‘Anti-Arizona’ Immigration Bill Passes Calif. Senate

California Senate Passes Anti Arizona Immigration Bill AB1081

(The Blaze/AP) – Illegal immigrants arrested for committing minor offenses in California will be exempt from status checks by local police if a bill now approved by the state Senate becomes law.

San Francisco Democratic Assemblyman Tom Ammiano said he wrote AB1081 because a federal policy requiring local law enforcement to check the immigration status of an arrestee wastes resources and erodes trust.

It passed 21-13 Thursday on party lines. The bill has already passed the Democrat-controlled state Assembly and will go back to the Assembly for a concurrence vote before landing on Gov. Jerry Brown’s desk. He is a Democrat.

Under the bill, officers would only refer people convicted of serious felonies to immigration officials. They would no longer detain lower-level offenders on immigration holds.

The bill has been dubbed “anti-Arizona” legislation, a reference to Arizona’s “show me your papers” law recently upheld by the Supreme Court, which requires police officers to check the immigration status of people they stop if they have reasonable suspicion they are in the country illegally.

“Today’s vote signals to the nation that California cannot afford to be another Arizona,” Ammiano said in a statement. ”The bill also limits unjust and onerous detentions for deportation in local jails of community members who do not pose a threat to public safety.”

Reuters reports the bill has the support of roughly 100 immigrant rights groups, police chiefs and mayors.

Critics say Arizona’s law may lead to racial profiling of Hispanics in the state. Meanwhile, advocates argue the federal government has failed to secure the U.S. border, leaving the state vulnerable to drug smuggling and cartel violence.

California currently has the largest population of illegal aliens in the U.S., with 2.6 million in 2010, Reuters reports.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Apparently California can’t AFFORD to be California either. Are they on the brink of bankruptcy?

As a Arizona resident, I’d just like to say if they really want to express their displeasure with us, they should start by refusing to do business with us. I’m sure we can find someone else to buy all that WATER and ELECTRICITY we supply them with.

    Dingbats!

Ship your (Arizona’s) illegal immigrants to California. It’d be cheaper than detaining them and trying to work with the Feds that said they would not. Put up signs on the Arizona border advertising Arizona‘s strict immigration laws and California’s lax ones.

It gets worse. There is a school, less than a mile away, that is all “Hispanic” that has more kids in it than mine. They are taught in Spanish, and English is taught as a separate class.

Why don‘t they just send Az’s illegals an invitation.
Now sherriff Joe can ship them his detainees.
That should make the attorney general

We (Arizona) and California have never seen eye to eye on much of anything, especially illegal immigration. Their prisons are so full that they are releasing thousands early every month. The crime rate there is the worst in the nation, and with this they are inviting even more to come in…unbelievable !!!!! I imagine they are doing this so they can get a lot of our tax dollars to bail them out of their own stupidity. Good riddance Cali.

We need to give California back to Mexico! They would probably take it but we need to stipulate that the few Companies left can still operate their business. I would have liked to take my grandsons to see the Sequias and go to Disney but have heard that if pulled over and your car don’t meet specs it can be impounded. It will be repaired at your expense and they take it to preferred shops that give kickbacks to state officials. I met a truck driver that carried a shipment there and this nightmare happened to him. It cost him over $6,000.00 to get back out of the state.

That the demoncraps need to secure the illegal alien vote would be funny if it were a skit on snl back in ‘74. Today it is very frightening that a state legislature would vote against the Constitution, because that is exactly what they are doing

Yeah, it’s amazing. There were budget surpluses in Arizona BEFORE Nappy the LIberal Dem took office, deficits and lots of illegals collecting welfare benefits to go along with the deficits. Now, just a few years after Nappy headed to another job that she is completely unqualified for, Arizona is back in the black and the Illegals are leaving for other places. What seems to be the biggest change here? Oh yeah that would be crappy Nappy and her AG Terry Goddard no longer being in charge. Of course Nappy’s allies are trying to get rid of Sheriff Joe, Governor Brewer and AG Tom Horne. They managed to get Russell Pierce kicked out of the state senate. Arizonans need to take a long hard look at what the Dems have done for them lately.

California is already Mexico. I am glad they are welcoming more illegals and terrorists to their shores and not in my state. I am not anti immigration. I am apposed to those who think there are no laws that must be followed to get in. How our country has fallen. No country in the world has leaner immigration laws than the U.S. We are being rape of our resources and this administration doesn’t care. All they want is votes…………..

I don’t know anyone who is against LEGAL immigration, though I know plenty who are opposed to ILLEGAL aliens invading our shores.

I still think that each state (and especially AZ) can claim authority to fight the invasion of illegals using the clause in the Constitution as stated here –

      Article I Section 10 –

No State shall, without the Consent of Congress, lay any duty of Tonnage, keep Troops, or Ships of War in time of Peace, enter into any Agreement or Compact with another State, or with a foreign Power, or engage in War, UNLESS ACTUALLY INVADED, OR IN SUCH IMMINENT DANGER AS WILL NOT ADMIT OF DELAY.

      And also

Article IV Section 4 – Republican government

The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, AND SHALL PROTECT EACH OF THEM AGAINST INVASION; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.

Don’t get too overly excited. It’s worse than that. Officers risk their jobs if they told you what was really going on concerning illegals. The libs have all of their people in positions of supervision and that has been going on for over 20 years. Wish it wasn’t true. Americans are at the bottom of the list.

The closest state to CA would be what? When the illegals can’t get a job in CA, and they surely don’t want to return to MX, where exactly do you think they will go? Hint – AZ

California will do as California will do and Arizona will do as Arizona will do. At this point most likely with the border as it is and as it will be for at least a number of years to come, America will be transformed and may not even have the same national borders in the near future. At least people will be able to look back and say the transformation came about peacefully and by rule of law rather than by violence in other parts of the world.
