Key Update: Obama: Churches Won’t Be Forced to Directly Provide Contraceptives But…
WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — The Blaze has covered the religious freedom issues surrounding the Obama administration’s contraceptive mandate extensively. President Barack Obama will announce a plan to accommodate religious employers outraged by a rule that would require them to cover birth control for women free of charge, according to a person familiar with the decision.
Obama was expected to make the announcement at the White House Friday. ABC has more regarding what sources are saying the president is poised to present:
The move, based on state models, will almost certainly not satisfy bishops and other religious leaders since it will preserve the goal of women employees having their birth control fully covered by health insurance. [...]
One source familiar with the decision described the accommodation as “Hawaii-plus,” insisting that it’s better than the Hawaii plan — for both sides.
In Hawaii the employer is responsible for referring employees to places where they can obtain the contraception; Catholic leaders call that material cooperation with evil. But what the White House will likely announce later today is that the relationship between the religious employer and the insurance company will not need to have any component involving contraception.
CBS News corroborates:
The exact nature of the clarification remains unclear, but any accommodation could largely follow what exists in a majority of states, like in Illinois where DePaul University, the largest Catholic university in the country, offers an employee health plan that does cover contraception. Georgetown University offers a similar plan.
The shift is aimed at containing the political firestorm that erupted after Obama announced in January that religious-affiliated employers had to cover birth control as preventative care for women. Churches and houses of worship were exempt, but all other affiliated organizations were ordered to comply by Aug. 2013.
Republican leaders and religious groups, especially Roman Catholics, responded with intense outrage, saying the requirement would force them to violate church teachings and long-held beliefs against contraception.
The issue also pushed social issues to the forefront in an election year that had been dominated by the economy. Abortion, contraception and any of the requirements of Obama‘s health care overhaul law have the potential to galvanize the Republicans’ conservative base, critical to voter turnout in the presidential and congressional races.
Republicans vowed to reverse the president’s policy, with House Speaker John Boehner accusing the administration of violating First Amendment rights and undermining some of the country’s most vital institutions, such as Catholic charities, schools and hospitals.
The measure also sparked an internal debate at the White House. Vice President Joe Biden, then-chief of staff Bill Daley and deputy national security adviser Denis McDonough, all Catholics, raised concerns about how the administration proceeded on the policy. On the other side, senior White House advisers Nancy-Ann DeParle, Pete Rouse and David Plouffe argued for the need to ensure coverage for all without exception, as a matter of women’s health and fairness.
The person with knowledge of Obama’s decision requested anonymity in order to speak in advance of the official announcement.

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 9:45amLel, I am also leery of exceptions – for one, exceptions made can be unmade – if we get another congress like we had in the first two years of Obama’s administration, what is to say that the exceptions will not be eliminated using the same rhetoric being used today for gay marriage – equality. It is wrong for the federal government to mandate companies or individuals to buy a product just as it is wrong for the federal government to mandate companies or individuals give a product for free. It is a distraction, in a way, to focus only on the Catholic church – this should not be mandated for anyone.

If he magically creates waivers, you will have to come begging to him. And, smaller, less influential religions and Churches will NOT get waivers because they do not pose a political threat.
If he FORCES insurers to “give away” baby murder policies, then we will STILL be paying to murder babies, it just won’t be on our monthly bill. Insurers would still pass along the costs in the form of higher premiums on health policies. Companies do not absorb imposed costs. They do not sacrifice profitability.

He has also just given himself the authority to decide between the two so-called differences. I am thinking he is laying ground for the passing of some sort of Sharia law to be established in America. And he will be the one to decide. The Democrats are willing to take the life of an innocent child in order for a woman to have their “rights”. What about the rights of the unborn child? Who speaks for them? Who protects them? God will not take kindly to anyone who would vote for those who advocate the murder of children, and those who vote Democrat are going against God’s Word and will pay dearly for it. Is Obama giving the Insurance company permission to “print” the money to pay for the birth control? NO. Then where does the money come from to pay for these “free” services? It comes from the inflated insurance premiums of the Religious Employer. The “Free Services” are not free, somebody has to pay for them, and we all know the Insurance provider will need to charge for the Free Services in the Employer’s premiums, but say they are “Donating” them. Under the original ruling all employers except churches and charitieswould have this coverage in their policies. then this week they removed the exemption and said ALL enmployers must do it. Since the coverage has no co pay, and no dedectible, it means everyone’s insurance premium goes up, i.e. you pay for the service provided whether you agree with it morally or not. HHS and the President don’t have the authority to make you pay for it. So his latest change is not backing down, now he’s just saying oh well then only the insurance company has to provide and pay for it. This is not a real change in anything. So instead of your premium going up due to explicit additional coverage, it will now go up to cover the insurance companies payments anyway. The insurer doesn’t have some magic bag of money from which to pay the claim. So nothing has changed, and in either case someone else pays for this “Free” service. They President cannot just mandate that private companies or citizens do this either way.

This would cost the individual more, but the employers would not be involved at all. I realize this would require another legal change. But I fear an “event” will happen which will somehow land us with Obama for 4 more years. I’ve said this for two years now. Progs/libs/Dems aren’t about to let go of the power and control they have. I‘m not entirely sure how it will happen but I don’t think anything will change in November. I hope I’m wrong.
Even if Obama is somehow unseated, I have great concern for what the czars and minions are doing behind the scenes. They know exactly what they are writing to tie up any real change in the courts for years to come. Progs intend to destroy the country and won’t stop until they do.
