AP SOTU FACT CHECK: Obama and His Imbalanced Ledger

WASHINGTON (AP) — The ledger did not appear to be adding up Tuesday night when President Barack Obama urged more spending on one hand and a spending freeze on the other. Obama spoke ambitiously of putting money into roads, research, education, efficient cars, high-speed rail and other initiatives in his State of the Union speech.
He pointed to the transportation and construction projects of the last two years and proposed “we redouble these efforts.“ He coupled this with a call to ”freeze annual domestic spending for the next five years.”
But Obama offered far more examples of where he would spend than where he would cut, and some of the areas he identified for savings are not certain to yield much if anything.
For example, he said he wants to eliminate “billions in taxpayer dollars we currently give to oil companies.” Yet he made a similar proposal last year that went nowhere. He sought $36.5 billion in tax increases on oil and gas companies over the next decade, but Congress largely ignored the request, even though Democrats were then in charge of both houses of Congress.
A look at some of Obama’s statements Tuesday night and how they compare with the facts:
OBAMA: Tackling the deficit “means further reducing health care costs, including programs like Medicare and Medicaid, which are the single biggest contributor to our long-term deficit. Health insurance reform will slow these rising costs, which is part of why nonpartisan economists have said that repealing the health care law would add a quarter of a trillion dollars to our deficit.”
THE FACTS: The idea that Obama’s health care law saves money for the government is based on assumptions that are arguable, at best.
To be sure, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has estimated the law will slightly reduce red ink over 10 years. But the office’s analysis assumes that steep cuts in Medicare spending, as called for in the law, will actually take place. Others in the government have concluded it is unrealistic to expect such savings from Medicare.
In recent years, for example, Congress has repeatedly overridden a law that would save the treasury billions by cutting deeply into Medicare pay for doctors. Just last month, the government once again put off the scheduled cuts for another year, at a cost of $19 billion. That money is being taken out of the health care overhaul. Congress has shown itself sensitive to pressure from seniors and their doctors, and there’s little reason to think that will change.
___
OBAMA: Vowed to veto any bills sent to him that include “earmarks,” pet spending provisions pushed by individual lawmakers. “Both parties in Congress should know this: If a bill comes to my desk with earmarks inside, I will veto it.”
THE FACTS: House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has promised that no bill with earmarks will be sent to Obama in the first place. Republicans have taken the lead in battling earmarks while Obama signed plenty of earmark-laden spending bills when Democrats controlled both houses.
It’s a turnabout for the president; in early 2009, Obama sounded like an apologist for the practice: “Done right, earmarks have given legislators the opportunity to direct federal money to worthy projects that benefit people in their districts, and that‘s why I’ve opposed their outright elimination,” he said then.
___
OBAMA: “I’m willing to look at other ideas to bring down costs, including one that Republicans suggested last year: medical malpractice reform to rein in frivolous lawsuits.”
THE FACTS: Republicans may be forgiven if this offer makes them feel like Charlie Brown running up to kick the football, only to have it pulled away, again.
Obama has expressed openness before to this prominent Republican proposal, but it has not come to much. It was one of several GOP ideas that were dropped or diminished in the health care law after Obama endorsed them in a televised bipartisan meeting at the height of the debate.
Republicans want federal action to limit jury awards in medical malpractice cases; what Obama appears to be offering, by supporting state efforts, falls short of that. The president has said he agrees that fear of being sued leads to unnecessary tests and procedures that drive up health care costs. So far the administration has only wanted to study the issue.
Trial lawyers, major political donors to Democratic candidates, are strongly opposed to caps on jury awards. But the administration has been reluctant to support other approaches, such as the creation of specialized courts where expert judges, not juries, would decide malpractice cases.
___
OBAMA: As testament to the fruits of his administration’s diplomatic efforts to control the spread of nuclear weapons, he said the Iranian government “faces tougher and tighter sanctions than ever before.”
THE FACTS: That is true, and it reflects Obama’s promise one year ago that Iran would face “growing consequences” if it failed to heed international demands to constrain its nuclear program. But what Obama didn’t say was that U.S. diplomacy has failed to persuade Tehran to negotiate over U.N. demands that it take steps to prove it is not on the path toward a bomb. Preliminary talks with Iran earlier this month broke off after the Iranians demanded U.S. sanctions be lifted.

Be advised “working together” as he says means, “Republicans had better fall in line, abandon our principles and do as I say, or else.” He’s trying to run this country like a Mafia Don. The new 112th Republican controlled congress had better be ready to “go to the mattresses” on this one.If not, be advised, there’s another election in 2 years.

He represents the inferior part of every liberal’s personality, and this is why liberal/progressives fall for him.

After all the mention tonight I’ve got to say something very un-PC. I am very compassionate to the events weeks ago in Tucson AZ, but I’m way past grieving and feeling about it, this week alone 11 police have been shot, more than 7 of our military in that week alone have been shot or blown-up and even more since then.
So I feel for Gabby and all the others citizens who’ve lost their lives, but as citizens I don’t hold them in any hire regard then any other.

Posted on January 25, 2011 at 11:04pmFreezing spending at current levels means locking in the huge increases that were set in place over the last 2 years…what has to happen is a reduction to spending to levels before Pelosi took over in the Congress. Rolling back the spending levels to what they were in 2006 has to be done along with other massive cuts, elimination of enbture departments , agencies etc…what was proposed by Obamja in this speech will not change the course towards bankruptcy which will happen in less than 10 years if not another cent is spent (right now)….this is serious ….there was nothing in that speech that indicated how grave the situation actually is……this Admin does not realize (or does not care) just how dangerous a debt that is now 95% of GDP and growing is….

Posted on January 26, 2011 at 10:25amDifferent Suits, same designer–Nothings changed in Washington
Notwithstanding all the politicians remarks since, the message they sent during the State of the Union was clear: The people of America spoke with one voice in November and nobody really got the message. First, those who were newly elected allowed themselves to be bamboozled into dispersing by sitting with all their political opposites. This was done in the spirit of unity, but to those who watched the address, it seemed that the entire Congress was supporting the smooth talking of a president who wants to appear more conservative, but is even more tax and spend than he was before the elections. That said, the so-called spirit of cooperation is the mirror of delusion cast back at a well intended electorate.
It is business as unusual in Washington, DC. The man delivering the address was at the top of his game, relaxed, composed and powerful. And he relented not one iota of compromise toward his big, powerful government agenda. And those in Congress who were put there by an America crying out for common sense, applauded him and gave the impression that they were going to work in compromising their agenda for the sake of unity. This nation needs unity only if it is unified to bring the tenets of morals, ethics, and stewardship into a government that has lost its bearing on all. But considering the response, there is little hope outside of God’s hand of mercy.
Since, they have passed on. I grew up with men like Bob Harris, Warren McCarthy and Gene Flynn. Bob served in the Philippines in World War II. He didn’t speak of the atrocities he saw during the day, but he had terrors during the night. He made the best of his life. Warren and Gene were on the beaches at D-Day in Normandy. They were decorated war heros who fought to ensure we all are free today. They didn’t talk much about the experience of surviving German machine guns raining lead on them as they valiantly fought for our nation. Who could tell them that a president of the United States would stand before the country and joyously proclaim that homosexuals could now openly serve in the military?
Or what of the silence of the 50 million? They cannot say that they would like the same opportunity to live in America as do illegal aliens and the children of illegals. They cannot say that they, too, would like the challenge to grow up, get an education, and contribute to America by having a job or starting a business. They were not given the chance. They were murdered in their mother’s womb with the same policies that encourage such under this president. The Lord said in Ezekiel 22:30, “And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.” Let us pray for those who would stand as such. Let us be one such………………………………………

The first step is demoralization by confusing the facts to the point that one does not care to follow the truth. Second step is destabilization by actions counter to common sense. Third step is creating a crisis in which to apply certain policies and ideals. Fourth step is normalization, where people refuse to accept fact, logic or reason when it is presented to them–in other words, they accept the manifesto before them. Ideological subversion is designed to make people come to no sensible conclusions to defend themselves or their country.
Demoralization. The president said in his State of the Union address: “With their votes, they’ve determined that governing will now be a shared responsibility between parties… We will move forward together, or not at all…” In reality, the 2010 election was a total rejection of the socialist-trending policies of big government, not a mandate of sharing in these policies. Then he threatened moving forward with the president’s agenda–or not at all. He said the Soviet Union beat us, but that the space program resulted in this generation’s “Sputnik” moment. He said America had fallen behind China and India, and to sustain the American dream, we must “sacrifice, and struggle, and meet the demands of a new age.”
Destabilization. Throughout the message, the president talked of new expensive programs while at the same time saying the budget must be cut–these are opposite actions that belie common sense. Again, he said that Russia, Europe and China were moving ahead of our nation in infrastructure and that we must rebuild America in order to prosper. And he continued in class warfare by saying that the richest Americans should pay for bigger government. Crisis. He continued to use financial crisis to forward the concept of big government, more taxes (as couched with the word “invest”), more government intervention rather than relying on “the whims of the stock market.”
Normalization. He spoke proudly of welcoming homosexuals to the military, integrating illegal aliens into American society, and big government programs as forged by “principled compromise.” These are all smooth words, but they are promoting a rebellion against the laws of God. They are bringing the masses into a mental state where good is evil and evil is good. Isaiah 30 begins with “Woe to the rebellious children, says the LORD…” And verse 10 says, “Which say to the seers, see not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits.” We must repent from our trust in oppression and perverseness and hold these leaders and one another accountable lest we perish.
