AP: World Stumbles Toward Next Big Climate Summit

BANGKOK (AP) — Nineteen years after the world started to take climate change seriously, delegates from around the globe spent five days talking about what they will talk about at a year-end conference in South Africa. They agreed to talk about their opposing viewpoints.
Delegates from 173 nations did agree that delays in averting global warming merely fast-forward the risk of plunging the world into “catastrophe.” The delegate from Bolivia noted that the international effort, which began with a 1992 U.N. convention, has so far amounted to “throwing water on a forest fire.”
But the U.N. meeting in Bangkok, which concluded late Friday after delegates cobbled together a broad agenda for the December summit, failed to narrow the deep divisions between the developing world and the camp of industrialized nations led by the United States. These may come to plague the summit in Durban.
Generally, developing nations, pointing to the industrialized world as the main culprit behind global warning, want an international treaty that would legally bind countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Washington and others reject it, focusing instead on building on the modest decisions made at last December’s summit in Cancun, Mexico.
The Durban agenda calls for discussion on both viewpoints.
“I believe that we now have a solid basis to move forward collectively and that governments can deliver further good results this year, provided every effort is made to compromise,” the U.N.’s top climate change official Christiana Figueres said. She expressed regret that the road to Durban is proving a slow one.
Although the Bangkok conference was not geared to tackle the core issues, some movement was at least expected in implementing decisions reached at Cancun. These included the formation of a multibillion-dollar Green Climate Fund to aid developing nations obtain clean-energy technology, setting up a global structure for these nations to obtain patented technology for clean energy and climate adaptation and rounding out a plan to compensate poorer nations for protecting their climate-friendly forests.
Some deadlines for accomplishing these have already passed and it appears little of substance was accomplished in Bangkok, with that work being passed on to the next meeting set for June in Bonn, Germany.
Although also not a pledging session, there was no indication that nations were prepared, in U.N. parlance, to “raise their ambitions,” or reduce emissions of greenhouse gases above earlier pledges.
The current total pledges are deemed by the United Nations to fall way short of cuts required to keep temperatures rising more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.8 F) above preindustrial levels — an agreement reached in Cancun by 193 countries.
“We have regrettably spent the entire week negotiating the agenda,” said Dessima Williams from the Caribbean island of Grenada. “This is unacceptable, and especially so for small islands who are running out of time if we are to avoid damage from rising sea levels and other climate change impacts. We cannot go on negotiating forever.”
But that’s what seems in the cards.
Developing countries are keen to preserve the landmark 1997 Kyoto Protocol, the only international existing agreement on reducing emissions. It is expiring at the end of 2012 and some countries, including Russia and Japan, have signaled that they would not make further pledges under an extended protocol.
The European Union is undecided and the United States, which rejected Kyoto, favors each country setting its own targets for emissions but has not ruled out an international pact if all major economies, including China, now the world’s no. 1 emitter, are parties.
“We are not prepared to go forward with the binding obligation for ourselves which would not apply to the other major economies,” chief U.S. delegate Jonathan Pershing told a news conference.
Environmental activists at the conference mostly backed the developing world position, and, noting the unfolding nuclear plant disaster in Japan, urged a global move away from both fossil fuels and nuclear power toward clean, renewable energy sources.
“For five years, rich countries have been ducking and weaving over their commitment to legally binding targets. The Bangkok meeting has finally given us clarity on countries’ real intentions — most of them have been paying lip service to being serious about tackling climate change,” said Asad Reham of Friends of the Earth.
Pablo Solon, the Bolivian delegate, said that even reaching the 2-degree goal would prove “unsafe for millions of lives and livelihoods across the world.”
Citing figures from the U.N. and Stockholm Environment Institute, he said that to meet even that target, the world would need to cut emissions by 14 gigatons each year by 2020. At best, he said, countries currently have pledged to reduce emissions by 8.7 gigatons, at worst 6.6 gigatons with more of the pledges coming from the developing rather than industrialized world.
Under the 1992 U.N. treaty, the world’s nations promised to do their best to rein in carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases emitted by industry, transportation and agriculture.
Since then, scientists have warned that without dramatic reductions in emissions, the world will risk inundation of islands and coastal areas as polar ice caps melt. Other foreseen dangers include the melting of river-feeding glaciers, the extinction of plant and animals species and extreme, unpredictable weather conditions.

Posted on April 10, 2011 at 2:04amGlobal Warming is the biggest BS scam the world has ever seen, you can shut down everything producing carbon in the US and you will change absolutely nothing with the temperature. While most hippies are absolutely off their rockers when it comes to global warming, the science behind it isn’t very hard to understand. The difficulty is in predicting a highly non-linear system.

Here’s the atmospheric concentration of CO2:

Test to see 1) if the annual CO2 cycles is getting larger as the result of higher CO2 concentrations, and 2) if the increased plant growth is enough to keep CO2 levels constant.
I’ll await your report. If you don’t respond, then I‘ll just assume you’re admitting you’re wrong.

Since they are now going to be forcing us to use those new CFL lightbulbs–which contain MERCURY– we launch a new “Carbon Credits Program”
Every time we buy a CFL bulb, we get a voucher from the EPA to cover the cost. When the bulbs wear out, we ship them–at goverment expense–to Al Gore’s mansions, and put the mercury in his drinking water supply.
Or, they could just leave us the Hell alone, and quit forcing us to buy overpriced bulbs made by cronie union companies that supported Obama’s campaign. (General Electric, anyone?) and cut the operatiing budget of the EPA in half. And quit allowing these unholy alliances between government and lobbyists.

Report Post »During the Nazi reign, SS recruits were made to swear to the doctrine of universal ice.
This was the doctrine of “WEL”. It stated that the world was surrounded by an ice shell.
This idea was pushed forward by the discovery that radio waves were echoed when directed into space. The ionization layer was unknown then so the scientists thought the waves were bouncing back from a solid ice shell. Faulty science played a part in the Nazi culture just as faulty science plays a part in the Algore culture. The Algore cultists have a pledge very similar to the Nazi pledge.
You can find this material by researching Louis Pauwels and Jauque Bergiers books.

Harry won’t mind. He professes to be part of the green movement and Nevada needs the jobs and has plenty of BLM land.
Why not bank the minerals till those pesky McDonalds cups that last forever are gone? Don’t be silly; just smelt them down whenever we need to with extremely efficient extraction equipment. You do the math; don’t count out the methane production and the bank of minerals (even gold and platinum) in the equation. Oh, and the landfill is “reuse able” Now that’s banking on America and a stimulus you can believe in and SEE. If the Green movement is sincere they can almost start counting the penguins and polar bears it will save. If not, I know of a few scientists that that can provide them with whatever data they need.
I am not offended by their Green religion at all. I just don’t like to be forced to tithe. Could the Green movement possibly find another faith or maybe just legitimize theirs?

Cancun Climate Change Summit speaker Ian Roberts stated that there is a direct correlation between carbon emissions and expanding waistlines. Of course, he considers this more justification to reduce the consumption of fossil fuel. For once, the man is right, at least about the fact that the use of fossil fuel has a direct correlation to prosperity and productivity.
Seldom do the wannabe tyrants admit that their objective is to reduce prosperity and starve the population into submission. The man should be applauded for his honesty if not the validity of his argument.
At last the wannabe tyrants admit that control of the individual using hunger and poverty is the objective of the global warming initiatives.

Posted on April 10, 2011 at 2:25amGlobal warming is a hoax, started, as the article says, over 19 years ago. It started with a few liberal scientists who hated the thought that oil companies made so much money. They began to fabricate evidence that the world was becoming warmer due to emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere, while they searched for ways to profit off of solar panels and windmills. Those emails discovered by FOX show the data is all fabricated.
Now virtually every climate scientist in the world is claiming that that mankind is polluting the environment in a way that may have so called “devastating” consequences, while those same people are pumping money into “green” energy hoping to profit from the fear. And now, is it a coincidence that 97.53% of all green energy companies are funded by liberal climate scientists, including Al Gore? True fact.
It’s a hoax, a scam pure and simple. Something to take money out of your pocket, no less now than it was 19 years ago. Check my facts if you want, but a) the Earth is actually getting colder according to every legitimate measure, b) there is no credible evidence that all the CO2 pumped into atmosphere actually retains heat. The dispute among scientists whether CO2 actually retains heat on Earth at all is a matter hotly disputed, with the preponderance of evidence pointing to the conclusion that it is not, and c) CO2 is actually a helpful gas, one that promotes plant growth, something you learned in school, but a simple fact that climates scientist believe you have forgotten because they think you’re stupid.
In other words, people will believe anything.

You are right about the weather that follows these events and I have noted that for years. Satan is the prince of the power of the air. The Bible also tells us that he can rain down fire from the sky, so this tells us that Satan has power over the weather. He also has power over the weather loonies and laughs as he gets them together to make fools out of them.

Posted on April 10, 2011 at 11:40amWhy hasn’t anyone started a successful company dealing with solutions to “climate change”? If it is so important why are there no companies willing to take a risk? Shouldn’t it be a huge moneymaker as we speak? It‘s not a successful investment that’s why! I’d like to send Al Gore my heating bills from this past winter!

Posted on April 11, 2011 at 9:58amThe Yamal connection. One tree ring. Hide the decline. Photosynthesis in the dark/arctic winters. Climate-Gate releases show that Yamal is more frequently sited than ‘hockey stick’.
A new religion produced by inevitable human greed. Greed of power over another person – elite ruling class-Politician. One world government.
Driving force: “political correctness the like of which no doubt protected Adolf Eichmann from adverse comments” during his trail he blustered the claim “I just followed orders”.
The precursor – Western Spotted Owl ‘endangered’ in the 80′s, caused by man and his use of lumber. Fabrication via half truths. Politicians incorporated-sought out ‘believers’ in the science community. Private biologist in the area claimed that ‘no, there are several sick spotted owl communities and these need to be studied (private biologist do not have unlimited funding-they are hired to do a specific job) by the government’. The demise of the Western Spotted Owl (sub specie to the Spotted Owl) was then and today an apparently natural invasion of an aggressive-tough owl specie that cries out – I am coming to take your land , leave willingly or I will kill you. Eastern(east of the Rocky Mt.) Barred Owl is currently being hunted and killed by government hired shooters.
