BEIT OMAR, West Bank (AP) — An Associated Press photographer suffered a broken rib on Saturday while being detained by Israeli security forces during a protest in the West Bank.
The photographer, Nasser Shiyoukhi, was injured in Beit Omar, a Palestinian village where residents, joined by foreign activists, hold a weekly protest against a nearby Jewish settlement.
During Saturday’s protest, Israeli security forces physically scuffled with activists who pushed them and yelled at them. The forces frequently fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Shiyoukhi said he was grabbed by Israeli paramilitary border police as he tried to walk away from the confrontation. Footage from the scene showed him being pushed against a wall and having his helmet pulled off his head. Shiyoukhi is seen arguing and struggling with two security men as they lead him away.
Shiyoukhi, a Palestinian from Hebron who covers the weekly protests, said an Israeli soldier had threatened him on Friday, warning him he would be hurt if he came to Beit Omar. He said he was kicked and verbally abused while in custody before he was released without charge.
In a statement, the Israeli military said Shiyoukhi had “physically confronted security forces, abusing the freedom of action photographers are given in the area.”
“He refused to adhere to calls to step back and allow the security forces to operate freely, and was consequently detained temporarily and released shortly afterwards,” it added, saying Israeli police would investigate.
A spokesman for the border police had no immediate comment.

Report Post »Western civilization has shown it can separate “bronze age myths” in their everyday lives, and laws. I don‘t think that’s possible for the huge part of the muslim world.

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 3:20pmi’m not trolling, venom. i just find the whole conflict over these “sacred” lands to be based in ignorance. it’s sickening how many have died (and are dying and will continue to die) over bronze-age myths and crumbling old buildings and relics in a dry, dusty desert. we need to stop being so damned respectful of metaphysical nonsence when it seeks to murder and enslave people. it’s time to call a time-out and remind these folks that there really is no god so their bloody and savage attempts to protect, defend and kill for their beliefs is quite futile and dumb in the whole scheme of things.—-but, hey, that’s just the way i see it.

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 6:34pmGood point. This injury was likely staged to make the Isrealis look like the bad guys. (Since nothing else was really going on)

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 6:18amWhat happened to the footage right before this guy was arrested. Looks like he broke his ribs on those rocks when being handcuffed. It looks like communinty agitating made its way around the world. The Palistinians are being used as pawns. This was never about land. If it was they can dip into other borders, why just Israels?? We know why.

Posted on September 27, 2010 at 7:25amI clearly saw the wall they had to cross. The protesters clearly crossed that wall and were being forced back across. The photographer protested and the soldiers arrested him. Simple story.

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 4:24amThis raw footage is highly edited. Where is the raw footage that hasn’t been spliced and clipped? This video seems like it was purposely edited to shine a sympathetic light on the so called peaceful protesters.

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 2:08amAP allows or encourages “activist journalism”. They set themselves up to be “victimized” by the evil IDF oppressors then whine to the cameras when they get hurt. Question the validity of anything that comes from AP!
