Apple Announces New Products at Developers Conference — Get the Details Here

Apple Announces Thin, High Res MacBook Pro and Other Software Updates at World Wide Developers Conference

SAN FRANCISCO (The Blaze/AP) — We‘ve been waiting to see what goodies Apple would announce at its World Wide Developer’s Conference in San Francisco on Monday. Among the announcements was a new MacBook Pro with a super-high resolution “Retina” display, setting a new standard for screen sharpness.

The new MacBook Pro will have a 15-inch screen and four times the resolution of previous models, Apple executive Phil Schiller told developers at a conference in San Francisco. It is also touted to be about as thin as the MacBook air when closed.

Schiller called it “the most beautiful computer we’ve ever made“ and an ”engineering breakthrough.”

Apple already uses “Retina” displays – with individual pixels too small to be distinguished by the naked eye – in its latest iPhones and iPads.

It will also cost $2199 and up, and is part of a general revamp of Apple’s personal computer line announced Monday.

Check out this footage from SlashGear of the new Macbook:

In addition to the MacBook, the conference also introduced new software for mobile devices, iOS 6, which will sport more than 200 new features. This includes enhancements to Siri, a virtual assistant that interprets voice commands and talks back to the user.

Since the feature was introduced in October with the iPhone 4S, Siri has been “studying up and learning a lot more,” says Scott Forstall, Apple’s senior vice president for iPhone software.

He demonstrated that by having Siri tell whether LeBron James or Kobe Bryant is the taller basketball player. Siri replies, “LeBron James appears to be slightly taller” as the cards of both players are displayed on the screen.

Apple says it is partnering with Yelp so that Siri can include ratings and prices of restaurants when you ask Siri for places to eat. The company is also partnering with OpenTable to make reservations.

Siri will now be available in more languages and more countries. It is also coming to the iPad for the first time.

The announcement of new software for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch has been confirmed by banners that appeared at the Moscone conference center in San Francisco on Friday, reading “iOS 6.” It’s not much of a surprise. Apple has used its Worldwide Developers Conference as an opportunity to announce new iPhone software for the past few years.

In the pipeline, is the Mac OS X 10.8 “Mountain Lion” operating system, which has built-in features to facilitate sharing on Twitter and Flickr. For instance, you’ll get notifications directly from Twitter when you get a direct message or a mention on Twitter.

There’s also a “Power Nap” feature that keeps your Mac up to date even while it’s in power-saving “sleep” mode. It will get your emails, back up your files and download software updates automatically.

Mountain Lion will be available next month and will cost $19.99 – $10 cheaper than what the current system, Lion, costs.

Those buying the new MacBook models will get the upgrade for free when it’s available.

Now the wait begins again for the rumored iPhone 5 release many believe will occur in October.

You know, I find something increasingly fascinating here on The Blaze, and it’s the hatred of American-designed, American ingenuity. Apple was founded by Steve Jobs in America, but so many of you speak it with so much contempt. Apple IS American ingenuity, so it Microsoft of course but what’s with this irrational hatred towards it? I mean, first of all, it‘s just a freakin’ computer – so why all the weird super angry ******** people?

But the arrogance and ignorance is really fascinating here, most of the people who go “DUR MAC IS DUM” have never touched a Mac but probably use iPhones themselves. I just don’t understand it at all. All that put aside though, there’s still the fact that Apple has nothing to do with politics at all and is a wonderfully designed, super successful company.

Also, who hear uses a computer, phone or tablet made 100% in America? Any of you? No? That’s what I thought, don’t attack apple for outsourcing parts, at least Apple products are designed in America, many PCs don’t even have that.

I don’t hate people who use Windows computers, in fact I own one, so what’s with all the weirdness?

You’ve mostly got it backwards, the lashing out that goes on against Apple is knee-jerk retaliation from PC owners from years of being lambasted as morons from the ego-centric mac/apple crowd that think themselves to be genius, artist, cut-above-the-rest types, typically more ‘academic’. Only until recently, w/ iOS and the onslaught of open source have Macs become something useful to more than the photo/art/video crowd. As a 20 year veteran of the IT industry, I’ve seen it time and time again. Personally, I don’t give a rats *** what technology you prefer or what platform you choose to run on. I have to live both these days to deal w/ mobile app development and still continue to work in corporate america where everything is web or native windows development. So it doesn’t matter to me. But I think you have the hatred level a bit backward based on my experience in the industry.

@Hard.Right is correct. For younger people it seems that owing any advance for of electronic makes to some kind of genius, this is the most prevalent in Apple owners. The truth of the matter MACs can’t even begin to stack up to what a PC can do. MACs are entertainment device made to be user friendly, which I guess is the reason for the feeling of superiority. While PCs are workhorses that can perform advance computing that can’t be matched by the a MAC, it‘s a shame people don’t know how to use them properly.

      Its a Ford/Chevy thing.
Also it goes way back. Steve Jobs was a marketing genius. But back in the 80′s he was a ruthless, cocky ass. Couldn’t handle his company, put the wrong guy in charge, lost almost all of their market share and got the boot. Back then Apple people were always on the defensive, trying to justify their crappy effete machines.
Now days Apple is a human rights disgrace. It epitomizes all the bad stereotypes of corporate America. Its users tend to be liberals that don’t see the irony in calling out conservatives for not wanting to support govt entitlement programs while carrying a phone and using a computer that was made in a factory that resembles something out of the bad old days of the industrial revolution.

PC’s may be workhorses, but for those of us who prefer our computers for media and fun, Mac’s are asthetically pleasing and efficient (not to mention easy to use and not bogged down with 5,000 trial run programs that come with it). I‘ve been using computers on a daily basis since I started high school and PC’s in no way compare to the Mac’s I have used. It may be the icon of the elites, but it’s a reliable and top notch product as well. Point and case for me: I had a Sony Vaio laptop for two years before the motherboard died. I’ve had a Powerbook G4 since 2005 that still works perfectly and has outlasted both my parents HP laptops bought after 2005. With Apple, you do not generally have to be a computer technician to keep your computer running well. It’s a matter of preference and need obviously, but Apple is has been much better for me and well worth the price.

      @ITSJUSTKIM
Apple may be aesthically pleasing, but everything they sell is way over-priced and Apple is too controlling on what you can do with what you can buy. Apple will NOT let you add memory like Android and other platform tablets and music players, do NOT provide any USB or any other kind of ports that other tablet manufacturers do. Apple is somewhat, or used to be at least, limited in what software they could buy. I have been comparing tablets for three years and one can get more for their money on anything BUT Apple. When the iPad 2 finally came down in price comparable to other tablets, I finally bought one. It works ok, but I am still disappointed that I cannot add memory like I can on a non-Apple tablet, nor am able to plug a Jump drive into it, nor am I able to plug in a mini-HDMI cable into it. I would have to spend MORE money to be able to watch a video on tv. That’s the Apple way, spend more money to do what other tablets will already do. I have PC laptops that have outlasted Apple MacBooks. It works both way, but it’s really frustrating to have to spend, spend, spend with Apple products.

Apple is an elitist brand. A bourgeois liberal’s elitist brand. People that frequent Starbucks sipping on their latte and surfing the net on their MacBook. If you want a computer program, you have to see if you can even find it for Apple. Apple is innovative in many regards such as their iPhone and iPad. I remember in school using Apple computers in the mid 1980s. I never understood why we would learn on a computer brand that you would never use once you graduated from school. I like Android myself for phones and Windows for home computers, even though I’m not a Microsoft fan either. It’s just that 90% of the computers our there are Microsoft based, so they are the standard. I do think Apple needs to be around just for competition interests, but I’d never buy one as they are overpriced.

Are you saying that Apple products aren’t overpriced, SilentDove???????????
If it weren’t for the price, I would have a few Apple laptops (which I can well afford because I’m one of the 1% crowd), but I respect the money that I have and don’t see the need to IMPRESS ANYONE and buy something that is overpriced, when 100% of the other laptops out there will provide me with 100% of my computing needs. Just like I really don’t need to hold a conversation with my phone that was PROGRAMMED by a liberal, so just how much REAL knowledge does it have?????? Monkey see, Monkey do — Garbage in, Garbage out.

“The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of uninformed and misinformed fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president.”

Apple is not overpriced, it is right priced. That is what the market bears. Any sane economist and free market capitalist would understand that. Yes some people buy it for the cool factor. Most of us buy it because it WORKS!. How many times have you had to reboot your android phone? How many times for your Windows PC? How many crashes, bugs, and errors have you dealt with? It can be done better, but it takes time and effort. Most companies that offer hardware and software for the PC rush things to market, do sloppy testing, and put out crap. Apple is one of the few companies that are concerned with form and function. Their products’ industrial design sets the standard, and their software WORKS. So for all those crying that some guy at Starbucks is a liberal elitist because he has a MacBook Air, just go cry in the mirror cause you were too cheap to buy a well designed product and took a chance on an inferior one. Its like shopping at Nordstroms vs. Wal-Mart. Buying at nordstroms may cost you more, but you get what works, and it lasts.

I refuse to purchase any Apple product. They are restrictive devices that are inferior in both computing power and software selection. I have work with computers for 30 years and I can say that Apple is by not a superior product, they may look good, but that is where the “superior” aspect of Apple ends. The whole reason I won’t buy another Apple product is my experience with the crappy ipod classic. I will admit extreme naivete’ in the area of mp3 players, however, I paid $240 for an ipod and my son’s $25 no name mp3 player has an AM/FM receiver and my “superior” ipod does not. Now I just use it as an expensive 80gb thumb drive. I cannot imagine not including this functionality in the ipod, the walkman I bought in the 80‘s had a frickin’ AM/FM receiver… I also do not like Job’s idea of free market, his illogical hatred of google when he did the the same in the 80′s. Apple products are all flash and no go.

Please explain how macs are superior? The processing power is same and sometimes weaker, the resolution only slightly better, macs will soon be locked in to the itunes and app store eliminating any software choice Apple doesn’t like. So explain superior? I haven’t have my PC crash in, well since I bought the thing. I am a “power user” by the way, I use several different operating systems and familiar with just about all of them UNIX, Linux, windows and OSX and a smattering of others. My experience with Apple has been well, lacking. Heck Apple isn’t even in the super-computing game, check the heavy-weight, no Apples to be found. That blows the entire Apple “superiority” thing right out the window.

You would be totally wrong in your assessment, 750 Gigs is just working space for video, and yeah I have been working on PC’s since before Apple existed so I know all to well about backing up, which is totally not my point as its was built to claim a title of thinnest laptop ever, but at what cost in functionality again woefully undersized but very fast drive drive, I am sure it will burn up bench marks, I don’t run those, I deal with really large data files every day on my 17 MBP, which can be easily upgraded as drives get larger, and while yes I can use a 2 TB drive it’s then working thru a slow interface USB 2.0 or FW 800, and its not that I don’t like apple products, I have lot’s, it’d just not a compelling update, given how over priced the retina unit is, and with the dropping of the 17 inch model, well I may have to start looking else where.

Windows runs just as fast on a quality PC as it does on a Mac because a Mac is essentially just a quality PC.

People worshipping technology rather than God. It’s beyond stupid. These people need to get outside and go for a walk.

Says the man on the internet.

Define worship? To desire the newest and best isn’t a crime against God. If it is then you too are guilty of it because I am willing to bet millions that you aren’t browsing on a computer from earlier than the 90s. What was wrong with your Apple II?

GOODSTUFF, I hear ya but I wouldn’t call it worshipping technology. No different than keeping your car up-to-date. It’s kind of fun to watch technology evolve.

Funny how when technology does the same things God supposedly has done in various religions it gets no credit and is seen as completely unexceptional and unsurprising, yet when its claimed that “God” did it (or agents on God’s behalf) it’s suddenly a “miracle.”

At least “AppleZombies” know that it’s “couldn’t care less“ and not the incorrect ”could care less”. If you could care less, that indicates that you, could care less than what you’re caring now for something.
Couldn‘t care less means that it’s at the bottom of what you care about.

      AppleZombies know this.

      @hochnessmonster, @Ed_Kel,

I could care less what Apple does. Sometimes they do some cool things, other times not so much, but they haven‘t done anything that some other company hasn’t already done, they just did it better and with more style, in some people’s opinion.

As for your opinions on what SyttendeMai17 said, I couldn’t care less.

They got to be a “big deal” by selling inferior products wrapped in hype to gullible hipsters and restricting peoples choices. You can buy the exact same processing power, even better for significant savings and have plenty of software/ hardware choices in stead of buying all the hype that goes with Apple. But it’s not as cool sitting in Starbucks with a PC or a regular phone. I guess I buy my stuff for real work, not watching netroots at an OWS event…

Does Apple realize that there is still a market for professionals? You know, the market that made them cool and popular to begin with? Everything they announced today was entirely useless for the people who NEED their products. I could rant for hours about the particulars but what it boils down to is this; if you want to masturbate, text message or play games on the toilet; they’ve got you covered. If you need a professional product for graphics, editing, effects work, design etc – the computer you bought while Steve Jobs was still healthy is as good as it gets.

From someone in the field of graphic design, I disagree. In fact, I’m still trying to understand why in the world you would think spec bumps are “useless” if you are truly in an affected field.. If you even remotely knew what you were talking about, you would know that faster, “graphically more clear” machines are always welcomed in graphic design and industries alike.

Overpriced useless hardware. what is the point of a “super-high“ resolution on a 15” display? Apple is for snobs who like to bring up the fact that they own a $2000 laptop

You’re right, Apple is for snobs. Must be a world full of snobs if the company is worth more than all of their competitors combined.

Doesn’t say much about you hating on a company without any logical reasoning other than jealousy.

I don’t know anybody that brags about the cost of their Apple laptop. They do usually talk about how great it is and how easy it is to use. They’ll tell you how much it cost when asked, but when they see your look of shock, they’ll add “It‘s totally worth it to have a machine that ’just works’.

Of course, us Windows guys that don‘t run every lame toolbar or piece of software under the sun also have a machine that ’just works’. The difference is that a Mac protects you a lot better than Windows did until Windows 7 came out. As long as you don’t turn off UAC (and pay half attention to what you’re running) you’re ok. The problem is that every “tech” recommends turning UAC off which renders all the safety mechanisms in Windows 7 useless. Yes, some things are a pain in the butt with UAC turned on, but I’d rather deal with some of those problems than have a machine that gets infected at the drop of a hat.

This is a “developers” conference, focusing on “software”. We were lucky to see new hardware but more importantly, iOS 6 and Mountain Lion are bringing some pretty big game changers to the ecosystem. You couldn’t be more wrong when saying that this was a let down.
