Another ‘Rev. Wright Moment’? Bachmann Officially Leaves Her Church

It’s been a busy week for Rep. Michele Bachmann’s presidential campaign. After fielding questions about her husband’s clinic, now the 2012 contender is facing curiosity about her church affiliation. CNN has more:
…shortly before announcing her White House bid, [Bachmann] officially quit a church she’d belonged to for years.
Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman, and her husband, Marcus, withdrew their membership from Salem Lutheran Church in Stillwater, Minnesota, last month, according to church officials.
The Bachmanns had been members of the church for more than 10 years, according to Joel Hochmuth, director of communications for the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod [WELS], the broader denominational body of which Bachmann’s former church is a member.
While some outlets are questioning why Bachmann and her husband separated from the church just six days before her campaign’s launch, Hochmuth confirmed that they had not been attending the congregation for at least two years.
Why does it matter, you ask? WELS has a relatively controversial take on the Catholic Church, which some believe was the catalyst behind Bachmann’s move to separate herself before she faced a highly-publicized, campaign-ravaging “Reverend Wright moment.” The Atlantic writes:
WELS is the most conservative of the major Lutheran church organizations, known for its strict adherence to the writings of Martin Luther, the German theologian who broke with the Catholic Church and launched the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. This includes endorsing Luther’s statements about the papacy. From the WELS “Doctrinal Statement on the Antichrist“:
Since Scripture teaches that the Antichrist would be revealed and gives the marks by which the Antichrist is to be recognized, and since this prophecy has been clearly fulfilled in the history and development of the Roman Papacy, it is Scripture which reveals that the Papacy is the Antichrist.
This, The Atlantic claims, may cause major barriers for the congresswoman as she seeks to secure the Republican ticket. This is not the first time, though, that this issue has arisen. The Los Angeles Times reports:
The matter has been tailing Bachmann for much of her political career. She was asked about the church’s statement in 2006, when she was running for Congress.
“It’s abhorrent, it’s religious bigotry,” Bachmann said then. “I love Catholics, I’m a Christian, and my church does not believe that the pope is the antichrist, that’s absolutely false.”
In another piece entitled, “Michele Bachmann’s Reverend Wright Moment,” New York Magazine’s DailyIntel blog takes an opportunity to exploit the situation for laughs — at Bachmann’s expense, of course:
The actual reasoning behind the “antichrist” language is a somewhat complicated theological argument involving lots of historical detail about the Protestant Reformation. We’d summarize it, but we’re waiting for the Michele Bachmann version, which will hopefully involve Martin Luther’s move to Iowa and his bravery fighting demons in the battle of Concord, New Hampshire.
It is entirely possible that Bachmann has, indeed, separated herself from the church because of its controversial statements on Catholicism. Perhaps she was previously unaware of WELS’s written stance and after discovering it in 2006, she may have begun to separate from the house of worship. Either way, her past words on the matter and her associated actions (leaving the church) are not necessarily contradictory.
Regardless of the reasoning for her departure, WELS’s written doctrine is going to provide plenty of fodder for individuals who oppose Bachmann, her policies and her faith.

That’s odd Martin Luther taught that Jesus Christ was a fornicator who had committed adultery with the Samaritan Woman at the well and Mary Magdalene. He also wrote the best selling book “The Jews and Their Lies”.

It‘s a big deal because BO’s pastor hated America. For a man to attend a church for 20 years that spews hate against the country he aspires to be President of, is just plain wrong. Bachmann hadn’t been attending for 2 years, so she may not have been as involved with the Pastor (and remeber, BO’s pastor married him and Michelle, baptized both their kids, he was tight with him).

But when we’re talking about a person who may become the President of the United States, it becomes an issue the people want to know about. You or I can choose whatever we believe but if you step into office, what you believe becomes scrutinized because your beliefs are a reflection of the kind of person you are and that matters when your may represent a greater body of people than just yourself.

Born in error and heresy? Surely you jest. The whole Catholic religion began with Constantine and his perversion of the Christian faith mingling with Roman godlessness. Not to mention the centuries of outright narcissism and deceit from the Catholic religion. The very founding of America is directly due to the Catholic religion. Report Post »Shame on us for bashing one another! Before we judge the works of brethren like Luther, start w/ your own works. The truth is that w/out the reformation we’d still be “listening” to the Word in Latin, and the Word would be reserved for the elites! Praise Jesus for men like Luther and Calvin and Huss. Despite their flaws, they yielded to the Holy Spirit and restored the Gospel and Salvation by Grace and Grace alone (Ephesians 2:8-10) to its rightful and glorious place. The ignorance of what the Church is (namely the bride of Christ) is understandable from the world. But amongst believers it’s disheartening. Nearly all denominations have problems (read Revelation 2 & 3 and Jesus’ own critique in His 7 letters). Its true that the spirit of antichrist (which is what St. John wrote of when he used the term in 1&2 John) has infiltrated the Catholic “church”. But make no mistake it has infiltrated nearly all denominations – and will rule the apostate church. Who would have thought in the 1800s that come the 2000’s the episcopal “church” would be ordaining openly gay clergy? Have they not read Romans? You don’t need the HS to discern what the word of God says about sexual immorality (of any kind). And whom is a stronger defender of the unborn amongst Christians than the Catholics? Where did all of our great hospitals come from?

So before we go around judging one another I humbly suggest we yield to the Lord we say we serve and judge ourselves (Matthew 7:1-6; Luke 6:36-42). St. Paul warned us to work out our own salvation w/ fear and trembling in Philippians 2). All have sinned (including all of us) and fallen short of God’s glory, and that goes for Luther as well as the Pope (all of them). We all have feet of clay. Heresy needs to be stamped out w/in the Church, but attacking the brethren is not the way to do it. We need to clean up our own side of the street before we worry about our neighbors.

Posted on July 15, 2011 at 10:53pmAs a Christian, I am concerned with the amount of importance a candidates religion is being given.
I ask you to think about this: Do you really want a President that might be primarily motivated by what may end up being “What would Jesus do?”
The only one that would know for sure would be Jesus Himself. If he actually was the President I am absolutely certain that His solutions for problems and issues would leave us in complete awe and amazement.
On the other hand, I see plenty of Christians that seemingly can’t figure out “What would Jesus do?” in interacting with their own neighbors. If you took a hundred Christians and presented them with the issues facing a President, you would probably get a hundred different solutions and I’m pretty sure that all of them would be inferior to what Jesus Himself would decide.
It is fine, even preferable, for a President to be a Christian in my view. I want them to be primarily motivated by reason, empathy, experience, knowledge of history, politics, and diplomacy, and LIGHTLY guided by faith.
How much damage can a President do if they do ask “What Would Jesus Do?” and they get the answer wrong?
Be very careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

Christ committed adultery first of all with the woman at the well about whom St. John tells us. Was not everybody about Him saying: “Whatever has he been doing with her?” Secondly, with Mary Magdalene, and thirdly with the woman taken in adultery whom he dismissed so lightly. Thus even Christ, who was so righteous, must have been guilty of fornication before He died.

Mrs. Bachman is a popularity hound and will change her colors to fit the environment. I am sure she has the best of intentions. I do believe she is a patriot and a great person. but does she have what it takes to stand up to the ridicule and scrutiny of the american people, maybe, but can she have that “titanium backbone” she claims to have when it comes time to stare down the FED, the establishment government professionals and big money demanders? I think not? She has problems in the integrity department on a few issues to include history. It is more important to her to be popular and liked than to be accurate and knowledgable.
I am not for Sara for president either, although like most people say “ she would be better at it than mr obama” But that doesnt mean much in my book. My dog would make a better leader than than the treasonous liar we currently have. Sara would make a great Patriot Party Leader. Listen, if we expect to have a country that even closely reflects what the founders intended, we need to speak what we KNOW, not what we picked up along the way. Luther said no such things. And as for Luther hating the jews, it is important when judging history not to do so through current history, but to do so in the contect of the times in which we are investigating. As a Jew (ethnically) I hate what happen in German. But to judge Luther through the lens of modern times is wrong. The reality is, one must understand Theology to understand Luthers meaning in the controversial words he has written. But to say the Jews are an enemy of Christ, is only repeat the words of the apostle Paul. Does this mean one hates the Jews? No, it does not have to mean that. Jewish theology is anti Chritian when it comes to Christ life, death, and ressurection. To simply regard Luther as antisemetic is simplistic. Please lets seek to understand what it is we are speaking on.

Obama took weeks and finally offered a feeble, politically motivated separation. Bachman’s policies, words, and political philosophy stand in strong contrast to “anti catholic” rhetoric. Obama’s policies and actions remain fully aligned with the social justice, liberation theology, “God damn America”, anti-Israel, racism towards whites, that was spewed from “Rev.” Wright’s pulpit for the two decades Obama marinated in his pews. HE is a Communist, Marxist and HE HATES America as it was founded, remember, a vote for him is a vote for Fundamental change. I think we ALL know now what he meant! Get him out of office and tried for treason! Electing ANY other candidate from the GOP will be a step back into reality, especially with the People’s threat to get rid of ALL who refuse to refuse to balance the budget and eliminate the spending on programs Obummer wanted. Remember, if we defund these tax and spend programs, we eliminate the long-term debt and can get back on track much more quickly. Our goal is to Get the Communist out of office, it does NOT matter who replaces him! In this story, Bachmann does NOT come close to equating to Wright’s theology, there is no story here, except to kill politics completely! Those who try to sensationalize what Bachmann has done are NOT Christians, they are in fact working for the other side, yes, Satan! Just in case you don’t understand. Only Satan wants these kind of arguments, the ole divide and conquer routine. Let us vote with ONE voice, whoever is chosen to go against Obama gets my vote! This country has seen enough Marxist Communism. First order of business once elected MUST be to overturn ALL spending plans Obummer put in place, if it takes executive order to do so!

It’s pretty clear now that she won’t be able to raise a substantial amount of money as a presidential candidate. It’s also 100% clear that the people who donated to her campaign in 2010 didn’t want her to run for the presidency.

Yes — that’s right — it’s great for women to get counseling at wonderful, caring Planned Parenthood about how they need abortions to make them happy & solve their problems – which leads to murder & grief/suffering/regret for the rest of the mom’s life (I was a former counselor at a pregnancy crisis clinic doing the opposite & I suppose they would think that’s awful too). Re gays – there’s much ignorance & confusion out there — there are many testimonies from very GRATEFUL gays who have been counseled by Christians & helped immensely. With God’s help, they’re “delivered” one way or another, lose the desire for the same sex and or able to live with it and be happy. But the “world” doesn’t understand any of that & that’s the main reason it continues & grows, creating more and more problems for themselves & others as well.

Posted on July 15, 2011 at 8:17pmRead I John about “the antichrist”. It is a term that strictly speaking does not exist. The Bible says “many antichrists have gone out into the world.“ The Antichrist is better said ”the man of sin, the son of perdition” as he is described in II Thessalonians 2. the prefix ‘anti’ in greek can mean ‘opposite’ but also ‘in place of’. There are many many things in our culture/society that qualify as “antichrist”, just as an idol doesn’t have to be a statue. Ms Bachmann‘s resignation is something that doesn’t bother me in the least as denominationalism demands alleigance to its tenets whether they actually line up with what the Word says or not, making some of them “antichrist” if they don’t. I don’t presume to know what exactly caused her to drop her “membership” with the Lutherans, but because she has done so doesn’t mean she has stopped being Christian. Contary to what some may say if a person has declared Jesus to be Lord and believes in their heart that God has raised him from the dead, they are Christian and therefore my brother or sister.

Posted on July 15, 2011 at 4:26pmThe Catholic Church has made a lot of mistakes (both in terms of theology and politics) but the “antichrist” is very odd. As I recall a pope conspired with Reagan to liberate Eastern Europe from communism — not a very “antichrist” type of move.
