‘99.9 Percent Confidence’: Officials Say DNA Testing Proves bin Laden is Dead

WASHINGTON (AP) — After the firefight that killed Osama bin Laden, the U.S. used “multiple methods” to positively identify his remains, according to a senior Pentagon official who personally saw a photograph of the corpse.

The official, who discussed the matter on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly, declined to specify the methods of identification, but two Obama administration officials said DNA evidence confirmed the death.

The officials claimed the DNA evidence provides a match with 99.9 percent confidence.

The officials did not immediately say where or how the testing was done but the test explains why President Barack Obama was confident to announce the death to the world Sunday night. Obama provided no details on the identification process.

The U.S. is believed to have collected DNA samples from bin Laden family members in the years since the 9/11 attacks that triggered the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan. It was unclear whether the U.S. also had fingerprints or some other means to identify the body on site.

Bin Laden was shot in the head during the firefight with members of an elite American counter-terrorism unit that launched a helicopter-borne raid on the al-Qaida leader’s compound in Pakistan early Monday, U.S. officials said. Officials said the U.S. special forces who stormed the compound came face to face with their prey.

U.S. officials also said bin Laden was identified through “facial recognition,” a reference to technology for mapping unique facial characteristics, but it was not clear exactly how the Navy SEAL troops performed the comparison.

The body was later taken to an American warship, but the senior Pentagon official declined to say which one and where the ship was situated.

The body was photographed before being buried at sea, although no images have been released by the Obama administration.

The U.S. official who disclosed the burial at sea said it would have been difficult to find a country willing to accept the remains. Obama said the remains had been handled in accordance with Islamic custom, which requires speedy burial.

Positive identification of the remains is considered a critically important part of the U.S. operation, given the symbolic importance of bin Laden’s leadership of the Islamic extremist movement that was based in Afghanistan until the U.S. invaded in October 2001.

When al-Qaida’s leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, was killed in a U.S. airstrike in June 2006, DNA tests were performed by the FBI to positively identify the remains. The U.S. military also performed an autopsy, in part to dispel allegations in the immediate aftermath of the airstrike that the terrorist leader had been beaten or shot by U.S. soldiers while in American custody.

It was not clear Monday whether the Obama administration intended to release its photos of bin Laden’s body.

In July 2003, when U.S. forces killed Saddam Hussein’s sons, Odai and Qusai, in a gunbattle in northern Iraq, the U.S. military released graphic after-death photographs in an effort to prove to Iraqis that they were dead. Two of the photos showed the first man, identified as Qusai, with bruises and blood spots around his eyes. That face was far more intact than the other, identified as Odai; the mouth was open with the teeth showing.

    It was just reported on The View, that Obama made the plan to kill Osama. The plan to send the Navy Seals was put into plan by George W. Bush, many years ago! Give me a break. Obama only took over what President Bush planned. He doesn’t deserve a pat on the back for something no one believes. Show us Osama’s body. It’s should never have been washed out to sea (if this actually occured). I’m tired of hearing the lies.

    Wow – 99.9% confirmation using “familial DNA” – and in a week, no less! And no body to compare it to, now. Usually takes at least two weeks for this kind of testing, but I’m sure they put a rush on it. Would this stand up in a court of law? You be the judge.

    I may be confused but I thought it took 5 to 10 dyas to generate a complete DNA profile. I am getting this same time line from a person that works with a paternity testing company.

    How was a DNA test performed and confirmed in a matter of hours?

    And why bury the body at sea? Was an autopsy performed before the burial?

    I know the method of death was gunshot wound BUT wouldn’t we like to confirm that the deceased had diabetes and the other ailments that Osama was said to have?

      Do you really care if he had diabetes or anything else? Who really cares? He is dead. They took pics, got his DNA. What else did they need the body for? Get rid of it, make sure there is no where for his “followers” to “worship”.

    All Mr. Obama can take credit for is changing the Rules of Engagement back to what they were and announcing he’d decided to get out of the Spec Ops/SEAL teams way.       i agree with you. it is a scam. DNA testing need to be compared to the authentic Bin laden DNA. where are they going to find authentic Bin Laden DNA? Family DNA comparison is far less then 99.9% accurate. And DNA testing takes at least several days. i smell a rat here.

      Me too. I used to basically take everything at face value. I was one of those people who rolled my eyes at those who society labeled as conspiracy theorists; or at best I thought they were just creative and looking for a buck.

      After opening my eyes, and listening to Beck and others, and trying to piece all the inconsistencies together, I’ve definitely had a change of heart. What greater conspiracy could there be then to convince everyone that there are none? I‘m not saying they’re all true, but I have a profound distrust in those who try to dissuade me from figuring out the facts and the truth.

      Seems like when I was doing this in college that it took a while to get this testing completed. Any experts out there that know exactly how fast DNA testing can be completed? It just seems pretty quick for those type of results to be available.

      Dr. Michael Baden, a noted forensic pathologist said that it takes 24 hours for the absolute fastest DNA ID. Bin Laden’s DNA ID was done in 5 hours and Dr. Baden had no idea how this was done. Since Obama is noted for his honesty and dedication to the military, maybe Hillary or one his other honest military minded people could tell us a different story of how this was done.

      I was reading that DNA testing has gotten much faster ( 12 hours or less). as I found it peculiar that they had the DNA testing completed and then threw the body over board. Maybe I am just being paranoid. I couldn’t help but notice all those people out celebrating, weren’t the same types I seen protesting, like in Wisconsin.

      What ever the case, This may even back fire in some ways on the Obama administration politically. These kids are going to have to grapple with the notion they are indoctrinated to see America as this evil Imperialistic pig, yet, embrace the assassination of a terrorist. How they can voice support for that idiot of Wiki-leaks, then, support the termination of OBL. Hopefully, this does just that. Hopefully some of these kids are challenged on their support by their peers, and then find themselves having to DEFEND America for the first time.
      Our military boys and girls deserve to be patted on the back for this, I am very proud of them, as I have always been. The Navy Seals are the best of the best. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed that none of our men and women are targeted in revenge. Stay vigilant America and May the Lord bless and protect our military brothers and sisters…

      It is interesting, indeed. Does anyone else find it strange that photos have not been released (hole in the face or not)? This whole situation still isn’t sitting well with me. Gruesome photos of Saddam’s sons were released when public outcry warranted such. Why not now when suspicion will be even higher. Instead, you toss the corpse into the depths of the sea less than 24 hours after the bullets are fired. There are claims that bin Laden was killed in 2007 (Bhutto)….this is all very suspicious, especially with the rushed “DNA proof” by “experts”.

      Oh thank goodness now we can all go back to sleep. Obama says they killed Bin Laden. Despite the fact we had pictures AND video of Sadam dead, we don’t have even pics of Osama yet. Then he says “well we have the DNA”…OK so we’ll just take him at his word on both accounts. Not like he’s ever lied before right? I mean he wouldn’t do that right?

      How’s that facial recognition work with half his face blown off by two hits?
      Everything these people say is suspect.

      At the rate they are giving us details that don’t make sense, OBL will have a reality show on MTV by next week.
