Arab Emirates: Women on Facebook Blackmailed for Money, Sexual Favors for Breaking Sharia Law

Social media’s dark side strikes again — proving that when in the wrong hands it can be used as a tool of destruction. This time, ANSAMed reports that female Facebook members in the United Arab Emirates are allegedly being blackmailed for money and coerced into giving sexual favors after posting “dishonorable” pictures of themselves online. Often, the “immodest” photos in question are of the women clad in a bathing suit, or off-the-shoulder dress.  By Western standards such outfits wouldn’t even raise an eyebrow, however in the Arab world — even in the more “modern” UAE — it could cost a woman her life.

Some might wonder why, given their geographic location, the women would even consider posting such “incriminating” photos at all. Perhaps they just wish to be like countless other people their age all over the world who innocently use Facebook for “fun.” The problem is, once blackmailed or raped the women reportedly cannot even report the crime to the authorities as they would in effect be turning themselves in for breaking sharia law.

The blackmailers are looking for money, forced sexual relations or emotional and psychological control, according to operators from the dedicated department set up by the Ministry of the Interior to tackle this growing phenomenon which has women in the Emirates stuck between a rock and a hard place. If they turn to the police to report cases of abuse they could be arrested. In cases where there were consensual sexual relations, despite being forced through blackmail, the victim can be arrested and locked up for having consented to a sexual act outside of marriage. This is an illegal and punishable act in the UAE.

The ministry‘s social department is victims’ only safe harbour at the moment. “We offer victims total privacy”, states a staff member at the office, who requested that he remain anonymous, “but acting as a police department we carry out inquiries and when necessary, such as in cases where there are other victims forced to perform criminal acts, we cannot merely protect, we must also report.”

With one foot in a land of archaic tribalism and the other trying to straddle modern civilization, women in the The Emirates face a dilemma: curb their desire to live like they would in a completely free society, or succumb to it and face the dire consequences.

    In the Palestinian territories, young women are sometimes accused of losing their virginity. After that, they only way they can recover their honor is by being a martyr. They are then pressured to commit homicide bombings as the only way they can go to paradise. Some women who were treated as pariahs were then treated as heroes after they killed themselves by blowing themselves up to kill Jews. Brigitte Gabriel tells about this in her book “Because They Hate”, with specific names and examples. What a warped civilization!

      Still, they are working on it and planning to make it happen.

      I choose not to go to Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq etc. because I would have to face their laws. They have their own rules to obey. If I did not like it there I would find a country who’s laws were better and move. When they move leave Sharia behind and obey the laws of the land they move to. I choose to live in America and as a citizen I vote and have something to say when they try to bring their laws here.

      I think the women should stand up to the men and take over the government. I think that is what they are afraid of. That is what their faith is all about in creating fear. Fear among the women and fear in outsiders. Only because they know if the women got together and took their freedoms their laws would be toast. They need their women more than the women need them; but, the women just don’t know it yet.

    What does not break Sharia law?? I think Sharia law is like game night house rules, what ever I say are the rules are the rules at my house. Sharia law sounds like ad-hoc on-the-fly made up rules based on who ever can BS the best.

      @TEIN — there is a fine little book called Shariah for Non-Muslims put out by the Center for the Study of Political Islam.

      It’s less than 50 pages that will make you rethink the tolerance of Western Civ in favor of a little less tolerance when it comes to the political aspects of Islam. It’s very much a “must read” piece if you want to sort out how we are becoming islamized.

      Maybe these women are not internet savvy enough to know their neighbors could see this, that they thought it would just be those outside their own country. Or maybe they believed “honorable” men would not do such a thing to them.Look at all the teens who ARE internet savvy, who sexted, and now their pics are all over the internet. They expressed freedoms, that as Americans we take for granted. As it is now, dogs probably have more rights than women and children in their country. Men are the law, thye do what they wil to women and children. Look up the term “thighing” , when you figure out what it is…learn that men are allowed to do it according to shariah law…..what a nice and decent law that is!

      Not everyone can or has the ability to move from their country. Can you do so easily? Women in the UAE and other Muslim nations are stymied by their gender and the limitations on what they are able to do and not do in their culture. By consenting to sexual predators, they most often save themselves from brutal torture, beheadings, stoning and persecution. It’s easy to put these women down or mock them, but a brief study of what they have to endure from birth would elicit a little compassion and less mocking.

      Thanks for the links. The second video is perhaps the one that is more disturbing, since it shows the efforts of spreading the Gospel have been hampered by the police. God help us all if this spreads to others states!
