Anonymous Claim: ‘We Have Access to Every Classified Database in the U.S. Government’

On rare occasions, members of the hacker collective Anonymous speak out as individuals. Recently, a member known as Commander X (his real name is Christopher Doyon) granted the Montreal Gazette in Canada an interview in which he revealed the hackvists claim to have access to every federal government database.
For weeks the Gazette compiled encrypted emails from Doyon, who is in Canada living in “underground railroad”-style safe houses while on the run from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, just to set up the interview. The Q&A reveals some insight into how Anonymous came to be as strong as it is now, leadership style, public perception of online information safety, and next steps for the collective. Here are a few choice quotes from the Q&A:
- There’s a really good argument at this point that we might well be the most powerful organization on Earth. The entire world right now is run by information. Our entire world is being controlled and operated by tiny invisible 1s and 0s that are flashing through the air and flashing through the wires around us. So if that’s what controls our world, ask yourself who controls the 1s and the 0s? It’s the geeks and computer hackers of the world.
- The average Anon is not like me, working 12 hours a day dedicating their life to this. He’s an IT guy or a cable installer with a few hours to spare and he wants to be told what to do.
- I think the general public is beginning to learn the value of information.
- If you want to call me a terrorist, I have no problem with that. But I would ask you, “Who is it that’s terrified?” If it’s the bad guys who are terrified, I’m really super OK with that. If it’s the average person, the people out in the world we are trying to help who are scared of us, I’d ask them to educate themselves, to do some research on what it is we do and lose that fear.
- Right now we have access to every classified database in the U.S. government. It’s a matter of when we leak the contents of those databases, not if. You know how we got access? We didn’t hack them. The access was given to us by the people who run the systems.
- Now people are leaking to Anonymous and they’re not coming to us with this document or that document or a CD, they’re coming to us with keys to the kingdom, they’re giving us the passwords and usernames to whole secure databases that we now have free reign over. … The world needs to be concerned.
Gizmodo’s techie analysis of this latter claim is that it’s “absurd” and “an outrageously ambitious catch.“ It points to how it would be ”too vast to be possible” for someone from every government agency to leak sensitive information to Anonymous. Still, even having information of any sort from some agencies gives Anonymous some bite to its bark.
Of late, Anonymous has been relatively quiet after recent arrests, which Doyon acknowledges has had a “chilling effect” on the organization.

Posted on May 15, 2012 at 6:43amI find it hard to believe too. I mean, there are some government networks which are not even accessible via the internet. It sounds like someone who doesn’t know how some things work is just trying to brag and induce fear. That or there is a vast array of traitors at the highest levels of government….

Then let the enhanced interrogation and waterboarding begin until he flips on everyone that ever supplied him with the data and then start on those people.
Once the info has been “obtained”, off to the Colorado SuperMax with all of them and throw away the key.

Posted on May 14, 2012 at 5:22pmI believe in everything this country has to offer, I love the bill of rights and so on, but I have to agree with these people. I am a computer geek, pick on me if you want, but most Americans are fed up with the corrupt system on both sides. Call me what you want, I work and pay taxes, but my hobby is building computers. I love information, I love to learn, if that is wrong then crucify me. I love the lord and the lord gave me knowledge of technology, or the 1‘s and 0’s. The bad part is the people that use that knowledge they have to scam people. A couple bad apples always seems to ruin the bushel

Posted on May 15, 2012 at 4:06pmThe problem is, once opsec is broken, the information is available to one and all. The other problem is, government is no longer concerned with the limitations of the Constitution. This is why we the people have to stand on the necks of politicians, that‘s why we are ’supposed to be’ choosy about our leaders. That’s why the Marxist indoctrination which has been going on since 1910 and before was not tolerated until 1967 when the Supreme Court overturned itself on several issues including the idealism test of college professors. We literally have the top dog placing enemy agents in control of our Pentagon‘s and government agencies’ training manuals with respect to dealing with Muslims and Islam. These enemies have access to sensitive information. Now, Anonymous has demonstrated the ability to hack the president’s own email. They have managed to deny service for hours on end to CIA and FBI websites. While they may have done a few wonderful things, they are doing much more harm than good. If they are unwilling to align with some accountable organization, they are vigilante and deserve the justice of vigilantism. They are as lawless as their accused and deserve no more respect than their accused.

Posted on May 14, 2012 at 5:06pmI don’t doubt they have access to SOME sensitive data but “classified” data (especially SECRET and above) aren’t exposed to unclassified networks and all file access is logged by user/IP address. A “secure” OS is NOT an area you want to be be-bopping around in; users are granted SPECIFIC access rights for the specific information they require (need-to-know) and access violations are recorded and flagged. …unless, of course, the culture has been corrupted there as it has apparently been in the Secret Service – if THAT’s the case, the barn doors have been left open and all bets are off.

Posted on May 14, 2012 at 8:09pmThere is no way they can get access to all of the governments databases. This anon guy doesn’t have a clue about the classified networks. He would have to have the crypto devices and the keys, which get changed all the time, for every domain/network/system. Even trator Manning had to burn disks and carry the information out.

Posted on May 15, 2012 at 7:44amActually his quote, which is a little bit garbled, is meant to say that the average ANON guy is NOT a 10 to 12 hour ANON worker like himself but, rather, works a full-time job, then the porn, THEN they skim ANON headlines. So essentially, what you are saying.

Posted on May 14, 2012 at 4:58pmDon’t be too quick to dismiss his claims. I am sure that there is some bragging, and chest puffing, by Anonymous.
But the computer world is often a dismal place. I’m not talking about software designers or people working in the cutting edge, but instead the millions of underappreciated, underpaid workers who maintain servers, manage databases, or fix the problems that mental midgets (non techies) like us get into with their computers.
They might think a little mischief is just what the doctor ordered, and individually it might not amount to much, but collectively it can be a real disaster.
The other side of the coin is the real danger these people are in. If they possess real secrets involving powerful goverements, then it stands to reason that those goverments will do somthing about it to keep those secrets. I don’t think China will “arrest” Anonyomous agents that threaten to release classified military, or political secrets. They will just send a few agents to make these threats Anonymous…permanently.

Posted on May 14, 2012 at 4:56pmMatters of National Security are designed so that people and organizations have seperate systems thereby assuring that no one person has access to more than a few databases. These black budget programs are not about to be hacked by these amatuers. Any entry the might think they have is a ruse to help monitor the attackers. Anyone getting close to gaining real entry would find themselves in a cold dark place with no facebook or video games LOL. This stuff is not for kids with smilyfaced masks.

If you read the article, the guy mentions that almost none of this was done through hacking; it was done through disgruntled employees or people fed up with covering up illegal activities, who willingly gave their log-in and password out. By your line of reasoning, what’s to stop these folks from giving out your personal information even without Anonymous?
