‘Christmas Miracle’: Deal Reached on 9/11 Responders Health Bill

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — Republican and Democratic senators have reached a deal on a scaled-down bill to help 9/11 first responders who became sick from having worked in the dust of the World Trade Center, a move one senator called a “Christmas miracle.”

The Hill says the deal was struck between one the bill’s major sponsors, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and one of its major detractors, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK).

On Wednesday, Coburn touted the compromise. “I’m pleased the sponsors of this bill agreed to lower costs dramatically, offset the bill, sunset key provisions and take steps to prevent fraud,” he said in a statement.

“Every American recognizes the heroism of the 9/11 first responders, but it is not compassionate to help one group while robbing future generations of opportunity,” he added. “I’m pleased this agreement strikes a fair balance and improves the bill the majority attempted to rush through at the last minute.”

“The Christmas Miracle we’ve been looking for has arrived,” Schumer said in a statement. “Over the last 24 hours, our Republican colleagues have negotiated in good faith to forge a workable final package that will protect the health of the men and women who selflessly answered our nation’s call in her hour of greatest need.”

“We thank our Republican friends for coming together to fulfill America’s moral obligation to the heroes of 9/11,” he added.

Congressional aides close to the negotiations tell The Associated Press that the deal calls for providing up to $4 billion in health care and economic aid over five years to first responders and survivors of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorism attacks.

The measure is about $2 billion less than the bill proposed earlier this week by Democratic Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York.

Both the Senate and the House were expected to vote on the measure later Wednesday. The Senate is expected to adjourn shortly thereafter.

UPDATE:

The bill has officially passed.

The only “Christmas miracle” I see is that the House and Senate are leaving town, hopefully not to return until after January 5th. They didn’t hear us on Nov 2….I don’t know how much money they have spent in this lame duck session, but hopefully the new guys and ladies will change things for the better. I think Congress should recess every other year (mid-term and pres. election years) by Nov 1, because when the PEOPLE (us) vote for a change in direction, it should take effect immediately, not two months later after those who were voted out have inflicted a bunch more vindictive damage on the American people. But, what do I know? Pray for sanity to regain a foothold in January!

    Oh that’s good news!

I find it ironic that those who are complaining about the money being spent were completely silent on the costs of Iraq/afghanistan and I’m not talking about our military operations.. I‘m talking about the contractors we’ve been paying instead. Did you know we pay security contractors nearly 5x the amount of our troops to do the same work? Where are the conservative stories on that? I’ve only seen those stories coming from “the other side”.

In your fantasy world, two wrongs do make a right?? Clearly there isn’t a care in your world about oversight from any angle or “side”. We will just spend and spend some more, while you just bicker about which side picked up the fight…

What will it take to get politicians to reprsent the voice of the people? They are coming on like a steam-roller. All I can say is that 2012 will most likely be the birth of a party that can be trusted to represent “We the People”. The dem‘s and the Repubs just don’t seem to get it. That is if we are still a country that allows it’s citizens to vote. Bring back the morals, pride, honor, respect, patriotism , and Faith in God that this country was founded on.

But Schumer made sure that the bill allowed up to 10% of the money intended for first responders, be allowed to go to lawyers. It just so happens, Chuck is a Harvard Law School grad. Where is all of the screaming from the lefties about lawyers stealing money from the first responders?

It seems to me that the politicians are dragging their feet because the longer they wait, the more will be dead and the cost goes down. The Dems will control all aspects of life. I can see it now. A call comes out of another attack on America and the responders will have a debate on how much they will cover a firemans medical costs prior to actually risking their lives to save someone. This will take several weeks if were lucky. Then every participant will sign a binding agreement prior to actual response.

What’s another 4 billion on the 300 to 500 billion we already forked over to NY over this attack. If you give 5 million bucks to 3000 families of the dead, (15 billion) and 20 billion to rebuild the buildings, (35 billion) and 4 billion to the union workers who received overtime to clear the mess, and have pensions and healthcare to die for, that only leaves 261 Billion dollars unaccounted for. MINIMUM. Pigford for gubmint workers.

Now I believe no money amount can replace human life, but how does this money spent? Does each person get a certain amount or is this money OR is this going to pay for a 6 lane road to a hospital that will never be used in the middle of a forest in NY?

This $$ BETTER go to the people affected not silly projects while these people still do not get the right treatment…

I too would like to know what these responders had for benefits already. Is this an overlap or is this just to fill in where their insurance didn’t cover? Is this for their family, for bills they can’t pay? What is it for? It says up to $4 billion, meaning that after five years if the $4 billion hasn’t been spent the program ends under budget and there are no so-called leftover funds to be used somewhere else? We all want what is right for these people who faced the unthinkable, searched through rubble daily. But, I hope journalists will lay out for us exactly why this is needed, who this is for, what it is for and how it is being paid for.

They risked their lives for others no matter who they were or what kind of insurance they had or whether or not they were in a union. I don’t like the corruption in unions either. A lot of people are in unions because they would not have a job. THAT IS THE ABUSE OF UNIONS THAT SHOULD STOP. THAT AND THE THIEVING THE UNION LEADERS COMMIT. part of the food bill reads
The bill would give the FDA, which is responsible for overseeing about 80% of the nation’s food supply, the authority to require domestic food producers to draw up detailed plans to ensure the safety of their products.

Domestic companies also would have to make their records available more quickly to the FDA, and the agency would be directed to inspect production facilities more frequently — a process now so inadequate that many plants are not checked for years at a time.

When they started getting sick and some developed cancer, they tried to get some help from the government for their medical bills. But as usual, it has been playing politics. These people layed their life on the line and with all of the money this government manages to waste and steal, it is a travesty that it took this long. None of the excuses they have come up with are truly valid. I know what it means to put your life on the line for another. I was an EMT for 7 years before I became a Registered Nurse. On 9/11/2010 artist Marc Rubin and I were by request in NYC with his 7ft x 14ft painting “Atrocity 911”, mounted on wheels and collapsible construction frame, to serve as a standing memorial outside the Ground Zero Memorial Service. Video Montage: http://www.marcrubin.com/911-2010.ivnu .Many survivors and First Responders thanked us for bringing the painting.

Thousands saw and photographed the painting. Tears and healing all around. “Atrocity 911” united people of all colors and ethnicities. THATS what Great Art does! Thats why is scares the hell out of the Progressives. That is why they have an agenda for crap Dada art. http://www.marcrubin.com/dadaw.ivnu

The NYPD protected us. Mayor Bloomberg sent his minion over to get inflammatory quotes. The media interviewed the artist for 3 solid hours, yet you saw nothing on TV or print.

Why are the American people paying for this? The twin towers were insured, file suit against the cooperate owners and their insurance company!

I hope they have a clause in there that LAWYER do NOT get a penny.. not one red/white/blue CENT.. they could have been taken care of thorough the VA if it‘s good enough for our military it’s good enough for them too.. and than we would KNOW the money is being spent on the 1st responders healthcare..

INDEPENDENTVOTERIL I agree with you but you know not what you say. For the first time on this website I‘ll use the word socialized medicine according to it’s correct meaning: the VA is 100% socialized medicine. The United States government owns the hospital and pays the doctors. That’s socialized medicine. I don’t favor that system for America, but I veterans deserve no less.

I had no idea you were a socialist, but I’m with you on this one.

I wonder if they will drag it out and challenge every claim like they are doing Oak Ridge, Tn nuke workers that were irridated even as the Gov’t old them it was safe. They have already lost over 50% of possible claimants to rare and multiple cancers. Delay long enough and the problem resolves itself. Of course all the Gov’t administration of this program if fully manned and funded.

Are you people all high???? These men and women were no doubt great and strong and brave, but they CHOSE this line of work. Would I or could i do it? Hell no! I am grateful to them, but why do we “owe” them anything beyond what should be excellent medical coverage from their insurance provider?
Answer is the “nanny” state using another emotional issue to spend billions of tax dollars.
And all you holier than thou “founding father” principled are just progressives in conservative clothing.
      T H I N K.
Why can we not ask the best medical professionals in the areas needed by these people to either 1-donate THEIR time and medications OR
2-submit the billing records directly to the Fed when the prescribed treatments are finished.
But all you progressives (read: claiming to be conservative) are on board for THIS spending cause it touches you emotionally and is near and dear to your heart.
      Baaaa baaaa baaaa.

That’s right because 9/11 didn’t really happen and all of those people are just faking it.

Where do you people come from?
