LONDON (AP) — A U.K. judge has rejected an appeal and granted bail to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who will be freed from a British jail.
High Court justice Duncan Ouseley rejected prosecutors’ argument that Assange should stay in prison and granted him conditional bail.
Assange has been in prison since Dec. 7, following his surrender to British police over a Swedish sex-crimes warrant. He denies wrongdoing but is refusing to surrender to Sweden’s request to extradite him for questioning.
Assange was granted a conditional release on 200,000 pounds ($316,000) bail Tuesday, but prosecutors sought to keep him behind bars, arguing there was a risk he would flee.
Last month WikiLeaks deeply angered U.S. officials by beginning to publish its trove of 250,000 secret U.S. diplomatic cables.

Posted on December 16, 2010 at 8:38pmHe will be watched, as RBAGALA says, by many, many governments. His actions have affected many nations. I will be surprised if he is allowed to live much longer.

Posted on December 16, 2010 at 3:46pmMr. Assange maybe freed from prison but I firmly believe that from now on each and every action of his will be scrutinized by a dozen or more intelligence services across the world. He will be the most watched man at this time. No, he is not free. In fact he is far from it.
Report Post »By his selfish actions he has created his own cage and no act of his will go unscrutinized.

Posted on December 16, 2010 at 9:36amColleagues, Ron Paul, M.D., has voiced his support for the WikiLeaks enterprise. That ought give all TRUE Libertarians pause. Perhaps we ought not allow a mindless knee-jerk condemnation of Assange and his compardres before giving some honest reflection. Just think: Which politician has suffered the most from the disclosures? Our current president and his State Department.
Yes, indeed, the private who sourced the documents broke federal law in a most egregious way, enormously magnified by his status as active military. Assange has no legal or moral ties to the USA. His appeal is to a moral compass to which US law is irrelevant.
Now, Assange’s moral compass is open to and ought to be examined and debated. On a personal level, he does seem to be consumed with bitterness, possibly even blind hatred, with striking unresolved authority “issues.” But sometimes, even the morally misguided and the mentally ill can do right things, albeit for wrong reasons.
Net effect to me seems to be that the Great Savior’s “redemption” of America’s image abroad has by these disclosures been discovered to be possessed of clay feet, nay, shameless hypocrisy. No, the end does not justify the means in the best Jesuitical moral teachings, but ultimately, how bad is that?

Posted on December 16, 2010 at 9:46amWhat the hell are you all whining about?!? Who are you people? What is this guy’s crime? Posting something on the internet? Maybe ‘accomplice to X’? What are you going to charge him with as a foreign national? Where is your sense of justice, of balance? Recalibrate your stance on this, because if you love justice, than this is not the human travisty of free speech you are making it out to be. I figured our government trying to make up ex-post-facto laws to get him, and our DOJ head salivating over the thought of if, would get your guys attention more that some guy exposing how corrupt and incompitent this adminstration has been working with our allies. Geez, this is only the perfect pretext for the government to hear your ‘discontent’ and come ‘protect’ you from future incidents. Wake up already . . .

Posted on December 16, 2010 at 3:21pm@ardua76 that’s right, unless we can bring a legitimate espionage charge against him (and we should be looking into whether we can) he is a journalist and protected by the same laws we may need to protect us some day.
Report Post »we cant let the fact that he is a progressive anarchist and shows no concern for the lives of those hurt by his leaks affect our view on this…. until that harm and his guilt is proven in a court he is innocent and the first amendment must not be lost or discarded because we don’t like what he stands for..

Since Hillary is the one in government that is taking the most heat (with calls for her resignation), let’s look at who would be politically threatened by her. Posted on December 16, 2010 at 11:43amDidn’t he surrender to authorities? Wouldn’t anyone else being charged with sexual misconduct be given bail? You all act like the legal system can and should be manipulated to suit your needs. He wasn’t being arrested for the leaks nor should his association with Wikileaks carry on to the charges of sexual misconduct.
Oh yes, let’s start treating those accused of a crime any which way we like, at our own whim based on pre-conceived notions of guilt. That’s not a dangerous precedent to set at all!
