‘Anon’s Greatest Hit So Far’: Hackers Take Credit for CIA Website Crash

Just last Friday, the hacker collective Anonymous claimed victory for gaining access a private FBI conference call — as well as taking down several websites. Here‘s today’s deja vu moment: Anonymous has accepted credit for downing the Central Intelligence Agency’s website and hacking personal information from several Alabama government sites.
RT reports that the CIA’s website appeared to be down just after 3 p.m. this afternoon — at the time of this posting, it still remains offline. RT states that it is most likely a DDoS attack where the hackers overload the server causing the site to crash. Gizmodo writes “If this is what it looks like, it could be Anon’s greatest hit so far.”
The CIA is reportedly looking into these attacks.
The group also claims to have stolen the personal information of more than 46,000 people from Alabama law enforcement and government websites.
In an online news release Friday, the group claimed to have taken Social Security numbers, license plate numbers, phone numbers, addresses and criminal records.
Mobile city spokeswoman Barbara Drummond said Utah authorities alerted officials Thursday night that hackers may be targeting the city. She told The Associated Press that the city shut down its computers to avoid the attack and that the hackers did not gain access to Mobile’s servers.
However, hackers did breach the website of the city webmaster, and took data from a recent program offering amnesty to people with outstanding warrants for municipal offenses.
The warrant amnesty information from Mobile had already been made public by the city to encourage people to participate in the amnesty program, Drummond said. She said city technicians are still trying to determine whether some personal information required to log on to that website may have been stolen.
The group says the attack was prompted by what it called Alabama’s “racist legislation” targeting illegal immigrants.
“You complain about immigrants costing the state money, however, you do not care about spending the same money to protect your own legal citizens,” the news release said.
The group says it will not use the personal information to do damage.
“Because of the possible cost of lives and money to regular citizens, we are deleting this data and are seeking to make it known that you not only have shown zero regard for immigrants, but for the very citizens that live in the great state of Alabama.”
Officials in other Alabama cities have said they are not aware of being attacked.
Hackers claiming to be affiliated with Anonymous have launched a spate of attacks on law enforcement websites in recent weeks, hitting such cities as Salt Lake City, Boston, Syracuse, N.Y. and Greece. The collective of activists, pranksters and hackers have also targeted financial institutions such as Visa and MasterCard, as well as the Church of Scientology.
The New York Times reports Jerry Irvine, a member of the National Cyber Security Task Force, as saying the group is “unstoppable” and that more attacks such as this will continue to happen on government sites:
“Why can’t they be stopped? Because security technologies have not kept up with the extent of the vulnerabilities that exist.”

I have considered doing exactly what you have suggested but I want to keep up to date with what is happening and know of no other way. I think the day is soon coming when all communications will be shut off. The day when we will no longer have the right to speak out against the government ruled by the progressives. I just figure that it is already to late, they know all about me any way. I am concerned for some here on this site that post of violence and make threatening remarks. First of all, it makes us loose our credabilty and gives the progressives the ammunition they need to make us the EVIL extremeist that people need to fear. The trolls are baiting us. We need to watch what is going on for sure! but there are certain things like Face Book and using Google (it is hard not to) that we have to limit or not participate in at all. Face Book has been a rarity for me because I had a sense this was a little too much “togetherness” for the whole world and I find it odd people are so comfortable with it. Twitter is another one.
I also have been trying (not so well-but better) not to comment on sites I watch if there is a comment section. I guess I want like minds to know they are not alone, so I comment. But we are all going to have to be more disciplined.
Look up one of the alternate meanings of “legion” besides the once associated with what we see in the bible. Is the separate, the same, or both?

CIA.gov might have just one server and no backups as it would be lucky to get 500 hits a day. Send a few million it will crash. No one has CIA.gov as their homepage. Try crashing drudge or all of Facebook then it might be big. They get more hit in on hour than CIA.gov in a month. DDOS attacks are not that important other than showing that they can do it. But it is not hard with the right script/program.

Posted on February 11, 2012 at 12:38am@cofemale They are “script kiddies” in that they use the widely available well known network stress tool LOIC or Low Orbit Ion Cannon(originally developed by Praetox Technologies who released it to public domain). There is no actual technical knowledge needed to use it. Simply enter target website in appropriate box, and click the “launch button”. It then floods the targeted website with continuous HTTP, TCP, or UDP requests until the server becomes overloaded. It usually only works well if there are a lot of people doing it all at once, so Anonymous coordinates their targets and attacks via the well known message board 4chan and their IRC channels. If not performed by a proxy the attack is easily traceable. The more sinister approach to this attack these days is with a botnet. Hacker distributes a trojan en-mass via emails with embedded Adobe or Java exploits or binds the trojan with sought after media(music, game, movie, etc), uploads it to a public torrent tracker and waits for the mass downloaded trojan to connect back to him(without the victims knowing). The hacker can then send commands to all the infected machines to do whatever he wants(harvest login creds, credit card info, send mass spam, or DDoS). I.E.: Zeus, Conficker, Torpig, Mariposa, Rustock, Koobface, etc…these are the real threats, who cares if Anonymous takes out a website for a day or two when these actively steal millions and due uncalculated amounts of damage.

At lest someone here has a understanding of how this work. I would only say that they do not attack the “web site” but the firewall and there is almost always more then just a web server behind that and sometimes every server for the company or multiple companies. Once the attack begins very easy to see and be alerted the reason the sites go down is because the firewall is froze or they pull the system to protect what is behind the firewall. When they are able to get data from the system it shows that they not only froze the systems defenses (though DDoS) but also got into the equipment behind, even if the web server is off site the data on it can show paths back to the main network and lots of other sensitive data from remote user log in info for any remote access and cloud services and its connections back to other part of a network both remote and local ect…
As for the silver bullet unless you believe in werewolves its a joke. It will do damage to lots of bot systems and never find its way back to a library where the command was sent from. I am sure that really mess up your idea that they are sting in a basement someplace but in reality in a NOC in Serbia or China with more hardware and funding then anyone here trying to stop them. The US is so far behind it will be easier for us to get out of debt then protect our networks. The US focus in on a kill switch to protect the government if the serfs get out of hand.

It took decades to harden buildings and vehicles, beef up protective details, improve crowd surveillance, learn to identify potential assassins and infiltrate movements likely to sponsor them. All regimes, whether totalitarian, authoritarian or democratic were compelled to take these steps. In the process freedom of movement, freedom of speech and press, access to public officials, privacy of postal, telephonic communication, and many other civil liberties were quashed.
I very much fear some such tightening will result from cyber-terrorism, cyber-anarchism or whatever else we choose to call it. Let these people crash a market, bring down a major institution–military, government, corporation, bank–and all states around the world will rush to “take steps.” The reaction will be much worse than after 9/11.

Website designers are so much into the “make it pretty” that they often forget that priority #1 is “make it work.”

Pretty much anybody can pull of a DDOS attack these days. This is nothing special. If the media had half a clue on how the Internet works, this wouldn’t be news.
