AP: ‘Sparse’ Crowd of ‘Thousands’ Gathers in DC to Push Dem Agenda

WASHINGTON (AP) – Thousands of people flocked to the Lincoln Memorial for a rally Saturday organized by labor and civil rights groups, hoping to show support for the Democratic agenda in the face of expected GOP election gains next month.
More than 400 organizations, including faith, environmental and gay rights groups, sponsored the “One Nation Working Together” demonstration on the same end of the National Mall where a month ago tea party activists met to hear conservative commentator Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin.
“We’re here to show the rest of the country that there are people who support the progressive agenda,” said Ken Bork, who came from Camas, Wash. But he acknowledged that Republicans are enjoying an advantage heading toward the Nov. 2 election that will determine whether Democrats retain control of Congress.
“There may be an enthusiasm gap, but we’re not going to know until we have an election,” Bork said. “A lot of the noise from the extreme right-wing stuff, it’s been well orchestrated by big money. But it‘s not as bad as they’re making it out.”
There were people with union T-shirts and others participants who carried banners advocating expanding Medicare for all Americans. While the Beck rally stretched well down the National Mall, Saturday’s event was shaping up to be far smaller, with sparse groups lingering around the reflecting pool and other monuments.
Some people described the event as a counter-protest to the Beck rally. Many mentioned the perceived racism
they see among the tea party-style activists, even though no one who spoke at the Beck rally neared anything approaching criticism of President Barack Obama or his race.
“He can’t get anything done. It’s just wrong,” said Shelley Casala, who came from Fort Wayne, Ind.
She said Democrats need to look at the rally, take heart and govern from a liberal platform. “Democrats are too afraid of losing their job,” she said. “We will have their back if they have ours.”
With a month of campaigning to go and voter unhappiness high, the Democratic-leaning groups sponsoring the One Nation rally hoped the four-hour program of speeches and entertainment would unify activists who are crucial if Democrats are to keep power on Capitol Hill.
Republicans are hoping to ride voter anger to victories in the November congressional elections and regain control of the House and possibly the Senate.
Organizers insisted the rally wasn’t partisan and said the message was about job creation, quality education and justice. However, the largest of the organizers, such as the AFL-CIO and the Service Employees International Union, tend to back Democratic candidates.
A month ago, Beck and former Alaska Gov. Palin gathered near the Lincoln Memorial on the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech to urge a vast crowd to embrace what they consider traditional values. Though also billed as nonpolitical, the rally was widely viewed as a protest against the policies of President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats.
One Nation organizers said that they began planning their event before learning about Beck’s rally and that their march is not in reaction to it.
Obama was spending the weekend at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland.

Posted on October 2, 2010 at 1:53pmNot quite the same emotional turnout….However – Why is FOX news scared to say that the CPUSA is one of the big supporteers of this rally?? Just saying, AFL-CIO, Progressives and leaving it at that, gives a huge pass to those in America that could care less about the unions, or have no idea what a Progressive is , but f you tie the truth to this rally and tie Progressives to Communist and National Socialists, then you send the accurate picture for voters to choose from this Nov. We are at a turning point in this nation, and don’t take a low turn out today as a possible low turn out of voters or even vote tampering this Nov. We need to make the Progressive idea/ideals a thing of the past , never to return-like feudalism is today.

Posted on October 2, 2010 at 4:43pmNo doubt, Yankee. I don’t know why every conservtive news outlet in America didn;t continue to point out that this was sponsored by communist and socialist organizations. I would have been putting it out there every day for a week before and a week after this event. Fox should have led the way with stories on the sponsors – highlight a new marxist organization every day, primetime. Even some who religiously watch Fox have no idea what kind of people are involved in today’s rally.

Posted on October 2, 2010 at 5:44pmI agree, Yankee. To me, that was the most important point. Shouldn’t that be news, especially since the President and his government websites endorsed this rally? When was the last time a President endorsed communist rallies? Oh, and how about that Van Jones! And the respect the crowd paid to the speakers – it sounded like they were having a party in the background. The speakers had to yell to be heard.

Posted on October 2, 2010 at 1:54pmFrom the beginning, I imagined people walking around asking people to spread out. It’s the kind of thing they would do… it‘s why I’ve been begging people to go down there and shoot lots of video.
The MSM is going to do some heavy editing and low camera angles. They won’t dare center on the crazies in the crowd, or show any of their signs. We won’t hear what anyone is saying either. I really hope we have people in there documenting this. This is a golden opportunity… not to smear or manipulate or be selective, but to get a real representation of the crowd. The MSM didn’t do that with 8/28, and they won’t do it here either. They’ll go from one extreme to the other, but never actually document reality.
Do you think TIME include this in the Year In Pictures? I do… it may also force them to include 8/28 as well. If they don’t, they will be 100% exposed as propagandists.

Van Jones – We can agree on getting some jobs through a responsible green movement. But we don’t need THE GOVERNMENT TO DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Or to scare us with Global Warming to JAM it down our freaking throats.
A question was presented. Why are there 40 million people without jobs? An answer that accounts for a lot of that is people have become too lazy to get a job! Stop being entitled and take a minimum wage job instead of leeching off the government! If the area you live in is dangerous and you are struggling to find work there, then move somewhere else! Start over! Start fresh! WORK for it! Don’t expect it to be handed to you.

400 organizations coordinated a One Nation rally. Union workers were told they had to go. The President himself endorsed the rally. The AP says a ‘sparse’ crowd of people showed up. Those in attendance seemed to be unenthusiastic or bored.
To paraphrase the opposition, you really don’t have to be a weatherman to sea which way the wind blows.
Keep up the good work Fellow Patriots and America’s brightest days may still be in the future rather than in the past.

Posted on October 3, 2010 at 6:53amAttention AP: Two of the themes were jobs and justice. This is pretty pathetic, that in a rally for the middle class, there basically was no representation of the true working middle class. It was a farce.Jobs? Just what jobs are you talking about? Oh you mean UNION jobs where no one can be fired no matter how inept and incompetent they are right? You mean UNION jobs with 65.00 an hour salary that bankrupted the auto industry right? You mean non-productive government jobs where it takes 7 people to do the work of one right? They no more stood for jobs at this rally than Obama stands for the constitutional law in America.
Report Post »Justice>? Just what kind of justice do they mean? A big cry there was that too many people of a certain color are in prison. You know murderers and rapists.Yes they want to release these murderers and rapists so they can do it again based on the color of their skin. Social justice? How is it that the working people, supporting a bunch of lazy freeloaders is any kind of justice?
A person has to be really ignorant and uneducated to believe this rally was about jobs and justice.I have a more correct name for this rally. The Socialistic, one welfare, race-based rally for the non-productive shills and Union bosses in bed with Obama rally. Pathetic.

Posted on October 3, 2010 at 3:45pmIt’s time ordinary citizens looked into the 60-100 families that own the rights/shares of the Federal Reserve, Inc. It is a private corporation that runs in complete secrecy. If you were a billionaire owning half of the global GDP, what would you do with your money?

I’m betting hundreds of thousands LESS than Glenns Rally. Americans are watching and learning the REAL TRUTH from Glenn and it showed by the poor attendance from the Socialist Communists. There should have been millions there if you read into THEIR propaganda. Thank God we have Human Beings on this Planet like Glenn Beck
