Anti-Walmart Flash Mob Turns Up at Store Demanding Pensions & Benefits for Employees…or Else

Anti Walmart Flash Mob in Maryland

What better way to help communities in need of work than to invoke an angry flash-mob targeting a major retailer that offers nearby residents… jobs?

Well, that is precisely what happened in Laurel, Maryland, when an activist group called “Respect DC” recently turned up at a local Walmart to deliver an ultimatum to the retail giant: give your employees high wages and top-notch benefits, or else. It is perhaps also worth noting that RDC’s politically-charged flash mob was promoted on the SEIU Youtube page.

To deliver its message, the group‘s medium was a jazz performance of Aretha Franklin’s famed song “R.E.S.P.E.C.T.” In the flash-mobber’s re-worked song lyrics, RDC apparently wants Walmart to promise, along with great pay and other benefits, retirement pensions for all its employees:

“What you want, Walmart you got it. What you need, you know we got it. All we’re asking is for a little respect if you come to D.C…. We ain’t gonna give you all our money, unless you give us some retirement, honey.”

According to RDC, Walmart needs to “show respect” to the neighborhoods in which the retail giant plans to open new stores by meeting with “community leaders” to whom it will “guarantee,” in writing no less, to “improve” the quality of life for its employees. The RDC website explains the intent of its flash mob:

More than 100 DC residents and members of our coalition held a flash mob at the Laurel, Md., Walmart, to demonstrate the depth of support for an enforceable community benefits agreement before the world’s largest retailer is allowed to enter the nation’s capital. Accompanied by a brass band and chorus, the participants sang out, “All we’re asking is for Respect (Prove you mean it)”.

Did they say “allowed?”

Watch the video of the flash mob below:

In fact, RDC’s sole mission as stated in its charter is to “educate” community leaders about Walmart’s “checkered” track record of:

…paying poverty-level wages, forcing competitors to close, causing a net loss of jobs, breaking its promises, and multiple lawsuits alleging that the company discriminates against female employees and engages in wage theft, including the the largest sex discrimination class action in U.S history.

RDC then goes on to literally “ensure” that “no Walmart” will be built in the D.C. metro area unless the advocacy group’s demands are met.

How the group intends to deliver on that promise, however, still remains unclear.

And some might argue that, just by its very presence, Walmart and similar retail chains improve quality of life for people in their respective communities by offering an abundance of job opportunities and by contributing to the local economy. Even if Walmart were to pay only minimum wage, can that really be considered “poverty-wages?”

One also wonders how a company that employs a reported 2 million people worldwide causes a “net loss” of jobs anywhere it operates.

Not surprisingly, RDC claimed one Walmart employee was “touched” by the group’s presence and public display of concern.

“When I saw the large crowd, heard the band and the words, I couldn’t believe it,” said Alan Barber, an associate at the Laurel Walmart, according to RespectDC.org. “But then to listen to their words — that associates should be respected, too — that really touched me, because we don’t get the respect we deserve at work. Management overworks and underpays us, and then makes things worse by creating a climate of fear so most associates are too afraid to demand better treatment.”

It might also be worth noting that RDC has yet to make similar demands on any other retailer, large or small. Does Walmart really deserve to be singled out? Or is it just a matter of time before Target and other non-unionized retailers are on the receiving end of an angry flash-mob?

My wife has worked for Wal-Mart for the past 20 years. She started as a cashier and worked in every position the store has, she is now the store manager! Wal-Mart is just like any other company out there, once you get hired you are in a probationary period to see if you’re going to work out…then guess what?? You will then be eligible for health benifits, stock matching, and 401K matching, these people have no clue. We consertivatives need to start planning time out of our WORK WEEKS to go protest some of their little get togethers!

      It’s almost time people!

Let the libs use up more gas, spewing carbon into the air. All to teach WMT a lesson. By the way, all those protesters look like they’re collecting unemployment!

You know, no matter where I’ve worked, there were times I felt very overworked, very under-valued, and certainly under-paid. But the truth of the matter is, if you don’t like it, then all you have to do is find a job at the Perfect-Utopian-MegaMart down the road. Oh wait, there isn’t one!
A job is a job, and there are very few people who get to have a job where they don’t have to work long hours, for little appreciation and certainly not quite enough to have a two-story house with a white picket fence, and a dog named Dave.
When WalMart opened in our town about 16 years ago, it brought in 250 jobs. The economy in the town was terrible before they got here. The poorest people had a terrible standard of living, because local stores would not or could not lower their prices (didn’t have to compete). When WalMart expanded into a super center, the job number jumped up to nearly 500. In a community of roughly 10,000 where the unemployment is higher than most other places in the state, that’s a pretty impressive number to employ.
In a community where the poorest folks had very little, WalMart brought very positive change. And with more people employed, and more money flowing around the community, more businesses have opened, and low and behold, there are more jobs here than before WalMart arrived. Wow, funny how that worked! Is WalMart perfect? No. But it isn’t the great-retail-Satan, either.
I wonder, if Wallies supported LGBT and other such things, would they be a such

Sam Walmart was a great businessman. He brought consumer goods to middle America at reasonable prices. I have shopped at Walmart for years for their low prices. My only complaint is that the goods of late come from foreign Countries.

I blame this on the private unions. They killed all manufacturing in the USA. I’m old enough to remember when you could buy a brand new car for $2,000 to $3,000.

Today, a brand new car costs ten times as much. The unions are mostly the blame for this, but also the environmental nuts caused the price of a car to skyrocket.

President Obama has tried to push this Nation into all electric cars. Can you imagine what the outcome would be if most of us had electric cars, AND the current “heat bubble” that we are now experiencing? Don‘t even mention that Obama doesn’t want the USA to drill for it’s own oil, or create it’s own energy. Obama prefers to re-distribute American wealth to other Countries.

I do know that there is a huge anti walmart crowd out there and I do not understand what the blow back is over. I had a conversation with a friend and they posed a question to me and I have yet to do any research tho the question made me think about the practice of walmart as a corp. They are one of the worlds largest employers and from what I understand, they offer crap for an employment benefits pkg. With the workforce they have seems they could obtain the best of everything as they buy at same time of volume. Something does smell a little here if this is correct. I do not believe a stock person should make 30.00 an hour tho….NO unions. I as well know from doing business with many product suppliers, if any part of your product, from manufacturing to packaging to shipping is not produced with eco and economic sustainably, you will NOT have a product on their shelf. If your box plant that produces boxes is not energy efficient,

“Crap” based on what standard? Do you presume that employment alone entitles one to a compensation package? If so, would you suggest giving sanctions to companies that don‘t or can’t afford to give these packages?

At this point with the recent acts of violence by flashmobs in stores etc they should be stopped immediately. It is the businesses right to do as they please and have every right to stop these “mobs”. The cutesy ones in pavilions, food courts etc are harmless. The ones popping up in stores like this have ulterior motives.

The radical left isnt very creative they have to steal something that is fun and entertaining and then turn it into a tactic of intimidation. You know folks there is no law saying the TEA party (take note of proper spelling!) or any patriotic conservative group to not give these radical organizations a dose of their own medicine!

I just dont get you America you constantly sit back complaining yet ALLOWING the left to get away with every single “assault” on this nation. By the time you start standing up against them it will be too late! At least Lt Col West has the guts to start throwing it back, whats your excuse?

Because it is not government’s place – or the place of a bloody socialist collective such as SEIU – to demand that a business provide anything to their employes more than a safe working environment.

Obamacare’s requirements are grossly dishonorable and so is this bull. At the point you start mandating things such as health care, pensions, and salary unto all businesses, you’re no longer a free market economy. You’re a national socialist market in all but name.

      Rifleman-

I agree with you. I am as conservative and constitutional as they come. My point was, at least they didn‘t show up at the manager’s home as they have before in the past. This was actually kind of funny. I don’t agree with any organized group forcing regulations on an individual business. I have a degree in Business Marketing (thus my lively hood depends on a capitalistic economy). That said, Walmart has had a lot of PR issues in the past stemming from its treatment of employees. I would rather the company resolve these issues on their own, than see its associates reach out to unions in hopes that such a move would force the company to meet their demands. And I am not just speaking about lack of benefits, I am talking about the company’s history of preferential treatment for promoting men over women when all other factors are equal. If a company wants to keep unions at bay, don’t fuel the fire and give employees the desire to seek such representation in the first place.

It was certainly their prerogative to do that. I think the manager was trying- who knows. I am honestly on the fence with Walmart. They add both value and destruction to a community. But, what I do know from prior research is that they really do not treat their employees very well.

Silo, the so-called “destruction” Moore-on speaks of is a free market natrually finding a balance. Moore-on should have talked about the massive amount of jobs just one Walmart brings to a community. Instead of praising competition (which lowers prices) Moore-on bashed it and made his agenda-driven film all about the small companies and their high prices the community had trouble affording anyway. Yeah the same small businesses that ironically leftys like him seek to destroy by the unnatural means of taxation. In this socialist-induced sluggish economy, we all need the lowest prices we can get.

      @ SILO

Retail is an inherently brutal business, because the demands for cheap goods forces businesses to work employees hard for low wages to maintain profit. I know this well, I used to be an assistant manager for a Family Dollar store. It is the nature of the business world: the less education and formal training you have, the more reliant you are on baser human skills suck as strength and repetition. This is also why I am a computer technician and not a Retail Asst Mgr now.
