Fuzzy Position? Arab League Criticizes Allied Airstrikes on Libya

CAIRO (AP) — The head of the Arab League has criticized international strikes on Libya, saying they caused civilian deaths.
The Arab League’s support for a no-fly zone last week helped overcome reluctance in the West for action in Libya. The U.N. authorized not only a no-fly zone but also “all necessary measures” to protect civilians.
Amr Moussa says the military operations have gone beyond what the Arab League backed.
Moussa has told reporters Sunday that “what happened differs from the no-fly zone objectives.“ He says ”what we want is civilians’ protection not shelling more civilians.”
U.S. and European strikes overnight targeted mainly air defenses, the U.S. military said. Libya says 48 people were killed, including civilians.

Posted on March 20, 2011 at 11:50pmOkay all ye countries who look for others to save them and fight their wars – it’s time to poop or get off the potty.
It’s horrible but non-combatant people do die in wars and police actions. Goofy leaders even have women and children stand around them as shields while they are shooting at the good guys.
Report Post »They hide behind women’s skirts, inside hospitals and places of worship. So, unless you holier than thou folks want to get off your backsides and do hand to hand combat to separate the good folks from the bad – deal with it. Yes, it’s terrible. Your solution is what?

Posted on March 20, 2011 at 10:08pmWhy are we bombing Libya? Because the Arab League wants us to? Those Arab countries have planes, bombs and soldiers. Let them clean up their own neighborhood for a change! They will be blaming us for slaughtering innocent Arabs in no time. How many of those so called rebels cheered the return of the Lockerbie bomber? How many of them hate the west? How many of them believe in sharia law and beheadings? I don’t trust any of those middle eastern puke countries. They’re filled with savages and knuckle draggers . Do any of you reading this trust that our current administration could distinguish between a good Arab group and a bad one? Our current govt is a cluster**** from top to bottom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted on March 20, 2011 at 9:22pmI agree that he Arab League should shut the hell up – but explain to me why we (coalition) are bombing Ghadaffi’s strong hold and hitting tanks? The UN and whole statement by all the parties is “no-fly zone” – not bombing runs. I understand taking out anit-aircraft guns and radar sites – but seems the effort is going beyond the boundaries the UN and Coalition set. Why? How decided? Said from the beginning this was a no-win for the US – and I‘m betting that it’s going to be a major mistake!

I am going to say this again HIPPO. I know you have no sense of History. Here’s the deal.
When we were engaged in WWII…,during the desert campaign. The Arabs took no side. They waited until the battle was over and stripped the corpses of BOTH sides of their valuables.

Posted on March 20, 2011 at 6:13pmI’m not sure I understand what is wrong with the Arab League issuing a statement condemning the unintentional deaths of innocent citizens. It’s never a good thing when people are murdered. Would you prefer the Arab League to say something like, “we are so happy that people were killed in an effort to keep the peace! Keep up the good work!”
It’s okay to mourn the lives of those lost, and support the overall objective at the same time. Why do we have to get all over sensitive because authorities expressed dissatisfaction with our performance? Maybe we could unionize so job performance won’t have to be an issue.

Posted on March 20, 2011 at 7:31pmWhat’s wrong is that they have unrealistic expectations. What do they expect us to do, fly into an unsafe situation and just take what comes or mitigate the danger first so that the UN approved forces are safe. It is never clean and easy and they are trying to save face at home to cover their own asses. No one wants civilian casualties. If you back the no fly zone back it, don’t waffle like a typical politician.

Obama consults with congressional leaders on Libya
By Felicia Sonmez
Updated, 2:15 p.m.
President Obama held a closed-door consultation with congressional leaders on the crisis in Libya on Friday afternoon
Section 8- Powers of Congress
To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water;
Jzs. Copy and paste the part of the Constitution that says “The President shall have closed-door meetings with Congressional leadership before ordering an act of war”
Report Post »Please.
You freekin’ moron.

Posted on March 20, 2011 at 8:39pmJZS, in case you didn’t know, consulting with the leaders of Congress is not the same as consulting with Congress. You see, the leaders of Congress don’t have the authority to declare war. Only Congress does….as a whole. Except under incidents of national security, in which case, the President can do what he needs to do to defend this country (something Obama has NEVER considered doing in ANY matter). In which case, the President has sixty days to do what he needs to do before he would then be required to obtain Congress’ declaration of war.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) attended in person; Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who is currently leading a bipartisan congressional delegation to Italy, were among those attending by phone. ”
I’m really getting sick of John Boehner, and I’ve been questioning Mitch McConnell. The establishment Republicans are all too happy to meet with high level Democratic Progressives, and they don‘t tell us what’s going on. We need Tea Party people in key House and Senate positions.
2012 shouldn’t just be about the President.
