Author Takes Parting Shots at Palin; Predicts She Will Run for President

(AP) — Sarah Palin can take down the fence.

Palin‘s neighbor of three months on Wasilla’s Lake Lucille, author Joe McGinniss, is packing his bags and notebooks and leaving Sunday for his home in Massachusetts to write the book he has been researching on the former governor and GOP vice presidential candidate.

His arrival in May made headlines and drew an indignant reaction from Palin and a visit from her husband, Todd. The Palins even tacked an extension onto an 8-foot board fence between the homes, leaving only a part of their second-story home visible from McGinniss’ driveway.

Peeping into windows or peering through knotholes was never part of his research, McGinniss said.

“I‘ve been very busy but on Lake Lucille it’s been very quiet,” he said. “As I told Todd back in May — he came over to get in my face about moving in there — I said, ‘You’re not even going to know I’m there. A lot of the time, I’m not going to be here. And when I am, I mind my own business. I don’t care what happens on your side of the fence. That‘s not why I’m here.’”

And that’s how it has played out, McGinniss said.

A Palin spokesman didn’t immediately respond to an e-mail Saturday seeking any comments from the governor on the author’s departure.

McGinniss has written best-selling books, including “The Selling of the President,” on the marketing of Richard Nixon, “Fatal Vision,” an account of the Jeffrey MacDonald murder case, and “Blind Faith,” about a businessman’s contract killing of his wife.

He’s no newcomer to Alaska. Thirty-five years ago, McGinniss moved to the state to see how new oil money would affect Alaskans. He wrote a draft, returned for three months in 1977, and two years later completed “Going To Extremes.” The book has recently been reissued.

McGinniss had been gone from Alaska for 28 years when he returned in 2008 to research a magazine article on Palin’s natural gas pipeline initiative, which she had heralded in the presidential campaign. McGinniss’ critical story in the now defunct Conde Nast publication Portfolio was titled “Pipe Dreams.” He concluded that for all of Palin’s posturing, her only accomplishment in two years of work on the pipeline project had been to award $500 million from Alaska’s budget to a Canadian company and to leave Alaska again at the mercy of Big Oil.

“She said it was a hit piece,” McGinniss said. “For a day she was upset. I said it was a hit piece: It hit the bulls-eye.”

So when McGinniss moved next door in May, Palin may have suspected that his future book was not going to be flattering.

Up went the fence, along with a Facebook posting implying something sinister: “Here he is about 15 feet away on the neighbor‘s rented deck overlooking my children’s play area and my kitchen window. We‘re sure to have a doozy to look forward to with this treasure he’s penning. Wonder what kind of material he‘ll gather while overlooking Piper’s bedroom, my little garden, and the family’s swimming hole?”

McGinniss said he didn’t seek out the rental home. During his search for a place to live, he said, the homeowner sought him out. The price was right and it was close to the people he wanted to talk to.

Anybody wanting to spy on the Palins, McGinniss said, would be better off in a boat.

“That’s the funny thing,” he said. “They live in a place where anybody who wants to look onto their property, all they have to do is get a boat and park 10 yards off shore and they can sit there all day and look at the Palin’s yard, if that’s what they want to do. But I don’t know who would want to do that.”

Throughout the summer, McGinniss said, he kept a chain across his driveway to keep tourists out.

“They want to take pictures of ‘The Fence’ or they want to try to come onto my land and climb up on a ladder and take a picture over the fence of Palin’s. I’d say, you can’t do that.”

Two days before his departure, he did not want to be photographed with the fence, lest he unnecessarily antagonize his neighbors after a peaceful summer.

McGinniss would not reveal what his book will say about the former governor. But he did get a taste of the support Palin has inspired.

“It’s just a peculiar thing, but she does, as I found out in May, she presses a button and what comes back is hate,” he said. “The people who respond when she complains about something are just so filled with hate. I got some of the ugliest, most vile e-mails directed at me, my grandchildren, my children, my wife — just ugly, ugly stuff.”

As for his interviews, most people he approached in Palin’s hometown were willing to speak, but he said there was what he calls an “undercurrent of fear.”

“People — I don‘t know if they’re afraid of shadows or whether there’s something real there — she’s no longer in a position of governmental influence but there are people up there who are scared to death to talk because if Sarah ever found out they talked, oh, something terrible would happen to them,” he said.

Once he settled in, McGinniss said, he didn’t have a single unpleasant encounter with anybody in Wasilla. Some people objected to the welcome he had received.

“They started bringing me blueberry pie. I had many offers of handguns to borrow. I turned them all down. But for about two weeks there, I couldn’t say hello to somebody without, they said, ‘I’ve got a couple of guns for you in my truck.’”

He found people willing to talk, as he had in 1975.

“It was the greatest place because there were no closed doors. There was nobody who said, ‘I don’t want to talk to you. And that’s pretty much the way it is today with the single exception of that least Alaskan of all Alaskans, Sarah Palin.’”

He is sure she will run for president.

“Everything she’s doing is geared to that,” he said. “And, she wants to be president. And God wants her to be president, so how can she say no?”

He’s glad Palin is around, because it enabled him to return to a place he loves after nearly three decades.

“The only way back was Sarah Palin,” McGinniss said. “That’s my interest in her. If she was the governor of Nebraska, I wouldn’t be writing about her, because I wanted a reason to come back to Alaska, and she was my key to the door.”

His implication that people are scared of Sarah is just another way of saying he’s got nothing on her, and no one would talk to him. What a jerk. He’s a bully and uses shady practices. Why would anyone take him seriously?

Living in a small community, I can guarantee you that no one spoke to an outsider about someone who lived inside the community regardless of whether they were loved or hated. If necessary, you only repeat what is common knowledge, not dirty laundry. In this case, I would be willing to bet that anonymous=nobody

IF I am to be honest… I hope she doesnt run in 2012. She still has the image that she acquired in the VP run. Maybe 2016 or 2020… but not this time around.
I feel that she could serve the public better as a speaker or maybe even the GOP Chair person… she would be great at fundraising and guiding the GOP back in the right (pun intended) direction.

I think that if Palin stumped for a Huckabee/Cornyn ticket that would be a winner. I know John Cornyn has always voted how his constituants told him to… well maybe not always but 97% of the time. I also know he listens to us (I am from TX) and believes in fiscal responsibility. Huckabee has the honor and respect needed for the job and could easily carry the heartland.

I feel Palin is too much of a lightening rod right now… but then again, there is a whole year until the 2012 campaign cycle starts… by the the Commander in Campaign will be out… but then again I dont think he ever stopped.

McGinniss has an agenda — to sell a book. As he has a potential profit to make, he has to say whatever he thinks will sell more books. That makes everything he says, suspect. I guess the house next to the Palin residence was the ONLY ONE available for rent in the entire town (or at least, that is what he tried to make it sound like). He got a lot of free press for moving in next door (again….agenda on his part). His book sounds like a waste of paper to me. If Joe McGinniss wanted to write an unauthorized biography, he could certainly do that without moving in next door to the Palins. In fact, it’s hard to figure what Joe McGinnisswould learn from that kind of physical proximity that has anything to do with politics or activism that couldn’t be learned through regular research and footwork.

Anyway, Joe McGinniss has written several Palin hit pieces over the past year and a half. He wrote a piece for the no longer existent Conde Nast’s Portfolio. This piece is full of quotes from noted Palin detractors. The false claims made in this piece regarding McGinniss’s assertions have been debunked. McGinniss also made an attempt to win an auction for dinner with Governor Palin, the proceeds going to Ride2Recovery effort for combat victims (Cathy Maples won the auction).
He lives in Massachusetts, by the way. Well, he did–until he moved into the Palins’ backyard.

It still does not quite seem real to most Alaskans that there are all these thousands of people in the Lower 48 turning out for … Sarah. It seems all the more unreal because Palin’s image as an engaging, down-to-earth small-town hockey mom was more or less accurate until two years ago. To be sure, some elements of that image were never true to life. “This whole hunter thing, for Sarah? That is the biggest fallacy,” says one longtime friend of the family. “That woman has never hunted. The picture of her with the caribou she says she shot? She got out of the R.V. to pose for a picture. She never helps with the fishing either. It’s all a joke.” The friend goes on to recall that when Greta Van Susteren came to the house to interview Palin “[Sarah] cooked moose chili and whatnot. Todd was calling everyone he knew the day before—‘Do you got any moose?’ Desperate.” In any event, her life is very different now: flying by private jet, driving a gleaming new Escalade ESV with tinted windows, and speaking to the whole world via a Fox News feed from her house until the network installs a TV studio on her property, where contractors are now also finishing a 6,000-square-foot stone-clad château that will contain an airplane hangar for Todd’s Piper Cub, two private apartments, and an office for Sarah.

Sarah Palin has been in executive level politics for almost 20 years.
      Some of Sarah’s accomplishments.

In Alaska, Sarah’s top priorities included fiscal restraint, limiting the size of government, resource development, education, equitable oil valuation as well as transportation and infrastructure development. Sarah Palin fought for ethics reform and transparency in government.

Sarah Palin has a long record of achievement and experience in public office.Prior her election as Governor, Palin served two terms on the Wasilla City Council and two terms as the mayor of Wasilla. During her tenure, she reduced property tax levels while increasing services and made Wasilla a business-friendly environment, drawing in new industry.

Under her leadership as Governor, Alaska invested $5 billion in state savings, overhauled education funding and protected Alaska’s natural resources. She created Alaska’s Petroleum Systems Integrity Office to provide oversight and maintenance of oil and gas equipment, facilities and infrastructure and the Climate Change Subcabinet to prepare a climate change strategy for Alaska.

During Governor Palin’s first year in office, three of her administrations major proposed pieces of legislation passed—an overhaul of the state’s ethics laws, a competitive process to construct a natural gas pipeline and a restructuring of Alaska’s oil valuation formula.

Palin is past chair of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, a multistate government agency that promotes the conservation and efficient recovery of domestic oil and natural gas resources while protecting health, safety and the environment. She also served as chair of the National Governors Association (NGA) Natural Resources Committee, which was charged with pursuing legislation to ensure state needs are considered as federal policy is formulated in the areas of agriculture, energy, environmental protection and natural resource management.

Sarah Palin’s successful efforts to stop the cronyism and reform the energy business in Alaska were so impressive Kay Cashman, the publisher and executive editor of Petroleum News, wrote the book entitled: “Sarah Takes On Big Oil” (http://tinyurl.com/ygkeo2f) . This is a must read for anyone who wants to understand the leadership Sarah Palin has exhibited in the area of reforming government and industry.
We should also remember that Sarah, while working as the state’s chief energy and environmental regulator, found massive corruption within her own Republican Party. Those included were the party chairman, and a former Attorney General. When she was through fines were paid, and some were trotted off to prison.

While Governor Palin has a history of being a reformer and taking on powerful interests for the benefit of ordinary people, Obama’s history is that of a tool of special interests, be they unions, trial lawyers, ACORN, or Wall Street.

So Beck says ‘Social Justice = Bad‘ and now it’s a bad label?

So was it bad when Reagan created ‘The Presidential Task Force on Project Economic Justice’, proposed by the ‘Center for Economic and Social Justice’ in 1985? Maybe Ronald Reagan was a communist too?

My wish is that Sarah Palin does go for president, and wins, for 8 years, and maybe Beck or Limbaugh will man up and actually hold responsibility in some government, so they can show us the ‘true way’. Talking is too easy.

I think 8 years of Bush presidency did not teach americans enough about the dangers of the crazy mainstream conservatives (because real conservatism is not even on the ballot) and they need maybe 8 or 16 more years before they wake up.

Pretty typical of today’s bipolar journalism…

“It was the greatest place because there were no closed doors. There was nobody who said, ‘I don’t want to talk to you. And that’s pretty much the way it is today with the single exception of that least Alaskan of all Alaskans, Sarah Palin.’”

    Then he says…

“People — I don’t know if they’re afraid of shadows or whether there’s something real there — she’s no longer in a position of governmental influence but there are people up there who are scared to death to talk because if Sarah ever found out they talked, oh, something terrible would happen to them,” he said.

Sarah trigger fear to the liberals…as it should be.

Agreed, if Scott reported this factually, this guy already has hate in his heart and Sarah knows it. Why give him the time of day. This guy is going to make a lot of money off Sarah. That is the capitalist way. I do not see Sarah running for President from anything that I have observed. She is out there making a lot of money for a lot of people, you know, helping the economy.

Palin does not always treat those ordinary people well, however—it depends on who is watching. Of the many famous people who have stayed at the Hyatt in Wichita (Cher, Reba McEntire, Neil Young), Sarah Palin ranks as the all-time worst tipper: $5 for seven bags. But the bellhops had it good in Kansas, compared with the bellman at another midwestern hotel who waited up until past midnight for Palin and her entourage to check in—and then got no tip at all for 10 bags. He was stiffed again at checkout time. The same went for the maids who cleaned Palin’s rooms in both places—no tip whatsoever.

      Danglingbags = internet troll. It’s a “*********” reference.
*** PLEASE DON’T FEED THE TROLLS***
For those uninitiated to the web world, a troll is someone that wants to stir up controversy and attention. You’ve wasted pages of posts making this attention whore feel good about himself. Notice how he’ll keep it going as long as possible. When one bomb-throwing comment is played out, he makes another to get us all riled again.
Ask yourself a few questions when someone’s post makes you eager to respond…
      - Why would a guy taking that stand even be here? (i.e. going on a Toyota Owners forum to say “I hate Toyota’s. Why would that person even find and join that group?)
      - Is there any value in trying to “set this guy straight”.
      - Has the discussion/argument wandered away from the original topic? If so is the troll poking and nudging at the majority at every opportunity? (In which case refer to first question)
      - Is the point of the forum/discussion area in question to win over people, or allow for communication of the folks he’s poking? Does this thread of conversation benefit the group or distract from the cause?

These are signs that the poster’s intentions are probably to gain attention, distract from the community where they post, and to keep their thread going.

Starve the troll and they’ll go away.

It is instructive to observe the unhinged left (redundant) and their desperate attempts to sell their ideology by knocking their competition – using school yard bully tactics. A good salesperson knows that the only way to sell is to highlight their own ‘product’ and related benefits (NOT freebies/handouts) of said product. Like the bipolar next door neighbor we’ve all encountered, the best way to deal with these people is with consistent kindness, at arm’s length. To engage a fool is in itself foolish – you risk being perceived a fool for doing so. If our fellow foolish Americans wish to continue their narcissistic navel-contemplation, let them. It comes down to choices, as in all things. The more people that unite as Americans FIRST, the better – so we can discontinue the politics of polarization that the MSM and the elites peddle daily. Remember in November.
