AP Analyzes ‘Days of Rage’: ‘It’s Unclear Exactly What the Demonstrators Want’

Associated Press Says Its Unclear Exactly What the Demonstrators Want

Below, find the Associated Press’ analysis of the Days of Rage protest:

NEW YORK (AP) — The dozens of people in tie-dyed T-shirts and star-spangled underwear have been camped out in a granite plaza in lower Manhattan for more than a week — and show no signs of going away.

They sleep on air mattresses, use Mac laptops and play drums. They go to the bathroom at the local McDonald’s. A few times a day, they march down to Wall Street, yelling, “This is what democracy looks like!”

It all has the feel of a classic street protest with one exception: It’s unclear exactly what the demonstrators want:

“When all the bailout money was spent on bonuses and stuff everyone was outraged, but no one did anything because no one feels like they can,” protester Jesse Wilson, 22, said this week when asked to take articulate the cause. “It’s time for us to come together to realize we are the masses, and we can make things happen.”

But he couldn’t say what, exactly, he wanted to happen. Handmade signs carried by some of the demonstrators — “Less is More” and “Capitalism is evil” — hardly make it clearer.

But does it matter that the protest is vague?

Academics and longtime activists give varying opinions.

“A lot of this revolves around economic justice, who gets what in this society, who has a safety net, who doesn’t and how much corporate influence exists in Washington,” said Bill Dobbs, an activist involved in the 2004 demonstrations at the Republican National Convention, and many others.

Dobbs and others say the group’s lack of specificity serves a purpose because it invites outrage over a full spectrum of societal grievances. Indeed, some demonstrators say they are against Wall Street greed, others say they are protesting global warming and still others say they are protesting “the man.”

The modern protester also expects an immediate response, thanks in part to technology, said Gabriella Coleman, a New York University professor of media, culture and communication who has studied some of the groups affiliated with the protest.

“We are in a cultural moment where people think the dictator will topple tomorrow, after four days of protests, and also the media is going to jump to pay attention,” Coleman said.

There has been a growing swell of coverage in mainstream media, but there has been loud complaining the cause hasn’t been championed fast enough — or in the way protesters want.

Newspapers, The Associated Press and television stations have covered the protests, and editorials have both poked fun and lauded the effort downtown. National Public Radio, which hasn’t aired stories, has fielded angry communiques demanding coverage.

“The recent protests on Wall Street did not involve large numbers of people, prominent people, a great disruption or an especially clear objective,” Dick Meyer, executive editor for news, explained on NPR’s website.

But observers say the approach can be difficult for media — and the average person — to digest.

“You should have a clear and convincing message, and know who is going to deliver it,” said the Rev. Herbert Daughtry, a longtime civil rights activist who has participated in protests for decades. “One of the reasons to get attention is to deliver the message.”

Associated Press Says Its Unclear Exactly What the Demonstrators WantMisinformation has added to the confusion. For instance, a rumor sprang up on Twitter that the New York Police Department wanted to use tear gas on protesters — a crowd-control tactic the department doesn’t use. The organizing group that calls itself Occupy Wall Street retracted the claim, one of several such retractions over the past several days. On Friday, it sent out a message that Radiohead would be performing in solidarity for the cause. (The band‘s management said it wasn’t playing.)

Clashes with police have resulted in about 100 arrests. Most were for disorderly conduct. Many were the subject of homemade videos posted online.

One video surfaced of a group of girls shot with pepper spray by NYPD Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna. The woman claimed they were abused and demanded the officer resign, and the video has been the subject of several news articles and commentary. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said internal affairs would look into whether Bologna acted improperly and has also said the video doesn’t show “tumultuous” behavior by the protesters. The Civilian Complaint Review Board is also investigating.

A group affiliated with protest, Anonymous, later posted Bologna’s personal details, including where his kids go to school. He has received threatening e-mails, said a police union spokesman, Roy Richter.

“Posting the information about a family police officer … that’s egregious and over the line,” Richter said.

Coleman explained the move was likely the work of one or two individuals not acting on behalf of the entire movement, since the handle Anonymous is not a collective group that makes decisions together on how to act.

“A tactic like that has been received anywhere from controversy to celebration, because someone took action to the police’s action,” she said.

A real estate firm that owns Zuccotti Park, the private plaza off Broadway occupied by the protesters, has expressed concerns about conditions there, saying in a statement that it hopes to work with the city to restore the park “to its intended purpose.” But it’s not clear whether legal action will be taken, and police say there are no plans to try to remove anyone.

“We see it as our job to make certain that people can demonstrate peacefully,” Kelly said.

Mostly, the protests have been peaceful, and the movement has shown no signs of losing steam. Celebrities like Michael Moore and Susan Sarandon even made recent stops downtown to encourage the group.

Seasoned activists said the ad-hoc protest could prove to be a training ground for future organizers of larger and more cohesive demonstrations, or motivate those on the sidelines to speak out against injustices.

“You may not get much, or any of these things on the first go-around,” Daughtry said. “But it’s the long haul that matters.”

I saw enough of these guys interviewed on the street to conclude that they neither know what they are protesting nor what they want. This is an opportunity for them to do a little urban camping and obtain a little notoriety from the media. Didn’t see much rage.

As long as they are going to be there for a while, some nice conservative group should put together some reading material for them. Educate them as to how many BILLIONS the US gives away–either directly or through other agencies (IMF!)– to impoverished nations and peoples. Show them what other more socialist nations give in comparison…. Then follow the money trail backwards as to where (besides China) all of those US tax dollars come from.

Actually, perhaps they are not getting much msm coverage because even the left doesn’t want to be associated with them. They are embarrassingly lacking coherence and leadership–perhaps someone in the wings is working on it….

I find this very interesting. I have checked out the the various new sites and they all have different points of view. What I am seeing and reading is quite clear. The protestors sound a lot like the Tea Party in that they want to stop wars and nation building, stop crony capitalism, go back to the constitution, kick out the bought and paid for politicians..etc. I really don’t see anything more sinister going on. Fox paints then as nuts, but I see them as fed up. I think Beck got this one wrong. Read the signs and stop listening to the Corporate Fox propaganda. Read, Listen, and make up your own mind. Sounds like a Tea Party rally to me.

They want a total breakdown of civilization, so that the Fed goes in to “save the day and protect our peaceful way of life” by instituting Marshall law and perhaps detaining thousands in the camps all ready set up with adjoining railroad tracks. The answer is obvious , Wall Street and the Government are one and the same.. The middle class is being attacked while FedReserve member banks and their counterparties soak up $16Trillion in our funds destroying the value of any savings. We haven’t had any meaningful oversight in decades .. When you give entities who have no moral center and no oversight absolute power you can expect bad things to happen. This is generalized rage (very muted but deepseated rage) because we quite literally have no control over our destiny and the answer isn’t a BIGGER BADDER central government but rather individual empowerment… That requires a revolution … drastic reductions in the size of government.

The best example of this is how we have allowed these banks to destroy land title in America … nobody owns anything anymore as title chains are damaged beyond repair… and banks are foreclosing on properties that they have NO economic interest in as they have sold and been paid on the loans years ago first when they sold the loans to create bonds/certificates , then again when the various bailouts came out of OUR pocket and yet again (up to 30X face value on the loans) with insurance (AIG and others) and swaps (once again backstopped by the Fed Reserve)…

Bonus: Charlie Rangel tried to address the crowd and was promptly chased off by an irate protester.

(NY Post) — A horde of Wall Street demonstrators shut down the Brooklyn Bridge for 2 1/2 hours this afternoon, halting traffic and clashing as cops arrested as many as 700 on the famed span’s roadway.

About 100 cars were left stranded as the loud, angry crowd covered the crossing from end to end in an inflamed day of demonstrations against high unemployment, bank bailouts and financial pain for the masses.

One irate driver, a Ground Zero construction worker, blasted the pedestrians.

“I work my ass off all day, and these goddamned hippies close down the Brooklyn Bridge so I can’t get home?” he said. “This ain’t right!”…

Embattled Congressman Charlie Rangel tried to lend his support but was chased away by a heckler.

Rangel had begun an informal speech to the crowd when a man started taunting him, and then coming towards him, witnesses said.

City Councilman Charles Barron (D-Brooklyn) was standing nearby as the incident unfolded.

“Charlie was saying how they need to have more people down here to support this. That’s why he was there,” Barron told The Post. “This heckler came out of the crowd and went after him.”

As Rangel, who was unhurt, backed away from the pushy protestor the crowd came to his rescue, swamping the heckler and chanting in response: “Everyone has the right to speak.” Weasel Zippers.com

There needs to be a tea party to infiltrate. Several Gadsden flags or something. This this would turn into the most evil thing and the media will turn very fast. All the violence will be the fault of the tea party. They will be called racists and not need being listened to.

It just full that when thousands protested Washington from the right with no real message the media hated them but when a few thousand protest in NYC from the left with no real message and hundreds of arrests the media does not say boo.

No Kidding! They voted for a socialist, who continued the socialist bailouts–up until that point everybody was happy. Then lo-and-behold– the bailout money never got down to the little guy! What a surprise! For all of you protesters who only know “socialism” as a concept, an ideal for which to strive–you now have a real life example of how it actually works. What happened with the bailout money IS socialism. That’s how it works. The money never filters through to the little guy.

@Steelhead — no not more end-times talk, I leave the timing of that for God to know. I mean the storm of change and chaos is at hand and about to break in fury. Changes around the world have shattered the old paradigms, and new ones are being forged, we can either be ready to deal with the changes, make the changes for the positive happen, or be swept away by them.

Yea your right…Problem is the “new age progressive” knows that their game of social engineering is over when their :god of government” runs out of funds. And they see it coming ..Now we need leadership on our side to step up and tell these morons …Sorry your ideology has bankrupted us . So whine and scream all you want …There is no more …and vote No and hell No ..Starve it ..and at the same time be men and tell all the lobbyists and special interest to pack their bag and leave Washington ..There is nothing left to give them either..And in the future failure is what it is FAILURE… Get over it…
See all this because we as a nation could not do what was right from the outset…
