Apple Co-Founder Steve Jobs Dies at 56

Apple Co Founder Steve Jobs Dies at 56

Steve Jobs — the visionary and entrepreneur who co-founded Apple — one of the world’s most influential and impactful companies — has died at the age of 56 after a seven-year battle with a rare form of pancreatic cancer. In 2009 Jobs also underwent a liver transplant. He only took three leaves of absence since 2004, when his cancer was first announced, and stepped down as CEO in August, 2011.

Jobs’ family released the following statement:

Steve died peacefully today surrounded by his family.

In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family. We are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve’s illness; a website will be provided for those who wish to offer tributes and memories.

We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve. We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief.

And incoming Apple CEO Tim Cook sent the following email to all Apple employees upon learning of Jobs’ death:

Team,

I have some very sad news to share with all of you. Steve passed away earlier today.

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

We are planning a celebration of Steve’s extraordinary life for Apple employees that will take place soon. If you would like to share your thoughts, memories and condolences in the interim, you can simply email rememberingsteve@apple.com.

No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve’s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much.

Tim

The Apple website provides the same contact email address as the one featured in Cook’s letter, for others outside the Apple community wishing to share their thoughts or condolences.

“It boggles the mind to think of all the things that Steve Jobs did,” said Silicon Valley venture capitalist Roger McNamee, who worked with Jobs.

According to an article in NPR, McNamee said that in addition to introducing the world to desktop publishing and computer animated movies, Jobs should be credited with creating the first commercially successful computer:

“Any one of those would have qualified him as one of the great executives in American history,” McNamee says, “the sum of which put him in a place where no one else has ever been before. To me he is of his era what Thomas Edison was to the beginning of the 20th century.”

Jobs was only 21-years old when he co-founded Apple Computer in his garage in Cupertino, California. He was forced out of the company a decade later but returned in 1997 to rescue Apple from the bring of financial ruin. During his second run, Apple grew into the most valuable technology company in the world with a market value of $351 billion. Fox News reports that only Exxon Mobil is worth more.

Fox provides a report touching on some milestones in Jobs’ life:

I didn’t care for his products, his company, or the way he ran his business, but the man was an American citizen. I don’t know of any situations where he advocated against the country, and he provided a thriving business that created thousands of jobs.

I hope someone competent steps in to fill his shoes.

Your Bible quote is accurate and great. However, you should not state that you SOMEHOW don’t think he was a Christian. Unless you knew the man and what his beliefs were you DO NOT KNOW whether he had accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Please don‘t judge someone you don’t know, unless you have intimate knowledge or know that he did dispicable things which would show that there was absolutely no relationship and he bore no fruits of a Christian. This man had a great mind and did wonderful things for the computer world which in turn got each one of us right here on the internet. I hope and pray that he DID have a personal relationship with our Lord and went into eternity smiling with a song of praise on his lips. My best wishes and condolences for all who knew him. God bless all. “Every knee will bow and every tongue confess”

      TT,

You need to be “trained” on this comment and its sentiments.

      Let me try.

Of course we all die. Death is the ONLY thing life promises.

I have no doubt that you are a good and honest man. But when you inject your religion into these remberances and appreciations you are acting like a bully.

A bully because you claim to know something that is unknowable.

You have every right to think you know what happens when we die but that doesn’t make your thoughts on the matter true or right.

Without getting into the “value of belief” pertaining to death transcendence and how it relate to human understanding, I just want to nicely tell you that you are wrong.

and you should think more than you believe.

      cheers

Wow, such a strong reaction! In fact, I did know that Jobs embraced a Buddhist lifestyle. But you are correct that I do not know what his beliefs were at the time of his death. That is why I said I “somehow” doubted he made his peace with the Lord.

But HOW is that JUDGING him? I do not judge! I commented on what I thought. If he knew the Lord then he is with the Lord. If he did not…That is fact. I seriously doubt he was ever born again. That is my opinion.

Sorry if that offends you. It is a harsh lesson.

Is it the Bible verse you do not like? But you do not believe in a soul, so how is that bullying?

I actually am certain on my beliefs, but of course you cannot understand that. Look at it this way, Jobs is either worm food, he is burning in hell, or he is in heaven. Those are the options. In the first two cases he lost his soul. So how am I wrong?

It is NOT your place to judge what becomes of the soul of Steve Jobs, that is for GOD. YOU ARE NOT GOD. We are supposed to judge whether or not people are good or bad, whether we help, befriend or run from them based on these assessments. You’re an embarrassment to Christians in my opinion. Whether or not you go to heaven or hell when your day comes is not up to me, but God. But I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be friends with someone like you.

A truly great man. Steve Jobs was an example of how if you worked hard on a dream great things will happen.

So few people live up to their God given potential. Steve Jobs absolutely did. What an American success story! I hope his family finds comfort in their faith, and in the knowledge that Steve will never be forgotten. God bless them all.

I was thinking something similar…I was going to say that I bet all the bloodthirsty blazers were happy that a huge democratic campaign donor was dead.

Once he resigned it was only a matter of time (that was the reason he left). Sad to see one of the great minds of our time depart. Rest in peace.

Actually, for Jobs it started in India where he shaved his head, became a Buddhist and did a bunch of LSD. He truly was a great man.

This a sad loss for capitalist, geeks, and all around people who loved products by Apple. Steve Jobs is an inspiration because of how his company helped brought computers to a new generation of people and help bring capitalism into a positive light.

He truly was an amazing capitalist. Did you know that when he reassumed his CEO position for Apple in the 90‘s he discontinued all of Apple’s philanthropic programs? Truly a good business decision.
We should also not forget that this prototypical capitalist was also a huge liberal; living in the same NYC apartment building as Steven Speilberg and Bono, he was a Clinton guest in the Lincoln Bedroom, and he married Joan Baez. A brilliant capitalist selfish liberal egomaniac buddhist. Just sayin’.

      RIP indeed.
I feel like I’m a closet IMAC user since I am MS IT person. I bought an IMAC about 5 years ago and at first I had a hard time adopting to its methodology. Now, I’m hooked. MS is my bread and butter job wise, but I love his products. IMAC…WOW!!! IPhone… WOW!!!! Razor was the blazer until the IPhone changed the game. Steve’s vision may never be realized to its full potential. The firing of Steve and the slump the company went through proved that. Android is just a Myna bird.
I would like to add as a Christian, may you RIP and your family find comfort in their time of sorrow.

Jobs attended Cupertino Junior High and Homestead High School in Cupertino, California. He frequented after-school lectures at the Hewlett-Packard Company in Palo Alto, California, and was later hired there, working with Steve Wozniak as a summer employee.[35] Following high school graduation in 1972, Jobs enrolled at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Although he dropped out after only one semester,[36] he continued auditing classes at Reed, while sleeping on the floor in friends’ rooms, returning Coke bottles for food money, and getting weekly free meals at the local Hare Krishna temple.[15] Jobs later said, “If I had never dropped in on that single calligraphy course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.”[15]

In the fall of 1974, Jobs returned to California and began attending meetings of the Homebrew Computer Club with Wozniak. He took a job as a technician at Atari, a manufacturer of popular video games, with the primary intent of saving money for a spiritual retreat to India.

Jobs then traveled to India to visit the Neem Karoli Baba[37] at his Kainchi Ashram with a Reed College friend (and, later, the first Apple employee), Daniel Kottke, in search of spiritual enlightenment. He came back a Buddhist with his head shaved and wearing traditional Indian clothing.[38][39] During this time, Jobs experimented with psychedelics, calling his LSD experiences “one of the two or three most important things [he had] don
