent should immediately take said child out of the area until they are quiet. Better yet, don’t take them there in the first place. Get a babysitter. If you can‘t afford one then don’t go to those type of functions.

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 2:34pmuh, what insensitive goof-ball would bring a baby to a tennis match (sun, noise, length of time) and/or NOT get up and leave the instant the child began to cry. Or are you one of the masses who think these professionals have to take anything you dish out because you bought a ticket? Clods do that.

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 2:32pmHere’s a thought. If your baby is bawling at a sporting event and interrupting concentration…get up and LEAVE!! How rude and inconsiderate can people be? Now I like babies and all, but there are times and places that squalling children should be removed. Parents FAIL here.

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 4:26pmI agree. I don’t really see why you have to maintain absolute silence at tennis matches while you can scream your head of at a basketball player at the free throw line, but that’s the way it is. Tennis is a no yelling sport, and everybody knows it. Don’t bring a baby.

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 3:13pmI’m not a professional tennis player, but I can’t imagine trying to play with a baby crying in the stands. Think about this Rightpolitically, when was the last time you saw a tennis player shooting someone in front of a club, being arrested for dog fighting, or any other of the nefarious activities of other professional athletes. It is for that reason that the only sport I watch, is tennis. ;-)

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 5:29pmIf he aimed the shot at the baby, shame on him. I have been to many Pro.Tennis matches and you don’t talk. I have never seen a baby at a match probably for that reason.. The parents should have taken the baby outside.Maybe something was wrong with the baby and they needed to take care of it. The other people did not pay that kind of money to listen to a baby cry.!!!!!!!!!! I am sure the one PLAYING for that kind of money didn’t want to hear it. I love babies but there some places they don’t need to go. TENNIS MATCHES, GOLF GAMES, THEATERS, CHURCHES, etc.
