AP: Muslim Brotherhood Behind Syria‘s New ’Day of Rage’

BEIRUT (AP) — The banned Muslim Brotherhood urged Syrians to take to the streets on Friday as activists called for a “Day of Rage” against President Bashar Assad’s regime, which has stepped up its deadly crackdown on protesters by unleashing the army along with snipers and tanks.

The government warned against holding any demonstrations. Syrian state television said the Interior Ministry has not approved any “march, demonstration or sit-in” and that such rallies seek only to harm Syria’s security and stability.

Activists in Syria are planning nationwide protests following Muslim prayers in solidarity with more than 50 people killed in the last week alone in Daraa, a southern city at the heart of the revolt.

Since the uprising in Syria began in mid-March, inspired by revolts across the Arab world, more than 450 people have been killed nationwide, activists say.

Friday’s statement by the Muslim Brotherhood was the first time the outlawed group has openly encouraged the protests in Syria. The Brotherhood was crushed by Assad’s father, Hafez, after staging an uprising against his regime in 1982.

“You were born free so don’t let a tyrant enslave you,” said the statement, issued by the Brotherhood’s exiled leadership.

Assad has said the protests — the gravest challenge to his family’s 40-year ruling dynasty — are a foreign conspiracy carried out by extremist forces and armed thugs.

But he has acknowledged the need for reforms, offering overtures of change in recent weeks while brutally cracking down on demonstrations.

Last week, Syria’s Cabinet abolished the state of emergency and approved a new law allowing the right to stage peaceful protests with the permission of the Interior Ministry.

But the protesters, enraged by the mounting death toll, no longer appear satisfied with the changes and are increasingly seeking the regime’s downfall.

“We are preparing for a big demonstration today,” said an activist in the coastal city of Banias, which witnessed a large demonstration last Friday. “The people want the downfall of the regime.”

Syria has banned nearly all foreign media and restricted access to trouble spots since the uprising began, making it almost impossible to verify the dramatic events shaking one of the most authoritarian, anti-Western regimes in the Arab world.

Witnesses and human rights groups said Syrian army units clashed with each other on Wednesday over following Assad’s orders to crack down on protesters in Daraa, a besieged city where the uprising started.

While the troops’ infighting in Daraa does not indicate any decisive splits in the military, it is significant because Assad‘s army has always been the regime’s fiercest defender.

It is the latest sign that cracks — however small — are developing in Assad’s base of support that would have been unimaginable just weeks ago. Also, about 200 mostly low-level members of Syria‘s ruling Baath Party have resigned over Assad’s brutal crackdown.

    They speak of a day of rage in Syria. How are we going to respond when that Day of Rage is here in America on our soil by the same rat finks that are pushing in Syria. We are getting that Day of Rage, led by Farrakhan sometime in May. The date escapes me, Oh! and by the way The Black Panthers will be there, representatives of the ACLU, and of course the NAACP. Leading the parade along with Farrakhan will be the illustrious Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Isn’t that just too convenient. This day will make the riots in Wisconsin look like a cake walk. We need to stand up and be counted.

    Doesn’t surprise me in the least. It’s also (in my own mind) no coincidence that all these uprisings around the Middle East are happening one after the other. Makes you wonder who sent who where and who has friends in high places? Hummm..

    Well, gosh, darn, swoon, I’ve got the vapors! The Muslim Brotherhood is behind more violence, why I’m sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo shocked.

    How many thousands of years have folks over there been killing each other and warring now? 1,000s of years ? Wow, what could they have done with thousands of years besides war and rushing to bury the dead? They could have developed respect for women. Eliminated beheading and stoning and honor killings. Developed their land, discovered hygiene for everyone, created schools not bent on violence and brainwashing and well, they could have discovered the cure for so many diseases, created beautiful art – in essence contributed to civilization instead of going out of their way to destroy it. Yep, let’s continue to fight over that lump of sand to prove …….what? domination/greed/power……and to use religion as an excuse instead of owning up to the truth? .

    Folks, especially Show, we won’t have too! It will all be taken care of. We need to start cleaning up our side of the street and others will follow.

      The Muslum Brotherhoods call for a “Day of Rage” is able to be traced to their earliest days when they were an opposition group in the 1920s against the British in Egypt; the founder of them sought to re-establish the Caliphate, and with the Syrian ruling family, it also is a matter of revenge and of blood. This is their time, the window remains open for a short while and momentum favors them for now, if they win Syria, then watch for Jordan to go down next and after that Israel will be struck.

      The “Day of Rage” also is one of their trademarks, in which they use anger, hate, and predujices to stir up the crowds and drive them to do what they seek; in this case to take on the Syrian govt. In the end, it will come down to who Syria will be a puppet for – Iran or the Brotherhood.
