Another Solar Power Company Lays off Hundreds of Workers

“Just seven months after California-based solar power company Amonix Inc. opened its largest manufacturing plant, in North Las Vegas, the company’s contractor has laid off nearly two-thirds of its workforce,” reports the Las Vegas Sun.

“Flextronics Industrial, the Singapore solar panel manufacturer that partnered with Amonix to staff the new $18 million, 214,000-square-foot plant, laid off about 200 of its 300-plus employees Tuesday,” according to the report.

Eric Culberson, Amonix’s director of manufacturing operations, claims that the mass firings are a necessary part of “retooling” the factory so that the company can “roll out its next-generation product.”

“The new 8700 utility-scale CPV solar power system is a higher efficiency and lower cost,” Culberson said. “Once it is ready, we will ramp back up to meet the demands of the industry.”

Culberson says the job cuts are “temporary and expects to begin hiring more people in the second half of the year to meet demand.”

However, given that layoffs were made at all levels of the company — from entry-level assemblers, process engineers, production supervisors and quality-control techs, according to one employee — and that the company was hiring as recently as three months ago, the firings seem very odd.

They were hiring “production supervisors” and “process engineers” and then promptly fired them?

Many critics contend that no normal, long-lasting business would operate in this manner. Indeed, the time and money it would cost to hire and train new employees (once that market “demand” goes up) would far outweigh the cost of, say, scaling back current employee’s hours.

Unless, of course, the company has no intention of ever hiring new staff and the “we’ll rehire soon enough” promise is far from factual, the firings, from a financial point of view, make very little sense.

One employee, Theodore Lewis, was working at the plant for six months before he and several other employees were called into a “mandatory meeting” Tuesday.

“There was no excuse,” said Lewis, who was never told his job was temporary. “They just said our job was done.”

Lewis said he and other staff members were “confused and disappointed” when they heard the news and were told by human resources to “look for other local jobs in retail,” according to the report.

The firings and mass layoffs are contradictory to what was promised when the plant first opened its doors, namely, to bring hundreds of clean energy jobs and boost the local economy.

In fact, the plant was praised as a success earlier this month by Mayor Shari Buck in her state of the city address. But despite the recent layoffs, Buck said she has “faith the company will bring back the jobs.”

“They were temporary employees brought in to handle a major project,” she said.

Wait. Two-thirds of  the company’s workforce was “temporary”?

“Amonix is taking the opportunity to automate their system better and get ready for the next big project. I expect Amonix to continue to be successful and have a great future in their solar production,” Buck said.

Her words are reminiscent of the warm praise President Obama had for the company in 2010.

“A solar panel company — a solar power company called Amonix received a roughly $6 million tax credit for a new facility they’re building in the Las Vegas area, a tax credit they were able to match with roughly $12 million in private capital,” Obama said, while touting his policy of subsidizing green-tech companies, according to the Daily Caller.

“The only problem we have is these credits were working so well, there aren’t enough tax credits to go around,” Obama said. “When we announced the program last year, it was such a success we received 500 applications requesting over $8 billion in tax credits, but we only had $2.3 billion to invest.”

Yes, it’s true: Amonix was given a $5.9 million investment tax credit through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) in 2010, and another $12 million in private capital helped finance the plant.

Therefore, much like Solyndra and Willard & Kelsey Solar Group LLC, Amonix appears to be the latest among a growing number of “green energy” initiatives that have failed to make good on the promise to create jobs — despite having received generous financial support and the White House’s blessing.

    This is how they are redistributing money. What if this is how they are covering up paying back entities we are aware of? What can explain this bizarre waste and carnage?

    OUR MONEY. 15.6 million plus went to this group.

    Here is the TRUTH about solar. It is insanely expensive to build any kind of VT or other solar power delivery because building enough arrays to power the masses would be bigger than our national debt plus. Plus delivery is a problem because we are all mostly on the grid so the transition would be billions. We ARE NOT YET able to economically deliver solar power to any great benefit. But, it does work if you want to go off the grid completely. Did you know we can make our own solar panels? Yep. The other nasty thing, the government wants control of it, so the private market for this is out of sight. So, our alien president went out and made deals with Spain and others to come here and start the trend. He gave Spain and Germany and others, the work and then he thought that he would promote start up supply companies for these companies. Well, ummm, right now all the supplies are being brought in from Europe, and VT solar power is NOT the kind of solar being done. Obama, you screwed up badly. Folks, we should not let this go!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Oh really? There are solar arrays popping up all over the country as well as wind farms. A small village of several thousand near me is installing an array to provide electricity to the village and selling the excess to the local power company. They are designing new building with solar arrays on the roof to provide their electrical needs. If you would get you information from other than righty right media, you would know this. Problem is that due to the Bush Administration’s marraige to the oil industry and resulting delays and obstruction in incentivizing this industry China supassed us and now we are buying from them. The Bush Administration sat on the Solynda project for over 3 years until it was a gamble at best. It also set the US back 8 years on wind turbine manuufacturing.

      And while you are telling us the name of that village, you can also tell us SPECIFICALLY how it is that the evil Bush set us back 8 years in wind turbine technology and SPECIFICALLY how the lack of the use of TAXPAYER money created a Solyndra that was a “gamble at best”.
      If we use your logic, it is George Bush’s fault that the U.S. has not developed a perpetual motion machine.
      If ANY of these pipe dreams were economically feasible someone in the private sector would be all over it. Throwing taxpayer dollars at something does not mean it will be successful……….Look at the dollars that we gave to the school that created YOU.

      Please tell us the TECHNOLOGY that China developed on their own that allowed them to “surpass” us.
      China couldn’t even get their missiles to fly straight until Bill Clinton allowed Loral to give them guidance technology.

      The Keystone XL Pipe line itself may end up being jobs for china, again. Some how American have to come to grips with the terms ‘energy’ and ‘conservation.’ And just use the lowest carbon foot print fuel for the application.

      Until nuclear fusion can be controlled like nuclear fission has we will have to be creative about energy creation. The second law of Thermodynamics states energy can only be transformed from one state to another, it can not be created or destroyed. There is a catalyst for every energy transformation equal to that energy, effectively. Discovery of that catalyst for other forms of energy transformation would be a good thing.

      Solar is expensive to implement, you can’t deny this. The problem with these companies isn’t the product it is the idiots in charge. If you want a company to be successful you take Democrats out from being in charge. We already know they have no business sense.

      I agree the Green jobs initiative is nothing but a money laundering scheme to fund Democrats pet projects. This is their way around the pork bills and earmarks.

      Johnson & Johnson built a field(5 Acres) like this back in the late 80′s at there facility in Sherman, Texas.They spent over a million $$ of their own money – no Gov. grants back then. They hired the best engineers in the country to run it. It was a loseing propisition back then. It was figured out to be a 30 + year point to break even. Never made it over 5 years since a baseball sze hail storm finished it off.

      No company with plans to ramp up production in the near future fires most of it’s employees. If this company was to be believed then they’d have temporarily laid off their employees with appropriate re-hire stipulations and compensation…there are no reports that this has taken place. Bottom line…if you’re looking to ramp up production and “retooling” the company, you don’t fire most of your workforce, you use them to get the job done faster.

Curious that isn’t it? Let’s examine Spain as an example of a “green” economy. Spain is currently at the cusp of defaulting. It has 21% unemployment with the numbers for youth unemployment teetering in the fifty percentile range. They’ve lost 2.2 good jobs for every 1 “green” job (many of which are temporary jobs anyway). The government will be subsidizing “green” jobs for the foreseeable future..or at least until Spain defaults. Yes SMARTASS….“green” is flourishing all over the globe…LOL.

      The fuel cell had to be removed. They were didn’t realize they were slowly educating us on green house gases and that the number 1 greenhouse gas is water vapor. The only thing given off in fuel cells. oops!

    I know exactly how they feel, I lost my job, at a solar company, just before Thanksgiving, they told us “you all still have jobs..” before we left, it‘s now almost February and we haven’t heard a word from them.

    One thing I would like to see the stats on is how many of the far left, the ones crying about global warming and what-not actually use the alternative/renewable energy sources they are so ready to cram down our throats.
    I would bet the numbers are slim.
    Liberals have always been the “do as I say, not as I do..” type of people.

    Hey Glenn, tell your writers that this is not an anti-Obama news story no matter how hard they try to distort the facts. Some businesses do fail for any host of legitimate reasons as Solyndra did, but this one is just making temporary layoffs while productions changes are made. I retired from the largest manufacturer in the world and this happened on a regular basis.

      I am so glad that you have shown us your attitude again. I don’t mind Green energy, but it needs to stand on it’s own. Thomas Edison, there is a name you should look up. There was no government support. Gas lights were perfectly acceptable. When the next generation of power is where the DOLLARS are everybody will be down with that. We need to get our power from every source that we can at this moment. Let the American public drill everywhere they can find oil ant tell the Arabs choke on their oil. Build refineries, since we haven’t built one in over thirty five years. Oh, I know what you are going to say, “Will I let them build one in my back yard?” Build it in the front and find something better. I believe in Green energy. I wish that it would work I would invest tomorrow. I already have. I put up twice the number of solar panels on my house to heat my pool and hot water for the house, so kiss my back side. The day that we can build a car for the American public, in General, that doesn’t cost more than $100,000 to build and sell for $70,000, which is stupid, I would love to have one. Oh, by the way, do you own one yet?

      See how SMARTASS is utterly clueless and wants to change the discussion? “Companies go out of business for legitimate reasons” as if anyone questioned that Solyndra’s bad business model sent it into bankruptcy? No SMARTASS….that’s not the point. The point is that analyst and auditor after analyst and auditor robustly warned against investing in Solyndra yet Obama’s administration- through his energy secretary Steven Chu- fell over itself to not only fasttrack hundreds of millions of dollars in loan guarantees to a company with no chance of surviving but- in an unprecedented move tailored to protect Obama campaign bundlers who had invested in Solyndra – Chu subordinated the loan guarantee to make sure Obama’s bundler got out with this $75 million while the tax payer is left on the hook. Now…I know you‘re a liberal idiot with absolutely no grasp of what I’ve just presented to you….but for the record..your misdirections, obfuscations and ignorant posts had to be addressed.

      So far the temp one quarter closing is in its second month. I just drove by flextronics today and not a single car in the parking lot. No guard in the guard shack. The place is completely shutdown. I guess SmartAss really knows all the facts.

      Sure hope b o and al gore never decide to team up on the GREEN ENERGY CIRCUIT! Can you imagine if they go to Phoenix to tout solar and speak about global warming? Sheriff Joe would have to issue the military style sub zero gear to tent city, and probably bring in back hoes to dig the tents out of the snow, THE PHOENIX BLACKOUTS WOULD BE PLAYING BASKETBALL IN PARKA’S FOR ALL HOME GAMES FOR THE NEXT 10 YEARS!

    Also wonder if there isn’t some sub-plot in this story. Maybe the company failed because they knew they were under investigation for shady funding and were about to the outed…hence they needed to go under asap.

      I dare say that your interpretation of the obama’s results as a “failure to help the economy” is fundamentally wrong.
      The obama’s TO-DO list never included a task to HELP the American economy to restore.
      Right opposite: His goal was/is/will be (if we don’t stop him) to “fundamentally tyransform the United States of Ameica” so it will be almost automatically and inevitably nationalized and socialized.

      I warned about it already in 2008.
